In Dead Cells, a weapon’s scaling stat determines which of your stats boosts its damage. If an item lists two scaling stats, the higher one is the active damage-scaling stat; if it is colorless or legendary, it uses your highest stat instead. Affixes are extra effects that can strengthen a weapon, but their value depends on whether your build can meet their conditions.
That distinction matters when you spend scrolls or decide whether to replace a weapon. A legendary is not automatically the best choice, and a weapon’s color is not a substitute for checking its listed scaling, moveset, level, and effects.
How weapon scaling works
Dead Cells has three main stats: Brutality, Tactics, and Survival. A weapon’s item information lists the stat or stats with which it scales. Its damage benefits from the stat that is currently active for that item, so the way you distribute scrolls can affect how well a weapon fits your build.

For an item with two listed scaling stats, the higher of your two stats is the one used for damage scaling. For example, if a weapon lists Brutality and Tactics and your Brutality is higher, Brutality is the active stat. The weapon icon’s dominant color indicates which stat is currently ahead; when the two values are equal, the icon is split between their colors.

This makes the item listing more useful than assumptions based on a weapon’s name or apparent style. Check the actual scaling shown on the drop, then check which of its listed stats is higher in your run. A weapon can list a pair of stats, but that does not mean both contribute equally to its damage.
Choosing a stat for a build
When deciding where to put scrolls, keep most of your investment aligned with the weapon you expect to use. If your main weapon’s listed stats include the stat you are raising, it can benefit from that investment. If you switch to a weapon whose listed stats do not include your leading stat, check its scaling again rather than assuming your previous choice still suits it.
Brutality weapons are often lighter and faster, while Survival weapons are often slower and heavier, according to the official gear reference. Those are tendencies, not rules that identify every weapon. Judge a weapon by its moveset, effects, and the scaling listed on its item card; an archetype or color alone does not tell you whether it fits your run.

Colorless gear
Colorless items scale with your highest stat, even when that stat differs from the item’s usual or base scaling. This lets a colorless item follow the build you have developed rather than forcing it to use the stat normally associated with its type. The official wiki identifies cursed chests and blueprint unlocks from the Collector as ways to find colorless items.

Colorless describes how an item relates to your stats; it does not by itself tell you whether the item’s moveset or effects are useful. Compare the actual drop with the weapon you already have, including the stat it will use in your run.
Legendary gear after update 3.0
Legendary items are colorless, so they scale with your highest stat. Since update 3.0, they no longer scale with the two highest stats. The official gear history records that the update changed legendaries to use only the highest stat, added +6 gear power, and replaced a guaranteed starred affix with a guaranteed legendary affix. Legendaries cannot be upgraded and have the same power increase as S-quality items.
Motion Twin explained the scaling change in its update 3.0 notes: “It was mostly overpowered, rather counter-intuitive (you had to split stats whereas you should do the opposite in non-legendary situations) and not really fun (just adding more damage on top of your damage).” This explains the design rationale for the 3.0 change; it is not a claim that every legendary will suit every build.

Older descriptions that say legendary weapons benefit from your two highest stats describe the pre-3.0 rule, not the rule documented after that update. A guide that discusses gear carrying scrolls may also be out of date: update 1.9 removed scrolls from items. The official history lists Hunter’s Grenade as an exception, gaining one scroll of each stat at 3 or more Boss Stem Cells.

What affixes do
Affixes are additional effects attached to gear. They appear beneath the item’s primary description and can add damage under particular conditions or provide effects such as generated arrows and grenades. They are separate from the weapon’s basic moveset and its scaling stat: scaling concerns which stat boosts damage, while an affix adds an effect that may change how the item performs in a build.
Read the effect and its trigger condition
When reading an affix, separate what it does from what must happen for it to work. An effect that improves damage against an enemy affected by a status is valuable only if your build can apply that status reliably. If you cannot meet the condition consistently, the text may sound stronger than the effect will be in practice.
Affix-generated arrows and grenades can interact with status-on-hit effects, according to the official affix reference. That interaction can matter when evaluating a combination: an affix may do more than add its direct effect if it helps trigger another effect in your setup. Check the specific wording and consider whether your other gear can make the interaction useful.

