A diesel-electric attack submarine moves underwater with an electric motor powered by batteries. Its diesel engines drive generators, but those generators need atmospheric oxygen, so the boat must surface or raise a snorkel to run them and recharge. Air-independent propulsion (AIP) adds another way to make or supply energy while submerged, using systems such as fuel cells or Stirling engines. It extends a submarine’s time underwater, but it does not create unlimited endurance: stored fuel, oxidizer, hydrogen, battery capacity, speed and mission demands still impose limits.
The most reliable way to interpret an endurance claim is to identify the submarine class, AIP technology, operating speed, energy stores and test status. Saab describes conventional diesel-electric boats as remaining submerged for “a few days” before surfacing or snorkelling, while Navantia says its S-80 AIP is intended to support “weeks rather than days” at low speed. Those are manufacturer descriptions for different designs, not universal specifications.
How does a diesel-electric submarine work?
In a conventional diesel-electric design, three systems form the basic propulsion chain: a diesel-powered electrical generator, a large battery bank and an electric motor connected to the propeller. The Center for Strategic and International Studies describes this arrangement as the standard architecture for non-nuclear submarines. The diesel engine does not normally turn the propeller directly during submerged running; it supplies electrical power that is stored in batteries or delivered through the boat’s electrical system.
The three core components

The same CSIS overview notes that AIP can be combined with advanced lithium-ion batteries. AIP is therefore an additional energy source in many designs, not proof that the submarine has abandoned batteries or diesel generators.

The propulsion cycle
- Charge: When the boat is surfaced or operating at snorkel depth, its diesel generator runs on atmospheric air and charges the battery bank while supplying onboard electrical loads.
- Submerge: The crew shuts down the diesel generator and closes the air and exhaust path. The submarine becomes a sealed electric vehicle.
- Propel: Batteries feed the electric motor, which turns the propeller. Navigation, pumps, sensors, lighting and other hotel loads draw from the same finite energy budget.
- Restore energy: When the battery state of charge or mission plan requires it, the submarine must return to the surface or raise a snorkel, unless an AIP system can supply enough underwater power to delay that step.
This cycle explains why diesel-electric submarines can be very quiet while submerged: the diesel machinery can be shut down and propulsion can come from stored electrical energy. It also explains the fundamental endurance limit: without another underwater energy source, every submerged hour consumes energy that must eventually be replaced using air-breathing generators.
Why do submarines need to snorkel?
A diesel engine needs oxygen for combustion. A submerged conventional submarine cannot simply open an intake to the sea, so it raises a mast called a snorkel (or snort) near the surface. The snorkel admits air to the diesel engine and carries exhaust gases out. The boat can remain below the surface while doing this, but the mast and its emissions bring practical and tactical disadvantages: the submarine is closer to the surface, its sensors and communications posture may be constrained, and the diesel machinery produces detectable acoustic and thermal activity.
Snorkelling is therefore a compromise rather than a second form of fully independent underwater operation. The boat avoids exposing its entire hull, yet it still depends on the atmosphere and must manage mast depth, sea state, exhaust handling and battery charging. Saab’s manufacturer description states: “Diesel-electric submarines can remain submerged for a few days before they are required to surface (or break the surface using a snorkel).” The phrase is useful for understanding the conventional constraint, but Saab does not present it as a specification for every class.

A submarine travelling slowly and minimizing nonessential loads can conserve energy; a boat manoeuvring at high power cannot expect the same interval. No single snorkel schedule applies to all diesel-electric attack submarines.
What is air-independent propulsion (AIP)?
Air-independent propulsion is an underwater energy system that can operate without drawing atmospheric air while the submarine is submerged. The term describes the relationship with the atmosphere, not an unlimited energy supply. An AIP boat still carries finite fuel, oxidizer or reactants, and its output must be matched to propulsion and hotel-load demand.

The U.S. Office of Naval Research lists fuel-cell electrochemical conversion among the technologies pursued for undersea power. Saab identifies Stirling AIP as another submarine option. In both cases, the aim is to generate useful energy without starting an air-breathing diesel generator. The resulting power can support propulsion directly through the electrical system, preserve battery charge, or provide a combination of both, depending on the class architecture.
AIP does not automatically mean a submarine can travel at its highest possible speed indefinitely. A system sized for efficient low-speed patrol may provide much less power than the electric motor can draw during rapid manoeuvring. Endurance claims must therefore state the operating mode and power level.

