Deep-sea research vehicles collect images and samples by sending a tethered, remotely operated vehicle (ROV) down from a ship. Pilots steer it while watching live video and vehicle data; lights and cameras document the site, and tools such as manipulator arms, sample boxes, suction samplers, and water bottles gather selected material. NOAA’s Deep Discoverer and Seirios are examples rated to 6,000 meters, but equipment and depth limits vary by vehicle.

What a deep-sea exploration vehicle does

A research ROV is more than an underwater camera: it is a remotely operated work platform. A ship lowers the vehicle, and operators aboard the ship guide it through a tethered connection while monitoring its video, position, and operating condition. The vehicle carries equipment for observing the seafloor, measuring water conditions, and collecting material for later study.

NOAA’s Deep Discoverer and Seirios can reach a stated depth of 6,000 meters (about 3.7 miles). That figure applies to these named vehicles, not to all ROVs. Their scientific work can include high-definition video, biological and geological sampling, and measurements such as salinity, temperature, depth, and dissolved oxygen. NOAA’s Deep Discoverer overview describes the vehicle and its operations.

The combination matters: seeing a feature, locating it, measuring its surroundings, and recovering a specimen are related but distinct tasks. A camera provides visual evidence; sonar and navigation help the crew orient the ROV; environmental sensors measure conditions; and sampling tools bring a limited amount of material back for study. A vehicle’s usefulness for a particular mission depends on the equipment it carries as well as its operating depth.

How the team documents a site

Lights and cameras make the scene visible

At depth, sunlight does not illuminate the seafloor. Vehicle-mounted lights illuminate the area in front of the ROV, and cameras record what falls within their view. Deep Discoverer carries high-definition video cameras and LED lamps; its configuration is one specific example rather than a standard for every research vehicle.

Video and still images document organisms, terrain, and the relationship between them. NOAA notes that ROV imagery can be the first recorded view of a particular area. Researchers can annotate observations with latitude and longitude, connecting what appears in a frame to a location on the seafloor. Imagery also preserves a record when the team does not collect a physical specimen.

Lighting and camera coverage shape what the record can show. The footage captures the illuminated scene within the cameras’ view, rather than everything around the vehicle. It can nonetheless preserve observations over an area and their visible context, which is valuable when a physical collection is not possible or is not the purpose of that part of a dive.

Sonar and navigation add context

A camera shows only the illuminated scene within its field of view. Sonar and navigation systems help pilots understand the vehicle’s surroundings and position, including areas outside the camera’s immediate view. In the control room, those feeds are considered alongside video and vehicle diagnostics so pilots can maneuver and document observations safely. NOAA’s control-room overview describes the information operators monitor.

These systems serve complementary roles rather than replacing one another. Video shows visual detail where the lights reach; sonar and navigation help the operators interpret surroundings and manage the ROV’s position. Latitude and longitude annotations can link an image or observation to a place, so a later review is not limited to what a frame looks like in isolation.

How ROVs collect different kinds of samples

Rocks and attached organisms

Pilots use hydraulic manipulator arms to pick up or handle objects and place them into sample boxes. Some vehicles also carry a rotary suction sampler for delicate material that could be damaged by grasping. The choice depends on what is being collected and the equipment aboard that vehicle.

Deep Discoverer’s January 2025 NOAA factsheet lists two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms, biological and rock sample boxes, and a rotary suction sampler fitted with five 2.7-liter jars. These tools let the team recover selected specimens, but a collection is not a complete inventory of everything living or present at the site. NOAA describes recovered samples as a general representation of the biological and geological information at an explored location.

Collection is a deliberate, selective operation. The pilots must maneuver close enough to the target to use the relevant tool, then handle the object and place it in a container. A sample box, suction sampler, and manipulator arm are not interchangeable: the payload offers different ways to collect different kinds of material. The imagery may document far more of the site than the small set of material that the vehicle can recover.

Seawater at a selected depth

To collect water, the team can trigger a Niskin bottle at a chosen depth. Deep Discoverer’s factsheet lists five individually triggered Niskin bottles, each with a capacity of 1.7 liters. Water collected at different depths can be processed for particular questions, including environmental DNA (eDNA)—genetic material organisms leave in their surroundings.

In a 2023 NOAA expedition example, researchers collected water at different depths with vehicle-mounted Niskin bottles, then filtered it aboard ship for later eDNA analysis. This is a documented workflow for that expedition, not a claim that all water samples or missions are handled identically. See NOAA’s account of water collection and eDNA processing.

The choice of depth is part of the sampling question: a bottle can collect water from a selected point in the water column rather than only from the seafloor. In the NOAA example, samples from different depths were filtered aboard the ship for subsequent analysis. That distinction is useful when explaining how a water sample differs from a rock or organism collected at the bottom: the target, trigger point, and later handling are specific to the investigation.

Capability Deep Discoverer configuration
Maximum operating depth 6,000 meters, as listed for Deep Discoverer and Seirios by NOAA
Imaging and illumination High-definition video cameras and LED lamps
Manipulation Two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms
Biological and geological collection Bio boxes and rock boxes; rotary suction sampler with five 2.7-liter jars
Water collection Five individually triggered 1.7-liter Niskin bottles
Navigation and measurement Sonar and a CTD system; NOAA also describes measurements such as salinity, temperature, depth, and dissolved oxygen
Listed sample capacity per dive Up to 11 biological/geological samples and five water samples

The depth and equipment figures are vehicle-specific. The “up to” sample count is a stated capacity, not a promise that every dive collects that many samples. NOAA’s Deep Discoverer and Seirios factsheet provides the configuration details.

