CrayonInk’s build shows that turning a photo into a printable coloring page is not just a matter of writing an image prompt. The reported system prepares the photo, queues generation, preserves its framing, converts the result for printing, and adds controls for cost and privacy. Its developer, 王龙, reports using Seedream through fal’s edit endpoint; the implementation and small model test described here are the author’s account, not an independent audit or a broad model benchmark.
How the photo-to-page pipeline works
The build report describes an asynchronous workflow on Cloudflare Workers. Next.js 16 runs through @opennextjs/cloudflare; D1 stores jobs, accounts, credits, and spend records; R2 stores source photos and finished images; and Cloudflare Queues handle generation. The queue is configured with a batch size of one and up to three retries. A 15-minute cron job recovers stuck jobs, refunds a page credit, removes source photos older than 24 hours, and clears expired results and PDFs. Cloudflare Email Service sends operator alerts.
- Prepare the photo in the browser. When the user selects Generate, the browser resizes the image to a maximum 2048-pixel long edge, encodes it as JPEG at quality 0.9, and strips EXIF data. The photo is not uploaded before that action.
- Create and queue a job. The app checks available credits, creates a D1 job record, and enqueues a message.
- Generate an image. A queue consumer builds a prompt from the selected style and detail settings, then sends the photo as a data URI to
fal-ai/bytedance/seedream/v5/lite/edit. - Prepare the result for print. The app converts the generated image to grayscale, thresholds it to a 1-bit PNG at 300 DPI, and pads the canvas instead of cropping it to retain the source photo’s aspect ratio.
- Deliver a printable file. A user can receive a PNG or a one-page PDF in A4 or US Letter. Multiple pages can be assembled into a coloring-book PDF with a cover.
The author also describes an “outline” mode that applies Canny edge detection inside the Worker. It is instant and has no model-call cost in the reported implementation, but its lines are rougher and often remain open.

Why preserving the photo’s framing required a fix
A generated picture can look like a coloring page and still fail if it changes the composition. In the author’s early results, leaving Seedream’s output size unspecified could cause a 4:3 source photo to be reframed as a square. The fix was to calculate output dimensions that match the input aspect ratio and explicitly tell the model not to crop, zoom, extend, add elements, or recompose.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a useful distinction in evaluating image-to-coloring workflows: likeness alone does not show whether the person, pet, or scene remains positioned as in the original. Framing fidelity is its own quality check.
What the author’s model comparison does—and does not—show
王龙 reports an eight-photo bake-off using Wikimedia Commons images: two adults, two family photos, two children, and two pets. The test used two detail levels and four model configurations, for 64 calls run eight at a time. The reported total spend was $3.37. The figures below are the author’s results from that small test, not independently verified measurements.

| Measure | Seedream 5.0 Lite edit result reported by the author |
|---|---|
| Per-page cost | $0.0350 per page, as reported by 王龙 for the test |
| End-to-end time | 61.7 seconds median; 127.5 seconds maximum, with eight requests in flight |
| Subjective likeness | 3.6 out of 5, judged visually on face crops rather than with a recognition metric |
| Printability | 4.5 out of 5 for Standard and 4 out of 5 for Detailed |
The comparison also included Nano Banana 2 edit (1K), GPT Image 2.5 Flare (medium), and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst (high). The supplied results do not give a full set of comparator figures, so they do not support a complete numerical ranking. The author says Seedream remained the default because it framed subjects better among cheaper options and produced cleaner Standard pages, while accepting roughly a minute per page. The author describes Flare as a faster, cheaper challenger that would need a small traffic test before a stronger conclusion.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. The author also could not reconcile costs calculated from billable units with an invoice because the billing endpoint required an admin key. Treat the reported latency, quality, and cost as observations from this build’s test conditions, not as predictions for every image or current provider bill.

Cloudflare’s Seedream listing is a separate service and price
Cloudflare’s Workers AI page identifies bytedance/seedream-5-lite as a third-party ByteDance model and displays a price of $0.035 per image on the page accessed in 2026. It documents an env.AI.run example and image input. That listing is distinct from the fal edit endpoint used in the build report; its displayed price should not be treated as confirmation of the author’s fal costs. Model availability, options, and prices can change.
How prompt and post-processing choices affect printability
The author’s shared prompt rules prohibit shading, gray tones, color, hatching, gradients, text, watermarks, and borders. This is tied to the output pipeline: when gray shading is thresholded into black and white, it can turn into heavy black patches rather than clean printable areas.

For detail-heavy photos, a “Bold & detailed” preset requests thick, even strokes, recognizable facial features with eyes left open, and simplified open motifs for lace, embroidery, or beading. The author also describes a later line-thinning and redrawing step with a round pen, typically 9 pixels in open areas and as little as 5 pixels in dense areas such as hair and lace. These are settings in this implementation, not universal recommendations.
王龙 summarizes the role of this stage: “Post-processing is what turns "a drawing" into "something that prints cleanly," so every model in the comparison below went through this exact step.” The reported shortcomings show why printability needs to be checked separately from whether an image looks attractive on screen: Seedream left one child’s eyes blank at both detail levels, while the Canny mode often produced rough lines that did not close.

Privacy and operational safeguards in the reported build
The author says synchronous output mode (sync_mode) returned output inline but did not prevent the input from appearing in fal request history. In the author’s check, full input payloads, including base64 photo data, were retrievable for five of seven requests. That observation concerns the author’s account and test; it is not a general statement about current provider retention or training practices.
The described mitigations include the X-Fal-Store-IO: 0 header, an object-lifecycle preference requesting expiration after 3,600 seconds, a delayed queue check of request history, attempted deletion if data remained, and a recorded status such as not_stored, deleted, stored, pending, or error. The author notes that deletion requires an admin API key and does not make a claim about provider training policy. Anyone implementing a similar flow should verify the provider’s current retention terms and controls directly rather than infer them from synchronous responses.
Cost controls are also part of the design. The reported build requires sign-in for AI generation, grants a one-time signup credit, limits each account to one active AI job, tracks spend in a backend ledger, applies a USD circuit breaker and daily budgets, uses Turnstile verification, and alerts operators at 80% and 100% of configured budget. A failed job can return the user’s page credit, while the spend ledger charges provider cost at submission because billing may still occur if a job fails, is blocked, or is later deleted.
What this build log is most useful for
CrayonInk’s reported implementation is a practical example of treating image generation as a product pipeline rather than a single API call. The useful engineering lessons are to preserve aspect ratio deliberately, design post-processing around the physical output, and account for queue recovery, spend limits, and provider data handling alongside prompt quality. Its model results are promising for the author’s use case, but the eight-photo, subjective test is too small to establish a general winner.
Cloudflare also documents a separate Browser Run /pdf endpoint for rendering a webpage or custom HTML to PDF, callable from a Worker through Workers Bindings without an API token. The build report does not say CrayonInk uses it; it is an adjacent Cloudflare capability, and the documentation was updated September 26, 2026: Cloudflare Browser Run documentation.
