Astronomers detect antimatter indirectly, by measuring the tracks and energy of its particles or the radiation released when it annihilates with ordinary matter. A magnetic spectrometer such as the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) determines whether a cosmic-ray track curves like a positively or negatively charged particle, then combines that result with several particle-identification measurements. Gamma-ray instruments use a different route: positron–electron annihilation produces a characteristic 511-keV signal. These methods establish that positrons exist and reveal how many arrive at particular energies; they do not, by themselves, identify the source of the high-energy positron excess or prove dark matter.
What astronomers mean by detecting antimatter
Antimatter is not detected as a glowing substance or photographed as a separate kind of star. It is identified through measurable differences between antiparticles and ordinary particles. A positron, the antimatter counterpart of an electron, has the same mass as an electron but the opposite electric charge. That opposite charge changes how it moves through a magnetic field.
Space-based detectors look for two kinds of evidence:

The direction of curvature gives the sign of its charge, while the track and other detector signals provide momentum, energy and particle type.
- Annihilation evidence: when a positron meets an electron, their annihilation produces gamma rays. A line or peak near 511 kiloelectronvolts (keV), the electron rest-energy scale, can reveal that positrons were present.
The first method follows particles that reach the detector. The second measures radiation produced when particles encounter matter. Keeping those methods separate is essential: a gamma-ray detector does not determine a positron’s magnetic curvature, and a magnetic spectrometer does not need an annihilation flash to identify every positron.

How a magnetic spectrometer identifies a positron
AMS-02, mounted on the International Space Station, illustrates the charged-particle method. Its permanent magnet and silicon tracker measure a particle’s path as it passes through the instrument. A positively charged track bends one way and a negatively charged track bends the other way. The amount of bending, combined with the measured path, gives the particle’s rigidity (momentum divided by charge).
A curved path alone is not enough. Cosmic rays contain enormous numbers of protons, along with electrons, heavier nuclei and other particles. Because protons can produce detector signals that resemble those of electrons or positrons, AMS-02 combines independent measurements before accepting a candidate.
The identification chain
- Track the incoming particle. Silicon tracker layers record successive points along its flight path. Fitting those points determines the direction and curvature in the magnetic field.
- Determine charge sign and momentum. The curvature sign distinguishes a positive particle from a negative one. Curvature magnitude and the track geometry provide momentum information.
- Measure flight timing. The time-of-flight system records when the particle crosses detector layers. Timing helps establish direction and separates some particle classes.
- Check electromagnetic behavior. The electromagnetic calorimeter measures how the particle deposits energy. Electrons and positrons create electromagnetic showers with characteristic shapes and energy deposition.
- Use transition radiation and Cherenkov measurements. AMS-02’s transition-radiation detector and ring-imaging Cherenkov detector add information about the particle’s speed and species, strengthening separation of light leptons from heavier backgrounds.
- Reject background events. Analyses apply quality and consistency requirements across the subsystems. Only events whose signals agree with a positively charged electron-like particle contribute to the positron sample.
The result is a statistically selected population, not a photograph of an antimatter particle. Each accepted event is supported by several detector responses, and the analysis estimates how many background particles could have entered the sample.
How scientists tell a positron from an electron
Electrons and positrons have the same mass and, at a given energy, can produce very similar showers in a calorimeter. Their charge sign is therefore decisive. The tracker sees the sign of curvature in the magnet: a positron bends opposite to an electron. The calorimeter, time-of-flight system, transition-radiation detector and Cherenkov detector then test whether the track behaves like a lepton rather than a proton or another charged particle.

Analysts also account for the detector’s finite resolution. At high momentum, curvature becomes slight, so a small tracking error can make a positive event appear negative or vice versa. Track-quality cuts, alignment calibration and independent particle-identification measurements reduce that charge-confusion background. Published fluxes and positron fractions are corrected for detection efficiency and acceptance rather than obtained by simply counting every curved line.
What AMS-02 has measured
NASA’s current AMS-02 overview says the instrument has identified 9 million electron or positron events; NASA’s page was accessed in 2026 and does not assign that figure a publication year. It is a summary of electron-or-positron events, not a count of all cosmic rays detected by the mission.
A separate NASA announcement from 2013 described an earlier dataset of about 25 billion recorded events, including 400,000 positrons between 0.5 and 350 GeV. Those numbers belong to the historical first antimatter-excess result and should not be presented as AMS-02’s current cumulative total.

| Figure | What it represents | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 9 million | Electron or positron events identified by AMS-02 | NASA overview figure, page accessed 2026; publication year not stated |
| About 25 billion | Recorded events in the dataset used for NASA’s 2013 announcement | Historical sample, not a current mission total |
| 400,000 positrons | Positrons from 0.5–350 GeV in that 2013 analysis | Subset of the historical 2013 dataset |
With energy assigned to each accepted event, researchers can calculate a positron flux (how many arrive per area, time and energy interval) and a positron fraction (the proportion of positrons among positrons plus electrons). Those spectra show whether the measured population follows the amount expected from ordinary cosmic-ray collisions.

