Astronomers do not put a white dwarf on a scale or use one universal magnetic-field meter. They infer mass from several independent effects—orbital motion, pressure-broadened spectra, gravitational redshift, gravitational lensing, pulsations and, in accreting systems, hard X-rays. They detect magnetism mainly through Zeeman splitting and polarization in the star’s light.

Each technique measures a different physical signature and carries different assumptions. A binary orbit can provide a dynamical mass, while a spectrum or pulsation pattern must be compared with stellar models. A magnetic-field value from Zeeman splitting is a visible-disk average of the field strength; circular spectropolarimetry instead emphasizes the field component pointing toward or away from Earth. Keeping those distinctions attached to every result is essential.

What astronomers mean by a white dwarf’s “mass” and “magnetic field”

A white dwarf is too compact and faint to weigh directly. Its mass is inferred by measuring an observable effect that depends on mass, then solving for the mass with geometry, a mass–radius relation or an evolutionary model. The result is therefore a measurement plus a stated set of assumptions, not a direct reading from an instrument.

The same caution applies to magnetism. A real white dwarf can have a field that changes across its surface and with viewing angle. Spectral line splitting, the average field magnitude over the visible disk and the line-of-sight component obtained from circular polarization are not interchangeable quantities. A paper’s field value is meaningful only when its diagnostic and averaging convention are specified.

How mass is measured

1. Fitting the atmosphere spectrum

White-dwarf atmospheres are extraordinarily dense. In a hydrogen-dominated atmosphere, collisions and electric fields perturb the atoms, making absorption lines substantially broader than similar lines in lower-density stars. The detailed shape of those lines contains information about the atmospheric temperature and surface gravity.

Astronomers obtain a calibrated spectrum and fit the profiles with a grid of white-dwarf atmosphere models. The fit returns an effective temperature and a surface-gravity estimate. They then combine the gravity with a theoretical mass–radius relation or an evolutionary sequence to infer the mass. The calculation is model-based: the assumed atmospheric composition, temperature, treatment of pressure broadening and the chosen evolutionary models all affect the answer.

This method works for many apparently single white dwarfs because it does not require a visible companion. It is strongest when the spectrum has clean, well-resolved lines and when the star’s composition is understood. An unresolved companion, an incorrect atmospheric composition or inadequate treatment of dense-plasma line broadening can bias the inferred gravity and therefore the mass.

2. Measuring orbital motion in a binary

If a white dwarf has a companion, repeated observations can reveal the system’s orbit. Radial-velocity measurements track how each star moves toward and away from Earth; positional astrometry can trace motion on the sky. The orbital period, velocity amplitudes and, when available, the orbit’s inclination constrain the component masses through Keplerian dynamics.

The companion’s spectrum, brightness or independently estimated mass supplies additional constraints. Inclination is especially important: a nearly face-on orbit produces small radial velocities even when the true orbital speeds are high. A well-observed orbit with a measured inclination can therefore deliver a dynamical mass with fewer atmosphere-model assumptions than a single-star spectral fit.

The limitation is availability. The system must have a suitable companion, a sufficiently long and accurately sampled observing baseline, and enough information to separate the two stars’ motions. Ordinary binary-orbit measurements remain the standard route for many systems, but they cannot be applied to an isolated white dwarf.

3. Using gravitational redshift

Light escaping a white dwarf’s intense surface gravity loses energy. Its spectral lines arrive at a slightly longer wavelength than they would in a weak gravitational field. This gravitational redshift depends on the star’s compactness—its mass relative to its radius.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Astronomers measure the displacement of narrow spectral lines and subtract the star system’s ordinary motion, including Doppler motion from space velocity or a binary orbit. With a radius estimate or a mass–radius relation, the remaining gravitational shift constrains the mass. Precise wavelength calibration and careful kinematic corrections are essential because the gravitational signal can be confused with the star’s ordinary motion.

For Sirius B, a Hubble measurement yielded a mass equal to 98 percent of the Sun’s mass. That figure is specifically a gravitational-redshift result for Sirius B; it is not a universal white-dwarf mass. The method is attractive because it uses gravity directly, but it still needs a radius or an equivalent structural model to turn the shift into a mass.

