Bitcoin-mining curtailment means reducing or stopping electricity use when the value of making power available to the grid or earning power-related credits exceeds the mining income the site gives up. It can be triggered by a grid instruction, a market or price signal, or a miner’s own decision under its power contract. The rules and payoff depend on the program, location, timing, and contract: the Texas examples below describe ERCOT and Riot Platforms, not a universal mining-industry formula.

What curtailment means for a Bitcoin mine

A mining facility is a large, adjustable electricity load. To curtail is to reduce that load—partially or completely—for a period rather than use all available electricity to run mining equipment. The reduction can be voluntary or made in response to an instruction or signal from a grid operator or market program.

ERCOT, the grid operator for most of Texas, describes two broad ways flexible loads can participate in demand response: they can offer into electricity markets, directly or through an intermediary, or voluntarily reduce use in response to wholesale prices. The key idea is flexibility: the site’s electricity use can change when the grid or market values reduced demand.

Curtailment is not automatically a shutdown, a penalty, or a donation of power. Depending on the arrangement, the operator may receive power-sale proceeds or credits, demand-response or ancillary-service compensation, or a reduction in future transmission costs. The payment mechanism matters as much as the fact that equipment was turned down.

Why a miner might stop mining while it still can

Mining uses electricity to run computers that compete to produce Bitcoin blocks. If a site has a power contract and equipment available, it can appear that keeping every machine on is always the best choice. That overlooks the opportunity cost: electricity used for mining cannot simultaneously be returned, sold, or made available under a curtailment arrangement.

A rational operator compares what it expects to earn by using the electricity for mining with what it can earn or save by reducing use. Riot Platforms says it may power down and return power when prospective curtailment credits exceed the Bitcoin mining revenue it would otherwise have earned. This is a company-specific decision rule; the actual comparison depends on Riot’s contract and costs, and a different miner may face different terms.

The comparison is also time-sensitive. A price or program opportunity applies to particular intervals, while mining revenue depends on the operator’s conditions during the same decision period. The evidence cited here does not establish a universal price at which all miners should shut down, or a standard response time that applies to every site.

How the main curtailment routes differ

“Curtailment” can describe several arrangements that have different initiators, compensation, and requirements. These mechanisms should not be collapsed into one generic payment for switching off.

Mechanism Who initiates or shapes the response What value may apply Does payment require an actual shutdown?
Demand response or market participation A flexible load may offer into a market or reduce use in response to a wholesale-price signal; the applicable program determines the operating terms. Demand-response compensation may apply. Riot reports this separately from manual-curtailment power credits. Not stated for demand-response compensation in the cited ERCOT overview. Riot says ancillary-service compensation may be received whether or not it is called to curtail.
Ancillary services Riot describes bidding a portion of available load so ERCOT can direct the site to power down when needed. Riot says compensation is based on hourly power rates and the amount of load bid. Not necessarily in Riot’s description: compensation may be paid whether or not the site is called to reduce load.
Manual or price-driven power return The operator chooses whether to consume contracted power or return it under its power-supply arrangement, depending on economics and contract terms. Power resale proceeds or credits, which Riot says may be compared with foregone mining revenue. Returning the power entails reducing consumption; the specific credit calculation depends on the contract.
ERCOT Four Coincident Peak (4CP) A participant voluntarily reduces load during the relevant summer peak intervals. Potential credits against future transmission costs. The potential benefit described is tied to reducing load during the relevant intervals; no general payment amount is stated.

This comparison reflects the arrangements described by ERCOT and Riot, not a complete catalogue of every electricity-market product or contract. ERCOT’s current demand-response overview is high-level; it does not establish identical terms for every participant.

Demand response and ancillary services

In Riot’s description of ancillary-service participation, the company bids a portion of available load. The site must remain powered on while that capacity is available so ERCOT can direct it to power down. Riot says compensation is based on hourly power rates and the quantity of load bid, and may be received even if ERCOT does not call for a reduction during the period.

That arrangement is different from simply choosing to sell unused contracted electricity. A payment for making load available is not necessarily the same thing as a credit for returning power, and the two may be accounted for separately. Riot’s filing reports demand-response credits separately from manual-curtailment power credits.

Manual curtailment and power return

Riot says its Rockdale power purchase agreement allows it to choose not to consume contracted power and instead sell it for credits against future power costs when doing so is economically beneficial, depending on spot prices. In its description of manual curtailment, Riot compares those prospective credits with the mining revenue it would forgo by powering down.

This example depends on the terms of that agreement. It does not establish that every miner can resell electricity, receive the same kind of credit, or choose freely when to curtail. A site’s ability to return power, and the value it receives, depend on its contract and the relevant market conditions.

ERCOT 4CP and transmission costs

Four Coincident Peak, or 4CP, is a separate Texas mechanism. Riot describes the relevant periods as the four highest-load settlement intervals in June through September. Reducing load during those intervals can earn credits against future transmission costs.

