Cosmologists estimate the universe’s present expansion rate with a parameter called the Hubble constant, H0. They compare independently measured galaxy distances with recession rates inferred from redshift, while correcting for galaxies’ local motions. The most direct nearby-universe approach is a calibrated distance ladder—geometric parallax, Cepheid variables and Type Ia supernovae. A separate early-universe approach fits a cosmological model to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and extrapolates that model to today. Gravitational-wave standard sirens, strong-lens time delays, baryon acoustic oscillations and galaxy clusters provide additional checks. These methods do not yet agree perfectly, producing the unresolved Hubble tension.
What expansion rate are cosmologists measuring?
H0 summarizes the present-day relationship between distance and expansion-driven recession in a sufficiently nearby, smooth region of the universe. It is reported in kilometres per second per megaparsec (km/s/Mpc). One megaparsec (Mpc) is about 3.26 million light-years, so the unit means that, in a simplified description, recession speed increases by roughly H0 kilometres per second for every additional megaparsec of distance.
That statement is not a claim that the universe is expanding into an empty space outside it, nor that every galaxy is moving away at exactly the predicted rate. Galaxies also have peculiar velocities caused by local gravity: a galaxy can move toward a group, cluster or neighboring structure while the overall cosmic expansion carries space on larger scales. Astronomers therefore measure many galaxies, model their local motions and statistically fit the expansion signal rather than relying on one object.
The central observational relationship is between distance and redshift. Distance must be established with a calibrated astronomical technique. Redshift records how a galaxy’s light has been stretched, but at relatively small distances the measured redshift includes both expansion and peculiar motion. At larger distances, cosmologists model the full expansion history rather than treating redshift as a simple speed.

The local distance ladder: calibrating one ruler with another
The local route builds a chain of distance indicators. Each rung is calibrated using objects whose distances were established by an earlier, more direct method. Once the chain reaches bright objects visible across much larger volumes, their distances can be compared with host-galaxy redshifts to estimate H0.
1. Geometric parallax sets the first rung
As Earth orbits the Sun, a nearby star appears to shift slightly against much more distant background stars. This angle, called parallax, gives a geometric distance through triangulation. Because the method is based on geometry rather than an assumption about the star’s intrinsic brightness, calibrated nearby stars provide the foundation for the ladder.
2. Cepheid variables extend the calibration
Cepheid variables brighten and fade in a regular pattern. Their pulsation period is related to their intrinsic luminosity, so measuring the period tells astronomers how bright the star truly is. Comparing that intrinsic brightness with the star’s observed brightness gives a distance. Cepheids are far brighter than ordinary nearby stars and can be observed in other galaxies.
Parallax-calibrated Cepheids are used to establish the Cepheid brightness scale. Astronomers then observe Cepheids in galaxies that also contain Type Ia supernovae. Those shared host galaxies transfer the distance calibration to the supernovae.
3. Type Ia supernovae reach the distant nearby universe
Type Ia supernovae are bright stellar explosions with a useful, calibratable relationship between their light-curve properties and intrinsic luminosity. After their brightness scale has been set using galaxies with Cepheids, the supernovae can be detected at much greater distances than individual Cepheids. Their apparent brightness then supplies distances to many host galaxies.

Finally, cosmologists compare each host’s distance with its redshift, correct for peculiar velocities where necessary and fit the distance–redshift relation. Combining many supernovae reduces random scatter and yields a local estimate of H0.
Why calibration errors matter
Uncertainty at an early rung propagates through every later rung. Important effects include interstellar dust, crowding and blending of neighboring stars, photometric zero-point calibration, differences among supernova populations and the galaxies’ peculiar velocities. A small bias in Cepheid brightness, for example, changes the inferred distances of the supernova hosts and therefore changes H0.
The James Webb Space Telescope’s sharper infrared observations help separate Cepheids from nearby blended stars and are less affected by dust than visible-light measurements. The European Space Agency reports agreement between Webb infrared and Hubble optical Cepheid observations over the range used for the ladder. That agreement is an important cross-check against particular Cepheid measurement problems; it does not remove every astrophysical or calibration uncertainty and does not by itself explain the Hubble tension.
The early-universe route: infer today’s value from the CMB
The CMB is relic radiation released when the early universe became transparent. Its temperature and polarization patterns preserve information about the matter content, geometry and expansion conditions at that time. Cosmologists fit those patterns with a framework such as the standard Lambda cold dark matter (ΛCDM) model.
The resulting CMB value is not a direct measurement of today’s expansion. The fit determines cosmological parameters in the early universe, and the model’s equations then predict how the universe should have expanded from that epoch to the present. The inferred H0 therefore depends on the data, the model and assumptions such as the composition and behavior of dark matter and dark energy.

