Planets around neutron stars have been confirmed; planets around black holes remain a theoretical possibility in the evidence considered here. The distinction is not simply that one kind is harder to see: astronomers have measured planets around a pulsar from changes in its radio pulses, while a 2019 model describes how planets might form in the disk around an active supermassive black hole. That model is not a discovery, and it does not place a planet near the black hole’s event horizon.

What has actually been found?

The clearest comparison is between observed neutron-star planets and a proposed black-hole planet-formation pathway. The confirmed example is the system around PSR B1257+12, a rapidly rotating neutron star known as a pulsar. Astronomers inferred its planets by tracking changes in the arrival times of the star’s radio pulses. NASA’s account of the 1992 discovery says Aleksander Wolszczan used Arecibo to find three planets. A later systematic study describes the system’s planets as approximately Earth-mass and treats it as a unique confirmed example of planets around a pulsar.

That evidence is fundamentally different from the black-hole case discussed here. Wada, Tsukamoto and Kokubo’s 2019 theoretical work models dust growth and planet formation in the circumnuclear disk around a supermassive black hole in an active galactic nucleus (AGN). It estimates that a planet-forming outcome could reach about 10 Earth masses. That is a model result, not a measurement of an observed planet. The sources considered here do not establish a confirmed catalog of planets orbiting black holes.

This distinction should not be inflated into a claim that a planet around any black hole has been disproved. The available material does not settle the full observational census across all black-hole masses. It supports a narrower conclusion: neutron-star planets have a confirmed example, whereas the cited black-hole pathway remains theoretical.

It is also important to keep the type of black hole in view. The 2019 proposal concerns supermassive black holes in AGNs, not a confirmed population of planets orbiting stellar-mass black holes. A claim about planet formation in one kind of black-hole environment should not be generalized into a discovery around every kind.

How does pulsar timing reveal a planet?

A pulsar emits repeating radio pulses as it rotates. Because the pulses arrive with remarkable regularity, astronomers can use the pulsar as a clock. If the pulsar and a planet orbit their shared center of mass, the pulsar’s position changes slightly over the orbit. Its distance from Earth therefore changes too, shifting the observed pulse arrival times. A repeating pattern in those timing variations can reveal the companion’s gravitational influence.

This is an indirect detection: the planet is inferred from the motion of its host, not seen as a resolved disk or photographed beside the pulsar. It is also a method with an important complication. Pulsars can have intrinsic timing noise, and changes in their magnetospheres can alter the pulse signal. Those effects may imitate or obscure orbital patterns. A periodic residual on its own is not enough; astronomers must distinguish a stable orbital explanation from changes generated by the pulsar itself.

The scale of the search is useful context, but it should not be confused with a planet count. A 2022 study applied Bayesian methods for handling timing noise to about 800 pulsars in the Jodrell Bank Observatory timing archive. That figure describes the study’s search sample, not the number of systems with planets. A search through many pulsars is not equivalent to finding many planetary systems.

Timing is powerful because it turns a tiny change in the host’s motion into a measurable shift in an otherwise regular signal. But the same precision makes interpretation important: a candidate orbital pattern has to be assessed against pulsar behavior that can vary on its own. The 2022 search’s use of Bayesian timing-noise methods reflects that challenge. It does not mean that every pulsar in the archive was found to have planets, or that any unexplained timing variation should be labeled an orbit.

What is known about planet formation around neutron stars?

Confirmation that a planet orbits a neutron star does not establish a single route by which it formed. Neutron stars are compact remnants left after stellar evolution, commonly associated with supernovae, and the conditions that produce a planetary companion can be very different from the formation of planets around an ordinary young star. Several pathways have been proposed; they are alternatives or possibilities, not a universal history for every system.

Material left after a supernova

In a fallback-disk scenario, some material does not escape after the supernova and remains around the newborn neutron star. That material could form a disk and, in a suitable model, later assemble into planets. This is a proposed explanation for how a pulsar might acquire a new planetary system, not a claim that all pulsar planets formed this way.

The appeal of this pathway is that it gives the neutron star material from its own stellar aftermath. It is distinct from a planet surviving the star’s earlier evolution: one proposal begins with debris retained after the explosion, while the other requires an object to persist through the changes that produced the neutron star. The existence of planets around PSR B1257+12 does not, by itself, tell us which history occurred there.

A companion disrupted or changed by evolution

Another possibility is that a neutron star’s companion is disrupted, evaporated, or otherwise altered during the system’s evolution, leaving material from which a disk or planets could form. A separate possibility is that an object survives earlier stellar evolution. The proposed histories differ in where the material comes from and what it has endured; observations of a planet’s present orbit do not by themselves select one history.

There are also cases where a low-mass companion’s label and origin need care. A very low mass alone does not prove that an object formed like a planet in a disk around its current host. The 2022 pulsar search discusses very low-mass companions and a captured planet in a triple system. A captured object has a different origin from one that formed around its present host, even if both are described as planetary-mass companions.

