Cuttlefish camouflage by combining two controllable skin systems. Neural signals expand or contract pigment-filled chromatophores to produce patches and patterns, while separate muscles raise or flatten papillae—small skin projections that change the animal’s three-dimensional texture and outline. Reflective layers called iridophores add structural color by redirecting light. The animal’s eyes assess visible features such as contrast, edges, check size and texture, then the nervous system coordinates an appropriate skin response.
This is not a single color-changing cell and it is not simply a matter of touching the seafloor. Experiments, especially on the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), show visually guided pattern and papilla responses that can operate together or independently.
Three skin mechanisms work together
“Changing color” is shorthand for several physical processes. Cuttlefish appearance depends on pigment, reflected light and surface relief. Each mechanism contributes something different, so separating them makes the camouflage system easier to understand.

The systems are coordinated by the nervous system but are not one indivisible mechanism. Experiments report that chromatophores and papillae can be activated separately, allowing a cuttlefish to alter its pattern without making every skin projection rise, or to alter relief as a distinct response.

How chromatophores create fast color patterns
A pigment sac acts like a variable-sized patch
A chromatophore organ contains a pigment sac surrounded by radial muscles. Neural activation contracts those muscles and changes how much of the sac is exposed at the skin surface. A larger exposed sac makes a stronger, wider patch; relaxation reduces the visible area. By controlling many organs across the body, the nervous system can arrange stripes, spots, mottling or more uniform fields.
The important variable is exposed area, not a pigment sac magically switching between every possible hue. The 2023 review Neural control of cephalopod camouflage describes very rapid neural control of chromatophore activation and coordinated skin patterning in cephalopods. That speed should be treated as a general cephalopod finding rather than a universal stopwatch value for every cuttlefish species or situation.
Pattern is a spatial arrangement, not just a color choice
Changing one chromatophore has a local effect; changing thousands in a coordinated way creates a body-wide pattern. The resulting arrangement can be relatively uniform, stippled, mottled or disruptive. In experiments with common cuttlefish, background contrast and the spatial scale of checks affected which patterning response was expressed. A high-contrast, large-scale background does not present the same visual problem as a finely textured, low-contrast one, so the neural output changes accordingly.
Why reflective skin matters
Cuttlefish skin contains reflective layers, including iridophores, beneath and among pigment structures. These layers alter the light returning to an observer through structural reflection. The 2023 review discusses reflectin-based structural color and describes a limited pigment palette dominated by yellow, red and brown. Combining those pigments with reflected light can produce a much broader range of appearances than pigments alone.

This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: a cuttlefish is not manufacturing an unlimited supply of independently colored pigment cells to copy every background hue. Pigment absorption and structural reflection are optical effects that work together. Illumination, viewing angle and the surrounding scene therefore influence the appearance an observer receives, even when the underlying skin structures are unchanged.
How papillae turn smooth skin into textured relief
Muscular projections alter outline and surface
Papillae are muscular projections in the skin. When they are relaxed, the surface is comparatively smooth. When activated, they rise as bumps, ridges or other relief that makes the animal’s silhouette less regular and can resemble nearby fine-scale texture. Flattening them restores a smoother profile.
Nine distinct sets of papillae were described in Sepia officinalis by Allen and colleagues in 2009. That count belongs to the species and anatomy examined in that study; it is not a universal number for every cuttlefish.

Activation and relaxation have their own control machinery
Research published in 2018 identified motoneurons and neurotransmitters involved in papilla activation and relaxation. The papillae can express and retract quickly, and sustained muscle tension can hold a projection in place without continuous neural input. This lets the animal maintain a three-dimensional profile while reducing the need for uninterrupted firing of the command pathway.

The 2018 work also found distinct control circuits for chromatophores and papillae. That separation explains why a color pattern and a texture response can be matched when useful, but can also be adjusted independently. It is more accurate to describe the skin as a set of linked actuators than as one all-purpose “color cell.”
How the eyes select a camouflage response
Visual information is sufficient for tested papilla responses
In the 2009 study, visual presentations of substrates elicited papilla responses. Tactile contact with the presented surface was not required for the responses tested. The cuttlefish therefore can begin configuring its skin from what it sees, rather than having to touch a surface first.
The same study reported irregular responses in some papilla groups. That finding matters: the overall visual-control principle is clear, but the role of every individual papilla set is not fully mapped.

