Black hole jets reshape galaxy evolution mainly by regulating gas cooling. In massive galaxies and galaxy-cluster cores, jets from an active supermassive black hole heat and disturb surrounding gas, reducing the cold material available for widespread star formation. The same feedback can help feed the black hole and can coexist with young stars in localized filaments and knots.
This is a system-level effect, not a universal on/off switch. The strength and outcome depend on the host environment, the activity mode of the active galactic nucleus (AGN), the gas phase, and the distance from the jet.
What a black hole jet is
An AGN is a supermassive black hole at a galaxy’s center that is actively accreting surrounding matter. As gas spirals inward, it releases enormous energy. Some of the superheated material is expelled in narrow, fast outflows called relativistic jets. Powerful magnetic fields help collimate the outflows, allowing some jets to travel hundreds of thousands of light-years, according to NASA’s AGN explainer.

The central feedback cycle
In a massive galaxy or cluster core, gravity holds a large reservoir of very hot, diffuse gas. Without an energy source, that gas radiates energy, cools, condenses into clouds, and can eventually supply new stars. Some of the cooling material also loses angular momentum, reaches the central black hole, and increases the accretion rate.
Accretion powers jets. The jets inflate bubbles, drive shocks or sound waves, stir the atmosphere, and transfer heat and momentum to the surrounding gas. That input slows the rate at which the hot atmosphere can cool, reducing the supply of cold clouds. With less fuel arriving at the center, the black hole’s activity can decline. Cooling can then resume, creating a self-regulating cycle rather than a permanently fixed state.
A NASA Chandra analysis of more than 200 galaxy clusters described this precipitation-and-reheating picture and reported evidence that the regulation had operated for at least 7 billion years in the systems examined. That result supports a long-lived feedback process, not a claim that every galaxy follows an identical cycle.

How heating changes star formation
Slower cooling means less fuel
Stars form in cold, dense molecular clouds. Jet heating does not need to remove all gas from a galaxy to affect its evolution; preventing part of the hot reservoir from cooling can be enough to reduce the future supply of cold material. In a 2012 review, A.C. Fabian described systems in which a roughly continuous energy flow from radio-mode feedback reduces radiative cooling and subsequent star formation by about an order of magnitude. This is a review-level result for the systems discussed, not a universal reduction factor for every galaxy.
Gas can be displaced or mixed
Jet-inflated bubbles rise through the atmosphere and can lift cooler gas, while turbulence and waves mix energy through the halo. Shocks can heat gas abruptly; gentler sound waves can distribute energy over longer distances. These processes alter density, pressure, and cooling time even when the jet does not expel the gas completely.

If cooling becomes too weak, less material reaches the black hole and the jet power can fall. If cooling becomes stronger, more fuel can reach the center and reignite the jets. This negative feedback helps explain why some central cluster galaxies remain relatively quiescent for long periods instead of undergoing uninterrupted, rapid star formation.
Why jets do not simply switch star formation off
Large-scale suppression and local star formation can occur at the same time. NASA Hubble observations found ultraviolet-emitting knots and filaments associated with jets and with the edges of jet-inflated bubbles. Those structures contain young stars or star-forming gas even while the wider atmosphere is being regulated.
The local outcome depends on compression, uplift, cooling time, magnetic structure, and the geometry of the jet. A jet can compress a cloud or help draw cooler material into a filament, while its broader heating effect prevents the rest of the halo from condensing rapidly. Seeing young stars near a jet therefore does not prove that all jets trigger star formation, nor does it disprove net suppression across the galaxy.

Two AGN feedback modes
Astronomers often use a two-mode framework to connect jet behavior with a galaxy’s accretion state. The distinction is useful, but the Astro2020 white paper presents it as a common hypothesis rather than a rule that applies identically to every AGN.

|---|---|---|
| Typical accretion state | Lower accretion rates after a hot atmosphere is established | Higher accretion rates during a more luminous growth phase |
| Main outflow geometry | Narrow, collimated relativistic jets | Wider-angle winds and radiation-driven outflows |
| Common evolutionary role | Maintaining a hot halo and limiting renewed cooling | Potentially ejecting or shocking gas during an initial quenching phase |
| Best-known signatures | Radio lobes, X-ray cavities, bubbles, shocks, and sound waves | Broad absorption features, ionized outflows, and large-scale disturbed gas |
| Qualification | The modes can overlap or vary with environment; neither category is an absolute prescription for every galaxy. | |
Where the effect is strongest
Jet feedback is most clearly established in massive systems with substantial hot atmospheres. The relevant comparison is not simply “jet versus no jet,” but the combination of environment, gas state, spatial scale, and measurement.
| System or scale | What to examine | Likely evolutionary question |
|---|---|---|
| Central galaxy in a rich cluster | Hot intracluster gas, X-ray cavities, cooling time, radio lobes | Can repeated jets offset cooling and prevent a major cold-gas supply? |
| Massive isolated galaxy or group | Halo temperature, cold clouds, jet reach, gas kinematics | Does the jet regulate the halo or mainly affect gas near the nucleus? |
| Near-jet region | Shocks, compressed clouds, filaments, young stars | Is local cooling or star formation enhanced despite broader heating? |
| Wider halo | Density, temperature, pressure, turbulence, and cooling time | How far does deposited energy alter the future star-forming reservoir? |
In a small galaxy with little hot halo gas, a jet may have a different influence from one launched by a central brightest cluster galaxy. Results from cluster cores should therefore not be generalized to all galaxy masses, environments, or cosmic epochs.
What observations show
X-ray cavities: direct evidence of mechanical work
Radio jets often displace X-ray-bright plasma, leaving paired cavities or bubbles. Fabian’s review identifies these cavities as direct observational evidence for radio-mode feedback. Their sizes, pressures, and locations allow astronomers to estimate how much mechanical energy the jets have supplied and how that energy compares with the atmosphere’s radiative losses.
Radio structure: the outflow’s path
Radio lobes reveal where relativistic particles and magnetic fields have traveled. Their alignment with X-ray cavities links the radio activity to the work done on the hot atmosphere. The largest structures can extend far beyond the stellar body of the host galaxy, so the affected volume may be a substantial fraction of the halo.
Ultraviolet and optical filaments: the multiphase response
Hubble ultraviolet imaging, combined with other space- and ground-based observations, has identified young stars and cooler filaments around jets and bubble rims. These data show that feedback produces a multiphase atmosphere containing hot plasma, cooler clouds, ionized gas, and newly formed stars rather than a single uniform temperature.

