Short answer: Valve has publicly confirmed that CS2 can detect some forms of input automation on official servers, but it has not published evidence that VAC identifies players by classifying their ordinary mouse movements and keystrokes. A separate thesis project reports matching players across recorded demos using mouse and keyboard behavior; that is independent research, not proof that Valve uses the method.

“Input patterns” can mean two different things

Questions about Counter-Strike anti-cheat often mix up two problems: detecting prohibited software or automated inputs, and inferring whether separate matches or accounts belong to the same person. Both can involve information related to mouse and keyboard use, but they are not the same task and do not lead to the same conclusion.

Mechanism What it examines What it may infer What public evidence establishes
VAC signature detection Known cheat software signatures on a user’s computer Presence of a known cheat Valve says VAC reliably detects cheats using their signatures. It does not publicly describe a raw mouse-trajectory classifier. Steam Support: Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) System
CS2 Trusted Mode Third-party files attempting to interact with or inject into the game process Prohibited or incompatible process interaction Valve says Trusted Mode is enabled by default and blocks third-party files from interacting with the game. Steam Support: Trusted Mode
Input-automation enforcement Certain automated movement or shooting inputs and multi-action binds Prohibited automation; an affected player may be kicked from an official match Valve announced this enforcement in CS2 release notes on August 19, 2024, without disclosing thresholds or exact input features. Counter-Strike 2 release notes
Behavioral fingerprinting research Mouse and keyboard signals recorded in CS2 demos Similarity between a player’s behavioral signals across demos A thesis author reports an account-linking research method. This is not documentation of a Valve anti-cheat feature. Thesis author’s summary

The important distinction is between a signal and the conclusion drawn from it. Similar play patterns might support a research claim that two demos resemble one another; that alone does not demonstrate cheating, prove two accounts belong to one person, or establish that Valve uses such a method.

It also helps to separate what is observed from what is inferred. A signature check concerns known software; Trusted Mode concerns interaction with the game process; the 2024 rule concerns certain kinds of automation; and the thesis concerns signals preserved in demos. A ban, match kick, identity match, or experimental research classification is a different kind of outcome. One should not be treated as automatic evidence for another.

What Valve has publicly confirmed

VAC and known cheat signatures

Steam Support describes VAC as an automated system designed to detect cheats installed on a user’s computer. Valve says VAC reliably detects cheats using their signatures. This is a public description of signature-based detection, not a complete technical account of VAC. It does not establish that VAC records every keystroke or classifies normal mouse movement to recognize an individual.

Trusted Mode and process interaction

Valve describes CS2 Trusted Mode as enabled by default. Its purpose is to block third-party files from interacting with the game; Valve’s support explanation notes that software can inject into a game process and that Trusted Mode rejects software that would normally do so. This concerns the game’s process integrity. It is different from deciding whether two players have similar behavioral fingerprints.

Input automation and official-match kicks

In its August 19, 2024 release notes, Valve said: “Certain types of movement/shooting input automation such as hardware-assisted counter strafing will now be detected on Valve official servers, resulting in a kick from the match.” The announcement also said input binds containing more than one command from a specified set would be ignored by default.

These statements confirm enforcement against some automation, but they do not explain the detector’s technical implementation. Valve did not publish the precise input features, thresholds, hardware signals, or model architecture involved. The announced consequence is a kick from the match; that statement should not be silently turned into a claim that every detected case results in a VAC ban.

The release-note wording is specific in another useful way: it names certain movement or shooting automation, with hardware-assisted counter-strafing as an example, and places the detection on Valve official servers. It does not publish a comprehensive list of every disallowed device or technique, nor does it define a general-purpose detector of human input style. The multi-action bind restriction is separately described as a default rule that ignores binds containing more than one command from a specified set. Readers should not infer the undisclosed command list or detector threshold from the announcement.

VacNet 3.0 testing

The same release notes said: “Initial testing of VacNet 3.0 has begun on a limited set of matches.” Valve did not describe the system’s inputs, performance, or relationship to the separate demo-fingerprinting thesis. The announcement is evidence of limited testing at that time, not a published accuracy figure or a specification of how mouse and keyboard patterns are used in production.

What the demo-fingerprinting thesis reports

A master’s student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology posted a summary of a thesis on behavioral biometrics in Counter-Strike. The author says a CS2 demo contains a tick-by-tick record of where players looked and which buttons they pressed. Their method extracts separate mouse and keyboard signals and compares compact fingerprints across demos. According to the author, it needs no client change, new telemetry, or kernel driver because it uses existing demos. These are the thesis author’s descriptions of the project, not Valve documentation.

The research question, as the author frames it, is whether a person’s way of using the keyboard and mouse is consistent and distinctive enough to recognize that player across demos. That is different from asking whether an input is automated or whether software on a computer matches a known cheat signature. The demo method described by the author uses recorded gameplay data to compare players; the public account does not establish a live client-side feature or a production anti-cheat pipeline.

Reported results and their limits

The author says the dataset included more than 1,000 players and reports that the mouse fingerprint identified the correct player every time in that dataset, while the keyboard fingerprint did so 98% of the time. The author also reports a 0.11 correlation between how similar stranger pairs appeared on mouse and keyboard signals, suggesting the signals may provide complementary information.

Those figures are results reported by the thesis author for that dataset. They are not independently established population-wide accuracy rates, and they are not measurements of VAC or VacNet. Tom’s Hardware’s summary notes the author’s characterization of the data as thin for representing CS2’s full player population; shared accounts are another stated limitation. A result on a particular dataset does not show how well a method would perform across all players, hardware, play styles, or account-sharing situations.

