A crypto ETF “inflow” usually means an authorized participant (AP) created new ETF shares and delivered cash or cryptocurrency to the fund. An “outflow” usually means an AP redeemed shares and received cash or cryptocurrency back. These transactions occur in the primary market in large creation units; most investors trading on an exchange are buying or selling existing shares, not transacting directly with the fund.
That distinction matters because a flow figure measures a change in a fund’s shares and assets, not a complete record of investor activity, investor motivation, or the day’s exchange trading volume.
How do crypto ETF inflows work?
Crypto ETF creations are the fund’s primary-market process for issuing new shares. The fund’s agreement defines which broker-dealers may transact directly with it. In the iShares Ethereum Trust prospectus filed with the SEC, the rule is stated this way: “Only registered broker-dealers that become authorized participants by entering into a contract with the Sponsor and the Trustee (“Authorized Participants”) may purchase or redeem Baskets.”
An ordinary investor normally places an order with a broker on an exchange. An AP instead places a creation order with the fund or its administrator and assembles the required basket. Once the fund accepts the order and receives the required assets or cash, it issues a corresponding block of ETF shares.

The creation sequence
- The AP checks the fund’s terms. It confirms the creation-unit size, order cut-off, settlement method, eligible assets, fees and other adjustments in the current prospectus and participant agreement.
- The AP delivers the basket. Depending on the product, that may be bitcoin, ether, cash, or a combination of cash and cryptoassets.
- The fund completes any purchase or execution. In a cash creation, the fund or an appointed execution agent uses the cash to acquire the corresponding cryptoasset.
- The fund issues shares. The AP receives newly created ETF shares in the specified creation-unit size, less or adjusted for applicable charges and obligations.
- The AP may distribute or trade the shares. Shares can be placed with investors, held in inventory, or sold on an exchange. The creation itself is complete even if the AP later resells the shares.
The basket is calculated to represent the fund’s net asset value (NAV), but it is not necessarily a simple multiplication of the latest quoted crypto price. Accrued sponsor fees, other liabilities, transaction charges and execution costs can change the cash or asset amount delivered. The precise calculation and timing are product-specific.
Why a creation is reported as an inflow
A net creation increases the fund’s outstanding share count. It also generally adds the corresponding cash or cryptoasset to the fund, so data services commonly report the event as a positive flow. The dollar amount shown in a headline can depend on the provider’s valuation time, price convention and treatment of fees or other asset movements.
What does an ETF redemption mean?
A redemption reverses the primary-market process. An AP returns a creation unit’s worth of ETF shares to the fund, and the fund delivers cash, cryptoassets or both under the product’s rules. The fund cancels the returned shares, reducing shares outstanding and normally reducing fund assets.

For a cash redemption, the fund or its execution agent sells the required amount of bitcoin or ether and sends the resulting cash to the AP after applicable costs and adjustments. The amount received can therefore differ from a simplistic “shares multiplied by price” calculation.

In-kind redemptions
For an in-kind redemption, the fund transfers the cryptoasset itself to the AP in exchange for the returned shares. No fund-level sale of the cryptoasset is required for that particular transaction. The transfer still follows the fund’s custody, settlement and valuation procedures, and the AP must meet the specified basket requirements.
A redemption is reported as a negative flow because shares and assets leave the fund. It does not, by itself, show whether the AP was acting for an investor, balancing inventory, managing a hedge or responding to a premium or discount in the secondary market.
Cash versus in-kind settlement

Do not treat “crypto ETF” as a single settlement category. SEC materials discuss permitting in-kind transactions for crypto exchange-traded products, but a proposal, prospectus language and an effective approval are different things. A fund’s latest prospectus and applicable regulatory order control the present-tense answer.
How large is a creation unit?
There is no universal basket size. The unit is set by each fund and can change if its documents change. Examples from SEC-filed documents illustrate the range:

These examples show why a flow calculation cannot safely assume that every product creates or redeems the same number of shares, uses the same settlement route or allocates costs in the same way.
How are primary-market creations different from exchange trading?
When two investors trade existing ETF shares on an exchange, ownership changes between them. The fund’s share count and assets usually do not change. That is a secondary-market transaction, even if the trade is large.
A primary-market creation adds new shares; a primary-market redemption removes shares. If demand for shares persistently exceeds available supply, APs can create more shares. If investors or market makers need fewer shares, APs can redeem them. This mechanism helps connect the exchange price with the fund’s NAV, but the filings do not quantify how much of any particular day’s exchange volume resulted in a creation or redemption.

