Some deep-sea fish manage oversized meals through a combination of an unusually wide gape, mobile jaws, prey-retaining teeth and highly distensible stomachs or body tissues. The black swallower is the clearest example: Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) reports that it can swallow a fish up to twice its own length and ten times its weight. That is a reported upper capability for one species, not a typical ratio for deep-sea fish as a group.
The apparent paradox also depends on what “larger” means. A prey animal may be longer than its predator while being relatively light, or many times heavier. Mouth shape alone does not reveal how a fish feeds: the pelican eel has a spectacular expandable mouth but appears to use it mainly as a net for small crustaceans.
What lets a fish take prey that exceeds its own size?
Fish do not need a mouth larger than the entire prey animal in every dimension. They need a gape—the maximum opening between the jaws—large enough to admit the prey’s thickest section, plus a way to keep the animal from escaping while it is being swallowed. Once the prey is inside, an expandable throat, stomach or abdominal wall provides additional room.

- A wide gape: The upper and lower jaws separate far enough to admit a substantial prey item, often headfirst.
- Jaw mobility: A long or highly mobile lower jaw increases the opening without requiring the predator’s whole head to be as large as the prey.
- Retention structures: Teeth, hooks or other surfaces prevent prey from backing out while the jaws close around it.
- Distensible tissues: The throat, stomach and surrounding body wall can stretch around a meal that is much larger than the predator’s normal body profile.
- Whole-prey transport: In species that swallow fish whole, the prey is moved into the oesophagus rather than cut into pieces. The exact transport motions are not directly observed for most black swallowers in the wild.
These features solve different problems. A large mouth gets prey in; teeth hold it; expandable tissues make room afterward. A fish can therefore have the capacity for an extraordinary meal without routinely hunting prey of that size.
The black swallower: the strongest documented example
Its jaws create an opening far larger than its head suggests
WHOI describes the black swallower as having a large mouth and a long lower jaw. Its teeth are hooked and point backward. According to WHOI, those teeth retract while prey enters, then interlock to help keep the meal inside (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, “Creature feature: Black Swallower”).
Backward-pointing teeth work like a one-way retention system. They do not have to slice a large fish into pieces; they make retreat difficult once the prey has passed into the mouth. Retraction is important because fixed, sharply projecting teeth would obstruct the entry of a bulky meal. This combination—temporarily making room, then locking the prey in place—is more significant than the intimidating appearance of the teeth by itself.
A balloon-like stomach accommodates the meal
The black swallower’s stomach is described as balloon-like. It can expand around a fish that would not fit inside the predator’s ordinary, unexpanded body outline. That distensibility is what turns a very large gape into a feasible whole-prey meal: without storage space behind the jaws, the fish could capture prey but could not retain it internally.

WHOI reports that black swallowers can ingest fish up to twice their own length and ten times their weight. Those figures describe reported upper examples for the black swallower, not an average meal and not a general property of deep-sea fishes. “Twice its length” and “ten times its weight” are also different claims: length concerns the prey’s linear dimension, whereas weight concerns the total mass the predator must accommodate and digest.
Why an oversized meal can be fatal
Very large prey carries a serious digestive risk. WHOI notes that black swallowers are rarely seen in their natural habitat, which is reported at roughly 700–3,000 metres depth. Many observations come from animals found at the surface with large, barely digested fish in their stomachs. If the swallowed fish cannot be digested before it decomposes, gases produced during decomposition can make the black swallower buoyant enough to float upward.
Smithsonian Ocean gives the black swallower an approximate length of 25 centimetres and explains the same decomposition-and-gas pathway (Smithsonian Ocean, “Black Swallower,” October 2013). That 25-centimetre description should not be combined with the WHOI ratio as though both sources measured one individual. It is a separate approximate size figure.
Why a huge mouth does not always mean huge prey
The pelican eel uses its mouth more like a net
The pelican eel, also called a gulper eel, has an extensible lower jaw and a pouch-like mouth cavity. Its mouth can expand around water and prey, giving the animal an appearance that suggests it could swallow a very large fish. However, the National Oceanography Centre says examinations of specimens and stomach contents indicate that pelican eels mostly eat small crustaceans (National Oceanography Centre, “Deep-Sea Creatures”).

The likely feeding strategy is different from the black swallower’s famous whole-fish meals. The eel can swim into a concentration of shrimp or other small crustaceans, open its pouch-like mouth and scoop them up. Water is then expelled through the gills while the food remains inside. WHOI describes the same scoop-like jaw, expandable mouth and water-expulsion arrangement (WHOI, “Creature feature: Pelican Eel”).
In this case, expansion increases the volume of a net rather than the maximum size of one captured animal. A mouth that looks capable of engulfing a giant fish may instead be optimized for collecting many small prey items efficiently in a food-poor environment.
How the main adaptations work together
Gape and jaw mobility
Gape is the first physical limit. A predator must create an opening wide enough for the prey’s largest cross-section. A long lower jaw can increase that opening and allow the fish to approach prey at an angle. The relevant comparison is therefore not simply predator length versus prey length; head depth, jaw rotation and prey orientation all matter.