4CP should not be treated as another name for emergency curtailment or a demand-response event. Its purpose in this example is to reduce future transmission costs through lower use during specified system-peak intervals. The cited filing does not provide a universal 4CP credit amount or a guarantee that a reduction will produce a particular saving.

A practical way to decide whether curtailment makes sense

There is no single mining-revenue threshold that applies to all sites. The useful test is to compare the value of the alternatives for the same load and time interval, using the operator’s actual contract and program terms.

  1. Estimate the mining value of the power. Determine the Bitcoin mining revenue the site expects to earn by consuming the relevant electricity, based on its current operating conditions. Treat this as the revenue at risk if the load is reduced—not as a guaranteed amount.
  2. Identify each available curtailment value. Check whether the decision involves power-sale proceeds or credits, demand-response or ancillary-service compensation, possible 4CP transmission-cost savings, or a combination permitted by the applicable arrangements. Keep separate payments separate rather than assuming every program pays for the same action.
  3. Read the contract and program conditions. Confirm whether the site may return contracted power, how credits are calculated and applied, what amount of load is committed, and whether compensation depends on an actual reduction or on making capacity available. Verify the relevant interval and any operating requirements.
  4. Confirm the site can execute the reduction. A financial opportunity only matters if the operator is eligible and able to reduce the relevant load for the relevant period. Account for the amount of load that can be changed under the arrangement rather than assuming the whole facility is always available.
  5. Compare the alternatives for that interval. Curtail when the value available from reducing or returning power exceeds the mining income given up, after applying the contract’s actual credit and compensation terms. For ancillary services, include the value of availability as described by the program rather than treating it as conditional on a call.
  6. Keep the decision mechanism-specific. A manual power-return decision, an ancillary-service commitment, and a 4CP response have different triggers and benefits. Evaluate each under its own rules; the sources do not establish that one is always more profitable.

This framework is a way to organize the decision, not a substitute for a power contract, market rules, or a forecast. In particular, Riot’s stated rule for manual curtailment is not evidence that another operator can access the same credits or should use the same threshold.

What Riot’s reported credits show—and what they do not

For the six months ended June 30, 2026, Riot Platforms reported $31.077 million in total power-curtailment credits. Its filing breaks that total into $28.293 million of manual-curtailment power credits and $2.784 million of demand-response power credits. These are Riot’s reported figures for that six-month period, not a rate per megawatt-hour, a forecast, or an industry benchmark.

The split is useful because it shows that the company accounts for more than one kind of power-related credit. It does not show that all of the credits came from the same event, that another miner could earn comparable amounts, or that the reported credits exceeded the mining revenue forgone. Those conclusions require details beyond the reported totals.

ERCOT’s role and the limits of the Texas example

ERCOT’s December 6, 2022 announcement said the grid operator managed power flow for more than 27 million Texas customers, representing about 90 percent of the state’s electric load. Those figures describe ERCOT’s footprint, not the scale or effectiveness of Bitcoin-miner curtailment.

In that announcement, ERCOT Vice President of System Planning Woody Rickerson described participating large loads as having “the flexibility and willingness to reduce their energy use quickly, if needed.” ERCOT also said that working with large loads during peak demand periods would help it serve Texans while keeping the grid reliable and resilient. These are statements of the program’s rationale, not quantified evidence of a particular reliability improvement or consumer-bill reduction.

The same 2022 release described a voluntary program as temporary while longer-term rules were pending. It should not be used as proof of current program terms. For current categories, ERCOT’s demand-response overview provides a high-level explanation; the applicable market rules and a participant’s agreements determine the details.

Common misunderstandings to avoid

  • “Every shutdown earns a payment.” A reduction only has value under an applicable contract or program. The mechanism may instead compensate availability, return power for credits, or reduce future transmission costs.
  • “Demand response and power resale are the same.” Riot reports manual-curtailment power credits separately from demand-response credits. The labels represent different arrangements in its reporting.
  • “The grid must call the miner before it can benefit.” Riot says ancillary-service compensation may be received whether or not it is called to curtail. That does not mean every form of curtailment compensation works that way.
  • “A Texas example applies everywhere.” The ERCOT and Riot examples are specific to the Texas market and Riot’s arrangements. They do not establish rules or economics for mines in other grids or under other contracts.
  • “A large credit total proves curtailment was more profitable than mining.” A credit total alone does not supply the relevant forgone mining revenue, the amount of load involved, or every contract cost needed to make that comparison.

What is not established by the available figures

The cited sources do not establish a universal shutdown response time, a general curtailment threshold, or an industry-wide curtailment rate. They also do not quantify the effect of Bitcoin-miner curtailment on household electricity bills or grid reliability. Claims on those points would require evidence beyond the ERCOT overview, its historical 2022 announcement, and Riot’s company-specific 2026 filing.