How should you read a crypto ETF flow report?
Start with the direction
- Net creation: shares were issued and corresponding cash or cryptoassets were contributed under the fund’s process.
- Net redemption: shares were returned and fund assets were reduced under that process.
“Net” matters because creations and redemptions can occur on the same day. A provider may combine them into one figure rather than show every gross order.
Check the provider’s measurement rules
Ask which timestamp and price were used: trade time, NAV time, a daily crypto reference rate or another convention. Check whether the calculation includes fees, accrued liabilities, cash balances, in-kind asset movements and late-settling transactions. Primary filings establish the transaction mechanics, but they do not establish one standardized daily flow series used by every data vendor.
Separate flow from asset-price performance
The market value of existing bitcoin or ether holdings can rise or fall without a single share being created or redeemed. Assets under management can therefore change because of crypto price movement, because of net flow, or because of both. A reported increase in assets is not automatically an inflow.

ETF shares can trade above NAV (a premium) or below NAV (a discount). A premium can make a creation attractive to an AP; a discount can make a redemption attractive, but the relationship is affected by execution costs, timing, liquidity and other market conditions. A flow number without the contemporaneous premium or discount gives an incomplete picture of the arbitrage environment.

Do ETF inflows make Bitcoin or ether go up?
Not necessarily. A cash creation can cause the fund or its agent to purchase cryptoasset exposure, which is a potential source of market demand. An in-kind creation transfers cryptoasset exposure from the AP to the fund without requiring the fund to buy that asset in the open market. Even in a cash structure, the purchase may be spread across venues and times, and the cryptoasset’s price is influenced by many other orders and market conditions.
The reverse caution applies to outflows. A cash redemption can require a sale, while an in-kind redemption can transfer the cryptoasset to the AP. Neither flow type alone proves that the broader market price will rise or fall. Price direction, investor motive and future returns are hypotheses that require evidence beyond the transaction record.
Costs, valuation and timing that change the number
Creation and redemption instructions are adjusted for sponsor fees, fund expenses, accrued liabilities, transaction charges and execution costs. The fund’s NAV is calculated under its valuation policy, which may use specified crypto pricing sources and a defined valuation time. An AP’s order cut-off can determine which NAV calculation applies.

These details explain why two services can publish different dollar flow figures for the same fund and date. One may value the basket at a different time, include a different set of adjustments or classify an asset movement differently. Treat a headline amount as a methodology-dependent estimate unless the provider explains its calculation.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every buyer an AP: most exchange investors are not authorized participants and cannot create or redeem directly.
- Equating volume with inflow: secondary-market trades can change hands without changing fund assets.
- Assuming all products are cash-only or in-kind: settlement routes differ by fund and can change after filings or approvals.
- Applying one basket size to the whole market: 40,000, 50,000 and 10,000-share examples are fund-specific terms.
- Reading asset growth as flow: a crypto price gain can increase assets without new shares.
- Inferring motive: a flow record does not identify whether an investor sought exposure, took profits, hedged risk or an AP simply rebalanced inventory.
- Using an old filing: confirm the latest prospectus, Form 10-K or Form 10-Q and any effective regulatory order before describing current terms.
A practical checklist for evaluating a headline
- Identify the fund and the report date.
- Find the fund’s latest prospectus and confirm the creation-unit size.
- Confirm whether cash, in-kind assets or both are permitted.
- Determine who executes crypto purchases or sales in a cash transaction.
- Check NAV valuation time, order cut-offs and fee or cost allocation.
- Compare the exchange price with NAV and note any premium or discount.
- Read the data provider’s methodology for timing, prices and asset movements.
- Keep the conclusion limited to what the flow establishes: a fund-level share and asset change, not a guaranteed price signal or investor-motivation report.
The practical takeaway
Crypto ETF flows are created by primary-market activity. APs exchange large baskets of shares for cash or cryptoassets, increasing or reducing the fund’s shares and assets. Exchange trading, crypto price changes, premiums and discounts, settlement method and reporting conventions all affect how the resulting number should be interpreted. The most reliable explanation is therefore fund-specific and date-specific: verify the current filing before drawing a conclusion from any inflow or outflow headline.
