Cuttlefish hide by changing both the visible pattern and the texture of their skin. Pigment organs called chromatophores help form patterns; reflective skin structures also affect their appearance; and raised projections called papillae can make the body look rough or irregular. Their response depends on visual features of the surroundings, so camouflage reduces detection in particular settings rather than making an animal literally invisible.
How does a cuttlefish change its appearance?
Several skin systems contribute, and they do different jobs. Chromatophores alter visible pigment patterns, reflective elements affect how light appears on the skin, and papillae change the skin’s three-dimensional surface.
Chromatophores create pigment patterns
Chromatophores are pigment-filled sacs whose visible area changes as muscles associated with them act. Across the skin, many of these organs can combine into large, changing patterns. Smithsonian Ocean describes them as “thousands of pigment-filled cells that dot the entire body.” Smithsonian Ocean’s cephalopod overview also describes iridophores and leucophores, reflective elements that influence appearance. These structures contribute to how the skin looks, but they do not by themselves explain every aspect of camouflage.

Papillae are muscular skin projections that can rise or flatten. Raising them gives the body a more textured surface; retracting them leaves it smoother. This changes the animal’s outline and how light and shadow fall across its body, allowing texture to complement the pigment pattern.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 2018 study in iScience described rapid papilla expression and retraction, as well as a combination of smooth and striated muscles that can sustain tension without continuing neural input. The authors proposed that this mechanism may reduce the energy needed to maintain a textured disguise. The paper reports individual papillae can be fully expanded or retracted in less than one second, citing earlier work; that is not a timing result newly measured in the 2018 study. How does the background shape the camouflage?
Cuttlefish do not simply reproduce every object around them like a printed photograph. Experiments show that visual properties of the background—including contrast and the size of its elements—help determine which broad body pattern appears. Researchers describe uniform or stipple, mottle, and disruptive patterns; these are different responses to visual conditions, not exact copies of individual background objects.

In experiments with Sepia officinalis, visual cues drove papilla expression even when tactile information was removed. The study also found irregular responses in two sets of papillae, so the details of control are not fully settled. Allen and colleagues’ 2009 study of visual control of papillae addresses that result. Separate work examined how substrate contrast and element size evoke uniform, mottle, or disruptive patterns. The 2008 study on contrast, size, and cuttlefish body patterns reports those experiments.
What is still puzzling scientists?
Color matching despite a lack of color vision
A 2011 hyperspectral-imaging study reported that cuttlefish camouflage can provide a good color match when assessed from the perspective of fish predators, even though the studied cuttlefish lack color vision. This is an observed camouflage outcome, not proof that cuttlefish perceive color as humans do. The study leaves open how they achieve the match. Polarization is related, but not a settled answer
A 1996 study reported polarization sensitivity and patterns, suggesting a possible role in communication or recognition among cuttlefish. That related ability has not been shown to solve the color-coordination puzzle. The 1996 study on polarization vision in cuttlefish explores this possible communication channel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What camouflage can—and cannot—do
Camouflage is a flexible response to a particular visual environment, not a guarantee of invisibility. Pattern, surface texture, background features, and the viewer’s perspective all matter. The strongest explanation established so far is that cuttlefish combine pigment patterns and dynamic skin texture in response to visual cues; precisely how they coordinate some aspects of color remains an open scientific question.
