DeFi swap aggregators search eligible liquidity sources and assemble a route for a token trade. To judge whether a route suits you, compare the expected and minimum output, gas and other fees, and how the order will execute—not just the displayed exchange rate. No aggregator or routing mode is guaranteed to deliver the best realized result on every trade.
What is a DeFi swap aggregator?
A swap aggregator is software that searches across supported decentralized exchanges, liquidity pools, or other trading sources for a way to complete a token swap. It may route the trade through one source or split it across several. This article is about swap aggregators, not yield aggregators, which allocate deposited assets among investment strategies.
The available route depends on the aggregator’s integrations, the token pair and network, the trade size, and the execution preferences in use. A service can only consider sources its system supports and has enabled. For example, 1inch describes Pathfinder as finding routes across integrated liquidity sources; that is a provider description, not a promise that every source or network is covered at all times.

How does an aggregator choose a route?
For a requested swap, the aggregator evaluates possible ways to trade the input token for the output token. A route may use one pool, pass through an intermediate token, or distribute the order among multiple sources. The resulting quote is shaped by the eligible sources and the routing strategy—not by a universal search of every market.

Routing controls are product-specific. The Uniswap API documentation, for instance, lists protocol-selection options including V2, V3, V4, UniswapX V2, and UniswapX V3, as well as BEST_PRICE and FASTEST routing preferences. An integrator’s settings determine which protocols its quote can consider; these controls should not be assumed to exist in the same form on every aggregator.
A quote is an estimate for a particular moment, not a guarantee of the final trade. Market conditions can change between quote and execution, and the eventual result can be affected by slippage, transaction costs, or whether an order fills.
How do direct routes differ from intent or auction execution?

Details vary by protocol. For example, 1inch’s Fusion explainer, dated May 5, 2026, says approved resolvers compete to fill orders through a Dutch auction. It describes user-set amounts and slippage bounds, partial fills, and the possibility that an order expires or falls outside the user’s tolerance. It also says resolvers cover associated gas for Fusion orders and that failed or expired orders can be resubmitted without gas under that mechanism. These are Fusion-specific descriptions, not general features of every intent system.

What should you compare before swapping?
Compare quotes for the same token pair, network, trade size, and approximate time. Otherwise, differences may reflect changing market conditions or different trade inputs rather than routing quality.
- Expected output: The estimated amount of the token you will receive.
- Minimum output: The least amount the transaction is configured to accept under its slippage conditions. Check this value rather than relying on the headline rate alone.
- Gas and other fees: Consider the estimated network cost and any disclosed interface, service, or infrastructure fee. A route with a higher gross output may not have the best net outcome after costs.
- Eligible sources: Check which protocols and liquidity sources the quote is allowed to use. A narrower route set may produce a different result from a broader one.
- Execution behavior: Establish whether you are submitting a pool transaction or signing an order that waits for a resolver or filler, and check for partial-fill or expiry conditions.
- Signing details: Review token approvals and the transaction or order data shown by your wallet before confirming.
The Uniswap quote API reference documents fields such as minimum output, slippage tolerance, routing, gas estimate, approval applicability, and swap transaction data. These are useful comparison dimensions; they do not establish that any particular aggregator wins a live comparison.
How do slippage and transaction costs affect the result?
Slippage and minimum output
Slippage is the difference between an expected trade price and the price available when execution occurs. A slippage tolerance or minimum-output bound sets a limit on how far the accepted result may move from the quote. A tighter bound can reject a trade that moves beyond your limit; a looser one permits a wider range of outcomes. Neither setting makes a quote certain to execute at its displayed rate.

Check the minimum output shown for the specific swap and make sure the tolerance matches your willingness to accept price movement. Do not assume the same setting or behavior applies across every aggregator or execution mode.

Network gas and service-related charges are distinct costs, and their treatment depends on the execution path. A displayed rate alone may not show the full cost of a trade, so use the fee disclosure for the exact interface and mode you are using.
In a March 5, 2026 fee article, 1inch distinguishes Pro interface network gas from Swap interface resolver-filled orders and describes exceptions, including Solana or native-token swaps and very small swaps routed through the DEX aggregator. It also says positive-slippage surplus handling is at the API-provider level and that certain swaps may include infrastructure fees. Those dated, product-specific terms can change; check the current disclosure for your trade rather than treating any interface as universally fee-free.

How do you choose a routing preference?
Choose a price-focused search when output matters most
A BEST_PRICE preference, where available, searches eligible routes for the strongest quoted price according to that API’s criteria. Use the minimum output and fee estimates to assess the resulting trade; the preference does not guarantee the best net execution after the quote is generated.
Choose a speed-focused search when finding a route quickly matters
A FASTEST preference, where available, returns the first route found to complete the swap in the Uniswap API’s documented behavior. It may be useful when route-search speed is the priority, but it is not equivalent to a search for the highest output.
These labels describe different matching strategies, not universal promises. The better fit depends on your priorities, the eligible protocols, and live trade conditions. Other aggregators may use different controls or terminology.

How can you reduce avoidable trade risk?
Aggregation can expose a trade to more routing options, but it does not make a token, quote, order, contract, or transaction risk-free. Before signing, use this short check:
- Confirm the token pair, network, and trade size.
- Check expected output, minimum output, and slippage conditions.
- Review estimated gas and every disclosed fee for the selected mode.
- For an intent order, inspect its bounds, expiry, and partial-fill behavior.
- Verify the approval and transaction or order details in your wallet.
There is no established universal winner based on the documented routing mechanisms alone. A useful choice is the one whose eligible sources, net expected outcome, execution conditions, and signing details fit your particular trade.