This distinction matters when two numbers are called “measurements.” The distance ladder primarily measures distances and redshifts in the relatively local universe. A CMB analysis measures early-universe patterns and obtains a present-day H0 by extrapolation. Agreement would support the model connecting those epochs; disagreement could indicate an overlooked systematic effect, an incomplete model or physics not included in ΛCDM.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Where baryon acoustic oscillations fit
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) are a preferred separation scale in the distribution of galaxies. They originated as sound waves in the hot early universe and were frozen into the later arrangement of matter. Large galaxy surveys detect this feature as a standard ruler.
BAO observations measure combinations of distances along and across the line of sight, together with the expansion history at the redshifts surveyed. BAO alone does not determine H0. NASA’s LAMBDA guidance notes that the ruler must be calibrated with complementary information, such as CMB constraints, large-scale-structure data or the cosmic baryon abundance. Calling a BAO result “independent” therefore requires stating which calibration and cosmological assumptions were used.

Gravitational-wave standard sirens
A merger of black holes or neutron stars produces a gravitational-wave waveform whose amplitude and evolution encode the source’s luminosity distance. This makes the event a “standard siren,” the gravitational-wave analogue of a standard candle, without using Cepheids or Type Ia supernovae.
To turn distance into an expansion measurement, astronomers also need redshift. If the merger has an electromagnetic counterpart, its host galaxy can provide that redshift. Otherwise, researchers use the gravitational-wave localization region and a catalog of possible host galaxies, treating the redshift statistically. Host identification, incomplete galaxy catalogs, peculiar velocities and detection-selection effects all contribute uncertainty. Forecasts in the 2017 Chen–Fishbach–Holz paper were simulations of future precision, not achieved present-day performance.

Strong-lens time delays
A variable background source, such as a quasar, can be gravitationally lensed into several images by a foreground galaxy. The images follow different paths through curved spacetime, so a flare or brightness change arrives at different times. Combining those delays with the lens and source redshifts and a model of the lens mass distribution constrains distance combinations that depend on H0.
The result is sensitive to how accurately the lens’s mass—including dark matter and nearby structures—is modeled, as well as to the cosmological assumptions used in the distance calculation.
Galaxy clusters using X-rays and the thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect
Hot gas in a galaxy cluster emits X-rays and distorts CMB photons through the thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect. Joint measurements can constrain the cluster’s angular-diameter distance. With the cluster redshift and a cosmological model, those distances yield an H0 estimate.
Gas-density and temperature profiles, departures from idealized cluster structure and instrument calibration are important sources of systematic uncertainty. Cluster analyses therefore provide a complementary route rather than a replacement for the distance ladder or CMB fit.
How the methods differ
| Method | Primary observations | How H0 enters | Main dependencies and risks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local distance ladder | Parallax, Cepheids, Type Ia supernovae, galaxy redshifts | Distances are calibrated step by step and compared with recession inferred from redshift | Dust, crowding and blending, photometric calibration, supernova populations and peculiar velocities |
| CMB | Temperature and polarization patterns of relic radiation | Fit an early-universe cosmological model and extrapolate its expansion to today | Model assumptions and the accuracy of the CMB and parameter inference |
| BAO | Galaxy-distribution standard ruler | Measure expansion-related distances after calibrating the ruler | Cannot determine H0 alone; requires complementary calibration and assumptions |
| Standard sirens | Gravitational-wave merger waveform plus host or statistical redshift | Waveform gives luminosity distance, which is paired with redshift | Host identification, catalog completeness, peculiar velocities and selection effects |
| Strong-lens delays | Time delays among multiple images and lens redshift | Lens-model distance combinations depend on H0 | Lens mass modeling, line-of-sight structure and cosmological assumptions |
| Cluster X-ray/SZ | X-ray emission and thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich signal | Joint data estimate angular-diameter distances | Gas profiles, cluster physics and instrument calibration |
These methods differ along four practical axes: whether they are local and comparatively direct or early-universe and model-based; which astrophysical calibrations dominate; how strongly the result depends on a cosmological model; and how many objects are available for reducing statistical uncertainty. “Independent” should therefore mean independent of a particular calibration or data set, not free of every shared assumption.

