Cross margin and isolated margin differ mainly in which collateral can absorb losses. Cross margin shares eligible funds across positions, so spare equity can keep one trade above maintenance requirements—but a losing trade can also consume collateral supporting other positions. Isolated margin assigns a defined amount to one position or trading-pair account, normally containing that position’s loss to the allocated margin. Neither mode is universally safer: liquidation triggers, mark-price rules, funding debits, collateral haircuts, leverage tiers and account-wide procedures vary by exchange and product.
Cross margin vs. isolated margin at a glance
| Question | Cross margin | Isolated margin |
|---|---|---|
| Collateral boundary | Eligible funds in the relevant margin account or wallet support multiple positions, subject to asset eligibility, haircuts and account rules. | A specified allocation supports one position or trading-pair account; assets in other margin accounts are ordinarily unavailable to it. |
| What can support a losing trade? | Unused equity elsewhere in the shared pool can help satisfy maintenance requirements. | Only the isolated allocation and any additional margin added to that position normally support it. |
| What can be harmed by the trade? | The shared wallet or account, including collateral supporting other positions. | The allocated margin is ordinarily at risk, but wallet-wide liquidation rules or debits can create exceptions. |
| How liquidation is commonly expressed | An account metric such as maintenance-margin ratio, margin level or risk ratio; a displayed price may be only a moving reference. | A position liquidation price or account-specific threshold, calculated from the isolated allocation and the venue’s rules. |
| Best question to ask | Which balances and positions share this risk pool? | What events can reach beyond the amount isolated for this position? |
These are account-design concepts, not a universal formula. Read the contract and margin documentation for the exact venue before relying on a displayed number.
What margin and liquidation mean
Margin is collateral posted against a leveraged position. Your position’s notional value can be larger than the collateral because the exchange lends or otherwise extends exposure under its derivatives or margin system. Maintenance margin is the minimum equity the venue requires to keep that exposure open. When the account or position no longer meets that requirement, the exchange can close some or all of the position—liquidation.
Liquidation is therefore an exchange rule rather than a single industry-wide calculation. Binance describes margin-level and risk-control calculations that depend on leverage, account type, collateral valuation and other parameters in its Margin Level and Risk Control documentation. Bybit’s Unified Trading Account (UTA) rules use different tests for isolated and cross positions, while Kraken’s Multi-M collateral documentation describes wallet-level liquidation that can affect more than the position that first lost margin.

How cross margin changes your liquidation exposure
Shared collateral can delay a position’s failure
In cross mode, eligible collateral in the relevant account or wallet is pooled. Binance says assets in a cross-margin account are shared as collateral, and Bybit says the entire available account balance is used to maintain open cross positions. Kraken’s Multi-M wallet similarly makes funds available in the margin wallet usable by cross positions, while excluding initial margin set aside for isolated positions. Eligibility, collateral ratios, haircuts, account boundaries and product rules still apply; “cross” does not necessarily mean every asset held at the exchange is available.
If one position moves against you, equity elsewhere in that pool may keep the account above its maintenance requirement. That buffer can be useful when positions are intentionally managed as one portfolio rather than as independent bets.
The same pool spreads the damage
A loss reduces shared equity and can lower the risk capacity of every cross position. Adding a second trade does not create a separate loss limit; it changes the account-level calculation. A profitable position may offset a losing one, but correlation can make several positions deteriorate together. The amount at risk can therefore be much larger than the initial margin shown beside any single trade.

Binance explains the account-wide effect in its Cross Margin Trading Guide. Bybit’s cross liquidation reference is also dynamic: its displayed price is calculated from current balances, positions and market conditions, not a permanent line in the chart.
Cross liquidation is often an account test, not a fixed price
On Bybit UTA, cross liquidation occurs when the account maintenance-margin ratio (MMR) reaches 100%. The liquidation price displayed for a cross position is a reference calculated under a worst-case risk scenario; it changes as account equity, margin usage, other positions and market prices change. Treating that number as a guaranteed trigger can lead to false confidence.

How isolated margin changes your liquidation exposure
A defined allocation normally bounds the position-level loss
Isolated mode reserves collateral for a specific position or trading-pair account. Binance states that funds in an isolated account can collateralize only that account; assets in other cross or isolated accounts cannot be used for it. Bybit describes the maximum position loss in isolated mode as the initial margin plus any extra margin added. Kraken likewise describes isolated initial margin as the funds allocated to that position.
This creates a clearer loss boundary. If you allocate 200 units of collateral and add no more, an ordinary liquidation of that isolated position generally consumes that allocation rather than automatically drawing every balance in your account. The amount is not a promise of a particular liquidation price: leverage, maintenance requirements, fees, funding and collateral valuation still determine how close the position is to liquidation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Isolated” is not an absolute guarantee about the rest of the account
Kraken warns that an account-wide liquidation can liquidate isolated positions as well. It also says funding payments on isolated positions can be deducted from the general wallet balance, potentially causing liquidation in isolation. These are venue-specific exceptions, but they show why “isolated” should be read as a collateral-allocation rule, not as immunity from every wallet-level event.
What actually triggers liquidation
Bybit’s mark-price and MMR rules
Bybit’s UTA documentation states that isolated liquidation is triggered when the mark price reaches the position’s liquidation price. In cross mode, liquidation occurs when account MMR reaches 100%. See the UTA Trading Rules: Liquidation Process for the current process and formulas.
Mark price is not the last traded price
Bybit says the mark price, rather than the last traded price, is the liquidation trigger reference. Mark price is designed to represent a fairer valuation using the venue’s pricing methodology; the last traded price is the most recent matched trade. They can diverge during volatility or thin liquidity.

