Shallow-water reef-building corals generally live in warm, sunlit seas and often share food-making duties with photosynthetic algae. Deep-sea corals live in dim or dark water and obtain food by capturing plankton and organic matter drifting past their polyps. Both are animals, and both can create habitat; some deep-sea corals even build reefs. The difference is not simply “reef” versus “no reef,” but how each group lives in its environment.

At a glance: the main differences

These are broad patterns, not rules that describe every coral species. The depth labels also vary among NOAA sources, so the figures below are source-specific descriptions rather than a universal boundary between shallow and deep corals.

Feature Shallow-water reef-building corals Deep-sea corals
Light and setting Typically occupy warm, clear, sunlit tropical or subtropical water. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet describes shallow-water corals as living at less than 30 m (98 ft). Live in dim to dark water. NOAA Fisheries describes them across depths from about 150 ft to more than 10,000 ft; NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet uses deeper than 50 m (164 ft) for its category.
Temperature Warm water is characteristic of shallow reef habitat. NOAA Fisheries says reef-building corals generally cannot tolerate water below 64°F (18°C). Often cold. NOAA Ocean Exploration reports 4–12°C (39–54°F) as a typical range and notes that some deep-sea corals have been found at −1°C (30°F).
Food and energy Many host symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae. The algae photosynthesize and transfer organic material to the coral; the coral can also capture food. Without sunlight for photosynthesis, deep-sea corals generally capture plankton and organic matter from the surrounding water with their polyps and tentacles.
Habitat structure Many deposit calcium-carbonate skeletons, and colonies can build the familiar reef framework. May form branching groves, gardens, or other animal-built habitat. Some species also build reefs and mounds.
Growth and longevity NOAA Ocean Exploration gives a broad growth range of 0.3–10 cm (0.1–4 in) per year, depending on species. Many grow very slowly; NOAA Ocean Exploration says some species add only a few millimeters per year. It reports that many live for hundreds of years and some colonies exceed 4,000 years.
Color and bleaching A coral under stress may expel its symbiotic algae and turn stark white. This is coral bleaching. These corals lack the algae associated with that bleaching process. White coloration can be normal, so color alone does not show whether a deep-sea coral is healthy.

The range figures above come from NOAA Ocean Exploration and NOAA Fisheries descriptions, which do not define the categories identically. Growth and temperature figures are also reported as broad ranges or examples, not as values that apply to every species. NOAA’s descriptions are useful for orientation, but they are not a field guide for identifying an individual coral from depth or color alone.

Why sunlight changes how corals get food

Shallow reef-builders share a partnership with algae

Corals are animals made up of small, soft-bodied polyps. Many shallow-water reef-building species host microscopic photosynthetic algae called zooxanthellae within their tissues. In sunlit water, the algae use light to produce organic material and transfer some of it to the coral. That partnership helps explain why many familiar reef builders thrive in clear, bright environments.

The partnership does not make a coral a plant, nor does it mean a coral lives only on photosynthesis. The coral can also capture food. The key distinction is that symbiotic algae provide an important source of energy to many shallow reef-builders, while deep-sea corals generally cannot depend on photosynthesis in their dark surroundings.

Light is therefore not merely a backdrop. It enables the algae to photosynthesize, which in turn supports the coral. Shallow reef habitat is typically warm, clear, and moving, conditions associated with the familiar reef-building group. NOAA Fisheries says reef-building corals generally cannot tolerate water below 64°F (18°C); that is a general description, not a guarantee that every shallow-water coral has the same temperature limit.

Deep-sea corals feed from what the water carries

In the absence of useful sunlight, deep-sea corals generally feed by catching plankton and organic matter with their polyps and tentacles. Food has to arrive in the surrounding water; it is not made locally by photosynthetic algae living in the coral. This means the two groups rely on different routes for obtaining energy, even though both are coral animals.

NOAA Ocean Exploration notes that over half of all known coral species are found in cold, deep, dark waters. The number is a reminder that corals are not limited to tropical reefs. It does not mean that every deep-sea species has the same feeding habits or that all corals live at great depth. It also helps explain why the familiar sunlit reef is only one part of coral diversity.

“Deep-sea” has no single cutoff

Depth labels are useful for describing habitats, but the NOAA sources use different thresholds. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet describes shallow-water corals as occurring at less than 30 m (98 ft) and uses deeper than 50 m (164 ft) for deep-water corals. NOAA Fisheries, meanwhile, describes deep-sea corals at depths from about 150 ft to more than 10,000 ft. These are not interchangeable definitions of a biological dividing line.

The descriptions also convey different things: a category used in one fact sheet and a broad habitat range used by another. A coral’s depth alone does not tell the whole story about its species, food source, or habitat. In this comparison, “shallow-water reef-building corals” means the familiar sunlit reef-building group, not every coral that happens to occur in relatively shallow water.

The apparent gap between 30 m and 50 m should not be read as a zone where corals cannot occur. The sources are using different descriptive categories, and the organisms and habitats do not sort themselves according to one universal cutoff. When comparing a particular coral, its species and environmental setting matter more than attaching a rigid label based on depth alone.

Do deep-sea corals build reefs?

Yes. Some deep-sea coral species build reefs and mounds, so it is inaccurate to say that deep-sea corals never build reefs. Other colonies form branching groves, fans, columns, or tree-like gardens rather than the familiar tropical reef landscape. The structures differ among species and places; “deep-sea coral habitat” is not one uniform shape.

