Foldable phones work by combining a flexible, layered display with a hinge that controls how the handset opens, closes and, on some models, stays partly open. The screen is not a single piece of ordinary glass: it is an assembly of an emissive panel, thin glass or plastic layers and protective surfaces. The hinge supports that assembly, keeps the two halves aligned and can leave a controlled gap when the phone is shut.
Construction varies by manufacturer and model. Samsung’s documented stack, Google’s original Pixel Fold explanation and Samsung’s later Galaxy guidance illustrate the main principles, but none should be treated as a universal specification for every foldable phone.
What a foldable display is made of
An inner foldable screen is a stack of materials with different jobs. The display must produce light, transmit touch input, tolerate repeated flexing and survive everyday contact without the rigid glass surface used on a conventional phone.

Samsung’s documented four-part stack
In support guidance updated August 9, 2022, Samsung identifies four parts in its foldable display construction:
#1 Best Overall
- BIGGER, YET SLIMMER THAN EVER: Who would’ve guessed that wider could also be lighter? The design of Galaxy Z Fold7 is refined to feel like a traditional smartphone with its expanded cover display.
- BEST CAMERA ON A FOLD YET: You asked for more – now you can have the most. Galaxy Z Fold7 now boasts an ultra-premium 200MP camera with Pro-Visual Engine so you can effortlessly take incredibly detailed pics.
- SCREENSHARE FOR STREAMLINED ASSISTANCE: Intrigued by something you see? Go Live with Google Gemini, then screenshare or point your camera at it for additional info or assistance on the fly.¹
- DO AND VIEW MORE, ALL AT ONCE: With an 8” screen that allows you to view up to three windows at once, Galaxy Z Fold7 is the ultimate device for seeing and doing more.²
- ALL THE POWER AND SPEED YOU NEED Smoothly run your day with the power and speed of Galaxy Z Fold7. With its customized Snapdragon 8 Elite processor for Galaxy, you can stream your favorite shows, edit photos, scroll social feeds and more with ease.³
- AMOLED: the self-emissive display panel that produces the image without a separate backlight.
- Ultra Thin Glass (UTG): a very thin glass surface over the panel. It provides a glass-like face while remaining flexible enough for the phone’s folding motion.
- Protective layer: a layer intended to help resist outside forces and relieve some impact.
- Outer protective film: the upper surface that supports the display and can be replaced through the manufacturer’s service process.
This is Samsung’s description of its own design and should not be presented as the layer order used by every brand or generation. A different phone may use different films, adhesives, glass thicknesses or supporting structures.
Why plastics and thin glass are combined
Google’s explainer for the original Pixel Fold describes a foldable panel as a layered assembly using materials such as ultra-thin glass and plastics. Those materials are selected so the panel can flex repeatedly as the two halves move. The explanation does not publish a complete engineering specification for how strain is distributed through the panel, so it is not accurate to assign one universal layer arrangement or a single “neutral axis” to all foldables.
The practical result is a surface that feels more delicate than conventional phone glass. The inner panel can bend, but it is still vulnerable to a concentrated force from a fingernail, pen tip, key or grit trapped between the halves.
Why a crease can be visible
The bend line is a normal consequence of repeatedly folding a flexible layered assembly. Depending on the lighting and viewing angle, fine bends may be visible. A crease can look stronger when the screen is off, viewed obliquely or illuminated from the side; visibility alone does not prove that the hinge or panel has failed.
Samsung’s July 14, 2026 announcement describes a next-generation “Flex Titanium” display structure intended to reduce crease visibility. Samsung says the structure integrates a titanium-alloy film and a titanium plate to balance slimness, flexibility and strength. Those are company claims about that next-generation structure, not evidence that creases disappear or that other foldables use titanium in the same way.
How the hinge controls the fold
The hinge is a motion guide, not just a pivot
The hinge joins the phone’s two rigid halves and guides their relative movement. As you open the handset, it controls the path that the flexible display follows; as you close it, it brings the halves together without asking the screen to bend in an uncontrolled direction. Alignment matters because sideways movement or uneven pressure can damage the display stack even when the phone appears to close normally.
Samsung calls its hinge a bespoke spine. On the designs covered by its support material, the closed phone retains a small gap so the two inner glass surfaces do not press directly against each other. The hinge can also hold the phone at partially open angles.

A hinge that remains stable between fully open and fully closed positions allows hands-free use. Samsung describes its FlexHinge as enabling partially folded activities such as hands-free photos. The same general idea lets a phone act like a small stand for video calls or viewing content, although the useful angles and resistance depend on the model.

