Digital marketing helps an e-commerce business attract relevant visitors, explain its products, support purchase decisions, and learn from customer behavior. It is important because an online store needs ways to be discovered and evaluated before a visitor can become a customer—not because marketing alone guarantees sales.

How digital marketing supports an online store

Marketing can contribute at several points in the customer journey. A person first needs to discover a store or product, then understand whether it fits their needs, and finally decide whether to buy. Digital channels and content can help businesses communicate at each stage; the right mix depends on the audience and business, and no single channel is established as best for every store.

Discovery and interest

Digital marketing can help potential customers encounter a business and develop interest in its offer. Google describes acquisition in digital analytics as the stage of building awareness and acquiring user interest. In the EU, 32.6% of enterprises used paid internet advertising in 2024, according to Eurostat’s 2025 report. That figure shows adoption, not that advertising is profitable or effective for every advertiser.

Product evaluation and engagement

After discovery, useful product information and ongoing engagement can help shoppers assess an offer. What a business communicates, and where it communicates it, should reflect its customers and products. The available evidence does not rank channels by performance, so a universal recommendation would be misleading.

Purchase and continued learning

Marketing activity can be evaluated alongside customer actions, including transactions. That makes it possible to ask whether people are reaching the store, interacting with it, and completing purchases—and to identify where further investigation may be useful.

Why e-commerce makes marketing especially relevant

Online sales are an established part of business activity, though the figures below describe the EU rather than the world. Eurostat reports that 24% of EU businesses conducted e-sales in 2025, referring to the previous calendar year, and that e-sales accounted for 19% of EU business turnover in 2024. The same 2026 Eurostat publication says 21% of EU businesses used websites or apps for web sales in 2025.

These statistics describe business activity and sales, not the effect of marketing campaigns. They help explain the setting in which digital marketing operates, but they do not show that marketing caused a particular share of e-commerce turnover.

How an e-commerce business can measure digital marketing

A practical way to organize measurement is to look at acquisition, behavior, and conversion. Google Analytics Help explains these stages and says analytics can help businesses understand what online behavior led to purchases and make informed decisions about reaching new and existing customers.

Acquisition: are people arriving?

Review whether the channels and campaigns you are evaluating bring visitors and generate interest. A visit or click is evidence of activity, not by itself evidence of a sale or a profitable campaign.

Behavior: what do visitors do?

Examine how visitors interact with the store. This can help frame questions about the customer journey, such as where people engage or stop. The data describes observed behavior; it does not, on its own, explain why someone acted that way.

Conversion: do visits lead to transactions?

Look at whether visitors become customers and transact. Google says e-commerce measurement can help businesses understand customer preferences and how well marketing works. Its GA4 e-commerce documentation notes that a developer needs to set up e-commerce events for this measurement.

Interpret campaign results carefully. A campaign that receives clicks or is associated with purchases is not automatically the reason those purchases occurred. The cited guidance describes measurement approaches; it does not provide a controlled estimate of digital marketing’s causal effect on sales.

Choosing channels without assuming one is best

Because audience and business context matter, compare possible channels against the same practical questions rather than relying on a universal ranking:

  • Audience fit: Does the channel reach people the store intends to serve?
  • Intent: Does it meet people while they are exploring, evaluating, or ready to buy?
  • Cost: What resources does it take to run and maintain the activity?
  • Measurability: Can the business connect the activity to relevant customer behavior and transactions?
  • Time to learn: How long will it take to gather useful evidence about the approach?
  • Repeat engagement: Can it help the business communicate with customers again where appropriate?

Use the answers to decide what to test and measure in the context of the business. Eurostat reports that, among EU enterprises paying for internet advertising, 76.8% used information from webpage content views or search keywords, a practice it describes as contextual advertising. This is a share of advertising enterprises, not a performance result or a recommendation for every store.

What marketing cannot guarantee

Marketing can bring people to an online store and help them evaluate its offer, but it cannot ensure that interest becomes an order. Product quality, price, site usability, delivery, customer service, and competition can also affect a shopper’s decision. The cited sources do not quantify the effect of these factors, so they should be considered as business context rather than measured findings from the statistics above.

Definitions of e-commerce also evolve. The OECD’s 2025 guidance updates how e-commerce is measured, including digital intermediaries, subscriptions, AI-assisted transactions, and emerging ordering channels. It provides definitional context, not evidence that a particular marketing channel drives growth.