These structures matter beyond the coral itself. NOAA Fisheries describes deep-sea coral habitat as supporting fish, shrimp, crabs, and other organisms. Branching or other complex growth provides places for animals to live or shelter. A coral garden can therefore be ecologically important even if it does not resemble a broad, sunlit tropical reef.

NOAA Fisheries calls deep-sea corals and sponges “the largest yet least known environment on Earth.” The “least known” part reflects a practical limitation: NOAA says the full extent of these habitats remains poorly mapped. NOAA Fisheries has also stated that less than 0.05% of the seafloor had been mapped. That figure is time-sensitive and describes mapping coverage as reported by NOAA, not a precise measure of how much coral habitat exists. A map that does not show a coral garden is not, by itself, evidence that the habitat is absent.

Growth, age, and why damage can matter

Growth varies widely among species and conditions, so the NOAA figures should be read as ranges and examples, not as a direct prediction for any particular colony. NOAA Ocean Exploration reports shallow-water coral growth of 0.3–10 cm (0.1–4 in) per year, depending on species. For deep-sea corals, it says some species grow only a few millimeters per year; many live for hundreds of years, and some colonies exceed 4,000 years.

Those deep-sea examples describe exceptionally long-lived colonies, not a typical age for every deep-sea coral. They nevertheless show why disturbance can have long consequences: a structure that took a long time to grow may not be quickly replaced if damaged. NOAA Fisheries says bottom trawling can reduce delicate coral gardens to rubble. Because different corals grow at different rates, the figures do not support predicting how long a particular damaged colony or reef will take to recover.

The mapping gap makes it harder to describe where all such habitats occur. NOAA Fisheries also says the effects of warming, acidification, changes in salinity, mineral extraction, and oil spills on deep-water coral habitats have not been studied in depth. The sources cited here do not establish a quantitative comparison of climate vulnerability between shallow and deep coral groups, so they do not support ranking one as categorically more vulnerable.

White coral does not always mean bleaching

In many shallow reef-building corals, bleaching describes the loss of symbiotic algae. Under stress, a coral may expel those algae and become stark white. The white appearance is a sign of that change, not a description of the algae themselves turning the coral white.

Deep-sea corals do not depend on the same sunlit algae partnership. NOAA’s explanation of bleaching therefore should not be applied to them as if every white coral were bleached. Some deep-sea corals are naturally white, and color alone is not a reliable indicator of their health. Interpreting color requires knowing which kind of coral and environment is being observed.

How to read the comparison without overgeneralizing

  • Use “usually” and “many.” Sunlight-linked algae are characteristic of many shallow reef-builders, but the comparison is not a rule for every coral.
  • Keep habitat and category separate. NOAA sources use different depth descriptions; a single cutoff should not be treated as universal.
  • Do not equate reef-building with shallow water. Some deep-sea corals build reefs and mounds, while many others form different kinds of habitat.
  • Interpret color in context. White can follow algae loss in a shallow coral, but it can be normal for a deep-sea coral.
  • Keep numerical examples attached to their caveats. Temperature, growth, and longevity vary among species; the cited figures are NOAA’s broad ranges or reported examples.

NOAA Ocean Exploration and NOAA Fisheries provide the descriptions and figures discussed here. The NOAA pages cited for these values did not show publication years in their retrieved metadata, so no year is assigned to the reported numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the main difference between deep-sea and shallow-water corals?

Many shallow-water reef-building corals live in warm, sunlit water and host photosynthetic zooxanthellae that transfer organic material to them. Deep-sea corals live in dim or dark water and generally capture plankton and organic matter with their polyps and tentacles. Both are animals, and both can form habitat.

How do deep-sea corals get food without sunlight?

They generally catch plankton and organic matter carried through the surrounding water using their polyps and tentacles. They do not rely on photosynthesis by zooxanthellae in their dark habitat.

Do deep-sea corals build reefs?

Yes. Some species build reefs and mounds. Other deep-sea corals form branching groves, fans, columns, or gardens that provide habitat for fish, shrimp, crabs, and other animals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are deep-sea corals white because they are bleached?

Not necessarily. Deep-sea corals lack the symbiotic algae involved in the familiar bleaching process of many shallow reef-building corals, and white can be a normal color. Color alone is not a reliable health indicator.

How deep is “deep-sea” for corals?

There is no single cutoff used by all sources. NOAA Ocean Exploration’s fact sheet uses deeper than 50 m (164 ft), while NOAA Fisheries describes deep-sea corals from about 150 ft to more than 10,000 ft. These are source-specific descriptions rather than a universal biological boundary.

Do deep-sea corals grow more slowly than shallow-water corals?

NOAA Ocean Exploration says some deep-sea species grow only a few millimeters per year, while its broad range for shallow-water coral growth is 0.3–10 cm (0.1–4 in) per year, depending on species. The figures are not a direct prediction for every coral; growth varies substantially among species and conditions.

The Bottom Line

Shallow-water reef-builders commonly benefit from sunlight-powered algae, while deep-sea corals generally capture food from the water around them. Depth, temperature, growth, and form vary, and the labels do not have one universal cutoff. Both groups can build habitat, but a white deep-sea coral is not necessarily bleached, and some deep-sea colonies grow slowly enough that damage may persist.
