The difference is who controls the private keys and the recovery process. A custodial app or exchange manages the keys for a hosted account; a self-custody wallet puts key control—and responsibility for protecting recovery information and authorizing transactions—with the user. A company may offer both kinds of product, so its name alone does not tell you how a particular account or wallet works.

What custody means for your crypto

Crypto assets are controlled through private keys. In a custodial service, the provider holds or manages the keys associated with the hosted account, while you access and use the account through that service. In a self-custody wallet, you control the keys, commonly through a recovery phrase or another wallet-specific mechanism.

This distinction affects more than where keys are stored. It determines who can restore access, who is responsible for keeping recovery information safe, and how you authorize transactions. It also changes what you depend on: custodial users rely on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and service availability; self-custody users take on the work of protecting their keys and backups.

Neither arrangement is automatically safer in every situation. Custody is a division of control and responsibility, not a security rating. The right choice depends on how you want to manage access and recovery, and on the specific product’s design.

How a custodial app or exchange account works

A custodial provider maintains the hosted wallet keys and operates the account through which customers access their assets. You typically sign in to the platform to view or transact, rather than directly managing the private keys. The provider may offer account recovery or credential resets under its own procedures.

That recovery path can be useful if you lose access to your login, but it is a service offered under the provider’s rules. Your access may depend on the provider’s security practices, policies, financial condition, and ability to keep operating. A provider’s recovery process is not the same as having your own private-key backup.

Coinbase says Coinbase.com accounts are custodial and that it maintains the keys for the hosted wallet. Kraken describes Kraken Exchange as custodial. Those descriptions apply to those products; they should not be generalized to every product from either company.

How a self-custody wallet works

With self-custody, you control the keys used to authorize transactions. A wallet may give you a recovery phrase or another documented recovery method. You are responsible for securing that mechanism and using the wallet to approve transactions.

If you lose the recovery method, the outcome depends on the wallet’s design and documented recovery options. Bitcoin.org warns that permanently lost self-custodied funds cannot be recovered by a wallet provider or another party. Before relying on a wallet, understand exactly how it handles recovery and whether it offers any additional documented method; do not assume every wallet uses the same setup.

Self-custody products can differ even within one product family. Kraken describes a seed-phrase wallet mode and an embedded wallet mode. Check the particular wallet’s information about recovery and key export rather than assuming that the label “self-custody” tells you all the operational details.

Custodial and self-custody wallets compared

Question Custodial app or exchange Self-custody wallet
Who controls the keys? The provider controls the keys for hosted assets. The user controls the keys, subject to the wallet’s mode and design.
How might access be recovered? The provider may support account recovery or credential reset. Recovery depends on the wallet’s phrase, backup, or documented recovery mechanism.
How are transactions accessed? You act through the platform’s account and service. You authorize on-chain transactions through the wallet.
What is the main dependency or responsibility? You depend on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and service availability. You are responsible for key security, backups, and transaction decisions.
What should you check? Service terms, account recovery, access restrictions, supported assets, and fees. Wallet mode, recovery design, supported networks and assets, transaction approvals, and fees.

This is a qualitative comparison, not a rating of security or fees. Product features and terms can change, and the table does not establish that one custody model is cheaper.

Why the company name does not settle the question

A company can offer a custodial exchange account and a separate self-custody wallet. Coinbase distinguishes Coinbase.com, which it describes as custodial, from Coinbase Wallet, which it describes as self-custody with keys on the user’s device. Kraken distinguishes Kraken Exchange, which it calls custodial, from Kraken Wallet, which it describes as on-chain and offers in seed-phrase and embedded modes. Kraken Support’s comparison page was last updated September 15, 2026.

Those examples show why it is important to identify the exact product and account type. Seeing the same company name on an app or website is not enough to determine who controls the keys or what recovery is available.

How to check a product before using it

Use the product’s current documentation and terms. Answer these questions for the exact account or wallet you intend to use:

  1. Identify the product and mode. Confirm whether you are using an exchange account, a hosted wallet, or a self-custody wallet. If the wallet offers more than one mode, identify which one is active.
  2. Find out who controls the keys. Look for a direct explanation of whether the provider maintains the keys or you control them. Do not infer custody from the company name or the fact that you can see a balance in an app.
  3. Read the recovery instructions. For an account, check the provider’s recovery and credential-reset process and any relevant access restrictions. For a self-custody wallet, find its documented recovery method and understand what happens if the phrase, backup, device, or other recovery mechanism is lost.
  4. Understand transaction authorization. Determine whether actions are performed through the provider’s account service or authorized by you through the wallet. Read what approvals the wallet asks you to make before a transaction.
  5. Check assets, networks, and fees. Confirm that the specific assets and networks you need are supported, then review the applicable fees and terms. The custody model alone does not establish a fee advantage.

