A crypto liquidation price is an estimate of when a leveraged position—or, with shared margin, an account—no longer has enough equity to meet its required maintenance margin. It is not a universal price or a guaranteed execution level: the calculation depends on the contract, margin mode, collateral, maintenance-margin tier, fees and the exchange’s trigger rules. To manage the risk, use the venue’s calculator, watch the mark price as well as the chart’s last price, and keep position size and account exposure within a loss you can tolerate. None of those steps can guarantee that liquidation will not occur.
What a liquidation price means
When you open a leveraged futures or perpetual-contract position, you provide margin rather than paying the full notional value of the position. Your profit and loss change as the contract price moves. The exchange also requires the position or account to maintain a minimum amount of equity, called maintenance margin. If equity falls to the level required by the venue’s rules, the exchange can take over and close some or all of the position. The displayed liquidation price is an estimate of the price level associated with that threshold.
For a simple linear contract, losses on a long position grow as price falls, so its estimated liquidation level is below entry. Losses on a short grow as price rises, so its estimate is above entry. That direction is intuitive; the exact distance from entry is exchange- and contract-specific. Contract denomination, margin allocated, position size, maintenance requirements, fees and the exchange’s liquidation process all matter.

Leverage affects how much price movement your margin can absorb, all else equal. A position with high exposure relative to its supporting equity has less room for adverse movement. Do not interpret a leverage setting or a displayed liquidation level as a prediction of price or a protection against loss.

How exchanges calculate the estimate
Isolated positions
In isolated margin, the exchange assesses the collateral assigned to a position separately from the rest of the account. A simplified way to understand the calculation is to ask how much adverse price movement the position’s available margin can support before equity reaches maintenance margin, after any applicable deductions. For a linear contract, position size converts a price move into a profit or loss. The exchange then applies its contract’s maintenance-margin requirements and relevant fees.
This is a mental model, not a universal formula. Bybit publishes separate long and short equations for isolated USDT perpetual contracts using entry price, initial margin, maintenance margin, position size and any extra margin. OKX publishes separate equations for USDT-margined and crypto-margined futures. Their equations should not be combined into a single formula: contract denomination and venue rules change the inputs and calculation.
Maintenance-margin tiers and fees
Maintenance margin is the minimum equity required to keep a position open. It may be tiered by exposure or risk limit. As a position moves into a higher risk tier, its required maintenance-margin rate can change, which can move the liquidation estimate closer. Check the tier for the position size you actually intend to hold rather than relying on a small-position example.
Closing fees and other contract-specific deductions can also affect the threshold. Bybit’s isolated USDT contract explanation notes that its maintenance-margin rate is determined by risk-limit tier and that closing fees can cause a small difference between a displayed value and a simplified calculation. OKX’s published equations likewise include position-tier and fee inputs. The exchange calculator is more dependable than a hand calculation that omits those details.
A clearly labeled Bybit cross-margin illustration
Bybit’s Unified Trading Account liquidation-rules illustration uses a 2 BTC long entered at 10,000 USDT, 100x leverage, 2,000 USDT of available balance and a 0.5% maintenance-margin rate. In that example, 100 USDT is reserved for maintenance margin, leaving 1,900 USDT of sustainable loss. Dividing that amount by 2 BTC gives 950 USDT of loss per BTC; subtracting it from the 10,000 USDT entry gives an estimated threshold of 9,050 USDT.

