AI could eventually lift productivity and expand the economy’s supply of goods and services, easing inflation. But investment and demand may rise before those productivity gains show up in the data. That timing tension—not a confirmed speech titled “Monetary Policy in the Age of AI”—is the clearest way to understand the issue. The Federal Reserve’s official 2026 speech archive does not list a Christopher J. Waller speech with that title, so arguments from other officials should not be attributed to him.
Why AI could matter to monetary policy
Monetary policy affects borrowing costs and overall demand. AI matters to that policy debate if it changes how much the economy can produce, how quickly businesses invest and expand, or how much households and firms spend. Those effects may arrive at different times, leaving policymakers to assess present inflation pressures while the scale and timing of future productivity gains remain uncertain.
How AI could ease inflation over time
If businesses use AI to produce more output with the same amount of labor and other inputs, productivity rises. Greater productivity can expand aggregate supply: more goods and services are available relative to demand, potentially reducing price pressure. The effect depends on whether AI adoption translates into broad, lasting improvements in production rather than isolated efficiencies or expectations of future gains.
In remarks on May 28, 2026, Alberto Musalem, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, said: “To date, the data are inconclusive about aggregate productivity being in a sustained higher growth regime.” That is Musalem’s assessment, not a statement by Waller. It cautions against treating anticipated AI productivity as an established, economy-wide trend.

Why AI expectations could increase demand first
Productivity gains are not the only possible economic effect. Musalem described how expectations of future AI-related gains can affect current activity through investment and wealth effects. Businesses may spend now to build or adopt AI capabilities; rising expectations about future returns may also support wealth and spending. If demand increases before productive capacity does, the near-term effect could add to inflation pressure rather than relieve it.

The policy problem is judging the timing
For monetary policymakers, the central question is not simply whether AI will eventually make the economy more productive. It is whether current demand and inflation are rising before additional supply appears, and how much confidence to place in future gains that remain uncertain. Tightening policy in response to current pressure could restrain demand; assuming future productivity will quickly ease inflation could leave current pressure insufficiently addressed.

Musalem said it would be risky, in the circumstances he described, to rely on future productivity growth to solve current inflation. This is Musalem’s view, not a verified Waller position or a conclusion established by a speech under the supplied title. The distinction matters: an economic mechanism can be relevant to policy without proving that a particular official endorsed a specific interpretation.

The Federal Reserve Board’s 2026 speech archive lists related remarks by Waller, including “Operationalizing AI at the Federal Reserve” on February 24, 2026, but does not list “Monetary Policy in the Age of AI.” A secondary bibliographic record of Christopher Waller likewise lists AI and monetary-policy talks separately; it does not establish the supplied wording as a published speech title.

The available information therefore does not establish the event, date, venue, text, or argument behind the exact title “Fed’s Waller on Monetary Policy in the Age of AI.” It may be an editorial heading, but without the original speech text that possibility cannot be confirmed. Musalem’s remarks offer relevant Federal Reserve context, not evidence of what Waller said.

Musalem reported that 86% of St. Louis Fed staff had been trained to use AI and 77% used an approved AI tool in their work. Both figures describe staff at that Reserve Bank, as reported in 2026; they are not measures of AI adoption across the U.S. workforce or economy, nor do they establish an economy-wide productivity effect.
