Autonomous inventory robots navigate grocery aisles by combining four functions: they localize themselves on a store map, plan a route to a shelf or waypoint, sense people and objects, and stop, wait or reroute when the planned path is unsafe. Safe deployment also depends on speed, turning space, stability, floor and fixture conditions, communications, and charging. These are separate capabilities, not one magic “obstacle-avoidance” feature.
The exact sensors and algorithms vary by manufacturer. Standards and certification can show how a system was evaluated, but they do not prove that every robot is safe in every store layout.
The four navigation capabilities behind safe aisle travel
ASTM F3470-20 treats several navigation tasks as distinct capabilities. That distinction is useful because a robot can be good at following a mapped route yet still lack the ability to recover when a shopper blocks it.
1. Localization: knowing where the robot is
Localization is the robot’s estimate of its position and orientation relative to a store map. A grocery robot may need to recognize an aisle, shelf run, intersection, or charging area, then continuously update its estimate as it moves. ASTM’s guidance also addresses updating a map when the environment changes.

In practice, the system must detect when its position confidence is poor. A responsible recovery may be stopping for assistance, returning to a known point, or rebuilding a map reference rather than continuing with an uncertain position. Ask vendors what the robot does after a shelf is moved, a promotional display appears, or localization confidence is lost; “autonomous” does not by itself answer those questions.
2. Goal and route planning
After determining its location, the robot selects a path to a shelf, scan point, or other waypoint. ASTM distinguishes pre-programmed goal navigation from selecting a route in situ. A mapped route may be efficient under normal conditions, while in-situ planning is needed when an aisle is closed, a pallet is being unloaded, or a crowd occupies the usual path.
Route planning should account for the robot’s physical envelope, turning radius, one-way restrictions, temporary obstructions, and the need to leave clearance for people. A route that is geometrically possible on a map may be unsafe when shopping carts, endcaps, or restocking equipment reduce the usable aisle width.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Sensing and response
Sensors provide observations of people, carts, shelves, pallets, fixtures, and other objects. The navigation software then decides whether to continue, reduce movement, stop, wait, or find another route. “Obstacle avoidance” is therefore a family of behaviors, not a single performance level.

4. Operating within defined limits
Safe movement also relies on operating conditions documented for the robot: floor surfaces, slopes, lighting, aisle width, fixture placement, congestion, communication availability, and charging arrangements. A deployment is safe only within the environment for which the manufacturer and integrator have assessed risk.
How a robot handles an obstruction
ASTM F3470-20 separates three useful levels of response:
- Stopping when blocked: the robot detects that its path is no longer passable and comes to a controlled stop.
- Going around a stationary obstacle: it selects a safe alternate path around a pallet, cart, display or other object that is not moving.
- Handling a moving obstacle: it responds to a shopper, employee or cart whose position is changing, which requires repeated sensing and a decision about timing and clearance.
A vendor’s broad claim of obstacle avoidance does not establish which of these cases are supported, how crowded the aisle may be, or what happens if no safe path exists. A useful operational question is: “Does the robot stop, wait, request help or reroute when it cannot maintain the specified clearance?”

People are not predictable obstacles
Shoppers can stop suddenly, reverse direction, reach into a shelf, or step out from an endcap. Employees may push a loaded cart or carry a box that changes their outline. A safe system must repeatedly reassess the scene instead of treating an initial gap as permanently available. The store’s procedures should give people a clear way to pass and should prohibit staff from forcing a robot through a narrowing space.

When waiting is safer than passing
In a narrow aisle, waiting can be the correct behavior even when an alternate path technically exists. The robot should not squeeze between a person and a fixture merely to maintain its schedule. Operators should define how long it may wait, how it signals that it is waiting, and when a human should intervene.
A concrete example: the published description of Tally
Simbe’s current Tally product page describes one commercial implementation. Simbe says Tally uses dozens of sensors, travels at less than one-third of human walking speed, can turn in place for tight aisles, disengages its motor when needed, and uses path planning and obstacle avoidance.
Those are vendor-published specifications for Tally, not universal specifications for grocery inventory robots. The statements do not establish a particular sensor modality, detection range, emergency-stop distance, safety-field dimension, or performance in every store. They illustrate the kinds of design choices that affect safety: low speed reduces kinetic energy and gives people more time to react; turning in place helps in constrained geometry; and motor disengagement can make a stopped robot easier to move or less likely to keep driving under a fault.
Physical and system design factors that affect safety
Speed and stopping behavior
Lower speed generally gives a navigation system more time to detect a person and gives a person more time to notice the robot. The relevant question is not only the nominal speed but also how quickly the robot can decelerate on the actual floor, whether it can stop on a slight slope, and what it does when sensing or computing is impaired. Published speed figures should be read with their attribution and operating conditions.

