Engineers test lunar rover wheels at several scales: they load and cycle the wheel itself, roll it through prepared soil, drive a complete rover over slopes and rocks, and expose hardware to relevant environmental conditions. No single trial proves a wheel is ready. The aim is to measure how it carries load, develops traction, slips, sinks, resists motion and holds up—and then use those results to predict performance on the Moon, while accounting for what Earth tests cannot reproduce.

Why a lunar rover wheel needs more than a spin test

A wheel can rotate freely in a laboratory and still perform poorly on the Moon. It must support the rover, transmit forces to the ground, move through loose soil, negotiate rocks and slopes, and survive repeated use. Those demands interact: a wheel that grips well in one soil condition may sink more in another, and a wheel’s behavior can change when it meets an obstacle or when the vehicle’s load shifts.

That is why engineers combine mechanical tests, wheel-and-soil experiments, whole-vehicle trials and environmental testing. Each answers a different question. A wheel-level rig can isolate the wheel and control its load or slip; a soil bed reveals how it interacts with a prepared surface; a rover trial captures the effects of the chassis, suspension and controls. Environmental tests address conditions such as temperature extremes and vacuum. Together, the measurements support engineering predictions, but an Earth facility is not the Moon.

What engineers measure

Test results are meaningful only when the conditions are recorded alongside them. Wheel load, soil type and preparation, slope, obstacle geometry, slip, temperature, vacuum, and whether the test uses a single component or a complete rover can all affect the outcome. Comparing two results without those details can make unlike tests appear equivalent.

Measurement What it helps answer
Wheel deflection and applied load How the wheel deforms under force and how it carries the vehicle’s weight.
Loads and torques What forces the wheel and test system experience as it rolls, slips or meets terrain.
Drawbar pull and traction How much useful pulling force the wheel can develop in the tested soil and loading condition.
Thrust versus slip How force changes as the wheel turns at a different rate from its forward motion.
Sinkage and motion resistance How far the wheel presses into the soil and how much the ground resists its movement.
Endurance and physical condition Whether repeated loading or travel produces damage, wear or a change in performance.

These are distinct performance dimensions, not interchangeable scores. Traction alone does not establish durability; a wheel may produce useful pull in a soil bed but still need separate evaluation for impact damage, endurance or environmental exposure.

How testing progresses from the wheel to the rover

1. Check structure, deflection and endurance

Engineers first apply static or repeated loads to understand how a wheel supports force and whether it deforms or suffers damage. Cyclic tests repeat a load to examine endurance rather than relying on a single application. Wheels may also be driven over representative terrain so that impacts and repeated contact can be observed.

NASA Glenn’s XCEL rig performs cyclic radial compression on full-scale wheels or tires in an environmental chamber. That capability allows engineers to examine wheel response under repeated radial loading and in an environmental setting. The XCEL description does not establish a universal number of cycles or a pass/fail threshold for lunar wheels; those criteria depend on the specific design and mission requirements.

2. Isolate wheel motion and controlled slip

Wheel-soil tests help separate the behavior of a wheel from the many additional variables introduced by a rover. NASA Glenn’s XTERra rig drives a single wheel over terrain elements, can impose controlled slip, and measures loads and torques. Its carousel and tire can be driven independently to create forced slip from 0 to 100%. The facility page reports a maximum linear speed on the order of 100 cm/s, depending on load, and a settable vertical force of 1,000 N, with a 2,500 N peak instantaneous force.

Those figures describe the facility’s capabilities, not a required operating range or qualification threshold for every lunar wheel. The ability to control slip is useful because wheel rotation and forward progress are not always the same: a wheel can turn while losing traction or digging into the surface. Recording wheel motion and applied forces under controlled conditions helps engineers compare how a design responds as slip changes.

3. Measure interaction with prepared soil

For soil tests, a wheel or mobility component is placed in a controlled bed of lunar soil simulant. Engineers can vary the load and soil conditions and measure drawbar pull, traction, thrust versus slip, sinkage and motion resistance. The point is not merely to see whether the wheel moves; it is to quantify how much useful movement it produces, how much it slips or sinks, and what force is needed to keep it moving.

NASA’s SLOPE laboratory provides prepared soil beds, obstacles, a drawbar-pull rig and an adjustable slope bed. That combination supports experiments that vary both the surface and the terrain. A drawbar-pull setup focuses on the force a wheel can deliver against resistance, while a slope bed lets engineers investigate behavior on an incline. Results still depend on how the soil is prepared and the test is loaded, so those conditions belong with any reported measurement.

4. Test the complete rover on terrain

A wheel tested alone cannot represent every effect that appears when it is installed on a vehicle. The chassis, suspension, other wheels and control system influence how loads are shared and how the rover reacts to rocks, slopes or loose material. Engineers therefore test assembled rovers on terrain after component-level work has narrowed the questions.

NASA’s account of VIPER wheel testing describes trials on slopes, simulated slips and selected rocks, followed by track inspection and assessment of sinkage, traction and rock maneuvering. This kind of campaign connects controlled wheel measurements to the practical question of how a mobility system crosses terrain. It does not make one rover’s outcome a general performance guarantee for other wheels or missions.