How annihilation gamma rays reveal positrons
The second major strategy is to detect what happens after a positron encounters an electron. Their rest energies are converted into gamma-ray energy. Under conditions relevant to many low-energy annihilations, the signal includes photons at 511 keV, the energy corresponding to the rest mass of an electron or positron.
A gamma-ray detector measures photon energy, arrival time and direction rather than the original particle’s curved path. A concentration of events at 511 keV is therefore an annihilation signature. It is strong evidence that positrons met electrons somewhere along the signal’s path, but the line is not automatically proof of one particular astronomical object. Instrument response, background radiation and the environment where annihilation occurred must also be modeled.
Fermi’s terrestrial gamma-ray-flash example
NASA’s Fermi mission provides a clear demonstration of space-based antimatter detection without requiring positrons to have traveled from another galaxy. Powerful terrestrial gamma-ray flashes generated above thunderstorms can create electron–positron beams. Some positrons escape the atmosphere along Earth’s magnetic-field lines and travel toward a spacecraft.
- A thunderstorm produces a terrestrial gamma-ray flash and an associated beam containing positrons.
- Earth’s magnetic field guides part of the beam away from the atmosphere.
- Positrons reach the spacecraft and encounter ordinary electrons in spacecraft material.
- Annihilation produces gamma rays, including the 511-keV rest-energy signature.
- Fermi’s Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) records a brief spike at that energy.
NASA describes the GBM as detecting the antimatter beam through “a brief spike of gamma rays at that specific energy.” In this case the antimatter was produced in Earth’s atmosphere and detected near Earth. The observation demonstrates indirect detection through annihilation radiation; it is not a measurement of positrons arriving from interstellar space.

What the high-energy positron excess means
AMS-02, together with earlier measurements by PAMELA and Fermi, found that the positron fraction rises at high energies compared with the simplest expectation from ordinary cosmic-ray interactions. In plain terms, more high-energy positrons are observed than conventional secondary-production models predict.
The excess is an observation, not a source identification. Several explanations remain possible:
- Nearby pulsars or pulsar wind nebulae: rapidly rotating neutron stars can accelerate particles and inject electron–positron pairs into surrounding space. Their proximity could help high-energy positrons reach Earth before losing too much energy.
- Dark-matter annihilation or decay: hypothetical dark-matter processes could produce positrons. This interpretation is constrained by other cosmic-ray and gamma-ray observations and is not established by the positron excess alone.
- More complex cosmic-ray propagation: changes in diffusion, energy losses or the distribution of ordinary sources can alter the predicted background and the size of an apparent excess.
Distinguishing these possibilities requires more than a rising positron fraction. Researchers compare the energy spectrum with predictions, study directional information where available, look for accompanying antiprotons or gamma rays, and test whether a proposed source population can supply the required particles without violating other observations. The evidence summarized here supports an unresolved astrophysical question, not a claim that dark matter has been discovered.

Protons dominate the cosmic-ray background
Cosmic rays are mostly protons and atomic nuclei. Even a small rate of proton misidentification could overwhelm a much smaller positron signal. That is why AMS-02 requires agreement among tracking, timing, calorimetry, transition radiation and Cherenkov measurements.

Energy and charge measurements have different errors
At increasing momentum, a particle’s path bends less, making the charge sign harder to resolve. Calorimeter energy measurements and tracker momentum measurements also have different resolutions and systematic uncertainties. Analyses propagate those uncertainties into the reported flux and fraction rather than treating every reconstructed value as exact.
Secondary production can mimic a new source
Ordinary cosmic rays colliding with interstellar gas create secondary positrons. A credible excess must therefore be measured relative to a propagation model, and the uncertainty in that baseline matters. A deviation from one model does not automatically prove an exotic source.
A 511-keV line is not a complete address label
The line identifies an annihilation process, but photons can be produced in different environments. To associate a signal with a particular object, astronomers need timing, direction, morphology, spectral context and an understanding of backgrounds. The Fermi thunderstorm event is especially instructive because the production region is terrestrial even though the detector is in space.

A reliable result follows a sequence that separates instrument behavior from astrophysical interpretation:
- Calibrate the detector. Known particle signals and control samples establish tracker alignment, energy response, timing and efficiency.
- Reconstruct events. Software turns sensor hits into tracks, energies, arrival directions and subsystem responses.
- Select candidates. Quality requirements remove tracks that do not cross the instrument cleanly or whose signals disagree.
- Estimate contamination. Proton leakage, charge confusion and other backgrounds are measured or modeled.
- Correct for exposure. The accepted count is converted to a flux using the detector’s geometric acceptance, live time and efficiency.
- Compare with physical models. The spectrum or fraction is tested against secondary-production predictions and candidate source models.
- Separate observation from interpretation. The paper can state that an excess or annihilation feature was measured without claiming that its ultimate source is known.
This workflow explains why astronomers can be confident that positrons are present while remaining cautious about where the highest-energy ones originate.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- A positron is identified as a positively charged, electron-like particle, primarily through the curvature of its track in a magnetic field and corroborating detector signals.
- AMS-02 uses a permanent magnet, silicon tracker, transition-radiation detector, time-of-flight system, ring-imaging Cherenkov detector and electromagnetic calorimeter to reject backgrounds and measure positron spectra.
- Annihilation with an electron can produce a 511-keV gamma-ray signature. Fermi’s GBM detected that signature from positrons produced by a terrestrial gamma-ray flash.
- The observed high-energy positron excess is real in the measurements described by NASA and related experiments, but pulsars, propagation effects and dark-matter scenarios remain competing explanations.