Footprint, clearance and turning
Measure the robot’s full width, including any scanner or protective structure, against the narrowest aisle and the clearance beside shelving. Turning in place may reduce the space required at an intersection, but it does not remove the need for a person to pass safely. Endcaps, freezer doors, queue rails and temporary displays should be included in the map and in a physical walk-through.
Stability and floor conditions
A tall payload, wet floor, threshold, damaged tile or ramp can change braking and stability. The deployment specification should state permitted floor conditions and slopes, how spills are handled, and whether the robot must leave an area when those conditions are outside limits. Stability is a system property; it cannot be inferred from route planning alone.
Charging and docking
A robot may spend unattended time at a charging dock, so electrical and fire hazards matter alongside navigation. The dock should be placed where it does not narrow an aisle or create a trip hazard, and staff should know how to isolate power and move the robot during an incident.

On March 11, 2026, UL Solutions announced that Simbe’s Tally and its charging dock had earned UL 3300 certification. The announcement says the evaluation covered fire and electric-shock hazards and safe autonomous mobility in dynamic environments where human behavior may be unpredictable. It also says OSHA had added UL 3300 to its list of safety certification standards recognized in meeting workplace safety regulations; verify the current official OSHA listing before relying on that status for a compliance decision.

- Document the operating environment. Record aisle widths, shelf heights, endcaps, ramps, thresholds, floor types, lighting, refrigeration areas, receiving routes and charging locations. Include the busiest periods and temporary layouts.
- Build and verify the map. Walk the robot through normal routes, then test moved shelves, promotional displays and closed aisles. Confirm how map updates are approved and how a localization failure is reported.
- Define obstacle behavior. Test a stationary cart, a moving cart, a person stepping into the path, a group blocking an aisle and an object that cannot be passed. Record whether the robot stops, waits, reroutes or requests help.
- Measure real clearances. Check the robot’s complete footprint and turning behavior at the narrowest points while doors, carts and shoppers occupy their normal positions. Do not rely solely on a digital map.
- Test degraded conditions. Follow the manufacturer’s procedures for communication loss, low battery, blocked docking, poor localization and sensor faults. Identify the safe state and who receives the alert.
- Train staff and communicate with shoppers. Employees need a standard method to pause, move or summon the robot without standing in its path. Signs or verbal guidance should explain that people have priority and where to report a problem.
- Review incidents and changes. Treat near misses, repeated waits, contact with fixtures and route failures as reasons to update the risk assessment. Reassess after remodeling, new displays, changed traffic patterns or software updates.
Questions to ask when comparing systems
| Area | Evidence to request |
|---|---|
| Localization | How position confidence is measured; what happens after a map change or lost localization; who can approve a map update. |
| Route planning | Whether routes are pre-programmed, selected in situ, or both; how closed aisles and blocked intersections are handled. |
| Obstacle response | Separate demonstrations or specifications for stationary objects, moving people and carts, and a completely blocked route. |
| Motion envelope | Overall width, turning behavior, speed limits, stopping behavior and required clearance on the actual floor. |
| Operating environment | Allowed floor conditions, slopes, lighting, congestion, fixtures and communication conditions, plus exclusions. |
| Fault and recovery | Behavior during sensor, software, communication, battery or docking faults; alerts, manual controls and safe recovery steps. |
| System evaluation | Applicable certification or test reports covering the robot, dock, electrical hazards and autonomous mobility, with model and configuration identified. |
Common failure modes and sensible mitigations
- Temporary displays are missing from the map: require a change-control process and a route test before opening a promotional area.
- Aisle width is adequate on paper but not in use: measure with carts, open freezer doors and normal shopper flow; mark areas that require waiting.
- The robot repeatedly waits behind one obstruction: investigate whether rerouting is enabled, whether the alternate path is mapped, and whether a staff escalation rule is needed.
- Localization degrades after remodeling: stop autonomous missions, update and validate the map, then release routes gradually.
- Charging creates a new hazard: relocate or guard the dock, maintain clear access, and document power-isolation and emergency procedures.
- People assume the robot will always yield or always pass: train staff that behavior depends on the defined operating conditions and that a stopped robot should be given space.
What is not established by the available evidence
There is no named, dated independent statistic here for grocery inventory-robot collision rates, near misses or comparative safety performance. A product-page operating total without a dated methodology should not be presented as an independent safety outcome. Nor is there a universal grocery-robot architecture, validated detection range, stopping distance or guarantee that collisions cannot occur.
The defensible conclusion is narrower and more useful: safe aisle navigation is a layered system. Localization, route planning, sensing, obstacle response, mechanical design, charging and deployment controls must work together inside a documented operating environment. Evaluate each layer separately, test it in the store’s real geometry and traffic, and treat standards or certification as evidence about scope—not as a substitute for site-specific risk assessment.