Bybit explicitly presents the illustration without fees. Its inputs—including the 0.5% rate—are assumptions for that example, not universal market rates or a formula to apply to another venue, contract or risk tier.
Why isolated and cross margin behave differently
Isolated margin: position-level collateral
With isolated margin, collateral assigned to one position is evaluated separately. Bybit says liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the position’s liquidation price; liquidation of one isolated position does not affect another. Adding margin to the isolated position generally gives it more room to absorb losses and moves its estimate farther from entry, if other inputs remain unchanged.
That additional room is not a guarantee. Price can move rapidly, fees and maintenance requirements still apply, and the exchange’s trigger and execution rules determine what happens when the threshold is reached. Before adding collateral, consider whether the total potential loss remains acceptable.
Cross margin: shared account collateral
Cross margin shares eligible collateral among positions. A loss on one position can therefore reduce the resources available to support others; gains or losses elsewhere can also affect account equity. The liquidation estimate shown beside one position may move as the rest of the account changes, so it is a reference rather than a fixed boundary.
Bybit describes cross- and portfolio-margin liquidation as occurring when the account’s maintenance-margin ratio reaches 100%. Its displayed cross-margin liquidation price is a dynamic worst-case reference, affected by factors such as account equity, unrealized profit and loss, open positions, maintenance requirements and available margin. A favorable displayed estimate for one position does not capture every possible change in a shared account.

Changing leverage is not the same as adding equity
Do not assume that changing the leverage selector will always move the liquidation price. OKX states that changing leverage alone does not change its estimated liquidation price, although occupied margin and available balance change. The relationship depends on how the venue applies leverage and on the position setup. Use the calculator for the specific contract and margin mode rather than inferring the result from the leverage number alone.

Why liquidation can happen before the chart reaches the displayed price
The exchange may trigger on mark price
The last traded price is the price of the most recent trade and is often what a default chart emphasizes. Mark price is a separate reference used by many futures venues to assess liquidation risk. Bybit says liquidation uses mark price rather than last traded price. Binance says futures liquidation prices and unrealized P&L are calculated using mark price, which combines funding data and spot-market price data.
Consequently, the mark price can reach a liquidation threshold while the chart’s last price appears not to have touched it. This can also explain why a stop-loss keyed to last traded price does not execute first: Bybit warns that liquidation can be triggered by mark price before a last-price stop-loss condition is met. Check which price reference your stop uses and compare it with the exchange’s mark price.
The displayed threshold is not a promised fill price
A liquidation estimate marks a risk threshold; it does not promise that the position will be closed at exactly that number. Binance notes that in a fast market, mark price can move through a calculated threshold before the liquidation process executes, so the price shown in liquidation history may differ from the displayed estimate. Trigger price, takeover and execution are separate parts of the process.
Exchanges may also use staged or partial-close procedures. Bybit describes tiered partial-close behavior in some risk tiers, while OKX documents liquidation clearance fees. The exact process depends on venue and contract. Read the applicable rules instead of assuming every exchange closes a position in one order at the displayed threshold.

How to check a liquidation estimate before opening a position
- Select the exact contract and direction. Confirm whether the instrument is linear or crypto-margined, and whether you are modelling a long or short. A formula for one contract type may not apply to another.
- Choose the intended margin mode. Set isolated, cross or portfolio margin as applicable. In shared-margin modes, examine the account-level risk measures as well as the individual position estimate.
- Enter the planned entry price and position amount. Use the size you expect to trade; the relevant maintenance tier can depend on exposure.
- Include the margin you will actually allocate. For isolated margin, account for any extra margin you plan to assign. For cross margin, review available balance and other open positions that can use shared collateral.
- Review the displayed assumptions. Check the maintenance-margin tier, fee treatment, trigger reference and any contract-specific inputs. If a calculator does not expose an assumption, consult the venue’s trading rules before relying on the estimate.
- Stress-test an adverse move. Consider the loss at prices before the estimate, how much equity remains, and how another open position could affect shared margin. The liquidation price alone does not show whether the potential loss is tolerable.
OKX recommends using its platform calculator. Its documented path is: on the trading page, open the Menu (three-dot menu) in the top right, choose Calculator, select margin mode and direction, then enter leverage, entry price and amount. Its guidance also directs traders to the trading rules for position tiers. Interface labels can change, so follow the current labels shown in your account.