What values are currently reported?
There is no single settled value in the sources summarized here, so every number needs its method and date.
- In a report dated April 13, 2026, NASA Science described an international collaboration’s Local Distance Network framework as finding a nearby-universe expansion rate of about 73.5 km/s/Mpc. The framework combined several distance indicators. NASA said other estimates discussed in that report typically ranged from 73 to 76 km/s/Mpc. The underlying analysis was published April 10, 2026, in Astronomy & Astrophysics. NASA’s news summary does not provide the analysis’s uncertainty interval or a method-by-method numerical breakdown.
- NASA’s Hubble overview gives broad explanatory ranges of roughly 70–76 km/s/Mpc for space-telescope distance-ladder measurements and 67–68 km/s/Mpc for values derived from the CMB. These are approximate ranges in an overview, not a complete current meta-analysis or a replacement for the individual papers.
The gap between the local and CMB-inferred ranges is called the Hubble tension. It is a continuing disagreement between nearby-universe measurements and values inferred from early-universe observations under a cosmological model. The difference is large enough to motivate extensive tests, but the evidence here does not establish a resolution or prove new physics.
Why the tension has not been settled
A convincing explanation must survive several independent checks. Local analyses must control crowding, dust, calibration and galaxy motions. Early-universe analyses must test the CMB data, parameter degeneracies and the assumptions linking the early universe to today. Alternative methods add leverage, but they bring their own systematics rather than acting as perfectly error-free referees.

Webb’s infrared Cepheid measurements agreeing with Hubble’s optical measurements reduce concern that one specific Cepheid observation problem explains the difference. They do not show that every ladder systematic is negligible, nor do they identify whether the remaining disagreement comes from an unrecognized systematic, an inadequate cosmological model or physics not yet understood. The same caution applies to any new value: a multi-method result is more robust than a single indicator, but its uncertainty and shared assumptions still need to be examined.
How a cosmologist turns observations into H0
- Choose the observable and sample. This may be nearby stars and Cepheids, supernova hosts, CMB maps, galaxy-survey volumes, gravitational-wave events, lenses or clusters.
- Calibrate the distance or ruler. Use geometric parallax for the first ladder rung, a physical CMB model, a BAO calibration, a waveform model or a lens/cluster model, depending on the method.
- Measure redshift and account for local motion. Spectroscopy supplies redshift; nearby galaxies require corrections or statistical modeling of peculiar velocities.
- Fit a population, not one object. A likelihood or equivalent statistical model combines many measurements, propagates uncertainties and includes correlations between objects or instruments.
- Vary assumptions and systematics. Analysts test dust prescriptions, photometric zero points, lens mass models, galaxy-catalog completeness, cluster gas models and cosmological parameters.
- Report the result with its scope. A credible value states whether it is local or model-inferred, the data and date, the uncertainty interval, and which assumptions are shared with other methods.
This workflow explains why two analyses can use the same broad idea yet report different values: calibration choices, sample selection, covariance treatment and model assumptions can all affect the inferred parameter.
What to look for when reading a claimed expansion-rate measurement
- Is the number a direct nearby distance–redshift result or an early-universe model extrapolation?
- Which rung, ruler, waveform or physical model establishes the distance scale?
- Are peculiar velocities, dust, blending, lens structure, gas profiles or selection effects included?
- Does the quoted precision come from a current data set or from a forecast?
- Are the date, region, instrument, sample and uncertainty interval stated next to the number?
- Could two apparently separate methods share calibration data or cosmological assumptions?
Used this way, H0 is more than a single headline number. It is the output of a chain linking geometry, stellar physics, exploding stars, large-scale structure, relic radiation and statistical modeling. Comparing those chains—and understanding where they rely on the same assumptions—is how cosmologists test whether the universe’s expansion history is fully described by the current model.
