Roman aqueducts generally did not carry water uphill. Their channels followed carefully surveyed routes and sloped gently downhill from a higher source. Where a route crossed a valley, engineers could keep the channel high on a bridge or use a sealed pressure conduit that descended into the valley and rose on the far side. That upward section worked because the source water was higher—not because the system lifted water above its starting level.
How did Roman aqueducts get water to go uphill?
Usually, they did not. An aqueduct was a complete water-supply system, and its channel normally relied on gravity: water flowed along a shallow downward gradient from its source toward its destination. The route might wind around high ground rather than climb it. Engineers could also tunnel through an obstruction, carry the channel across a valley on an arcade, or use a pressure conduit for a deep valley crossing. Penn Museum and Archaeology Magazine describe the surveying and route choices involved.
How could water rise on the far side of a valley?
In an open channel, gravity moves water down the channel’s slight grade. A sealed pipe changes how the water crosses a valley: the pipe runs down one side, through the low point, and up the other side. The descending water column creates pressure that pushes water up the far slope.
This arrangement is called an inverted siphon or pressure conduit. Its receiving reservoir must remain lower than the water surface at the source. Water can rise locally along the far side, but the conduit does not lift it above its starting level or supply energy for a net uphill journey. Penn Museum describes the pipe run as a U-tube arrangement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What routes could Roman engineers choose?
The best option depended on the terrain and the particular installation. A bridge or arcade kept the channel at elevation across a valley; a pressure conduit let water descend into a valley and climb partway out again; a longer route could follow the contours; and a tunnel could pass through an obstruction. These options differ in whether water stays in an open channel or enters a sealed pipe, but the available sources do not establish reliable general cost or pressure-limit comparisons.
What do Pompeii and Lyon show?
The Western Australian Museum describes Pompeii’s water supply as traveling 40 kilometres from the hills. It also gives a 35-metre height difference between the castellum—the distribution reservoir—and the lowest point in the city. Those figures illustrate that system; they are not averages for Roman aqueducts. Western Australian Museum

A 2020 scholarly review reports that the siphon of the Lyon aqueduct used lead pipes with a combined length of 16.6 kilometres. That is a figure for the Lyon system, not a standard length for Roman pressure conduits. Groundwater review (2020)
Was a pump or Archimedes screw how aqueducts climbed hills?
Water-raising devices existed in Roman hydraulic technology, but their existence does not mean pumps or Archimedes screws routinely lifted the main flow of long-distance aqueducts over hills. The usual aqueduct route depended on gravity, with bridges, tunnels, contour-following routes, or pressure conduits used to manage terrain. Museo Galileo
