Astronomers study black hole jets by combining observations across the electromagnetic spectrum. Radio images can map jets and enormous lobes; X-rays reveal hot gas and energetic activity; infrared and optical observations show how jets meet stars, dust and surrounding gas. The effects on a galaxy are inferred from the resulting shocks, brightened regions and changes in gas—not from a single image or a direct view of the black hole powering the jet.
What astronomers actually observe
In an ordinary telescope image of a jet, astronomers are not seeing the black hole itself launch the flow. They detect radiation produced by matter and particles near the black hole and along the jet, together with radiation from material the jet disturbs. A black hole is not a luminous surface that can be photographed like a star; the jet is an observable structure associated with its surroundings.
That distinction matters because the visible feature and its explanation are not the same thing. A bright radio knot, an X-ray region or a shock front is measured emission. Connecting it to a jet, working out the physical process that produced the light, and estimating what it does to the host galaxy require interpretation. Astronomers compare the position, shape and brightness of features in several wavelengths and use physical models to test explanations.
There is no universal “jet image” that answers every question. Different wavelengths reveal different processes and scales, and a feature prominent in one band may be faint or invisible in another. NASA’s multiwavelength account of M87, for example, combines infrared, radio, visible-light, X-ray and gamma-ray views rather than treating one image as complete.

How the main observing methods differ
| Observing band or method | What it can show | How it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Radio | Relativistic particles moving in magnetic fields, narrow jets and extended lobes | Maps jet structure over large distances; interferometry can resolve fine features close to the central source. |
| Optical | Visible starlight and some bright jet or interaction features | Places activity in the context of the host galaxy, but dust can obscure emission and some shocks do not show in visible light. |
| Infrared | Emission from dust and some shocks that are inconspicuous in visible images | Can reveal interaction features hidden or weak at optical wavelengths. |
| X-ray | Very hot gas and high-energy processes, including bright regions near some jet impact sites | Helps identify energetic structures and the hot environment around a black hole. |
| Gamma ray | Very high-energy emission from active regions | Adds information about energetic activity, but a detection alone may not pinpoint where in the jet the radiation originated. |
| Polarimetry | The preferred orientation of electromagnetic waves | Adds constraints on the processes producing the light; coordinated measurements across bands can distinguish competing explanations. |
Radio images: jets, lobes and fine detail
Radio emission can trace relativistic particles moving through magnetic fields. It reveals narrow jets as well as diffuse, extended lobes formed as energetic particles spread into their surroundings. These structures may reach far beyond the visible stars of the host galaxy. NASA’s general black-hole overview describes the radio-emitting lobes of Cygnus A as spanning half a million light-years from tip to tip; that is the scale of this particular example, not a typical size for every jet.
To resolve detail near a distant source, radio astronomers use interferometry. Signals gathered by separated radio telescopes are combined, providing an effective baseline much larger than any one dish. Greater separation can provide finer angular resolution, although the actual image also depends on the array, observing setup and target.
NASA’s 2011 account of the TANAMI observations of Centaurus A offers a specific illustration. Nine telescopes on four continents operated as an array with an effective baseline of about 10,000 kilometres. The resulting image covered the inner 4.16 light-years of the jet and counterjet and resolved features as small as 15 light-days. Those are reported values for that observation, not a resolution guarantee for radio interferometry generally.

Visible-light images help show a host galaxy’s stars and can capture bright jet features where conditions allow. But dust can hide emission near a galaxy’s nucleus, and a shock does not have to radiate strongly in visible light. Infrared observations are useful for revealing dust and certain interaction features that are hard to see optically.

In NASA’s 2019 M87 account, the shockwave produced where the jet meets surrounding gas radiates in infrared and radio, but not visible light. In the Spitzer infrared view, the shock is more prominent than the jet itself. This is a useful caution when comparing images: a missing optical feature does not establish that no jet-related activity is present.
X-rays: hot gas and energetic regions
X-rays are produced by very hot gas and other high-energy processes. They can reveal the environment around a black hole as well as bright structures associated with energetic particles and jet interactions. Comparing X-ray emission with radio structure is especially useful when astronomers want to locate where a jet meets material in its host.
In the galaxy 4C+29.30, about 850 million light-years away according to NASA’s 2013 account, Chandra X-ray data show hot gas near the black hole and bright regions around the outer jet impact sites. The locations of those X-ray features, considered alongside radio observations, help identify places where the jets encounter clumps of galactic material.
Polarization: clues to how the radiation is made
A brightness image shows how much light arrives from different parts of a source. Polarization adds information about the orientation of the waves, which can help distinguish physical mechanisms that could produce the observed radiation. It is not a decorative property of an image; it is a measurement that places additional constraints on the interpretation.

