For cash you need on a known near-term date, a money market fund is usually the steadier tool: most retail and government funds seek a $1-a-share net asset value (NAV), while a bond ETF trades at a changing market price that can be below its NAV when you sell. That stability is an objective, not a guarantee; neither product is FDIC-insured, and either can produce a loss. The right choice depends on your deadline, tolerance for an interim loss, the fund’s holdings and duration, taxes, fees, and how quickly you need to withdraw.
What you are comparing
Money market funds
A money market fund is a mutual fund that invests in liquid, short-term debt securities, cash, and cash equivalents. Its yield changes over time and generally follows short-term interest rates. The category includes government, prime, and tax-exempt funds, whose portfolios and risks differ materially.
Most retail and government money market funds seek a stable NAV, commonly $1 per share. That is a pricing convention and operating objective, not principal insurance. If a stable-NAV fund’s NAV deviates by more than half a cent from $1.00, it must reprice. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance states: “Money invested in a money market fund, like money invested in any mutual fund, is not guaranteed by the FDIC like bank accounts are.” That statement appears in its staff Investor Bulletin Money Market Funds: Investor Bulletin, dated November 4, 2024.

A bond ETF is an exchange-traded fund that owns a portfolio of bonds and trades on a stock exchange. The mandate may cover government, municipal, investment-grade corporate, high-yield, floating-rate, or other bonds. Holdings’ maturities and duration determine how sensitive the portfolio is to interest-rate changes.

You can buy or sell an ETF during exchange hours through a brokerage account. The ETF has an underlying portfolio NAV, but your order executes at a market price that can be higher or lower than NAV. A sale therefore can produce a loss even when the portfolio’s marked NAV appears unchanged, especially when bid-ask spreads are wide or markets are stressed.
Why an ultra-short bond fund is not the same thing
Ultra-short bond funds can hold a broader range of securities than money market funds. Their NAV fluctuates, and the SEC notes that they generally carry more risk than money market funds. A short maturity label does not turn a bond fund into a cash-equivalent product.
Bond ETF versus money market fund at a glance
| Factor | Bond ETF | Money market fund |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Exchange-traded bond fund; mandate, credit quality, maturities, and duration vary. | Mutual fund holding liquid short-term debt, cash, and cash equivalents; government, prime, and tax-exempt categories have different rules. |
| Price and principal | NAV and market price fluctuate. Market price can trade at a premium or discount to NAV. Bond values generally fall when rates rise. | Most retail and government funds seek a stable NAV, typically $1, but losses and a “break the buck” event are possible. |
| Yield | Reflects portfolio income, price changes, expenses, and reinvestment. A quoted yield does not remove market risk. | Changes over time and generally reflects short-term rates. In very low-rate periods, expenses can exceed income. |
| Access | Intraday exchange trading through a brokerage account; execution price is not guaranteed to equal NAV. | Generally redeemable on business days at NAV; cutoff times, settlement, and account availability depend on the fund and account. |
| Primary risks | Interest-rate, credit, spread, prepayment, market-price, and trading-liquidity risk. Government-bond ETFs can also lose value. | Stable-NAV, credit, liquidity, and fee risk. Shares are not FDIC-insured; specified liquidity fees can apply to some funds in stressed conditions. |
| Taxes and costs | Expense ratio, possible brokerage and bid-ask costs, and taxable distributions depend on the fund and account. | Expense ratio and tax treatment depend on whether the fund is taxable or tax-exempt; municipal income is not automatically exempt from every tax. |
How each product can gain or lose value
Interest-rate risk in a bond ETF
When market rates rise, existing fixed-rate bonds generally become less attractive than newly issued bonds, so their prices fall. Longer-maturity and higher-duration portfolios usually react more to a given rate move than shorter-duration portfolios. Falling rates can lift bond prices, but that is a market outcome, not a promised return.

A bond ETF also has credit and spread risk: a deterioration in an issuer’s finances or in market risk appetite can reduce prices even if benchmark interest rates are unchanged. Callable bonds add prepayment risk because issuers may repay when rates fall, forcing the fund to reinvest at lower yields. A government-bond label does not eliminate interest-rate or market-price losses.
NAV and market-price risk in an ETF
During normal markets, authorized participants and other traders tend to keep an ETF’s market price near its NAV, but the relationship is not exact. At any moment, supply and demand, trading costs, stale or hard-to-price bond quotations, and market stress can create a premium or discount. A market sell order can therefore realize less than the portfolio’s reported NAV. Limit orders can control the maximum price difference you will accept, but they may not execute.