What a dusty disk does—and does not—show

Spitzer observations reported a dusty disk around the neutron star 4U 0142+61. NASA/JPL described the disk as containing about 10 Earth masses of dusty material and as a possible precursor to planets. That number is the estimated disk material, not the mass of a detected planet. A disk is evidence relevant to how planets might form; it is not itself a confirmed planet or proof that a planet later formed there.

NASA/JPL attributed this interpretation to Deepto Chakrabarty, principal investigator of the Spitzer research and an MIT researcher: “Pulsars emit a tremendous amount of high energy radiation, yet within this harsh environment we have a disk that looks a lot like those around young stars where planets are formed.” Aleksander Wolszczan, quoted by NASA/JPL, said: “I find it very exciting to see direct evidence that the debris around a pulsar is capable of forming itself into a disk.” Both statements concern a neutron-star debris disk, not a planet around a black hole.

The 4U 0142+61 disk and the PSR B1257+12 planets therefore answer different questions. The pulsar timing result supports the presence of planets in one system; the Spitzer observation supports the presence of dusty material that might be relevant to planet formation in another. Conflating the two would turn a possible precursor into a planet detection.

How could planets form around a black hole?

The black-hole formation proposal considered here concerns a supermassive black hole surrounded by an AGN’s circumnuclear disk. An AGN is an active, luminous accreting system: the proposed planet-forming setting is the surrounding disk, not the black hole’s event horizon. The 2019 model considers dust growth and gravitational instability in that disk, at distances on parsec scales from the central black hole.

The paper’s estimate of about 10 Earth masses describes a possible outcome of that theoretical model. It is not an observed planet mass, and it does not establish that every AGN disk forms planets. The result depends on the modeled conditions and processes. It is best read as evidence that a formation route can be explored theoretically, not as evidence that a black-hole planet has been detected.

This setting also differs from the familiar picture of a planet orbiting close to a compact object. The modeled planets would be associated with material at parsec-scale distances in a disk around a supermassive black hole. The result therefore does not imply that a planet is hugging the event horizon, nor does it demonstrate that a planet could remain intact in every region close to a black hole.

In other words, “around a black hole” in this model describes a planetary formation environment embedded in a larger accretion system. The black hole is central to the AGN, but the modeled formation takes place in the circumnuclear disk on much larger scales. The paper’s theoretical result makes a formation pathway conceivable; it does not supply an image, timing signal, or other confirmed observation of a planet there.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Planets around neutron stars Black-hole planets in the evidence discussed here
Evidence status Confirmed example: the system around pulsar PSR B1257+12. Theoretical formation proposal around supermassive black holes; no confirmation established by the sources discussed here.
Representative host A rapidly rotating neutron star, a compact stellar remnant. A supermassive black hole in an active galactic nucleus, surrounded by a circumnuclear disk in the model.
How the claim is supported Orbital motion inferred from variations in radio-pulse arrival times. Dust growth and planet formation modeled in an AGN disk; detection is discussed as difficult.
Formation picture Multiple proposals, including fallback material, companion disruption or evolution, survival, and capture; no single history is established for all systems. Dust growth and gravitational instability in a circumnuclear disk are modeled; this is not an observed formation history.
Quoted mass figure NASA/JPL reported about 10 Earth masses of dusty material in the disk around 4U 0142+61 in 2006; that is not a planet mass. The later pulsar review describes PSR B1257+12’s planets as approximately Earth-mass. About 10 Earth masses is a 2019 theoretical model outcome, not a measured planet.
Scale described The host is the neutron star; no comparable distance figure is stated in the sources discussed here. The modeled disk is at parsec scales from the central supermassive black hole, not at the event horizon.
Environmental concern Energetic radiation and relativistic pulsar winds can affect a planet’s atmosphere; consequences depend on uncertain details. The hypothetical setting includes an accretion-powered AGN; the cited model does not provide a confirmed planet-specific climate or surface condition.

The figures in the table are not interchangeable. The 10-Earth-mass estimate in the AGN model is a possible planet-forming outcome, while the similarly sized Spitzer figure refers to dusty material around 4U 0142+61. Neither gives the mass of a confirmed black-hole planet. The approximately Earth-mass description applies to the planets in the confirmed PSR B1257+12 system.

Why are black-hole planets harder to confirm?

The theoretical paper itself discusses detection difficulties and potential indirect signatures. A proposed formation process and a detectable planet are separate questions: even if planets can form in a disk, astronomers still need an observable signal that can be attributed to a planet rather than to the active galactic nucleus, its disk, or other sources of variability. The available sources do not provide a confirmed detection method or a verified black-hole planet candidate to compare directly with pulsar timing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pulsar timing offers a particularly precise clock, though interpreting the timing residuals requires care. In the modeled AGN environment, the central source is luminous and accreting, and the planet’s proposed location is in a circumnuclear disk. The paper explores possible indirect signatures, but the sources reviewed do not establish that a particular signature has yielded a confirmed planet. It would therefore be misleading to present a black-hole planet as an object already detected by a standard exoplanet technique.

The contrast is not that pulsar planets are easy to find in general or that every timing variation proves a planet. Rather, PSR B1257+12 supplies an established example supported by timing measurements, while the black-hole case remains a model of formation plus a discussion of how detection might be difficult.