Cluster samples: testing a population-level picture
The Chandra study of more than 200 clusters is important because it moves beyond a single spectacular object. Its precipitation-feedback interpretation connects the amount of cooling, the appearance of multiphase gas, and the likelihood of renewed jet activity. It remains an interpretation supported by the sample, not a statement that every cluster has the same duty cycle or efficiency.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The unresolved physics
The broad feedback picture is better established than the details of how energy is deposited. The Astro2020 white paper describes a scale-bridging problem: energy released close to the black hole must influence cooling regions approaching roughly 100 kiloparsecs across.
Several mechanisms may operate, with their relative importance changing from one system to another:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Shocks and sound waves: pressure disturbances can carry energy outward from expanding bubbles.
- Turbulence: chaotic motions can redistribute heat and alter how rapidly gas mixes.
- Sloshing and buoyancy waves: displaced gas can move through the potential well and spread energy beyond the immediate jet channel.
- Cosmic-ray heating: relativistic particles may transfer energy to thermal gas as they stream or diffuse.
- Bubble composition: the balance of thermal plasma, magnetic fields, and cosmic rays inside cavities affects how they rise and dissipate energy.
Researchers need spatially resolved measurements of density, temperature, pressure, velocity, and cosmic-ray heating, along with direct constraints on bubble contents. Until those measurements are available, it is safer to describe a family of interacting processes than to assign every observed cavity to one dominant mechanism.
How jet feedback changes a galaxy over time
It regulates the supply of stars
By controlling how much halo gas reaches the cold phase, jets influence the rate at which a galaxy can build its stellar population. The effect is cumulative: repeated episodes can keep a massive galaxy below the star-formation rate it would have reached if its hot atmosphere cooled unchecked.
It links black-hole growth to galaxy growth
The same gas reservoir can feed both stars and the black hole. When cooling supplies the nucleus, the resulting jets can reduce later cooling. This coupling helps explain why black-hole mass, central-galaxy properties, and halo gas conditions are studied together rather than as independent histories.
It rearranges gas instead of merely removing it
Uplifted filaments, cavity rims, and turbulent regions can move gas to new locations and phases. Some material may eventually fall back, cool farther out, or form stars in a filament. Consequently, “quenching” can mean lowering the overall rate of cold-gas production rather than evacuating every parcel of gas.
What the evidence does not justify
- Jets do not quench every galaxy. The strongest evidence concerns massive galaxies, especially central galaxies in groups and clusters with hot atmospheres.
- Jets are not the only source of feedback. Radiation, wide-angle winds, supernovae, and environmental processes can also affect gas.
- A nearby young star cluster does not demonstrate that a jet generally triggers star formation. It may be a local response inside a system whose net star formation is reduced.
- The order-of-magnitude reduction discussed by Fabian is not a universal constant; it summarizes the systems and assumptions covered by that review.
- The existence of X-ray bubbles establishes mechanical interaction, but not by itself the exact pathway through which all bubble energy becomes heat.
A practical way to interpret a claimed jet effect
- Identify the host: determine whether the object is an isolated massive galaxy, a group central, or a cluster-central galaxy.
- Separate scales: ask whether the observation concerns the immediate jet, a bubble rim, the stellar body, or the wider halo.
- Identify the gas phase: distinguish hot X-ray plasma from warm ionized filaments, cold molecular clouds, and stars.
- Check the activity mode: decide whether the evidence points to maintenance jets, quasar-like winds, or a transition between them.
- Match the claim to the measurement: use radio data for jet structure, X-rays for hot gas and cavities, and ultraviolet or optical data for young stars and cooler filaments.
- State the uncertainty: explain which energy-transfer mechanism is measured and which parts remain inferred.
Using these checks prevents a local image of a jet and a filament from being mistaken for a universal law of galaxy evolution.