What stable NAV does and does not mean
A stable-NAV money market fund generally records each share at $1, making account values easier to use for near-term cash planning. The fund still owns securities that can lose value or become difficult to sell. If losses push the NAV below the permitted range, the fund must reprice; a shareholder can then receive less than the amount invested. A stable NAV is not a bank guarantee, a promise of positive returns, or protection from inflation.
Liquidity fees and redemption pressure
Institutional prime and institutional tax-exempt funds are generally required to charge a liquidity fee when daily net redemptions exceed 5% of net assets, subject to the qualifications described by the SEC’s 2024 investor bulletin. The fee is designed to allocate some costs of raising cash to redeeming shareholders. Check the current prospectus to see whether a particular fund is subject to this rule and how it operates.
Yield is not a reliable winner-takes-all comparison
Money market fund yields
Money market yields reset as short-term rates and portfolio holdings change. A seven-day yield, compound yield, or other quoted measure describes a particular calculation period; it is not a forward promise. Expenses can consume most or all income when short-term rates are very low. Compare the current yield measure, its date, the expense ratio, and the fund’s waiver policy rather than relying on an old headline number.
Bond ETF yields and total return
An ETF’s distribution yield comes from bond coupons and realized portfolio activity, while its market price can rise or fall. Total return therefore combines income, price movement, expenses, and reinvestment. A higher distribution yield may reflect lower-quality credit, longer duration, falling market prices, or a changing portfolio. It does not make a fund suitable for money needed on a fixed date.
No synchronized current yield comparison establishes a universal winner. Rates, fees, portfolio composition, tax status, and the date of measurement must all match before two figures are comparable.

Money market fund categories matter
| Category | What it generally holds | Relevant rule or consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Government | U.S. government securities, government agency securities, repurchase agreements, cash, and other qualifying assets. | The SEC’s 2024 investor education material says these funds invest 99.5% or more of total assets in specified very liquid investments. They still are not FDIC-insured and can have NAV or liquidity risk. |
| Prime | Primarily taxable short-term corporate and bank debt and other eligible instruments. | Credit and liquidity conditions of private issuers matter. Institutional prime funds can be subject to the 5%-of-net-assets liquidity-fee rule described above. |
| Tax-exempt | Generally municipal securities whose interest is intended to be exempt from federal income tax. | The SEC’s 2024 material says these funds generally invest 80% or more of assets in municipal securities. Not every distribution is necessarily exempt from every federal, state, local, or alternative tax. |
| Retail versus institutional | Both may use similar names but serve different shareholder classes and operating requirements. | Institutional prime and institutional tax-exempt funds have specific liquidity-fee requirements in qualifying redemption conditions. Read the prospectus rather than inferring rules from the label. |
Access, settlement, and cash timing
When you need exchange-hour flexibility
An ETF can be traded while the exchange is open, so you can choose an intraday price and use limit orders. That flexibility comes with a brokerage account, bid-ask spread, possible commission or platform charge, and the risk that the market price is temporarily far from NAV. Selling just before a payment date can lock in an unfavorable price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen you need a predictable redemption process
Money market fund shares are generally redeemed on business days at the fund’s NAV. The practical arrival of cash depends on the fund’s cutoff time, the brokerage or retirement account, and bank-transfer processing. Verify those terms before treating the balance as same-day spending money. A fund that appears in a brokerage sweep arrangement may follow different operational rules from a fund you purchase directly.
Do not confuse a fund with a bank deposit
A money market deposit account is a bank product that may qualify for FDIC coverage within legal limits. A money market fund is a mutual fund. The names sound similar, but the insurance, pricing, and withdrawal rules are different.
Taxes and expenses to check
Fund expenses
Every fund’s expense ratio reduces the return delivered to shareholders. Compare like-for-like share classes and check whether a temporary fee waiver is supporting the published yield. A waiver can expire, raising future expenses even if the portfolio is unchanged.
Taxable and tax-exempt income
Taxable money market funds generally distribute taxable income. Tax-exempt funds seek municipal income that may receive federal tax benefits, but the exact treatment depends on the distribution and your jurisdiction; some income may be taxable or subject to other rules. Read the fund’s tax information and consider your state of residence.