NASA’s 2025 report on BL Lacertae describes a coordinated seven-day observation in November 2023 using the IXPE X-ray observatory and ground-based optical and radio measurements. The X-ray polarization degree had an upper limit of 7.6%, while optical polarization reached 47.5%—a level NASA described as a record for this object over the preceding 30 years. The much lower X-ray polarization was interpreted by the team as evidence that electron-photon Compton scattering produces the X-rays in this case. The result tests an explanation for one source; it should not be generalized to every jet.
Gamma rays and coordinated timing
Gamma-ray observations extend the energy range astronomers can examine. They can establish that a source is producing very high-energy radiation, but they do not automatically identify the precise region responsible. In NASA’s 2011 Centaurus A report, Fermi had detected higher-energy radiation from the galaxy’s central region, while its origin remained uncertain in that account.
Timing matters as well as wavelength. If measurements in different bands are taken at different times, a changing source may not be in the same state in every image. Coordinated observations let researchers compare the bands more directly and look for linked changes. The BL Lacertae campaign is one example: X-ray polarization was evaluated alongside optical and radio polarization, making the contrast between the bands meaningful for the proposed emission model.

How astronomers infer effects on a galaxy
A jet carries energy outward and can encounter gas within or beyond its host galaxy. Astronomers look for a consistent set of interaction signatures: a radio jet aligned with bright regions in another band, hot spots near its apparent ends, shock fronts, and gas that is heated, compressed or displaced. The evidence is stronger when independent observations trace both the jet and the surrounding material in the expected locations.

These observations do not directly provide a universal measure of how much a jet changes a galaxy. Researchers infer energy transfer from the observed structures and their physical properties. The consequences for the supply of gas to a black hole, the galaxy’s future activity or the formation of stars depend on the particular system and on how its gas responds.
4C+29.30: impact sites and gas transport
In the 4C+29.30 case, NASA describes radio and X-ray bright spots near the ends of the jets as evidence that the jets are hitting clumps of material. The interpretation is that energy from the jets heats those clumps and can drag cooler gas along the jet. That interaction could affect the material available to fuel black-hole growth, but it is an inference about this system rather than a rule that applies identically to all galaxies.
The comparison between the radio and X-ray views is important: radio maps the jet-related structure, while X-rays reveal hot gas and bright impact regions. The two data sets help connect the location of the outflow to the affected material. Neither band alone supplies every part of that account.

M87: a shock that is clearer than the jet
M87 illustrates how the disturbance caused by a jet can be easier to see than the jet itself in a particular wavelength. NASA’s 2019 account describes jet particles colliding with interstellar gas and producing a shock that appears in infrared and radio, but not visible light. The receding jet is difficult to observe because of relativistic effects, yet its shock can still be detected. The observed emission therefore provides evidence of an interaction even where the underlying jet is not equally apparent.

Sagittarius A*: a case built from several clues
The Milky Way’s central black hole, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), shows why a proposed jet can be evaluated through multiple indirect signatures. A 2013 NASA release described a straight line of X-ray-emitting gas pointing away from Sgr A*, a radio shock front where a jet might strike gas, and a spectrum resembling those of jets in other galaxies. The release characterized the combined observations as the strongest case at that time for a jet from Sgr A*.
That interpretation was not equivalent to a complete image of a two-sided jet. The opposite jet was not seen in the reported observations; obscuration or a low fuel supply were offered as possible explanations. The claim should be understood as the interpretation of the evidence reported in that 2013 study, not as a timeless measurement that removes all uncertainty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the observations can—and cannot—establish
Multiwavelength astronomy is powerful because different instruments sample different parts of the same physical system. But assembling images does not eliminate ambiguity by itself. A radio lobe can show where energetic particles have spread; an X-ray bright spot can show hot material; infrared can expose a shock hidden at visible wavelengths; polarization can test an emission mechanism. The interpretation comes from how those measurements fit together, along with physical models.

- A detected high-energy signal may not locate its source precisely. The Centaurus A gamma-ray example illustrates that a detection can coexist with uncertainty about its origin.
- Interaction is not the same as a universal galaxy outcome. Jets can heat or move gas, but the net effect on star formation and fuel supply varies. NASA’s Centaurus A account notes that jets may alter star formation while describing their role in galaxy evolution as poorly understood.
- Historical figures belong to their specific observations. TANAMI’s resolution figures describe its Centaurus A image; the BL Lacertae polarization values describe a particular campaign. Neither should be treated as a general specification or typical value.
The useful answer to “How do astronomers take a picture of a black hole jet?” is therefore: they combine measurements, often from multiple observatories, that capture radiation from the jet and its surroundings. Radio, optical, infrared, X-ray, gamma-ray and polarization data answer different questions. To determine what the jet does to its galaxy, astronomers then trace where its energy appears to meet gas and distinguish measured features from the physical consequences inferred from them.
