Newly hatched sea turtles do not follow a memorized route. On the beach, they orient toward the seaward horizon, using contrasts in brightness and beach features such as the slope and the dark outline of dunes or vegetation. Once they enter the water, different cues help guide their movement. Artificial beachfront lights can disrupt the beach cues and send hatchlings in the wrong direction.
How hatchlings find the sea on the beach
On a natural beach, the ocean-facing horizon is usually brighter than the landward side. Hatchlings tend to crawl away from the darker silhouette of land and toward that brighter horizon. Reflections from the moon and stars on the water can contribute to the contrast, but the explanation is not simply that they follow moonlight.
The beach itself also provides information. Its downward slope generally leads toward the water, while dunes and vegetation create dark shapes along the landward horizon. These visual and physical cues work together; their importance can vary with the beach and conditions.

A 2021 field study measured hatchling orientation at 87 nests on a naturally lighted beach in Canaveral National Seashore, Florida. Nests closer to the dune had a narrower angular range of hatchling orientation, and the findings supported the dark dune silhouette as an orientation cue. That result describes the study’s beach and conditions, not a rule that applies identically to every species or shoreline. USGS-hosted study summary

Why beachfront lights can send hatchlings off course
Artificial lights can overwhelm or alter the natural brightness contrast that helps hatchlings orient toward the sea. A hatchling drawn inland may face additional hazards and lose the direct route to the water. For this reason, U.S. federal guidance recommends turtle-friendly lighting practices near nesting beaches. What beachgoers can do
- Stay clear of nesting turtles and hatchlings; do not crowd, touch, or block them.
- Remove chairs, trash, and other obstacles from the beach, and fill in holes that could trap or impede hatchlings.
- Follow local turtle-friendly lighting guidance, including any rules about lights visible from the beach.
- If you see hatchlings moving away from the water or in immediate danger, contact the local wildlife or beach authority rather than handling them yourself.

Does instinct mean every hatchling reaches the ocean?
No. Hatchlings often emerge together, and their numbers can help overwhelm waiting predators, but the crossing is still dangerous and not every turtle survives.
