An experiment on formic acid used an intense circularly polarised laser to turn molecular fragmentation into a geometry probe. The starting molecule is planar and achiral, yet the directions of the ions in the resulting Coulomb explosion were consistent with the molecule briefly bending into one of two mirror-image, chiral shapes. The bending was not photographed directly: it was the interpretation reported for measured fragment momenta.
Cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) supplied the crucial information. By recording where the charged fragments flew and comparing those directions with the molecule’s orientation and the rotating electric field, the team inferred when hydrogen had moved out of the original molecular plane. The handedness of circular polarisation biased which mirror-image geometry appeared in the data.
What the experiment actually demonstrated
The study, reported by Chemistry World in 2019 and attributed to K. Fehre and colleagues in Science Advances (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aau7923), did not start with a chiral molecule. It used formic acid, whose equilibrium structure is planar and therefore has no permanent handedness. The study asked whether a strong, rotating electric field could drive the molecule into a short-lived geometry that is chiral before the molecule breaks apart.
The answer came indirectly. A laser pulse removed several electrons from each molecule. The remaining positively charged pieces repelled one another and separated rapidly. Their flight directions, measured one event at a time, carried information about the arrangement of atoms immediately before the breakup. At selected molecular orientations, the hydrogen ion did not behave as expected for a strictly planar structure. Its direction indicated displacement above or below that plane. Those patterns were interpreted as evidence that formic acid had transiently adopted a bent geometry with two possible mirror images.

This distinction matters: the direct result is a set of orientation-dependent ion directions. “A transient chiral form” is the structural explanation proposed for those observations, not a directly imaged intermediate.
Why planar formic acid is a useful test case
Achiral starting geometry
Chirality means that a structure and its mirror image cannot be superimposed by ordinary rotations. A flat formic-acid molecule has a mirror relationship that makes the two sides equivalent, so the unperturbed molecule is achiral. If one atom is pushed out of the plane in a suitable way, that symmetry can disappear. The resulting shape can have a left-handed and a right-handed version even though the original molecule did not.
A minimal structural change
Using a small molecule makes the geometry easier to reconstruct. The experiment did not need to identify a complicated reaction mixture or separate stable enantiomers. Instead, it examined whether the positions implied by fragment trajectories were compatible with an out-of-plane displacement during the laser interaction. Formic acid therefore served as a clean system for asking how light can break an initially symmetric arrangement.

The method relies on electrostatic repulsion. The laser field strips several electrons from a molecule, leaving a multiply charged molecular ion. Once several positively charged fragments are created, each fragment feels repulsion from the others. The molecule flies apart, in the words of Markus Schöffler, “like a firework, because positively charged ions repel.”
The breakup is useful because the fragments retain a directional memory of the nuclear arrangement at ionisation. A simplified sequence is:

- Ionisation: an intense laser pulse removes multiple electrons from a formic-acid molecule.
- Charge separation: the molecule contains positively charged atomic or molecular fragments.
- Coulomb repulsion: those charges accelerate away from one another.
- Momentum measurement: detectors record each ion’s arrival position and flight information.
- Geometry reconstruction: the correlated directions are compared with the molecular orientation and laser polarisation.
The technique does not literally freeze the molecule and take a conventional photograph. It uses a physical model of charged-particle repulsion to relate final momenta to the configuration at the instant of explosion. The closer the breakup approximates a rapid, predominantly Coulombic separation, the more directly the directions report the preceding geometry; the detailed reconstruction still depends on the experiment’s modelling and event selection.
What COLTRIMS contributes
Cold target recoil ion momentum spectroscopy is designed to measure correlated charged particles from a single reaction. In this experiment, a cold jet supplied isolated formic-acid molecules to the laser focus. COLTRIMS recorded the recoil ions and their momenta, allowing the researchers to determine relative directions rather than merely counting how many fragments appeared.

A detector registering a hydrogen ion alone would not reveal whether the parent molecule was flat or bent. A correlated measurement of hydrogen and the other fragments can show whether the hydrogen momentum lies in the plane defined by the heavier pieces, or whether it points consistently to one side. Repeating the measurement while changing the molecule’s orientation relative to the light then tests whether the pattern is tied to the field rather than being a random broadening.
From ion directions to a proposed chiral structure
| Part of the result | What was measured or inferred |
|---|---|
| Ion-fragment directions | Measured recoil directions and momenta from the Coulomb explosion. |
| Molecular orientation | The relationship between those directions, the molecular plane and the direction of the incoming laser. |
| Out-of-plane hydrogen motion | An angular pattern indicating that hydrogen was displaced from a strictly planar arrangement at particular orientations. |
| Transient chirality | The reported interpretation: the molecule briefly bent into one of two mirror-image geometries before fragmenting. |
| Light-controlled handedness | The reported dependence of the preferred mirror image on the rotation sense of circularly polarised light. |
The table separates evidence from interpretation. The first three rows describe observables or direct geometric relationships extracted from them. The final two rows are the structural and mechanistic conclusions drawn from those observations.
Why the molecule’s angle to the beam matters
The effect was not equally visible for every orientation. Schöffler explained that “when the molecule is tilted by a few degrees with respect to the light, you make predominantly left-handed or right-handed fragments.” In practical terms, the experiment selected events in which the molecular axis or plane had a particular relationship to the laser propagation and polarisation directions.