ETF tax assumptions
ETF tax results depend on the account, distributions, holding period, and your circumstances. Do not assume that every ETF is automatically more tax-efficient than every mutual fund. The SEC’s characteristics bulletin notes that there is no ETF-versus-mutual-fund tax difference inside a tax-advantaged account; withdrawals and account rules still control the outcome.
Choose by the date and consequence of needing the cash
| Your situation | Features that usually fit better | Questions to resolve before investing |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency reserve or bill due within weeks | Stable-NAV objective, simple redemption, and low price volatility are usually more important than reaching for additional yield. | Is the fund’s redemption time compatible with the payment? Is it government, prime, or tax-exempt? What fees apply? |
| Known payment in a few months | A money market fund often reduces the chance that a market decline arrives on the payment date. | Could a rate move, fee change, or liquidity event affect the amount available? Keep the maturity date and access terms explicit. |
| Cash with an uncertain date and tolerance for interim loss | A short-duration bond ETF may be considered if you can accept market-price and NAV fluctuations and do not need a guaranteed amount on a fixed day. | What is the effective duration, credit mix, spread exposure, average maturity, and bid-ask spread? |
| Tax-sensitive cash reserve | Either structure may fit, but the fund’s tax character and your account type should drive the comparison. | Which distributions are taxable in your federal, state, and local situation? Are you investing in a tax-advantaged account? |
The shorter and less flexible your deadline, the less room you have to wait for a bond ETF to recover from a price decline. A bond ETF becomes more defensible only when you can tolerate that uncertainty and the portfolio’s duration and credit risk match your objective.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical fund-selection checklist
- Write down the cash date. Use the earliest date you might need the money, not an average or hoped-for date.
- Set a loss tolerance. Decide whether a temporary or realized loss would force you to delay the payment. If any shortfall is unacceptable, exclude products whose NAV or market price can fluctuate.
- Identify the structure. Confirm whether the product is a money market fund, an ultra-short bond fund, or a bond ETF. Do not rely on a marketing name.
- Read the holdings and duration. For an ETF, check maturity, effective duration, credit quality, issuer concentration, callable exposure, and the share of government versus corporate or municipal bonds. For a money market fund, identify the category and principal types of instruments.
- Compare net expenses. Include the expense ratio, any waiver, brokerage or platform charges, and the ETF’s bid-ask spread. Use the current prospectus and shareholder report.
- Verify taxes. Determine whether distributions are taxable, whether municipal income is relevant to your jurisdiction, and whether the account is tax-advantaged.
- Check access mechanics. Confirm business-day redemption, cutoff times, settlement, transfer limits, and whether the balance is available for the payment method you intend to use.
- Check pricing behavior. For an ETF, review typical premiums, discounts, and spreads and use limit orders when appropriate. For a stable-NAV fund, understand the possibility of repricing and any liquidity-fee conditions.
- Recheck before the deadline. A fund’s duration, holdings, expenses, tax status, and operating terms can change. Reconcile the choice with the latest prospectus rather than an old comparison.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “cash” means no loss
Neither product is a bank deposit or FDIC-insured. A money market fund can reprice, and a bond ETF can lose value through rates, credit, spreads, or an ETF discount. Keep the distinction visible in your cash plan.
Chasing the highest displayed yield
Yield is backward-looking or based on a defined calculation period. It can be supported by a temporary waiver, a riskier portfolio, or a falling market price. Compare risk, duration, expenses, and tax treatment alongside the yield measure and date.

Ignoring duration because the ETF name says “short”
“Short-term” and “ultra-short” do not specify a guaranteed price range. A fund can hold longer or lower-quality securities than you expect. Read the duration and holdings rather than inferring them from the title.

Using a market order for a large ETF sale
A market order accepts the best available bid, which may be unusually low during a volatile period. A limit order can cap the minimum acceptable price, although it may remain unfilled. Check the spread and market depth before trading.
Confusing a stable NAV with a guarantee
The $1 convention makes transactions simple; it does not promise that every shareholder will receive $1. Read the fund’s disclosure on repricing, liquidity, and redemption restrictions.
Assuming every municipal distribution is tax-free
Tax-exempt status is specific to the income and the tax rules that apply to you. Review the fund’s tax documents and your jurisdiction before choosing a tax-exempt fund for a cash reserve.
Bottom line for short-term cash
For money required on a short, fixed schedule, a money market fund—especially one whose category, holdings, expenses, and redemption terms you have verified—usually aligns better with cash management than a bond ETF. Its stable-NAV objective can reduce day-to-day price uncertainty, but it is not insurance and does not eliminate loss or liquidity risk.
A bond ETF is a market-priced investment, not a cash substitute by default. It may offer broader exposure or different income potential, but rates, credit events, duration, bid-ask spreads, and premiums or discounts can leave you with less than you invested when the bill comes due. Choose it only when the time horizon and risk tolerance leave room for that uncertainty, and make the decision from the current fund documents rather than from a yield headline.