A stop-loss order may use a different trigger setting. Bybit’s FAQ — Order Execution and Liquidation explains that a stop triggered by last traded price might not activate before mark price reaches liquidation. A chart based on last trades can therefore appear not to have touched the liquidation level even though the mark-price trigger did. A stop order can reduce risk when configured and filled in time, but it does not override the exchange’s liquidation engine.

Other venues use different account metrics
Binance refers to margin levels, risk ratios and collateral calculations that vary by leverage and account type. Kraken’s Multi-M documentation describes maintenance requirements and account-wide liquidation in a multi-collateral wallet. Do not transfer a Bybit MMR rule or a displayed liquidation-price interpretation to another venue without checking that venue’s documentation.
Why collateral valuation changes the result
Eligible collateral is not always valued one-for-one. Exchanges can apply collateral ratios, haircuts, price indices, currency conversions, liabilities and interest. Binance states that collateral haircuts are included in relevant margin-level calculations effective 2026-06-15 at 08:00 UTC; the applicable haircut and account rules determine how much support an asset contributes. A falling token price can therefore reduce both the value of collateral and the value of a position at the same time.
Leverage and risk-limit tiers also matter. A larger position can move into a tier with a higher maintenance requirement or different liquidation handling. Interest, trading fees and funding payments reduce equity. The practical question is not simply “How much cash did I deposit?” but “What is my current eligible equity after valuation adjustments, liabilities and charges?”
Liquidation may happen in stages
Liquidation does not always mean an immediate full close. Bybit’s process describes canceling orders that would increase exposure and, depending on the position’s risk-limit tier, partially reducing position size before a full liquidation. The details are venue-specific: another exchange may use a different sequence, insurance mechanism or close-out method. A partial-reduction stage is not a guarantee that a position can be saved, and it can leave you with a smaller but still leveraged exposure.

Worked examples (illustrative, not exchange formulas)
Cross example: one pool, two positions
Assume a hypothetical account has 1,000 units of eligible equity and two cross positions. Position A loses 400 units while Position B is initially profitable. The account still has the remaining equity and any unrealized gain to support both positions. If Position B then reverses and loses 500 units, the shared pool has absorbed 900 units of combined losses before fees, funding and valuation adjustments. Both positions now have less risk capacity, even though only A was losing at the start.
The figures illustrate the direction of risk, not a liquidation threshold. The exchange’s maintenance requirements, collateral haircuts, leverage tier and mark prices determine whether liquidation occurs.
Isolated example: a bounded allocation with an exception
Assume a trader allocates 200 units to an isolated position and adds no extra margin. Ordinary loss exposure for that position is generally limited to the allocation plus applicable charges under the venue’s isolated rules. A separate 2,000-unit balance in another account is not automatically collateral for it. However, if the venue applies a wallet-wide liquidation event or debits funding from a general wallet, that separate balance or another isolated position can still be affected under the platform’s documented rules.

- Map the collateral boundary. List the exact wallet, account, assets and symbols that can support the position. Check collateral ratios and haircuts, not just the displayed balance.
- Define the ordinary loss boundary. For isolated mode, identify initial margin, any add-on margin and charges. For cross mode, identify every position sharing the pool.
- Identify the liquidation metric. It may be a position liquidation price, account MMR, margin level, risk ratio or another measure.
- Identify the trigger price. Confirm whether liquidation uses mark, index or last traded price, and separately confirm which price triggers your stop order.
- Check leverage and risk tiers. Position size can change maintenance requirements and the exchange’s liquidation sequence.
- Read wallet-wide exceptions. Look for funding debits, interest, liabilities, account-wide liquidation and rules that can reach isolated positions.
- Test the display. Determine whether the shown liquidation price is fixed, estimated or a dynamic reference that changes with other positions and collateral.
Operational checklist before and during a leveraged trade
Before opening
- Confirm you are in the intended cross or isolated mode; do not assume the last-used setting applies to a new symbol.
- Record the account or wallet boundary and the assets accepted as collateral.
- Read the product’s maintenance-margin schedule, leverage limits and risk tiers.
- Check the mark-price methodology and stop-order trigger options.
- Calculate how funding, interest and fees would reduce available equity during the planned holding period.
- Decide the maximum account or position loss you can accept; a liquidation threshold is not a risk-management target.
While the position is open
- Monitor equity, maintenance margin, risk ratio or MMR—not only the chart’s last traded price.
- Watch other cross positions: their unrealized losses can move your account toward liquidation.
- Recheck collateral values after major price moves, conversions or haircut changes.
- Do not add cross collateral reflexively; doing so protects the position only by exposing more account equity.
- If adding isolated margin, note that the added amount increases the position’s potential loss.
- Keep a record of funding and wallet debits so a seemingly unchanged price does not hide declining equity.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“The displayed price is a hard stop”
In cross mode, Bybit calls the displayed liquidation price a reference because MMR and account equity determine the actual event. Correct the mistake by monitoring the account metric and recalculating after every material balance or position change.

“Isolated means no other balance can ever be touched”
Wallet-wide liquidation and funding-debit rules can create exceptions, as Kraken documents. Correct the assumption by reading the venue’s multi-position and wallet rules and keeping operational funds separate when the platform permits.
“The candle never reached liquidation”
The chart may show last traded prices while liquidation uses mark price. Correct the comparison by viewing the venue’s mark-price feed and confirming the stop’s trigger source.
“More leverage only changes the deposit”
Leverage and position size affect maintenance requirements, risk tiers and the distance to liquidation. Correct the mistake by checking the tier schedule for the exact product and size.
“Cross is safer because it has more collateral”
More shared collateral can provide a buffer, but it also places more of the account at risk. Choose cross only when you deliberately want portfolio-level collateral management; choose isolated when a position-level loss boundary is more important and you understand the exceptions.
