No technology has yet made drinkable water on the Moon. NASA and its partners are developing the steps that could make it possible: locating water-bearing lunar soil, excavating it, capturing the water, removing dust and other compounds, and treating the result for a specific use. Those steps have been tested only in limited Earth-based demonstrations or remain under development—not as a complete lunar water plant.
What “making Moon water drinkable” actually means
Lunar water extraction and water purification are separate jobs. Extraction means finding and accessing water-bearing material, then collecting water from it. Purification means removing dust and unwanted compounds and meeting the quality standard required for the next use.
That distinction matters because water suitable for one purpose is not automatically safe to drink or suitable for another. For example, NASA’s technical assessment discusses the stringent feed-water specification for a particular type of electrolyzer; it does not report that water extracted from the Moon has been tested for human consumption.

How a lunar water system could work
- Locate and measure the resource. Missions must determine where water is, how much is present, and how it is mixed into the soil. NASA’s PRIME-1 prospecting system illustrates this step: its TRIDENT drill brings samples to the surface, while the MSolo instrument checks for water and other volatile emissions. PRIME-1 is a resource-measurement effort, not a water plant. NASA’s explanation of lunar water extraction describes the project.
- Excavate or drill icy regolith. A future system would collect water-bearing material, potentially in a permanently shadowed area. NASA’s ISRU overview includes drilling and excavation among the approaches for accessing lunar resources.
- Release and capture the water-bearing mixture. Processing must collect water while dealing with dust and other volatile compounds. The exact equipment depends on the extraction architecture and where processing can be performed.
- Separate water from dust and other compounds. A NASA technical assessment describes freeze distillation to separate water from other volatiles and sub-micronic filtration to reduce dust. These are processing steps, not evidence of a complete operational system on the Moon.
- Condition the water for its intended use. Treatment requirements depend on whether the water is intended for life support, drinking, or a downstream process such as electrolysis. A system would need to verify that its output meets the appropriate specification.
- Use the water—or split it into gases. Water could support life-support needs. Electrolysis instead separates water into hydrogen and oxygen, useful as commodities for exploration but no longer drinkable water. NASA’s IHOP project was intended to integrate water purification with hydrogen-and-oxygen production components.
NASA’s Technology Assessment for Producing Propellant From Lunar Water explains why the purification stage varies with the downstream equipment. In the assessment, a proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) electrolyzer requires ultrapure, deionized feed water with resistivity greater than 10 megaohm-centimeters. The assessment describes deionization as an additional treatment after freeze distillation and filtration.
What is unusual about the proposed extraction methods?
One concept, Aqua Factorem, proposes sorting frozen ice grains from surrounding minerals rather than heating the soil until ice sublimates. Its premise is to treat ice as a grain that can be separated mechanically, avoiding a phase change. NASA presents it as a concept, and its stated energy reduction is an estimate—not a measured result from an operating lunar system. NASA’s Aqua Factorem article describes the proposal.

Another element is ICICLE, a cold-trap concept intended to collect water from sublimation-mining or filtration architectures while rejecting other volatile gases. NASA TechPort marks the project completed, but that status does not mean the equipment has been deployed or shown to operate on the Moon. NASA TechPort’s ICICLE record provides the project description and status.
These concepts address different parts of the challenge. Grain sorting aims to separate solid ice from minerals; freeze distillation and cold-trap approaches concern capturing or separating vapor and other volatiles. The available sources do not establish a validated head-to-head winner under lunar conditions.

How close is the technology to producing water on the Moon?
The key gap is integration under realistic conditions. NASA says past ISRU analog tests have validated hardware and concepts for short periods in Earth environments. Higher production rates, simulated space conditions, and long mission durations remain development needs.
NASA’s February 13, 2026 update for the IHOP project says the planned long-duration integrated test of lunar-water purification and electrolysis was not achieved during the project option period. The update reports an Ionomer-membrane Water Processor at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 and a water electrolyzer at TRL 4; the electrolyzer did not reach its planned TRL 5.

That project page lists target production metrics of 1.34 kg/hour of water, 0.14 kg/hour of hydrogen, and 1.16 kg/hour of oxygen. They are project targets, not demonstrated production rates on the Moon. NASA TechPort’s IHOP update provides the status and targets.
Prospecting, extraction, purification, and verification all have to work together before astronauts could rely on lunar water. NASA’s lunar surface technology overview describes the broader technology-development context; it does not establish that drinkable water is currently being produced on the lunar surface.

What this means for astronauts
Local water could reduce the need to carry every kilogram of water from Earth, but that benefit depends on finding accessible deposits and operating a dependable extraction and treatment chain. Water could also be processed into hydrogen and oxygen for other exploration needs. Those possibilities are not the same as a verified drinking-water supply: the available NASA sources do not report human consumption testing of lunar-derived water.