A legendary item has an item-specific guaranteed legendary affix in addition to its ordinary rolled affixes. Motion Twin’s 3.0 notes state: “A Legendary Weapon will always have its Legendary Affix on top of its normal rolled ones.” Because the guaranteed effect is generated after ordinary affixes, a legendary can have combinations that are unavailable on ordinary gear.

The guaranteed affix is a reason to inspect a legendary carefully, not a reason to equip it without comparison. Its value depends on what the particular effect does and how it works with your weapon, status application, and other gear.

Compare the weapon you are considering with the one you have in the context of your current run. Use these checks in order; they separate basic fit from the extra value supplied by quality and affixes.
- Compare the base weapon and moveset. Decide whether its attacks and effects work for the way you play. A scaling match cannot make a moveset you do not want into a good fit.
- Check its listed scaling. For an ordinary item with two listed stats, identify the higher stat in your run. For colorless or legendary gear, identify your highest stat instead.
- Compare gear level and quality. Account for the item’s level and quality rather than judging by its name or color alone. A legendary’s documented power increase is relevant, but the label does not replace the rest of the comparison.
- Read the ordinary affixes. Consider both their effects and the conditions that trigger them. A conditional damage effect is useful only if you can apply the relevant status or otherwise meet the condition.
- Check synergy with the rest of your build. Consider how the affixes fit your other gear and whether effects such as generated arrows or grenades can interact with your status-on-hit setup.
- Include the legendary affix, if present. Evaluate its specific effect alongside the ordinary rolls. Do not treat the guaranteed affix as a universal upgrade independent of the build.
Example: a dual-stat drop
Suppose a weapon lists Tactics and Survival. If Tactics is your higher stat, Tactics is the active damage-scaling stat for that item. The icon’s dominant color should reflect the stat currently ahead; if the stats are tied, the icon is split. The practical question is not simply whether the weapon has two colors, but whether its active stat, attacks, level, and affixes suit your run.
Example: a colorless drop
If a colorless weapon’s usual scaling differs from your highest stat, it still follows your highest stat. That can make it fit a build that would not normally favor the item’s base stat. You still need to compare its moveset and affixes with the weapon it would replace; colorless scaling answers which stat it uses, not whether it is the better weapon.

Example: a legendary drop
A legendary uses your highest stat, has its guaranteed item-specific legendary affix in addition to normal rolled affixes, and receives the documented power treatment associated with update 3.0. Compare those advantages with the current weapon’s scaling alignment, quality, moveset, and useful ordinary affixes. A legendary may be a stronger fit, but the name alone does not settle the choice.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming two listed stats both boost damage. For dual-stat gear, the higher listed stat is the active damage-scaling stat.
- Splitting stats to make a legendary use two of them. That was the pre-3.0 legendary rule. The documented post-3.0 rule uses the highest stat.
- Reading color as a complete verdict. The icon’s dominant color indicates which listed stat currently leads; it does not rank the weapon’s overall usefulness.
- Equipping an affix for its headline effect alone. Read its trigger condition and decide whether your build can satisfy it reliably.
- Treating every legendary as an automatic upgrade. Its scaling, level and quality, moveset, ordinary rolls, and guaranteed effect all matter to the comparison.
- Relying on an old gear description. Update 1.9 removed scrolls from items, and update 3.0 changed legendary scaling and affixes. Check the version context when a guide describes different rules.
Which rule should you use in a run?
For ordinary gear, read the listed scaling stats and use the higher one to understand which stat is active. For colorless and legendary gear, use your highest stat. Then judge affixes by their conditions and fit with the rest of your setup, and compare the whole weapon rather than relying on its color or rarity label.
These are the rules documented by the official gear references and update 3.0 notes. If a later game update changes them, its patch notes would take precedence; the version history summarized here establishes the 1.9 and 3.0 changes but does not establish a later patch-specific change.
