In a 2015 laboratory demonstration, DNA-coated particles rolled across a surface by binding to RNA and using an enzyme to remove it. The system moved at micrometres-per-minute speeds and also demonstrated a proof-of-concept way to detect a single-nucleotide mutation. It was a research device, not a commercial nanorobot or a clinical test.

How the DNA roller moves

The motor combines a spherical particle coated with DNA, a surface bearing complementary RNA, and the enzyme RNase H. DNA on the particle binds to RNA on the surface, forming DNA–RNA hybrids. RNase H selectively hydrolyses the RNA in those hybrids. As bound RNA is removed, the particle can make new contacts farther along the surface and continue rolling.

This is rolling, not the step-by-step walking used by earlier DNA motors. The enzyme-driven removal of RNA makes the surface interaction part of the motor’s movement cycle; the demonstration does not describe a self-contained robot navigating freely through the body or environment. Yehl and colleagues’ paper was published online on 30 November 2015 and appeared in the February 2016 issue of Nature Nanotechnology.

How fast it moved in the experiment

The author manuscript reports average velocities of 1.8 ± 0.4 μm/min for 0.5 μm particles and 1.9 ± 0.5 μm/min for 5 μm particles, with maximum velocities up to 5 μm/min. These are measurements from the specific experimental system, not general performance specifications for DNA motors. The full-text manuscript provides the detailed velocity figures.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The authors also said the roller’s maximum speed and processivity were three orders of magnitude greater than the maximum for conventional DNA motors. That comparison refers to the motor classes and results discussed in their paper; it should not be read as a universal comparison with every molecular motor.

How its path differed from earlier DNA walkers

The particle’s shape affected how it traveled. Spherical motors followed a self-avoiding path, while anisotropic particles—including dimerized and rod-shaped configurations—could move linearly without a track or an external force, as reported by the authors. These behaviors describe configurations tested in the study, not a general steering capability of DNA nanomachines.

The distinction from walkers is useful: a walker advances through discrete steps, whereas this system rolls as its DNA–RNA contacts are formed and removed. Its reported speed and processivity therefore belong to this particular rolling design and experimental setup, rather than establishing that all rolling molecular machines outperform all walkers.

What the mutation-sensing demonstration established

The study demonstrated proof-of-concept detection of a single-nucleotide polymorphism by measuring particle displacement with a smartphone camera. In other words, the researchers showed that a difference at one nucleotide could be linked to a measurable change in particle movement in their experimental setup.

That result is not evidence of a validated clinical diagnostic, patient testing, or consumer availability. The paper presents sensing as a possible application and reports a laboratory demonstration; it does not establish clinical accuracy or commercialization. A contemporary overview appeared in Chemistry World’s 9 December 2015 report.

What to take away

  • The motor rolls: DNA-coated particles bind complementary surface RNA, and RNase H removes the RNA to enable continued motion.
  • In the reported system, average speeds were about 1.8–1.9 μm/min, with maxima up to 5 μm/min.
  • Shape influenced path behavior, and the paper reported a smartphone-camera mutation-sensing proof of concept.
  • The findings are a laboratory demonstration, not a ready-to-use nanorobot or medical test.
