Crash-avoidance technology can make a collision repair more expensive when cameras or radar sensors need replacement or calibration. At the same time, systems that prevent certain crashes can reduce how often claims occur. Those effects act on different parts of the cost equation, so higher repair bills do not by themselves show whether a feature saves money overall—and no universal savings amount applies to every driver.

Why a modest repair can involve sensors and calibration

Driver-assistance features rely on cameras, radar and other sensors whose position and operation matter. A repair that seems routine can affect them: replacing a windshield may disturb a forward-facing camera, while a collision can damage or shift a sensor. Automakers may require calibration when a sensor is removed, replaced or reinstalled.

Calibration procedures vary. They can require trained technicians, specialized equipment, suitable workspace and current software. The required work depends on the vehicle and repair; a repair shop or insurer should not be assumed to follow one universal process or price.

In a 2023 IIHS survey of owners whose front crash prevention, blind-spot detection or driver-assistance cameras had been repaired, about half reported problems after the repair. The reported issue rate was about two-thirds among respondents whose repair involved windshield replacement, and nearly three-quarters among those whose repair was required because of crash damage. These figures describe surveyed owners who had a feature repaired, not all drivers with driver-assistance technology. They also do not show that calibration itself caused the problems. IIHS’s survey and repair discussion explains the findings.

How costlier repairs can coexist with fewer claims

Insurance losses depend on both claim severity and claim frequency. Severity is the amount needed to settle a claim, and serves as a proxy for repair cost; frequency is how often claims occur. IIHS-HLDI describes overall losses as the product of frequency and severity.

A vehicle with crash-avoidance sensors can therefore cost more to repair after a collision while generating fewer claims in crash types the technology helps prevent. The first effect concerns the cost of a claim that happens; the second concerns claims that might not happen at all. Comparing only the repair bill misses the frequency side of the equation.

IIHS reported in 2026 that average vehicle repair prices had risen more than 40 percent since 2020, attributing the figure to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. That price measure does not include repairs avoided because a vehicle did not crash. It is not, by itself, a measure of whether driver-assistance features save an individual owner money. IIHS’s overview of advanced driver-assistance systems discusses the repair-cost and crash-reduction trade-off.

What the safety evidence does—and does not—show

IIHS reports real-world crash reductions associated with front crash prevention, lane-departure prevention, blind-spot detection and rear crash prevention. The result for one feature should not be assumed to apply to another: systems address different crash types, and performance depends on the system and circumstances.

For example, IIHS reported in 2023 that automatic emergency braking reduced police-reported rear-end crashes by 50 percent. This is a research result, not a promise that every vehicle or driver will see that reduction. Automatic emergency braking is also distinct from forward collision warning: the warning system alerts the driver to a potential collision, while automatic emergency braking applies the brakes when a forward collision is imminent.

Benefits may stack when features are bundled, but the effect depends on the bundle and vehicle studied. An IIHS overview and its summary of an HLDI analysis of bundled features describe this evidence. Neither establishes a net savings amount for every household, vehicle, insurer or feature combination.

Historical glass-claim figures are not a current quote

IIHS’s 2023 repair discussion used $250 as an example of a simple windshield replacement and cited a separate HLDI study finding that vehicles with front crash prevention were more likely to have glass claims of $1,000 or more. Calibration likely accounted for much of that difference. These are historical illustrative figures, not current prices or a quote for a particular vehicle, shop or region. The IIHS article provides the context.

What to ask after windshield work or crash damage

Use the repair estimate and invoice to clarify what work was required and completed. The manufacturer’s requirements for the specific vehicle and repair are the relevant reference point.

  • Ask the repairer whether the vehicle manufacturer requires calibration for the work performed.
  • If calibration is required, ask whether it was completed and whether the invoice documents the procedure and any resulting system checks.
  • Ask the insurer or warranty provider how the repair and any follow-up visit are covered. Coverage and shop practices depend on the applicable policy and circumstances.

IIHS’s 2023 survey found that most of the more than 3,000 owners contacted said they had never needed a crash-avoidance feature repaired; the survey figures about post-repair problems apply to the smaller group who had such a repair. That distinction matters: the survey raises a repair-process concern, but does not describe the experience of every owner.

Driver assistance is not self-driving

Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning and lane-departure warning serve different purposes. They are driver-assistance features, not a reason to stop paying attention or monitoring the road. NHTSA describes Level 0, Level 1 and Level 2 assistance with the phrase “You Drive, You Monitor”: the driver remains responsible for driving and monitoring the vehicle. See NHTSA’s driver-assistance technology guidance.