The low reported correlation is also a claim about the stranger pairs and data in this project, not proof that combining both signals will reliably identify everyone. Mouse and keyboard signals may provide different information in that dataset, but the author’s reported figures do not establish how a method would handle a larger or more varied player population. Nor do the results state a validated false-match rate for a live enforcement system.

Account linking is not cheat detection

The author describes linking accounts believed to belong to the same person, including accounts used as smurfs or after a ban, as a possible application. That is an identity-linking use, not a finding that the person cheated. A behavioral match between accounts cannot by itself establish a cheat violation, and it does not prove that Valve will transfer a ban or other sanction between accounts. The author says policy questions, such as whether linked bans should expire, are separate from the matching method.

This distinction matters because “who might be behind an account?” and “did this account use a cheat?” are separate questions. Even if an identity-linking technique correctly matched two demos, the match would not show what software was running, whether an input was automated, or whether a rule was violated. Turning a match into a sanction would require separate policy and evidentiary decisions; the thesis summary does not establish how a game operator should make them.

What other anti-cheat research can—and cannot—tell us

Behavioral detectors face adaptation

A 2020 paper by Witschel and Wressnegger, “Aim Low, Shoot High: Evading Aimbot Detectors by Mimicking User Behavior,” reports an adaptive aimbot experiment designed to gradually imitate user behavior. It evaluated two professional CS:GO players, two open-source anti-cheat systems, and the commercial combination of VAC, VACnet, and Overwatch. The study illustrates a general challenge: a detector that relies on behavioral regularities may face attempts to imitate legitimate play. Its setup and results do not measure the current CS2 system or reveal how Valve’s present detectors work. Read the paper

The useful takeaway is limited: behavioral cues can become an adversarial target. The experiment is not evidence that a particular CS2 detector uses a particular mouse or keyboard feature, and it does not tell readers how often a present-day system catches cheats. Its evaluated players, systems, and game context are part of the scope of that 2020 study.

Experimental model accuracy is not Valve-system accuracy

A 2025 AntiCheatPT preprint describes a transformer model trained on gameplay-derived data from 795 matches. Its authors report 89.17% test accuracy and a 93.36% area under the ROC curve (AUC) on their test set. These are experimental results for that model and dataset, not published VAC or VacNet performance figures. The paper also identifies closed commercial systems and limited labeled data as constraints on reproducible research. Read the AntiCheatPT preprint

Accuracy and AUC describe performance in the authors’ evaluation, not a guarantee for new matches or all player populations. The same caution applies to the thesis’s reported identification percentages: the tasks and datasets differ, and neither result can be substituted for a live Valve system’s detection rate. Valve has not published such a rate in the reviewed sources.

Across both examples, an experimental result answers a narrow question about a particular dataset, model, and evaluation. It should not be presented as the live detection rate of a commercial anti-cheat system.

What players can reasonably conclude

  • Some automation is explicitly against Valve’s stated rules. Valve announced detection and match kicks for certain movement or shooting automation on official servers.
  • Ordinary mouse and keyboard behavior is a separate question. Public Valve material cited here does not establish that VAC uses behavioral biometrics to identify players from normal input patterns.
  • Demo-based identity matching has been explored independently. A thesis author reports promising results on a dataset of more than 1,000 players, with stated limits that prevent treating those results as a population-wide guarantee.
  • Identity similarity is not proof of cheating. Matching accounts, detecting automation, detecting known software, and establishing a cheat violation are distinct decisions.
  • Live-system details remain undisclosed. The reviewed public Valve material does not specify mouse/keyboard classifier features, thresholds, model design, or an accuracy rate.

How Valve’s developer documentation fits

Steamworks documentation says cheat detection is performed by the game developer or its agents and reported through ICheatReportingService. That is integration guidance for developers implementing game bans; it is not a technical explanation of CS2’s internal anti-cheat or evidence about mouse-and-keyboard behavioral classification. Frequently Asked Questions

Can CS2 tell who I am from how I move my mouse and press keys?

An independent thesis author reports identifying players across CS2 demos using separate mouse and keyboard signals. Valve has not publicly confirmed that VAC or VacNet uses this method to identify players, so the thesis is not evidence of a Valve feature.

Does VAC read every keystroke?

The reviewed Valve materials describe VAC as detecting known cheats using signatures. They do not say VAC reads every keystroke or classifies ordinary mouse movements to identify a player.

What happens if CS2 detects input automation?

Valve’s August 19, 2024 release notes say certain movement or shooting automation, including hardware-assisted counter-strafing, can be detected on official servers and result in a match kick. The announcement does not say every such case results in a VAC ban.

Does the thesis show that smurf accounts will be banned?

No. The author describes account linking, including possible identification of smurf or post-ban accounts, as an application of the research. Matching accounts does not itself prove cheating or establish that Valve transfers sanctions between accounts.

How reliable is the reported 100% mouse identification result?

It is the thesis author’s reported result for a dataset of more than 1,000 players, not an independently validated or population-wide production accuracy rate. The author and reporting note limitations including thin representation of CS2’s full population and shared accounts.

Is VacNet 3.0 a mouse-and-keyboard fingerprinting system?

Valve’s August 2024 release notes announced initial testing on a limited set of matches but did not describe VacNet 3.0’s inputs or its relationship to demo fingerprinting. Public materials reviewed here do not establish that it identifies players from behavioral fingerprints.

The Bottom Line

Valve has confirmed detection of some input automation and has described VAC signature detection and Trusted Mode’s process restrictions. It has not publicly disclosed a system that identifies players by their ordinary mouse and keyboard habits. Independent research suggests demo-based behavioral matching is possible in a particular dataset, but that is not proof of Valve adoption, population-wide accuracy, or cheating.