Fuel-cell AIP
A fuel cell converts chemical energy into electricity through an electrochemical reaction rather than combustion. Submarine fuel-cell designs differ substantially in how they obtain and store the reactants; there is no single fuel-cell architecture.
- Onboard hydrogen generation: India’s Ministry of Defence reported on 9 March 2021 that the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory had completed user-specific land-prototype tests of a fuel-cell AIP system in endurance and maximum-power modes. The release says the design generates hydrogen onboard. That milestone documents prototype testing on land, not a completed submarine installation or a fleet endurance measurement. - Diesel reforming: Naval Group describes a separate concept that reforms diesel fuel to extract hydrogen for a fuel cell. This approach can use a familiar liquid fuel, but the reformer and associated processing equipment become part of the AIP plant. - Bioethanol and liquid oxygen: Navantia describes the S-80 system as using bioethanol and stored liquid oxygen to produce hydrogen for a fuel cell. In its 2026 release on S-83, the company says the first loading of those reactants was used to begin producing hydrogen for the fuel cell. Fuel cells can be attractive because they generate electricity without the same mechanical combustion cycle as a diesel engine, but the practical result depends on the complete installation: reactant storage, reforming or hydrogen-generation equipment, cooling, controls, exhaust or by-product management, maintenance and integration with batteries. The available sources do not provide matched measurements for noise, cost, reliability or output across these designs.
Stirling-engine AIP
A Stirling engine is a closed-cycle heat engine. Instead of taking combustion air continuously from the atmosphere, it uses an externally supplied heat source and a sealed working fluid to produce mechanical power, which can then drive a generator. Saab identifies Stirling AIP as a submarine technology, while the ONR describes advanced undersea power research more broadly.

The broad distinction is useful: a fuel cell makes electricity electrochemically, whereas a Stirling installation converts heat into mechanical work and normally uses a generator to make electricity. The supplied sources do not support a rigorous ranking of Stirling and fuel-cell systems by stealth, speed, price, range or reliability. Those characteristics depend on a named class, its installation and its operating procedures.

Batteries remain part of the system
AIP and batteries solve different parts of the energy problem. Batteries provide high bursts of electrical power and store energy gathered from the diesel generators or AIP plant. AIP can supply a comparatively steady underwater load and reduce how often the boat must snorkel, while the battery handles changes in speed and demand. Whether a particular submarine uses that division of labour, and at what power levels, is class-specific; the key point is that AIP is complementary to battery-electric propulsion in the conventional architecture.
How long can an AIP submarine stay underwater?
There is no universal AIP endurance number. A meaningful duration requires at least the submarine class, AIP type, stored fuel and oxidizer or hydrogen, battery state, speed, hotel-load configuration, sea conditions and mission profile. A low-speed patrol and a high-power evasion manoeuvre consume energy at very different rates.

These phrases must not be merged into a single conversion such as “AIP equals a fixed number of weeks.” The sources do not provide independently measured, like-for-like tests under common conditions. Treat “few days,” “weeks rather than days” and “several folds” as attributed descriptions, not engineering constants.
What determines the actual duration?
- Available energy: Battery capacity, AIP reactants and diesel fuel set the total energy budget.
- Power demand: Propulsion at higher speed generally consumes energy faster than low-speed loitering; pumps, sensors and other hotel loads continue even when the propeller demand is modest.
- Conversion efficiency: The losses in generators, reformers, fuel cells, Stirling engines, motors and power electronics affect how much stored chemical energy becomes useful electrical output.
- Operating mode: An AIP plant may be intended primarily for low-speed endurance, while batteries cover short periods of high demand.
- Mission decisions: The commander may reserve battery energy for acceleration, detection response or emergency manoeuvre rather than use every available kilowatt-hour for routine travel.
- Test status: A land prototype, a dockside installation, a submarine trial and an operational patrol are different milestones and cannot be treated as interchangeable.
How AIP, batteries and diesel generators work together
A useful conceptual operating sequence has three modes. During a charging period, the diesel generator runs with atmospheric air and replenishes batteries. During a quiet submerged period, the diesel is shut down and the electric motor draws from the batteries. If the boat has AIP, that plant can operate underwater and supply electrical power without opening the snorkel, either supporting the motor directly or slowing battery depletion.