For a useful vehicle comparison, look at the maximum operating depth, imaging and lighting arrangement, sampling payload, and sensor and navigation equipment. These are more meaningful than treating ROVs as if they were consumer cameras or interchangeable products. The NOAA factsheet gives specific details for Deep Discoverer and Seirios, but the sources here do not provide a broad, like-for-like comparison of other named vehicles. There is also no single universal payload or depth rating to infer from the Deep Discoverer example.

The capacity figures also need to be read in context. The factsheet lists room for up to 11 biological or geological samples and five water samples on a Deep Discoverer dive; the figures describe the stated vehicle capacity, not the amount required or recovered on every mission. What the team actually collects is guided by the purpose of the dive and the available tools.

What happens during and after a dive

Shipboard operators direct the work

The control room is the mission’s operating center. Pilots steer the ROV while watching camera feeds, sonar, navigation information, and system diagnostics. This coordination matters because collecting a sample requires more than reaching an object: the pilot must position the vehicle and tool, handle the target, and secure the material without losing track of the surrounding site.

Hydraulic systems operate the manipulators and can also support sample handling and adjustable lights. A NOAA feature about a 2026 shakedown describes how a hydraulic-control issue can prevent pilots from manipulating objects, collecting samples, or adjusting lights. It illustrates a possible operational dependency, not a failure that occurs on every mission. The feature is available at NOAA’s ROV shakedown report.

This is one reason an ROV mission is coordinated engineering and piloting, not simply a camera recording a descent. The pilots need to interpret several kinds of information and operate tools from the ship. A system issue can affect more than one activity: in the NOAA shakedown example, hydraulic control is relevant to manipulating objects, collecting samples, and adjusting lights. That example illustrates a dependency rather than a routine outcome.

Recovery and processing depend on the material

After the dive, shipboard staff recover the ROV and remove collected material. What happens next depends on the sample and the scientific question. In the 2023 water-collection example, the team filtered water aboard ship for later eDNA analysis; biological specimens and rocks may require different handling and examination.

There is no single post-dive processing recipe in the cited examples. The documented water workflow involves onboard filtration for later eDNA analysis, while other specimens can be examined for biological or geological questions. Keeping the workflow tied to the sample type avoids implying that every recovered item is processed in the same way.

How images and samples contribute to research

Images preserve visual evidence and context: what an organism looked like, where it was seen, and how it related to nearby terrain or other organisms. Scientists can review and annotate video and imagery after the dive. This record can document observations even when no specimen is recovered.

Physical samples allow closer examination than video alone. Biological specimens may help researchers determine whether an organism represents a species new to science or clarify relationships among organisms. Rocks can help explain how a section of seafloor formed. NOAA describes biological specimens being sent to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History for study. Images and samples therefore complement one another: imagery documents a broader scene, while the recovered material supports detailed analysis of a limited selection.

The two records answer different questions. A video can show an organism in place and preserve its visible relationship to the surrounding terrain; a collected specimen can be examined more closely. A rock sample can support investigation of how an area formed, while an image records the setting in which it was observed. Neither record makes the other unnecessary, and imagery can still document a discovery in places where no physical sample is collected.

What the collection can—and cannot—show

  • Images are observational records. They show what the cameras could see under the vehicle’s lighting and field of view, not every organism or feature in the surrounding area.
  • Samples are selective. Pilots choose what to collect, and the vehicle’s tools and capacity limit what can be recovered. A sample set represents selected material, not a census of the site.
  • Vehicle specifications differ. Deep Discoverer’s depth rating, cameras, manipulators, and bottle capacity describe that system. Other vehicles and missions may have different capabilities.
  • Methods follow the question. A rock, a delicate organism, and seawater require different collection tools and may receive different handling after recovery.

These limits do not make the records uninformative. They clarify what a dive can establish: images can document location and visible context, while carefully chosen physical samples can support closer biological, geological, or chemical investigation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do deep-sea exploration vehicles collect images and samples?

A ship deploys a tethered ROV, and pilots use live video and vehicle data to steer it. Lights and cameras record the illuminated scene; manipulator arms, sample boxes, suction samplers, or Niskin bottles collect selected material, depending on the target and vehicle payload.

How deep can NOAA’s Deep Discoverer and Seirios go?

NOAA lists a 6,000-meter (about 3.7-mile) depth capability for Deep Discoverer and Seirios. That rating applies to those named systems, not to every ROV.

What samples can Deep Discoverer collect?

NOAA’s January 2025 factsheet lists biological and rock sample boxes, a rotary suction sampler with five 2.7-liter jars, and five individually triggered 1.7-liter Niskin bottles. It lists capacity for up to 11 biological/geological samples and five water samples per dive; actual collections vary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do ROVs collect water for eDNA analysis?

A team can trigger a vehicle-mounted Niskin bottle at a selected depth. In a 2023 NOAA expedition example, water collected at different depths was filtered aboard ship for later environmental DNA analysis. That is a documented example, not a universal workflow for all missions.

Why collect samples if the ROV already records video?

Imagery documents visible organisms and their context, while physical specimens allow closer examination. Biological samples may help researchers study species and relationships, and rocks can help explain how a seafloor area formed. The sample set is selective rather than a complete inventory.

The Bottom Line

Deep-sea ROVs combine shipboard piloting, lights, cameras, navigation and sensors to document places people cannot reach directly. Specialized tools collect selected organisms, rocks, or seawater for further study. Deep Discoverer illustrates what one scientific vehicle can do, but its depth rating, equipment, capacity, and handling procedures should not be assumed to apply to every ROV or dive.
