History writers may be paid a fixed fee, an advance against royalties, royalties on sales, or a combination. There is no history-specific standard rate established by the sources cited here. For a book, the headline payment is only part of the deal: rights, royalty calculations, reporting dates, deductions, and author-paid costs can all change what a writer ultimately receives.
Common ways history writers are paid
Fees for commissioned work
A commissioned article, educational resource, or other defined assignment may be paid for a fixed fee. Put the deliverable, deadline, fee, revision scope, and any extra duties in writing. The Society of Authors advises that, for educational writers paid on a fee basis, promotional work should be paid separately; it also cautions against broad restrictions on competing work. Advances and royalties for books
A book deal may include an advance against future royalties. An advance is generally accounted for against royalties under the contract; do not assume it is an extra payment on top of royalties. The agreement should explain how and when it is paid, how royalties are calculated, and when sales have generated enough credited royalties to offset it.

Royalties may differ by format and use. The Authors Guild’s model contract, for example, proposes 25% of publisher net receipts for electronic editions and electronically delivered audiobooks. Its physical-audio example is 10% of publisher net receipts on the first 10,000 copies and 12% on additional copies. These are model terms for negotiation, not evidence that all publishers—or history books in particular—pay those rates. Authors Guild model book contract

Payments routed through an agent
A contract may direct advances and royalties to an agent, who deducts commission and remits the balance. If this applies, clarify which works and rights the agency represents, what accounting it will provide, and how soon it must pass payments along. Authors Guild guidance on agency clauses
Is there a standard rate for history writers?
The cited sources do not establish a current, history-specific rate survey or a universal per-word rate. The Society of Authors reports that, in its experience, translator fees negotiated with publishers start in the region of £100 per thousand words, updated March 2022. For a particular offer, assess the fee or advance against the assignment’s research burden, length and deliverables, revision expectations, deadline, exclusivity, and additional work. Those factors help explain what an offer covers, but they do not create a market-rate statistic.
How rights and contract language affect earnings
Define what rights the publisher receives
Identify the specific work and the rights being licensed or assigned. Check the formats, languages, territories, term, and exclusivity, as well as subsidiary rights such as adaptation, translation, or serialization. Ask whether rights are licensed for a defined period or transferred, and what conditions allow them to return. The Society of Authors notes that educational publishers’ approaches to copyright can differ: some let authors retain copyright in text while others seek total copyright. Compare royalty bases, formats, and deductions
A percentage alone does not tell you how much a royalty may pay. The contract may calculate it on list price or on publisher net receipts, and those bases can produce different payments. Check each format’s rate and the definitions of receipts, discounts, returns, reserves, taxes, and third-party licensing income. Ask how income from licensed uses is accounted for and what share reaches the author. The Authors Guild’s model contract illustrates that royalty terms can vary by format; its example rates should be read as proposed contract language, not as a market-wide norm. Require clear statements and payment timing
Make sure the contract sets out how often statements arrive, what information they contain, and when payment follows. The Authors Guild model clause proposes semiannual statements and payment within three months after each accounting period closes. That is a model proposal, not a default requirement: check the signed agreement. The Guild’s commentary also recommends prompt written notice when money is late. Authors Guild model book contract

Account for permissions, indexes, and other extra duties
History books can involve images, quotations, and documentary extracts. Some publisher forms place permissions work and costs on the author; nonfiction contracts may also require the author to provide or fund an index. Confirm who obtains permissions, who pays, whether there is a cap, and whether charges are deducted from an advance or royalty account. Requirements depend on the specific material and applicable rules, so do not assume every image or quotation requires paid permission.

How to compare two offers
Compare the terms that determine both the amount and what the writer must do to earn it. The Authors Guild notes that publishing terms shape an author’s retained control as well as compensation. Authors Guild guide to author contracts
- Guaranteed payment: fee or advance amount, installment dates, and any conditions attached to payment.
- Royalties: base, rate by format, escalation terms, deductions, and treatment of licensed uses.
- Rights: formats, territories, languages, term, exclusivity, subsidiary rights, and reversion conditions.
- Accounting: statement frequency and detail, payment lag, and procedures for raising late or disputed amounts.
- Costs and extra work: permissions, indexing, promotion, revisions, and other out-of-pocket or uncompensated obligations.
- Representation: agent commission, which rights and work are covered, and remittance timing if payments pass through an agent.
A larger royalty percentage may still produce less than a smaller one if it is calculated on a different base or affected by different deductions. Compare the whole payment mechanism and rights grant, not just the percentage.
