Astronomers do not photograph a black hole itself. They identify the compact object from its effects: hot gas can shine as it falls inward, nearby stars and gas can orbit an unseen mass, and merging black holes can produce gravitational waves. Dust and crowded clusters change which of these signals is measurable, so astronomers combine infrared, radio, X-ray, optical, and gravitational-wave observations rather than relying on one universal technique.

What “finding a black hole” actually means

A black hole’s event horizon emits no ordinary light that a telescope can image. The evidence comes from its surroundings or from the spacetime disturbance created by its motion. NASA summarizes the main lines of evidence as light from accreting matter, the movement of stars or gas, and gravitational waves from violent events. Each measures a different consequence of the black hole’s gravity or environment, not the horizon itself. NASA’s black-hole overview explains how these observations fit together.

Accretion light

Gas, dust, or a disrupted star can form a rapidly rotating accretion disk as it falls toward a black hole. Friction and compression heat that material, producing electromagnetic radiation. The light comes from the infalling matter and nearby plasma; it is not emitted by the black hole. If the supply of material is small, a black hole may be extremely faint or effectively invisible at electromagnetic wavelengths.

Gravitational influence

An unseen compact mass changes the paths and speeds of nearby stars. Measuring those motions over time allows astronomers to calculate the mass concentrated in a region. If the inferred mass is large, compact, and lacks a plausible ordinary stellar explanation, a black hole is the leading interpretation. In more distant galaxies, individual stars may blur together, so spectroscopy measures gas velocities from wavelength shifts instead.

Gravitational waves

When two black holes spiral together, their changing gravitational field can create ripples in spacetime. Ground-based gravitational-wave observatories detect the characteristic waveform and infer the participants’ masses, spins, and distance. This method can reveal otherwise dark mergers that produce little or no visible, infrared, or X-ray light.

Why dust and crowded clusters require different evidence

Interstellar dust absorbs and scatters visible light. A line of sight that is opaque in visible wavelengths can still carry longer-wavelength infrared or radio emission. Infrared observations can therefore trace warm dust and activity around a buried source, while radio measurements can follow penetrating emission and motion near obscured regions. The result is not that infrared or radio passes through every dust cloud: the amount, geometry, and composition of the material still determine what can be seen.

High-energy X-rays provide another route. Thick gas and dust absorb lower-energy X-rays more readily, but harder X-rays can penetrate or scatter through heavily obscured material. NASA’s NuSTAR studies use this property to search for feeding supermassive black holes that are difficult to identify at lower energies. NASA’s NuSTAR report and NASA’s Chandra account describe why multiple X-ray energies and other wavelengths are needed.

Dense star clusters pose a different problem. Thousands or millions of stars can overlap in a small area, and a dormant black hole may produce no accretion glow. The practical strategy is to resolve individual stars, measure their positions and velocities repeatedly, and search for an unseen mass that perturbs one star or a group of stars.

How the main detection methods compare

Method What is measured Main limitation Helpful observations
Accretion emission Radiation from hot gas and plasma near the black hole Fails or weakens when the black hole is not feeding; dust can hide the source Optical, ultraviolet, infrared, radio, and X-ray telescopes
Stellar orbits Positions, speeds, and accelerations of nearby stars Stars must be resolved and tracked precisely; distance and crowding make this difficult High-resolution imaging, astrometry, and spectroscopy
Gas spectroscopy Velocity of gas inferred from Doppler-shifted spectral lines Gas may be disturbed by other processes, and the emitting region may be unresolved Optical, infrared, and radio spectroscopy
Hard X-rays High-energy emission that penetrates or scatters through obscuring material Very thick or complex material can still suppress or reprocess the signal NuSTAR, Chandra, and coordinated multiwavelength data
Gravitational waves Spacetime ripples from compact-object mergers Requires a merger in the detector’s sensitivity range; it does not provide a conventional image Ground-based gravitational-wave detectors and follow-up telescopes

These approaches are complementary. A bright accretion source may reveal a black hole without a measurable stellar orbit, while a quiet black hole in a cluster may be established almost entirely through dynamics. NASA’s Webb explainer outlines how astronomers select the method that matches the target.

Following stars and gas to weigh an unseen object

Resolve and track individual stars

For a nearby crowded region, astronomers take high-resolution images over many years. They identify the same stars in successive observations, measure each star’s position, and combine that astrometry with radial velocities from spectroscopy. The resulting orbit reveals the gravitational potential. A tight orbit around an object that gives off little light is especially persuasive because it constrains a large mass into a small volume.

At the Milky Way’s center, visible light is blocked by intervening dust, so infrared and radio observations are essential for tracking stars near the central massive object. The long time baseline matters: an apparent alignment in one image is not an orbit, and a single velocity measurement cannot establish a compact unseen mass. The observing campaign must distinguish orbital acceleration from measurement error and unrelated stellar motion. ESO describes the wavelength challenge around Sagittarius A* in its account of the quest for Sagittarius A*.

Use spectroscopy when stars blur together

In a more distant galaxy, the telescope may record the combined light of many stars or a bright gas disk rather than separate stellar points. Spectrographs split that light into wavelengths. Motion toward or away from the observer shifts spectral lines through the Doppler effect; mapping those shifts across the galaxy provides a velocity field. A rapidly rotating, centrally concentrated field can indicate a massive compact object, although astronomers must model the gas distribution, inclination, and other sources of motion.

Using infrared and radio observations through dusty regions

Infrared telescopes detect thermal emission from warm dust and longer-wavelength radiation that is less affected by some dust columns than visible light. They can reveal a buried nucleus, trace a dusty torus around an active galactic center, and monitor stars orbiting in an obscured central region. Radio interferometers can add angular resolution and measure jets, masers, or other signatures associated with accretion.