A 2008 Vision Research study tested substrate contrast and check size while recording uniform or stippled, mottle and disruptive body patterns. The results show that pattern selection depends on the visual statistics of the background, including how strongly features contrast and the scale at which they are arranged. The animal is responding to measurable image properties, not merely selecting a favorite color.

Edges and texture can trigger disruptive patterning
Another 2008 study on common cuttlefish examined edges and visual texture. Isolated edges were sufficient to elicit disruptive patterning, even without a complete object outline. The experiments also found that cuttlefish could distinguish texture-defined objects when the objects and background had the same mean luminance. In other words, average brightness alone does not describe everything the visual system can use; spatial arrangement and texture carry information too.
From seeing a background to changing the skin
The camouflage response can be understood as a sequence of linked operations:
- Capture the scene: the eyes register features of the visible substrate or surrounding objects.
- Extract useful structure: neural processing evaluates contrast, edges, spatial scale, texture and the arrangement of light and dark regions.
- Select a pattern class: the output may be relatively uniform or stippled, mottled or disruptive, depending on the visual conditions.
- Drive chromatophore muscles: neural signals expand or contract pigment sacs to place visible patches across the skin.
- Adjust optical appearance: reflective layers contribute structural color and modify the light returned from the patterned surface.
- Shape the surface: papilla motoneurons raise or relax selected projections, changing relief and the apparent outline.
These operations are coordinated, but they do not have to occur as an all-or-nothing package. Separate circuits permit a pattern change without a matching papilla response, or a relief adjustment that is not accompanied by a completely new pigment arrangement.
What lighting adds to three-dimensional camouflage
Camouflage is judged through light, so illumination can change which skin configuration is useful. A 2025 study in Proceedings of the Royal Society B found papilla expression associated with contrast from object features and with dynamic caustic lighting under the conditions tested. Caustics are moving, water-shaped patterns of light and shadow. They can add apparent structure to a scene and alter the contrast that reaches an observer.

This result should be read as an experimental finding, not as a rule that every lighting change always produces a papilla response. It shows that three-dimensional camouflage can be influenced by both the objects in a scene and changing illumination across those objects.
What cuttlefish camouflage does—and does not—prove
It is not perfect pixel-by-pixel copying
The experiments demonstrate responses to selected visual features, not a complete ability to reproduce every detail of an arbitrarily complex natural scene. A cuttlefish can use contrast, edges and texture, but the studies do not establish flawless matching under all backgrounds, distances, viewing angles or lighting conditions.
It is not evidence of conscious visual planning
Neural control and flexible responses do not by themselves reveal subjective experience or conscious planning. The supported conclusion is narrower: visual information is processed and converted into coordinated activity in chromatophores, reflective skin and papillae.

Species and context matter
Much of the named experimental evidence concerns the common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis. Anatomy, papilla organization and response strength can vary among species, so findings from this animal should not automatically be presented as an identical blueprint for every cuttlefish. The broad division between pigment control, reflective optics and muscular relief is well supported, while fine details of every papilla group and every natural setting remain active research questions.
Why color and texture are more effective together
A flat color pattern can resemble the average tones of a background but still leave a recognizable outline. Raised papillae attack that second problem by breaking up the contour and adding small-scale shadows and highlights. Conversely, a textured surface without an appropriate pigment pattern may have the wrong large-scale contrast. By controlling both appearance and relief, the cuttlefish addresses different visual cues at once.
The result is a biological camouflage system with three complementary layers: chromatophores arrange absorbent pigments, iridophores and related structures control reflected light, and papillae reshape the surface. Vision supplies the information needed to tune those layers to the scene, while separate neural pathways preserve the flexibility to combine or separate their actions.