Size the position for the loss you can bear
Set position size and total account exposure around a tolerable loss, not the largest size the platform permits. Binance explains that larger absolute exposure requires more margin and lower leverage, and recommends adding margin or reducing positions to lower margin ratio. Reducing exposure can create more room between current price and a maintenance threshold, but it also changes the amount at risk; calculate the effect using the contract’s rules.
Monitor mark price and account risk metrics
Keep the mark price visible when managing a position whose liquidation trigger uses it. For cross or portfolio margin, monitor total equity and the account maintenance-margin ratio, not only a position-level estimate. Review other open positions and correlated exposures, since a loss elsewhere can weaken the collateral supporting a cross-margined position.
Use margin additions carefully
Adding collateral can increase the equity supporting an isolated position and generally move its estimated threshold farther away. It can also expose more of your account balance to that trade. In cross margin, available balance is shared, so an addition or a loss in another position can change account-wide risk. Treat extra collateral as exposure, not as a substitute for an acceptable position size.
Do not rely on a stop-loss as a liquidation guarantee
A stop-loss is an order with its own trigger and execution conditions. If it triggers on last traded price while liquidation uses mark price, the liquidation trigger may arrive first. Even when the trigger is reached, a fast market can affect execution. Check the stop’s price reference, order type and venue rules; leave a risk buffer rather than setting a stop close to the liquidation estimate.

Recheck after meaningful account changes
Recalculate when you change position size, margin mode, collateral or other positions, and when the exchange’s applicable risk tier changes. An estimate calculated before those changes may no longer describe the position’s current margin conditions. No calculator can remove the risks from rapid price moves, fees, changing requirements or shared collateral.
What to compare in an exchange’s liquidation rules
The useful comparison is not simply which venue displays the largest gap between entry and liquidation. Compare the mechanics that determine the estimate and what happens when risk rises.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Margin modes | Isolated collateral is assessed position by position; cross or portfolio margin can make risk account-wide and the displayed position estimate dynamic. |
| Trigger reference and mark-price method | Establish whether liquidation uses mark price, how it is constructed, and which reference your stop-loss uses. |
| Maintenance tiers and position limits | Determine how required margin changes with exposure and whether the planned size moves into a different risk tier. |
| Fees and deductions | Check how closing or liquidation-related fees enter the calculation and whether they can alter the threshold or proceeds. |
| Account-level trigger | For shared margin, identify the maintenance-margin ratio or other account condition that triggers liquidation; do not treat an individual estimate as a guarantee. |
| Liquidation process | Review whether the venue uses partial closes, takeover steps or additional fees, and how volatile-market execution can differ from the estimate. |
The official materials differ in what they establish. Bybit’s “Trading Rules: Liquidation Process (Unified Trading Account)” covers cross-margin calculations, tiers and liquidation mechanics; its “FAQ — Order Execution and Liquidation” explains mark-price triggers and the cross-margin reference price; and “Liquidation Price (USDT Contract)” covers isolated USDT calculations. OKX’s “Forced liquidation FAQ” describes its formulas, fees, margin adjustments and calculator. Binance’s “Binance Futures Liquidation Protocols” covers mark-price-based liquidation and the effect of volatility. Check each venue’s current rules for the particular contract and your region; these documents do not establish that every contract or feature is available everywhere.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating the estimate as an exact future execution price. It is a threshold estimate subject to current inputs and venue process.
- Using a last-price chart as the only risk monitor. The venue may use mark price for liquidation.
- Applying an example rate to another position. The 0.5% maintenance rate in Bybit’s example is an illustration, not a general rate.
- Assuming cross margin protects every position independently. Shared collateral means one position’s losses can affect the account’s ability to support another.
- Assuming leverage alone determines the liquidation estimate. Margin mode, available balance, contract rules, fees and tier inputs matter; OKX specifically says a leverage change alone does not alter its estimate.
- Counting on added margin or a stop-loss to prevent liquidation. Both can change exposure or reduce risk under some conditions, but neither guarantees a particular outcome.
Liquidation mechanics are venue-specific. This guide explains how to interpret the estimates and manage the associated risks; it is not personalized financial advice or a recommendation to enter a trade.