A small tilt changes how the rotating electric field acts on the molecule’s electrons and nuclei. It also changes the three-dimensional projection of the eventual ion momenta onto the detector. The analysis therefore had to account for both the physical interaction and the geometry of observation. The reported handedness is an orientation-dependent preference, not a claim that every molecule in the jet became the same enantiomer.

In circularly polarised light, the electric-field vector rotates as the wave passes. Reversing the sense of that rotation reverses the field’s handedness. The report says that this rotation sense influenced which of the two mirror-image fragment geometries was observed preferentially.
This is the central “laser-driven” aspect of the result. The light was not merely supplying enough energy to break chemical bonds. Its rotating field provided a directional, handed interaction with a molecule that began without a preferred left or right form. When the molecule was oriented appropriately, the field could bias the sign of the out-of-plane displacement inferred from the fragments.
The observation is best described as symmetry breaking under driven, oriented conditions. Circular polarisation alone does not remove every symmetry in the apparatus: the molecular angle, the laboratory axes and the detection geometry all matter. The reported selectivity emerged from their combination.
How to read the phrase “laser-driven chirality”
The phrase does not mean that the experiment isolated a bottle of stable chiral formic acid. It describes a light-induced, short-lived structural asymmetry associated with the strong-field interaction. The molecule was ionised and exploded during the same overall event, so the proposed chiral geometry existed only long enough to influence the fragment momenta.

Nor does the phrase mean that the detector directly distinguished a left-handed molecule from a right-handed one before breakup. The detector measured charged-particle trajectories. The analysis assigned those trajectories to mirror-image parent geometries by reconstructing the three-dimensional arrangement and comparing how the pattern changed with the field’s rotation.
What the experiment does and does not establish
Established by the reported measurement
- Intense laser pulses produced multiply charged formic-acid molecules that fragmented through Coulomb repulsion.
- COLTRIMS measured correlated ion directions and their dependence on molecular orientation.
- At selected orientations, hydrogen trajectories were inconsistent with a purely planar interpretation and indicated an out-of-plane displacement.
- The preferred displacement changed with the handedness of the circularly polarised field, according to the report.
Not demonstrated by this result
- A stable, isolable chiral form of formic acid was not produced or collected.
- The experiment did not constitute a practical enantioselective synthesis process.
- The transient structure was inferred from fragment data rather than directly photographed.
- The result does not show that arbitrary molecules will become chiral under any circularly polarised beam.

Many photochemical reactions begin with molecules or ensembles that have equivalent mirror-related pathways. If a light field can favour one transient geometry, it may help explain how symmetry is broken during a reaction even when the starting material is achiral. Gang Zou of the University of Science and Technology of China described the result as “interesting and may be highly valuable for deeper understanding of symmetry breaking in photochemical reactions.”
One possible long-term implication is enantioselective synthesis: using light to favour one handed product over its mirror image. The present experiment is a mechanistic clue rather than a synthesis recipe. A useful chemical process would need to steer a reaction toward a persistent product, not simply bias the geometry of a molecule that is about to disintegrate.
Why turning the observation into a synthesis method is difficult
The reported setup imposes demanding conditions. Molecules must be prepared in a suitable orientation, exposed to a very intense field and detected with enough angular resolution to separate a small out-of-plane effect from instrumental and dynamical broadening. The selectivity is also tied to the relationship between the molecular orientation and the rotating field. A randomly oriented sample would mix many geometries and could wash out the preference.

There is a further chemical challenge: Coulomb explosion is deliberately destructive. The process creates charged fragments instead of preserving the parent molecule. To use a similar principle for synthesis, researchers would need to control the light-induced distortion while allowing a subsequent reaction or relaxation pathway to produce a stable compound.
The reported pulse rate
The Chemistry World report described a rate of 100,000 intense laser pulses per second. That figure is a pulse rate reported in the 2019 article; no independent check of the value is provided, and it should not be read as a universal specification for Coulomb-explosion experiments. Pulse rate affects how quickly data can be accumulated, while the ability to resolve the molecular geometry depends on intensity, polarisation control, target preparation and detector performance.
A compact mental model
Imagine a flat molecular triangle viewed edge-on and then charged at several points. If all atoms began and remained in one plane, the recoil directions would preserve that planar relationship. If the hydrogen atom shifted slightly toward one side before the charges flew apart, the hydrogen momentum would acquire a corresponding out-of-plane component. Reversing the shift would create the mirror-image pattern. Circular polarisation supplied the field-handedness that biased which shift occurred for a selected molecular tilt.

That picture captures the logic without implying more precision than the measurement provides: trajectories are the data, Coulomb-repulsion modelling connects trajectories to structure, and transient chirality is the interpretation that best accounts for the orientation- and polarisation-dependent pattern reported by the researchers.