At low speed, the AIP output may cover propulsion and essential hotel loads for an extended period. If the crew needs a rapid manoeuvre, the battery bank can provide a larger short-term power surge. Once the batteries and AIP reactants are depleted, the submarine still needs to snorkel or surface to restore its energy stores. This is why “air-independent” should be read as “independent of atmospheric air for the duration of the available AIP supply,” not as “independent of refuelling.”
Actual electrical layouts vary. Some boats place AIP in a separate module, some integrate it with the main power bus, and some add newer battery technologies alongside the original diesel-electric plant. Without a class-specific diagram or operating manual, it is not safe to infer exact power-sharing rules from the presence of an AIP label alone.

Navantia S-80 and S-83
Navantia’s 2026 press release reports that testing of the AIP system on submarine S-83 began after earlier installation work. The company says the first loading of liquid oxygen and bioethanol was used to produce hydrogen for the fuel cell. It also states that S-80 boats equipped with AIP are intended to operate submerged for weeks rather than days, specifically describing the endurance benefit at low speed.
The date and wording matter. The release documents the start of testing; it does not establish from the cited material that the full test series was complete or that an independent organization had verified an operational endurance result. The “weeks” statement remains a Navantia capability claim for the S-80 system.

In February 2023, India’s Ministry of Defence announced that DRDO’s fuel-cell AIP would “soon be fitted” aboard INS Kalvari. The announcement names DRDO, the Indian Navy, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and Naval Group in the integration effort. It records a plan and the participating organizations at that date; it should not be rewritten as proof that installation was completed without a newer, specific confirmation.

The earlier March 2021 DRDO release concerns user-specific land-prototype tests, including endurance and maximum-power modes. Keeping those milestones separate prevents a common error: treating a successful prototype test, an announced integration and an operational patrol as the same event.
How to evaluate an AIP endurance claim
When a brochure, news report or specification sheet gives an underwater duration, use this checklist before comparing it with another submarine:
- Identify the class and variant. AIP fitted to one boat does not establish the performance of every boat in a family.
- Name the conversion system. Record whether the claim concerns a fuel cell, Stirling engine, another AIP method or batteries alone.
- List the reactants and stores. Note diesel, bioethanol, liquid oxygen, stored hydrogen or another supply, and whether the source describes onboard processing.
- Find the operating condition. Look for speed, propulsion load, hotel-load assumptions, patrol mode or a phrase such as Navantia’s low-speed qualification.
- Check the source type and date. A manufacturer release, government announcement, prototype report and independent trial carry different evidentiary weight.
- Separate measured results from intent. “Testing began,” “will be fitted,” “designed to provide” and “demonstrated” describe different levels of proof.
- Reject false precision. If the source says “a few days,” “weeks rather than days” or “several folds,” do not invent hours, nautical miles or a percentage.
Common misconceptions
- “Diesel-electric means the diesel engine always drives the propeller.” In the basic submerged cycle, the diesel generator charges batteries and the electric motor turns the propeller.
- “A snorkel makes the submarine air-independent.” A snorkel still draws atmospheric air and vents diesel exhaust; it only lets the boat remain mostly below the surface while doing so.
- “Every AIP submarine uses hydrogen tanks.” DRDO describes onboard hydrogen generation, Naval Group describes diesel reforming, and Navantia describes bioethanol plus liquid oxygen. These are distinct arrangements.
- “AIP replaces the batteries.” AIP can coexist with batteries and the conventional diesel-electric plant; battery-electric propulsion remains central to the architecture described by CSIS.
- “Weeks underwater means unlimited patrol endurance.” AIP reactants, fuel, battery energy, maintenance limits and operating power remain finite.
- “A prototype test proves operational endurance.” Land-based tests, installation milestones and submarine trials answer different questions and must be labelled separately.
What the evidence supports—and where it stops
The consistent engineering picture is straightforward: batteries and an electric motor enable quiet submerged propulsion; diesel generators restore energy only when air is available; AIP supplies an additional underwater energy path. Fuel cells and Stirling engines represent different conversion methods, and fuel-cell systems can use different reactant architectures.

The evidence does not support a universal number for AIP endurance, a general ranking of fuel cells against Stirling engines, or a blanket tactical verdict comparing AIP boats with nuclear submarines. Those conclusions require class-specific technical data and controlled measurements that are not provided by the cited descriptions. For a practical answer, always attach an endurance statement to its submarine, system, operating mode, publisher and date.