4. Measuring gravitational microlensing

An isolated white dwarf can be weighed when it passes close to the line of sight to a more distant background star. The foreground object’s gravity bends the background star’s light and shifts the star’s apparent position. By measuring that tiny astrometric displacement at several epochs and fitting the lensing geometry, astronomers determine the foreground white dwarf’s mass.

Microlensing does not require a companion orbit or a detectable atmosphere line. It is consequently one of the few ways to obtain a relatively direct mass for an isolated white dwarf. The alignment must be unusually close, however, and the positional shift is small. Space-based or very high-precision astrometry, accurate distances and a time series covering the lensing event are needed.

Two published examples illustrate the scale of the measurement: Stein 2051B was found to have about 68 percent of the Sun’s mass, while LAWD 37 was measured at about 56 percent. Kailash Sahu of the Space Telescope Science Institute described the technique as “a very independent and direct way to determine the mass of a star.” Those values belong to the individual microlensing events and should not be read as a population average.

5. Reading the star’s pulsations

Some white dwarfs naturally vary in brightness. Their non-radial g-mode pulsations have periods set by the density and chemical layering inside the star. Astronomers obtain a long, high-cadence light curve, identify a set of stable periods and compare the observed pattern with pulsation calculations.

Matching several modes can constrain the total mass and the thickness of internal layers, including the transition between chemical compositions. Detailed asteroseismic studies can also provide information about rotation and, in some cases, magnetic effects. The method applies only to pulsating white dwarfs, and mode identification is not always unique. The inferred mass depends on which modes are assigned to which theoretical radial order and on the interior models used.

6. Modelling hard X-rays from accretion columns

In a magnetic cataclysmic variable, gas captured from a companion is channelled toward the white dwarf’s magnetic poles. The infalling material forms a hot accretion column that emits hard X-rays. The high-energy spectrum depends on the shock temperature and the column’s structure, both of which are linked to the white dwarf’s gravitational potential.

Researchers fit accretion-column models to the measured X-ray continuum and line emission. A NuSTAR Legacy Survey used spectra in the 20–78 keV band and reported a weighted mean mass of 0.77 ± 0.02 solar masses for its combined sample of magnetic cataclysmic variables. The value is a property of that surveyed accreting population, reported in a 2020 NASA Technical Reports Server record; it is not the mean mass of all white dwarfs.

Mass methods compared

Method Primary data What constrains mass Main requirements or caveats
Atmosphere fitting Pressure-broadened absorption lines Surface gravity combined with a mass–radius or evolutionary model Depends on temperature, composition and dense-atmosphere modelling
Binary dynamics Positions and/or radial velocities over an orbit Keplerian motion, inclination and companion constraints Requires a suitable companion and a well-sampled orbit
Gravitational redshift Wavelength displacement of spectral lines Compactness, with a radius or structural relation Must remove ordinary Doppler motion; needs precise spectroscopy
Microlensing Astrometric shift of a background star Lensing geometry and deflection angle Requires a rare close alignment and extremely precise astrometry
Asteroseismology Non-radial g-mode periods Interior pulsation models Only pulsators qualify; mode identification and interior physics matter
Accretion-column X-rays Hard X-ray spectrum, such as 20–78 keV Shock and accretion-column model linked to gravitational potential Applies to accreting magnetic systems; results are sample-specific

How magnetic fields are detected

Zeeman splitting in ordinary spectra

A magnetic field changes atomic energy levels. An absorption line that would be single in a non-magnetic atmosphere can split into multiple components or shift in wavelength. The separation and pattern of the components provide a field-strength estimate.

In a normal intensity spectrum, the result is generally an average field modulus over the visible hemisphere. Strong fields can produce obvious, widely separated structures. Weaker fields may be hidden by pressure broadening, thermal broadening or insufficient spectral resolution. There is no single field-strength threshold that applies to every white dwarf: detectability changes with atmospheric conditions, wavelength coverage, resolving power and signal-to-noise ratio.

For the white dwarf GD 90, resolved hydrogen Zeeman structure corresponded to 5 ± 0.5 megagauss. The numerical uncertainty belongs to that observation and diagnostic; it should not be treated as a universal precision for Zeeman measurements.