Google also describes a special hinge paired with the Pixel Fold’s flexible display. That confirms the functional relationship between hinge and panel, but Pixel’s exact internal mechanism should not be inferred from Samsung’s design.
Why internal hinge details differ
Manufacturers may use different linkages, friction elements, covers and debris-management measures. The cited manufacturer material does not establish one universal arrangement of gears, cams, brushes or other parts, and complete engineering drawings are not generally published. Treat detailed hinge descriptions as model-specific unless the phone maker documents them.
What durability numbers really mean
| Specification | Model and source scope | What it tells you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 200,000 folds | Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7; Samsung UK guide accessed October 13, 2026 | Samsung’s stated certification target for those models | A guaranteed lifespan for every foldable, or an independently verified cross-brand comparison |
| IP48 | Galaxy Z Fold7 and Z Flip7; Samsung’s stated laboratory conditions | Protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and freshwater submersion up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes | Protection from fine dust or sand, impact damage, or permanent water resistance after wear |
Interpreting the fold-cycle figure
“Up to 200,000 folds” is a Samsung model-specific certification claim. It describes a test target, not a promise that every individual phone will reach that number in every environment. Real use adds variables such as temperature, debris, drops, torsion, force applied while closing and how often the phone is opened. No independent comparative fold-cycle statistic covering multiple brands is established by the cited material.
Interpreting IP48 correctly
Samsung’s explanation of IP48 specifies protection against solid objects larger than 1 mm and freshwater immersion up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes under laboratory conditions. Samsung also warns that water resistance can diminish with wear and that these phones are not dust- or sand-resistant. The rating therefore should not be read as permission to use a phone on a beach, in fine powder or after a hard impact that may have compromised seals.
How the display and hinge share the workload
The panel and hinge solve different problems. Flexible layers allow the display to bend; the hinge determines where and how that bending occurs. When the phone is opened, the hinge progressively changes the angle between the halves while the panel follows its designed curve. When the phone is closed, the hinge limits the final position and, on Samsung’s documented design, preserves a small gap between the inner surfaces.
This division explains why a strong display material cannot compensate for a damaged hinge, and why a robust hinge cannot make the inner panel immune to point pressure. A phone can have excellent fold-test results yet still suffer a line or dead area after a key is trapped inside.
Care instructions for a softer inner screen
Keep hard and gritty objects out of the fold
Samsung advises against dropping the phone, pressing directly on the fold area, or closing the device with cards, keys, sand or metal powder inside. It also warns against pressing the inner screen with pens, fingernails or keys. Such events can produce spots, lines, cracks or other visible damage.

- Unfold extraordinary with Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold; with Pixel’s largest screen and Gemini, Google’s most advanced AI, it’s made for multitasking and entertainment[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan[2]; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
- Get a head start on syncing your data before it even arrives: After you purchase your new Pixel, look for an email that explains how to transfer your photos, videos, passwords, and more in just a few quick steps[14]
- The gearless, high-strength hinge makes it durable enough to handle about 10 years of folding[3]; plus, Pixel 10 Pro Fold is built with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance[4]
- The brighter-than-ever 8-inch Super Actua Flex display is Pixel’s largest screen yet[12]; and you can use Split Screen to plan a trip, drag and drop images, and open multiple apps at once[5]
Do not remove a factory protector casually
For Pixel Fold, Google says not to peel back the pre-installed screen protector and not to apply a third-party protector. That is a model-specific instruction, not a universal rule for every foldable. Some manufacturers provide an authorized replacement procedure; others may treat unauthorized film removal as damage or exclude it from service coverage. Follow the manual for the exact model.
Clean with the method the maker specifies
Google recommends gently wiping Pixel Fold with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove dust and smudges. Do not assume that a liquid, solvent or disinfectant safe for a conventional phone is safe for a flexible display or hinge. Use only the cleaning materials and quantities permitted by the model’s official instructions, and keep liquid away from openings while the phone is folded or open.
Recognize damage early
- A new line, dark spot, bright spot or crack after pressure or a drop indicates possible panel damage.
- A hinge that suddenly grinds, catches, feels uneven or will not hold positions may have suffered mechanical or debris-related damage.
- A protector lifting at the fold should not be pressed flat or cut with a sharp tool; check the manufacturer’s service guidance instead.
- If the phone will not close evenly, stop forcing it. Continued pressure can turn a hinge or alignment problem into display damage.
How to compare foldable phones intelligently
Fold count alone is a poor buying shortcut. Compare the parts that determine how the phone will behave in your use:
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Display construction | Does the manufacturer identify the inner panel, thin-glass layer, protective layer and factory film? Is the information for the current generation? |
| Protector policy | Can the film be replaced by the maker, and does the manual prohibit removal or third-party films? |
| Hinge range | Does it stay open at useful intermediate angles, and is that capability documented for the model? |
| Crease treatment | What does the maker actually claim about visibility, and under which generation or display structure? |
| Fold-cycle test | Who performed the test, what model was tested, and is the number a certification target rather than a warranty? |
| Water and particle resistance | What is the exact IP rating and laboratory condition? Does the maker warn that fine dust, sand or wear reduce protection? |
Reading the qualification beside each specification prevents a common mistake: treating one manufacturer’s laboratory result as a universal score for all foldables.
Using and closing a foldable safely
- Inspect the inner surface first. Before closing, check for grit, crumbs, cards, keys and other objects. Remove debris with the approved soft cloth rather than scraping the panel.
- Close it along the hinge’s normal path. Use two hands if necessary and avoid twisting one half against the other.
- Keep pressure off the fold line. Do not press the center to force the halves together, especially if resistance feels different from normal.
- Use supported angles for hands-free work. Let the hinge hold the position; do not prop the phone by wedging a hard object against the display.
- Stop after an abnormal event. Following a drop, liquid exposure or sudden hinge change, look for display artifacts and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider if anything is abnormal.
Frequently asked questions
Does a visible crease mean the screen is broken?
Not by itself. Fine bends can be visible depending on viewing angle. A crease accompanied by a new line, spot, crack, touch failure or a change in hinge movement needs service evaluation.
Are all foldable phones built with Samsung’s AMOLED, UTG, protective-layer and film stack?
No. That four-part description is Samsung’s own support explanation. Google describes foldables more generally as layered assemblies using ultra-thin glass and plastics, and other models may use different materials or layer orders.
Can I use a regular screen protector on the inner display?
Do not assume so. Google specifically tells Pixel Fold owners not to remove the pre-installed protector or apply a third-party one. Check the exact phone’s official instructions before installing or replacing film.
