Early Māori society began with deliberate East Polynesian voyages to Aotearoa in the mid-to-late 13th century. A 2022 synthesis of 2,254 radiocarbon ages from 712 archaeological sites places initial settlement in the North Island at AD 1250–1275 and in the South Island at AD 1280–1295. The people who arrived—best described for this period as the ancestors of Māori or early Māori—then reshaped their economy, settlements and social institutions in response to New Zealand’s unfamiliar temperate environments.
The revised settlement timeline
The broadest current archaeological synthesis places East Polynesian arrivals between AD 1250 and 1300. Bunbury and Petchey’s 2022 modeled chronology narrows that range for the first sustained settlement evidence, while still treating the results as calibrated ranges rather than exact landing dates.

Archives New Zealand summarizes the arrival evidence as indicating that Polynesian people first reached New Zealand around 1250 to 1300 CE from East Polynesia. The newer ranges refine that statement; they do not identify one universally proven day or voyage as the beginning of Māori history.

Radiocarbon dating is powerful but not self-interpreting. Marine foods can carry an apparent age because carbon in the ocean circulates differently from atmospheric carbon. Archaeologists must also account for “old charcoal,” in which wood burned long after the tree grew, and for differences among shell, bone and eggshell samples.

A Scientific Reports study built a temporal marine-reservoir model from paired dates in 52 archaeological contexts. That work showed why earlier chronologies could produce broad or apparently conflicting arrival windows. It also highlighted a crucial distinction: the date of an initial landfall is not automatically the date when settlement became sustained and widespread.
Bunbury and Petchey’s 2022 synthesis applied corrections across 2,254 previously published radiocarbon ages from 712 sites. The resulting model resolves a North–South timing difference large enough to measure, while retaining uncertainty about the exact first landfalls. Archaeological, oral and environmental evidence do not all record the same event in the same way, so the ranges should be read as the best-supported current estimates, not as a replacement for that complexity.

How the first communities adapted to Aotearoa
A temperate environment required new strategies
East Polynesian voyagers arrived with knowledge developed in warmer island environments, but Aotearoa offered colder seasons, different soils and unfamiliar plants and animals. The archaeological sequence indicates rapid adaptation rather than a static version of an already complete Polynesian way of life.

Seasonal harvesting helped people follow resources that were abundant at different times and in different places. Horticulture was especially important in warmer regions, where crops could be grown more reliably. In cooler areas, the balance among gardening, wild foods and hunting differed.

Moa hunting was important, but temporary
Moa hunting appears in the modeled record around AD 1300–1320, soon after the first settlement windows. The birds represented a substantial new food opportunity, and their remains show that hunting became a major early subsistence strategy. The model places its end around AD 1400–1415. That short interval matters: it demonstrates how quickly an introduced human presence could alter an ecosystem and how quickly communities had to adjust when a resource was depleted or became harder to obtain.
Settlement was not fixed from the beginning
The population record changes markedly between about AD 1350 and 1450. University of Waikato’s summary of the chronology study describes population growth and a shift toward northern areas during this period. Climate variability and the availability of food and suitable growing conditions formed part of that demographic story. Movement between regions therefore reflected both environmental opportunity and changing social networks, rather than a single permanent settlement pattern established at first arrival.

From kin groups to iwi and hapū
Early Māori social organization was based on kinship and descent from common ancestors. That principle provided a framework for cooperation, leadership, residence and access to resources, but it should not be projected backward as though today’s iwi and hapū structure appeared fully formed on the day of first landfall.

Regional identities were therefore historical developments: they grew as populations settled particular landscapes, negotiated access to food and gardens, maintained alliances and competed over resources.

The result was not one uniform Māori society. Shared ancestry and cultural foundations connected communities, while local histories produced distinct authority structures, customs, speech forms and relationships with neighboring groups. Social development continued as people responded to demographic change, ecological limits and exchange opportunities.
Exchange connected regions
Seasonal food gathering and horticulture tied communities to particular places, but extensive trade networks moved resources across the country. Exchange allowed materials and foods from one ecological zone to circulate into another, reducing the limits imposed by local climate. It also created repeated contact among communities that were not politically unified.
These networks help explain how regional difference and wider connection could coexist. An iwi or hapū could maintain its own authority and traditions while participating in exchanges that linked distant parts of Aotearoa. Trade was therefore an economic practice and a way of sustaining relationships across changing settlement landscapes.
What the new chronology changes—and what it does not
- It supports settlement beginning in the mid-to-late 13th century, with the North Island modeled earlier than the South Island.
- It places the rise of moa hunting about a generation or two after the earliest settlement windows and its end by the early-to-mid 15th century.
- It identifies major population and settlement change between about AD 1350 and 1450, including growth toward northern areas.
- It shows that social institutions developed over centuries from kin-based communities rather than arriving as an unchanged hierarchy.
- It does not provide a reliable single population total for the earliest centuries or prove one exact first-landing date.
The clearest interpretation is a sequence: deliberate ocean voyaging, settlement in different parts of Aotearoa, rapid ecological experimentation, demographic movement and the gradual consolidation of regional iwi and hapū. The calibrated dates make that sequence more precise without making it simple.