Circular spectropolarimetry

Spectropolarimetry measures polarization as a function of wavelength rather than recording intensity alone. Circular polarization across a Zeeman-split line is sensitive to the magnetic-field component along the line of sight, averaged over the visible disk. Repeated observations at different rotational phases can reveal changes as different magnetic regions rotate into view.

Polarimetry can detect fields that do not produce visibly resolved splitting in an intensity spectrum. Its sensitivity still depends on the instrument, wavelength range, exposure time and the star’s brightness. A longitudinal-field value from circular polarization is not the same quantity as the mean field modulus inferred from line separation.

Broad-band circular polarimetry for featureless spectra

Some cool white dwarfs have optical spectra with few usable absorption lines. In those cases, broad-band circular polarimetry can reveal a magnetic signature in the continuum even when line-by-line Zeeman analysis is impractical. The measurement is an integrated, disk-averaged signal and must be interpreted with models of the field geometry and the atmosphere.

How an observing team combines the evidence

A robust result usually follows a sequence that keeps instrumental effects and model assumptions visible:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Characterize the target. Establish whether the white dwarf is isolated, part of a binary, pulsating or accreting, and determine whether its spectrum contains usable lines.
  2. Collect the appropriate time series. Obtain repeated radial velocities or positions for a binary, multi-epoch astrometry for a lensing event, a long photometric run for pulsations, or calibrated X-ray spectra for an accreting system.
  3. Calibrate the data. Correct wavelength or positional measurements for instrument drift, determine the system’s ordinary velocity when measuring redshift, and quantify noise and resolution before fitting a field.
  4. Fit physical models. Use atmosphere and mass–radius models for line profiles, orbital models for binaries, lensing geometry for astrometry, pulsation models for g modes and accretion-column models for hard X-rays.
  5. Report the measured quantity precisely. State whether the mass is dynamical, model-dependent or sample-specific, and whether a magnetic result is a field modulus, a longitudinal component or a broad-band polarization signal.
  6. Check for consistency. Where possible, compare independent constraints—for example, a spectral mass with a binary orbit or a redshift measurement. Disagreement can indicate an unresolved companion, an incorrect atmospheric composition, an unsuitable field geometry or an inadequate evolutionary model.

Common interpretation mistakes

  • Calling every mass “direct.” Microlensing and orbital dynamics use gravity or motion most directly, but atmosphere fits, pulsations and X-ray spectra still require models.
  • Mixing sample averages with individual stars. The 0.77 ± 0.02 solar-mass NuSTAR result describes the combined magnetic-cataclysmic-variable sample surveyed, not the white-dwarf population as a whole.
  • Confusing redshift with velocity. A line displacement contains both gravitational and ordinary kinematic contributions; the latter must be removed.
  • Treating a field modulus as a vector component. Zeeman splitting and circular polarization average different aspects of a potentially non-uniform field.
  • Assuming unresolved splitting means no magnetism. Pressure broadening and limited resolution can hide weak Zeeman structure; polarization may still provide a detection.
  • Ignoring geometry. Binary inclination, lensing alignment, pulsation-mode identification and the orientation of a magnetic field all affect the inferred result.

Which technique is suitable in which situation?

Observational situation Most useful first option Why
White dwarf with a measurable companion orbit Binary dynamics Orbital motion supplies a dynamical constraint when inclination and companion information are available.
Apparently single star with clear hydrogen lines Atmosphere fitting, possibly combined with redshift The line profiles provide surface gravity; redshift adds an independent gravity-sensitive check.
Isolated star passing close to a background source Astrometric microlensing The lensing deflection yields a mass without a companion.
Star with stable brightness variations Asteroseismology Multiple g-mode periods probe mass and internal chemical layering.
Magnetic accretor bright in hard X-rays Accretion-column spectral modelling The shock spectrum encodes the white dwarf’s gravitational potential.
Strongly magnetic star with resolved line components Zeeman splitting Component separation gives a visible-disk mean field modulus.
Weakly magnetic or line-poor cool star Circular spectropolarimetry or broad-band polarimetry Polarization can reveal a line-of-sight field component when splitting is unresolved or lines are absent.

The central principle is to match the observable to the star’s circumstances. Mass measurements become more secure when independent methods agree, while magnetic measurements become more informative when the reported diagnostic, field geometry and observing sensitivity are stated together.