Nor does a large search sample erase the evidence gap. The 2022 study’s roughly 800-pulsar archive sample concerns pulsar timing, not a survey of AGN disks for planets. A search of that kind cannot be used to infer a confirmed black-hole planet count. The sources discussed here provide no reliable current total of confirmed planets orbiting black holes, so giving a number would suggest a census that they do not supply.

Are planets around neutron stars habitable?

A confirmed orbit does not tell us that a planet is habitable. Pulsars emit energetic radiation and drive relativistic winds that can affect planetary atmospheres. The effects depend on the specific system and on uncertain details, so neither “all pulsar planets are habitable” nor “all are necessarily sterile” follows from the evidence. A habitability study describes a model-dependent habitable zone and emphasizes uncertainty about pulsar winds; it does not establish conditions on the surface of PSR B1257+12’s planets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the hypothetical AGN planets, the uncertainty is more basic: the cited formation study is not a confirmed planet observation with measured atmospheric or surface properties. Its accretion-powered environment is part of the model, but it does not supply a planet-specific climate. Calling such an object habitable or uninhabitable would go beyond what this evidence establishes.

These are not comparable habitability verdicts. For pulsar planets there are confirmed orbits but major uncertainty about local effects and individual atmospheres. For the AGN proposal there is not even a confirmed planet whose surface could be assessed. In both settings, extreme surroundings make simple labels tempting but unsupported.

How should candidate objects be described?

Careful wording matters because a low-mass companion is not automatically a planet with a known planetary formation history. The 2022 pulsar search discusses very low-mass companions and a captured planet in a triple system. Those cases should be described according to the evidence for their mass and origin rather than grouped indiscriminately with planets formed in a disk around their current host.

Likewise, an early reported claim of a planet around PSR 1829−10 is not the robust example to use for this comparison. The established reference point is PSR B1257+12, which remains the confirmed pulsar-planet system highlighted by the later systematic discussion. This avoids treating a superseded or uncertain claim as equivalent to the enduring evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For black-hole systems, the same discipline applies in the other direction: a theoretical formation result is not a candidate detection, and a hypothetical object should not be counted as a confirmed planet. Keep the claim tied to what is actually being discussed: a 2019 model of formation in an AGN disk around a supermassive black hole.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

  • Supported: Planets around a neutron star are confirmed, with PSR B1257+12 as the key example; their presence was inferred from pulsar timing.
  • Supported: Several formation routes have been proposed for neutron-star planets, and a dusty disk around 4U 0142+61 is relevant to formation scenarios.
  • Supported: A 2019 theoretical model explores planet formation in an AGN circumnuclear disk around a supermassive black hole, with a modeled outcome of about 10 Earth masses.
  • Not established by these sources: A confirmed planet orbiting a black hole, a reliable current total of such planets, or a planet-specific climate for the modeled AGN case.
  • Not established: One universal origin for neutron-star planets, or a verdict that all planets around neutron stars are habitable or sterile.

The evidence is therefore asymmetric: neutron-star planets are an observational result, while the black-hole example is a physically motivated but unconfirmed formation scenario. That is the most reliable basis for comparing them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have astronomers found planets orbiting black holes?

The evidence discussed here does not establish a confirmed black-hole planet. A 2019 theoretical model explores how planets might form in a disk around a supermassive black hole in an active galactic nucleus, but it is not a detection. This does not prove that no black-hole planet exists; the sources do not provide a reliable current census across black-hole masses.

How do astronomers detect planets around pulsars?

They measure changes in the arrival times of a pulsar’s radio pulses. The pulsar acts as a precise clock, and a planet’s gravity makes the pulsar move around the shared center of mass, shifting pulse arrival times. Astronomers must account for intrinsic timing noise and magnetospheric changes, which can imitate or hide an orbital signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the 10-Earth-mass figure mean a black-hole planet has been measured?

No. In the 2019 AGN model, about 10 Earth masses is a possible theoretical planet-forming outcome. A separate figure of about 10 Earth masses refers to dusty material in the disk around neutron star 4U 0142+61, not a detected planet. Neither is a measured black-hole planet.

Are planets around neutron stars all formed after a supernova?

That is one proposed pathway, through material that falls back into a disk after a supernova. Other proposals involve a companion being disrupted or altered, an object surviving earlier stellar evolution, or capture. The confirmed orbit of a planet does not by itself identify its formation history.

Could planets around neutron stars or black holes be habitable?

The evidence does not support a simple yes-or-no verdict. Pulsar radiation and relativistic winds can affect atmospheres, and habitability estimates are model-dependent. The black-hole case here is hypothetical and has no confirmed planet-specific climate or surface measurements.

The Bottom Line

Planets around neutron stars are confirmed, most clearly around pulsar PSR B1257+12, where astronomers inferred them from radio-pulse timing. The black-hole comparison is different: a 2019 model proposes planet formation in a disk around a supermassive black hole, but no confirmed black-hole planet is established by the evidence discussed here. The key distinction is observed system versus theoretical pathway, not a simple ranking of which environment is more extreme.