Keep these checks product-specific. A provider’s explanation of its exchange does not automatically describe its wallet, and one wallet mode may have different recovery details from another.

For a useful comparison, check the same categories on both sides rather than relying on a single feature or slogan. For an exchange account, find out how account recovery works, what access restrictions may apply, which assets are supported, and which fees or terms apply to your intended use. For a wallet, check its recovery design, supported networks and assets, the approvals involved in transactions, and its fees. These questions help clarify the practical consequences of custody without turning the label into a claim about overall quality.

Pay particular attention to the distinction between recovering an account and recovering keys. A provider may offer a credential reset for its hosted account, while a self-custody wallet’s recovery depends on the wallet-specific method documented for that product. Likewise, the existence of a recovery phrase in one wallet does not establish that another wallet, including one from the same company, uses the same method. Verify the instructions for the exact mode you plan to use.

What can happen if you lose access?

If you lose access to a custodial account

Use the provider’s account-recovery procedure and follow its current requirements. The provider may be able to restore account access or reset credentials, but recovery is governed by the service’s process and policies. Confirm those procedures before you need them; the possibility of account recovery does not mean every access problem has the same outcome.

If you lose a self-custody recovery method

Consult the wallet’s own documentation to determine whether another recovery route exists. Do not assume a company’s support team can recreate keys it does not control. Bitcoin.org’s guidance is that permanently lost self-custodied funds cannot be recovered by a wallet provider or another party. The practical implication is that understanding and safeguarding the wallet’s documented recovery mechanism is part of using it.

Security and responsibility are different trade-offs

Custody places key management with a provider, so the user must consider the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and continued service. A provider may also have account recovery procedures, but the user remains dependent on how that service operates.

Self-custody reduces dependence on a custodial provider for key control, but it shifts key protection, backup management, and transaction authorization to the user. Bitcoin.org’s guidance emphasizes that control of private keys comes with responsibility for security. A recovery phrase or other backup is consequential: a wallet’s documented method matters because a lost recovery mechanism can leave no provider able to restore access.

Hardware wallets are one physical format for self-custody; software wallets can also be delivered as mobile apps or browser extensions. Coinbase Help names Ledger and Trezor as examples of hardware devices, alongside those software formats. A hardware format does not remove the need to protect recovery information, guard against phishing or malware, or review transaction approvals.

The format is separate from the custody question. A hardware device is a physical way to use a self-custody wallet, not evidence that recovery or transaction risks have disappeared. The same basic check still applies: understand who controls the keys, what backup or recovery method the product documents, and what you need to authorize. Coinbase Help lists Ledger and Trezor as examples, but those examples are not a ranking or a recommendation of a particular device.

Choosing which model fits your situation

Start with how you want to handle key control and recovery, rather than assuming one model is universally preferable.

  • A custodial account may fit if you prefer to access assets through a provider account and want to rely on that provider’s account-recovery process. In return, you depend on the provider’s security, policies, solvency, and service.
  • A self-custody wallet may fit if you want direct control of keys and are prepared to manage the wallet’s recovery method, backups, and transaction approvals yourself. If losing that recovery method would be unacceptable and the wallet has no recovery route that meets your needs, reconsider using that mode.
  • Either choice requires product checks if supported assets, networks, fees, or access terms matter to you. Compare the actual product documentation; the custody label alone does not answer those questions.

The useful decision is not simply “app or wallet.” It is whether you are comfortable with the specific provider or wallet’s allocation of key control, recovery, and responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who holds the keys in a custodial crypto app?

The provider controls or manages the keys for assets in its hosted account. You access the account through the service, and any recovery or credential reset is governed by that provider’s procedures and policies.

Can I recover crypto if I lose my self-custody recovery phrase?

It depends on the wallet’s documented recovery design. Check whether that exact wallet offers another recovery method; do not assume support can recreate keys it does not control. Bitcoin.org warns that permanently lost self-custodied funds cannot be recovered by a wallet provider or another party.

What is the difference between Kraken Wallet and Kraken Exchange?

Kraken describes Kraken Exchange as custodial and Kraken Wallet as an on-chain wallet. Kraken Wallet has seed-phrase and embedded modes, so check the recovery and key-export details for the mode you use. Kraken Support’s comparison page was last updated September 15, 2026.

Is a custodial account safer than a self-custody wallet?

Neither model is categorically safer. Custodial users depend on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and service; self-custody users control the keys but must protect the recovery mechanism, backups, and transaction approvals themselves.

The Bottom Line

Choose based on who you want to control the keys and how you want access recovered—not on the company name alone. Compare the exact product’s recovery method, supported assets and networks, transaction approvals, fees, and terms. Custody shifts responsibility; it does not by itself guarantee lower costs or greater safety.