For a long, slender prey fish, entering headfirst may present a smaller cross-section than entering sideways. The available evidence does not document a complete black-swallower attack sequence in the wild, so the precise orientation and timing of each jaw movement should not be presented as observed fact. The anatomy does establish why such entry is physically possible.

Teeth and other retention surfaces
Large prey can push outward while the predator is trying to close its jaws. Backward-curving teeth counter that force by resisting backward motion. In the black swallower, WHOI specifically describes teeth that retract for entry and interlock afterward. This is a retention mechanism, not proof that every deep-sea fish with long teeth feeds in the same way.
Expandable stomachs and body walls
After the prey passes the jaws, the storage problem becomes larger than the mouth problem. A distensible stomach can unfold or stretch around the meal, while surrounding tissues accommodate the temporary increase in volume. The adaptation is useful only if the animal can ultimately digest and absorb the food; the black swallower’s decomposition hazard shows the cost when the meal is too large or digestion is too slow.
Food scarcity favors opportunistic capacity
Deep water generally offers fewer predictable meals than shallow coastal habitats. A fish that can retain and digest an unusually large prey item may gain energy from a rare encounter. That does not mean it searches constantly for prey larger than itself. The evidence supports a capacity for opportunistic feeding, not a measured frequency of oversized meals across deep-sea communities.

The black swallower is not the only deep-sea fish associated with large prey. The Natural History Museum notes that some deep-sea anglerfish have stomachs that allow them to swallow prey larger than themselves, and that viperfish have large jaws useful for catching prey (Natural History Museum, London, “The fishes of the deep sea”).

Those observations should be read as species-level comparisons, not as evidence that all anglerfish or viperfish routinely consume prey at a particular ratio. Different lineages can arrive at similar-looking solutions—large jaws, expandable stomachs or enlarged mouths—while targeting different prey and using different capture tactics.
A different swallowing strategy: the moray eel comparison
Moray eels provide a useful example of how prey transport can vary among fishes, although morays are not being offered here as deep-sea evidence. A 2007 study in Nature documented raptorial pharyngeal jaws in the throat. These secondary jaws project forward, seize prey and then move it back toward the oesophagus (“Raptorial jaws in the throat help moray eels swallow large prey,” Nature, 2007).
The comparison clarifies an important point: swallowing a large item may require more than a wide mouth. Some fish use internal jaw systems to transport prey; others rely mainly on gape, teeth and a distensible stomach. The moray mechanism should not be generalized to deep-sea species without species-specific anatomical evidence.

Black swallowers are rarely observed in their deep habitat, so many dramatic accounts come from specimens recovered at the surface. A stomach containing a very large, barely digested fish demonstrates that ingestion occurred, but it does not establish how often the behavior happens, whether the meal was typical or exceptional, or exactly how the prey was positioned during capture.
Likewise, a large expandable mouth demonstrates potential capacity, not a complete diet. The pelican eel’s stomach contents are especially important because they show that its apparent ability to engulf large prey does not describe its usual food. A 2018 PLOS ONE study emphasizes the diversity and unresolved ecological questions surrounding pelagic saccopharyngiform eels; broad claims about diet and oversized prey should therefore remain species-specific (PLOS ONE, “Resolving deep-sea pelagic saccopharyngiform eel mysteries…”).
No reliable cross-species statistic establishes how frequently deep-sea fish swallow prey larger than themselves. The strongest defensible statement is narrower: some species possess anatomical features that make very large meals possible, and the black swallower has documented specimens and reports illustrating the extreme.
How to interpret a claim about a “fish eating something bigger than itself”
- Check the species: A black-swallower statistic should not be applied to pelican eels, anglerfish or deep-sea fishes generally.
- Separate capacity from diet: A distensible mouth or stomach indicates what may fit, while stomach contents indicate what the animal actually ate.
- Ask whether the comparison is length or mass: “Twice as long” and “ten times heavier” measure different constraints.
- Look for the source and conditions: A surface specimen may reveal an unusual meal and its consequences, not routine behavior in the deep.
- Expect a trade-off: The ability to take a huge meal can carry digestive and buoyancy risks if the prey decomposes before it is processed.
The practical answer in one sentence
Deep-sea fish that swallow oversized prey combine a gape and jaw system large enough to admit the animal, teeth or other structures that hold it, and expandable internal tissues that make room afterward; the black swallower demonstrates the extreme, while the pelican eel demonstrates why an enormous mouth does not by itself prove a diet of giant prey.