Infrared is not a magic transparent window. Cold, dense, or geometrically thick dust can remain difficult even at infrared wavelengths, and unrelated star formation can produce similar infrared emission. Astronomers compare the spectrum, variability, spatial structure, and radio or X-ray behavior before attributing a source to a black hole. The Webb explainer at NASA details why wavelength selection depends on the sightline and the source.

Hard X-rays reveal buried accretion

Active supermassive black holes can be hidden inside gas-rich galactic nuclei. Lower-energy X-rays and visible light may be absorbed, but higher-energy X-rays can pass through or scatter from portions of the obscuring material. NuSTAR is designed to measure these hard X-rays. A hard-X-ray detection by itself is not always definitive, because compact stellar remnants and other energetic sources can contribute; astronomers use spectra, variability, imaging, and observations at infrared, optical, radio, or softer X-ray energies to identify the source.

A 2025 NASA/JPL report combined ten years of NuSTAR data with measurements from other missions, including IRAS, and concluded that at least 35 percent of feeding supermassive black holes may be hidden. That percentage applies to the studied population of actively feeding supermassive black holes; it is not an estimate for all black holes, including quiet stellar-mass objects. The published account is available at NASA/JPL.

A dense-cluster example: the candidate in NGC 1850

In 2021, the European Southern Observatory reported a stellar-mass black-hole candidate in NGC 1850, a dense cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud approximately 160,000 light-years away. Instead of detecting light from the black hole, the team measured how an unseen object altered the motion of a nearby star.

Observations with ESO’s Very Large Telescope were combined with data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment and the Hubble Space Telescope. The reported object was estimated at roughly 11 times the Sun’s mass. That number describes this specific reported object, not the mass of black holes in clusters generally. The key evidence was the star’s gravitational response, not a photograph or an emission spectrum from the black hole itself.

“Similar to Sherlock Holmes tracking down a criminal gang from their missteps, we are looking at every single star in this cluster with a magnifying glass in one hand trying to find some evidence for the presence of black holes but without seeing them directly,” said Sara Saracino of Liverpool John Moores University’s Astrophysics Research Institute.

The example shows why repeated precision measurements matter in a crowded field. A candidate must survive checks for an ordinary binary companion, stellar blends, calibration errors, and other explanations for the observed motion. ESO’s report gives the observational context at ESO.

How astronomers combine observations in practice

  1. Identify a suspicious signal. A variable infrared nucleus, hard-X-ray source, unusually fast gas, or star with unexplained acceleration becomes a candidate.
  2. Measure the relevant motion or spectrum. Imaging supplies positions and brightness; spectroscopy supplies velocities and chemical or physical clues; X-ray instruments characterize energy and variability.
  3. Model the mass and geometry. Researchers fit orbital tracks, gas-rotation fields, accretion spectra, or X-ray absorption while accounting for distance, inclination, dust, and neighboring sources.
  4. Test alternatives. A dense star cluster, supernova remnant, star-formation region, or ordinary binary can mimic parts of the signal. Independent wavelengths and time-separated observations help reject those explanations.
  5. Seek independent confirmation. A dynamical mass plus accretion emission is stronger than either alone. A gravitational-wave event may receive electromagnetic follow-up, when a counterpart is expected, to add context.

This workflow explains why observatories are used together. Infrared may locate activity, hard X-rays may penetrate the obscuration, and spectroscopy may establish the mass through motion. No single detector solves every dust, distance, or crowding problem.

What can prevent a confident identification?

  • No active accretion: A black hole that is not consuming nearby material may emit almost no detectable light.
  • Extreme obscuration: Even hard X-rays can be attenuated or reprocessed by sufficiently thick, complex material.
  • Unresolved sources: At large distances, blended stars and gas make it difficult to assign a velocity to one object.
  • Short observing baselines: Orbital acceleration may require years of measurements; one snapshot cannot establish a trajectory.
  • Confusion in clusters: Overlapping stellar images and crowding can create false motions or hide a genuine companion.
  • Model dependence: The inferred mass depends on assumptions about distance, orbital geometry, gas structure, and the contribution of ordinary stars.

For these reasons, astronomers describe some objects as candidates until additional observations narrow the uncertainty. A claim that a black hole was “seen” generally means that its effects were measured with enough consistency to rule out competing explanations, not that the event horizon was resolved.

Can an ordinary telescope find one of these hidden black holes?

The specific cases above require professional observatories, sensitive detectors, long time baselines, and coordinated analysis. A consumer telescope may show bright stars or a galaxy, but it cannot by itself measure the tiny accelerations, hard-X-ray spectrum, infrared source structure, or gravitational waveform used to establish these hidden objects. Citizen observers can contribute useful brightness monitoring in some projects, yet the black-hole identification comes from calibrated, often multi-instrument datasets.

The essential takeaway

Dust determines which light can reach us, while dense clusters make individual sources overlap. Astronomers respond by changing the measurement: infrared and radio trace obscured regions, hard X-rays probe buried accretion, precision imaging and spectroscopy weigh unseen objects through stellar or gas motion, and gravitational-wave detectors catch mergers that may be electromagnetically dark. The strongest conclusions come when independent methods agree on the same compact mass and behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does infrared light pass through all dust around a black hole?

No. Infrared is often less affected than visible light and can reveal warm dust or obscured activity, but very thick or complex material can still absorb, scatter, or reprocess it.

Was the NGC 1850 black hole detected from its own light?

No. ESO’s 2021 report inferred a roughly 11-solar-mass object from the way its gravity changed the motion of a nearby star.

What does the 35 percent hidden-black-hole figure mean?

NASA/JPL reported that at least 35 percent of feeding supermassive black holes may be hidden, based on ten years of NuSTAR data combined with other missions. It does not describe every black hole.