What the VIPER wheel campaign demonstrates

NASA reported that one VIPER wheel traveled 25 miles over three weeks in a lunar-soil-simulant test bed. The campaign included slopes, simulated slips and rocks selected for size, shape and placement. NASA also reported that the wheel was tested against 196 rock configurations involving varied rock shapes, heights and positions. By the end of that test, its physical condition and traction were described as only slightly degraded.

These are project-specific results, not universal qualification requirements. The 25-mile distance does not mean that every lunar wheel must travel that far in a single test, and the 196 configurations are not a standard pass count. They show how a mission-specific program can expose a wheel to varied obstacles and inspect both condition and mobility performance over time.

The selection of rocks itself is part of test design. A test bed needs obstacles that represent the kinds of geometry the team wants to study, and their placement affects the encounter. In NASA’s account, ProtoInnovations CEO Dimi Apostolopoulos described selecting suitable rocks as a major challenge. Simulant and selected rocks make repeatable trials possible, but they remain controlled stand-ins for lunar terrain rather than exact copies of it.

Why lunar soil and gravity complicate Earth testing

Lunar regolith differs from ordinary Earth soil. NASA rover mobility system engineer Arno Rogg described lunar regolith as fluffy because of the Moon’s low gravity and lack of most weathering processes, with particles sharp like broken glass. A simulant can represent selected properties needed for a test, but the result depends on which material was chosen and how the bed was prepared. A test on simulant should therefore be read as evidence about that defined test condition, not as a direct measurement of performance everywhere on the lunar surface.

Gravity creates another challenge. A ground facility can adjust wheel load and terrain, but Earth gravity does not reproduce lunar gravity. NASA TechPort describes research into a small-scale mobility testbed for parabolic-flight tests that simulate lunar gravity, using slope and drawbar-pull measurements. The project record says then-current practice was to scale applied downforce for the target environment—for a lunar mission, to one-sixth of the Earth-gravity value—and that flight data could help verify the scaling and improve predictions.

This is an active engineering question, not proof that all reduced-gravity effects are settled by a simple one-sixth adjustment. The value of parabolic-flight work is that it can provide measurements under simulated reduced gravity to check how well ground-test scaling predicts wheel-soil behavior. Earth tests remain useful, but extrapolation requires assumptions that engineers must examine.

Environmental tests and what is known about standards

Wheel and mobility testing can also include exposure to relevant temperature conditions and vacuum. NASA Glenn lists environmental capabilities alongside terrain testing, and NASA’s historical lunar rover test plan described designs for ambient and thermal-vacuum testing as well as static deflection, endurance and soft-soil mobility. That 1970 contractor report is historical evidence of a proposed test plan; it should not be mistaken for a current standard.

A separate point needs careful dating. A NASA white paper published as an early release in 2025 said that current planetary tire and mobility subsystem testing standards did not exist, and it planned a more thorough version for late 2025. The later version’s status is not established here, so the 2025 statement should not be treated as a verified description of the standards landscape in 2026. It does, however, underline why readers should distinguish a facility capability, a project-specific test procedure and a formally established industry-wide standard.

NASA’s 2026 Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge account provides a useful example of that distinction. Five teams advanced from 128 submissions across 49 countries. Their prototypes were fitted to the 45-kilogram MicroChariot test rover and driven over courses at Johnson’s Rock Yard. NASA described the Rock Yard terrain testing as completed, while lunar-like dust, vacuum and extreme-temperature evaluation were discussed as a possible next phase. Those environmental evaluations were proposed, not reported as completed in that account.

How to interpret a wheel-test result

When reading a claim about a lunar wheel, first identify what was tested: a bare wheel, a mobility component or an assembled rover. Then check the conditions and the outcome actually measured. A report of traction on a prepared bed does not, on its own, establish performance on a slope, resistance to rock impacts, long-term endurance or survival in vacuum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the load and soil: A result is tied to the applied wheel load and the soil type and preparation used.
  • Check terrain geometry: Slope, rock size, shape and position, and other obstacles can change the challenge.
  • Separate slip from progress: A wheel’s rotation is not the same as forward travel; look for slip and traction measurements where relevant.
  • Look for more than one metric: Sinkage, motion resistance, drawbar pull, physical condition and endurance answer different questions.
  • Keep facility limits in context: A rig’s speed or force capability is a test-system specification, not a wheel qualification rule.
  • Ask whether the result transfers: Simulant tests and Earth-gravity tests support predictions, but their limits should be stated.

NASA’s 2026 challenge account also illustrates why designs can face competing demands: one rigid prototype reportedly bounced over some obstacles, while loose material, rocks and slopes placed different demands on the competing designs. A wheel’s compliance and impact absorption may matter in one encounter, while traction, durability, speed or slope behavior may dominate another. No single axis establishes overall suitability.

What a complete test program can establish

A well-designed campaign builds evidence in layers. Mechanical tests show how the wheel responds to loads and repeated use. Controlled wheel-soil experiments quantify traction, slip, sinkage and resistance under recorded conditions. Terrain trials show how wheels, chassis, suspension and controls work together. Environmental exposure investigates behavior under mission-relevant temperature or vacuum conditions. When gravity differs from the test environment, dedicated reduced-gravity experiments can help assess the assumptions used to scale results.

The conclusion engineers can draw is conditional: a wheel performed in specified ways under specified test conditions, and those measurements support predictions for a mission. They cannot make Earth identical to the Moon, turn a prototype challenge into a qualification standard, or substitute one successful measurement for evidence across all the conditions a rover may encounter.
