Detection dogs are giving conservationists a new way to search for the Victorian grassland earless dragon, a critically endangered lizard that is extremely difficult to see. Dogs trained by Zoos Victoria can recognize the smell of the dragon’s scat and signal its location without handlers having to disturb the animal or its shelter. The method is promising, but it remains an experimental monitoring tool: more than 100 surveys in known dragon habitat produced only one detected scat, and no additional wild population has yet been established through the trial.
A lizard that can disappear in plain sight
The Victorian grassland earless dragon (Tympanocryptis pinguicolla) is about 15 centimetres long when fully grown. It lives in native temperate grassland and uses abandoned wolf-spider burrows for shelter, breeding, overwintering and protection from predators and temperature extremes. Adults can move more than 110 metres in a day, so a sighting at one point does not reveal the full area an individual may use.
The species is listed as critically endangered under Australian and Victorian conservation systems. It was not seen in Victoria for 54 years before its rediscovery in 2023. The rediscovered population’s precise location is being withheld to reduce the risk of disturbance, and the species is currently known from one location west of Melbourne.
Its habitat has been severely reduced: national recovery-plan material reported in 2009 said that less than 1% of native temperate grasslands remained. Documented threats include:

Those conditions make every reliable record valuable. Conservation managers need to know where dragons occur, which parts of the grassland they use and what recovery actions should be prioritized.
How the detection dogs search
Training to recognize a specific scent
Zoos Victoria’s Wildlife Detection Dog Squad trains dogs to identify target odours. For this project, Sugar and Moss were taught to distinguish Victorian grassland earless-dragon scat from scat produced by similar-sized reptiles. They could also distinguish scat from captive dragons from scat collected from wild dragons, an important check that the dogs were responding to the species rather than to a generic reptile smell.

Reading the alert without disturbing the dragon
When a dog detects the target odour, it alerts by sitting and pointing its nose toward the source. The handler interprets that signal and maintains enough distance to avoid disturbing a dragon, its burrow or nearby habitat. Because the dog can work from scent rather than a direct view, the team can investigate concealed sites and traces that a person might miss.

What the 2026 study has actually shown
Strong discrimination in controlled testing
The 2026 study account reports that Sugar and Moss successfully separated Victorian grassland earless-dragon scat from scat of similar-sized reptiles. Their ability to tell captive from wild dragon scat further demonstrated fine-grained scent discrimination under test conditions.
Very little scat in the field
Field availability was the major obstacle. After more than 100 surveys in areas known to contain dragons, the dogs detected only one scat. That result does not invalidate the training; it shows that a technically capable dog still needs enough detectable material in the landscape to produce useful records. Scat may be scarce, hidden, degraded by weather or located where access is difficult.

The smaller size makes them easier to conceal from theft/vandalism, and also much easier to carry out into the field.
Consequently, the project has not yet shown that detection dogs can census the species, estimate its abundance or reveal additional populations. It has demonstrated a promising scent-detection capability and supplied evidence for continuing the conservation trial.
Detection dogs compared with visual surveys
| Survey question | Detection-dog approach | Conventional visual search |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Scat odour and, where detectable, a live animal | A live dragon seen by a person |
| Disturbance risk | Handlers can interpret an alert from a distance and avoid opening or entering a refuge | Observers may need to approach closely enough to see the animal |
| Cryptic shelter sites | Can investigate scent associated with concealed burrows or nearby traces | Cannot confirm an unseen animal without a visible sign |
| Dependence on field evidence | Useful only when detectable target odour is present and remains available | Useful only when an animal is visible during the search |
| Mapping value | A confirmed scat or animal alert can add a distribution or habitat-use record | A confirmed sighting can add a distribution record |
No validated head-to-head accuracy percentage has been published for this dragon project. The comparison therefore describes what each method can detect, not a claim that one has a measured overall win rate.

How the work fits the recovery program
The dog research is supported by the NESP Resilient Landscapes Hub. The project runs from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2027 and has $390,920 in GST-exclusive funding. Its stated purpose is to improve knowledge of the dragon’s distribution, habitat use and recovery priorities.
Those maps can guide habitat protection, weed and rabbit control, predator management and decisions about where future surveys should concentrate. A non-invasive scent record may also help researchers revisit an area without repeatedly handling animals.
The Australian Government has described the potential broadly: “Using detection dogs in this way could be a game-changer in the conservation of this and other threatened Australian lizards and snakes.” The wording is deliberately about potential. The current evidence supports a useful new search method, not a completed population assessment.
What happens next
Through June 2027, researchers can test where the dogs work best, how long scat remains detectable and whether combining scent searches with visual surveys, habitat modelling and other monitoring methods increases the chance of finding animals. Better field yield would be needed before the method could support broad distribution estimates.
For now, the most defensible conclusion is narrow but important: Sugar and Moss can recognize the Victorian grassland earless dragon’s scat, and they can search with less direct disturbance than a close visual inspection. The trial has not yet found more wild populations, but it is improving the conservation toolkit for a lizard that survived decades without a Victorian sighting.
