Costco’s U.S. policy combines a broad satisfaction guarantee with important category exceptions. Costco says it will cancel and refund a dissatisfied member’s membership fee at any time. For merchandise, it promises a refund of the purchase price under its satisfaction guarantee, but the promise is subject to listed exceptions, product limits, local law, and separate category procedures. The most important deadline is 90 days from receipt for specified electronics and major appliances.
This guide explains how to identify the rule that applies to your purchase, what to bring to a warehouse return, and when a return is different from a warranty claim. Costco’s customer-service pages cited here were published between June 2025 and March 2026; confirm the current instructions and local requirements for a particular transaction.
The short answer: start with the item category
There is no single deadline that applies to every Costco purchase. First identify whether the item is ordinary merchandise, one of the devices subject to the 90-day rule, a listed major appliance, alcohol or tobacco, or a category with special handling. Then determine whether the purchase was made at a warehouse or through another Costco channel and, for time-limited items, establish the date you received it.
- Membership fee: Costco says a dissatisfied member can cancel and receive a refund at any time.
- Most merchandise: Costco describes a Risk-Free 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and a refund of the purchase price, subject to the policy’s exceptions and limitations.
- Specified devices and appliances: the return period is 90 days from the date you received the merchandise.
- Warehouse purchases: take the item to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse. A receipt or original packaging can help, but Costco says either may not be necessary.
- Alcohol and other restricted categories: state law, product type, and local warehouse instructions can control the outcome.
Do not treat the general guarantee as an unconditional promise that every item can be returned at any time. The exceptions are part of the policy, not footnotes that can be ignored.

What Costco’s general satisfaction guarantee covers
Costco’s general policy states that it guarantees satisfaction on every product it sells and will refund the purchase price, followed by a list of exceptions. In practical terms, that means a member who is dissatisfied should begin by checking the item-specific rule rather than assuming a universal deadline or universal eligibility.
The membership portion is stated separately: Costco says it will cancel and refund a membership fee at any time if the member is dissatisfied. That is a membership remedy, not a rule that overrides restrictions on particular merchandise.
For merchandise, keep three qualifications in view:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The policy has exceptions. Certain goods are non-refundable, subject to special conditions, or governed by another department or process.
- Some products have a firm 90-day window. The clock for the specified electronics and appliances begins when the member receives the item, not simply when an order is placed.
- Local law can change the practical answer. Alcohol is the clearest example, because state rules differ and Costco directs members to their local warehouse for the applicable process.
The 90-day rule for specified electronics and devices
Costco lists a defined group of electronics and devices that may be returned within 90 days of receipt. The list is narrower than the everyday meaning of “electronics,” so do not extend the deadline to every item that uses electricity or contains a circuit board.
| Category named by Costco | Return period | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Televisions | 90 days from receipt | Applies to the category named in Costco’s policy |
| Projectors | 90 days from receipt | Use the date the member received the merchandise |
| Specified major appliances | 90 days from receipt | The dedicated appliance list defines which appliances are included |
| Computers | 90 days from receipt | Do not assume unrelated accessories share the same rule |
| Touchscreen tablets | 90 days from receipt | The policy names touchscreen tablets specifically |
| Smart wearable devices | 90 days from receipt | Use Costco’s category wording when checking eligibility |
| Cameras | 90 days from receipt | Still subject to the policy’s other limitations |
| Aerial cameras (drones) | 90 days from receipt | Listed separately in the device exceptions |
| Camcorders | 90 days from receipt | Count from receipt, not order date |
| MP3 players | 90 days from receipt | Named even though the category is older technology |
| Cellular phones | 90 days from receipt | Return details vary according to the carrier service contract |
How to calculate the deadline
Use the date the merchandise came into your possession. For example, if a listed device was received on April 10, the relevant 90-day period is measured from April 10. Save delivery records or other evidence of receipt when the date could be disputed. The policy does not say that the period starts on the date an order was submitted.

Why the device list matters
A laptop, television, or camera clearly falls within the named categories. A different electronic product may not. If your item is not expressly listed, check Costco’s current policy or ask the warehouse before relying on the 90-day deadline. Treating “electronic” as a catch-all can cause you to miss the rule that actually applies.
Cellular-phone contracts require an extra check
Costco’s policy says cellular-phone return details vary by carrier service contract. The 90-day merchandise language therefore does not answer every service, activation, cancellation, or restocking question that a carrier agreement may create. Review the carrier terms connected to the purchase before returning a phone.

Major appliances: a 90-day return window and a separate warranty
Costco’s dedicated major-appliance page lists the products covered by its 90-day return period. The listed categories are refrigerators over 10 cubic feet, water heaters, washers, dryers, dishwashers, freezers, ranges, cooktops, and over-the-range microwaves. For each, the 90 days are measured after receipt.
The appliance page also describes a separate warranty arrangement. Costco says the manufacturer’s warranty is extended to two years for the listed appliances and that Costco Technical & Warranty Services provides warranty assistance. The second-year coverage mirrors the manufacturer’s warranty. Costco may satisfy its second-year obligation through repair, replacement, or a refund up to the purchase price, subject to the stated terms.
Do not confuse a return with a warranty claim
A return asks Costco to take back merchandise under the return policy. A warranty claim addresses a covered defect or failure under the manufacturer’s warranty and its extension. A product can be outside the 90-day return period yet still have warranty coverage, or it can be within 90 days while the member is simply dissatisfied rather than reporting a defect. Choose the path that matches the problem and keep the two clocks separate.

- Calculate 90 days from the date received.
- Gather delivery or purchase details and any relevant documentation.
- If the problem is a defect and the return window has passed, ask about the two-year warranty assistance instead of assuming the return deadline controls.
How to return a warehouse purchase
For products bought at a Costco location, Costco’s warehouse-return guidance gives a straightforward first step: take the item to the returns counter at any Costco warehouse. The guidance says a receipt or original product packaging helps, but may not be necessary to process the return.
- Classify the item. Check whether it is a listed device, major appliance, alcohol, tobacco, or another special category before traveling to the warehouse.
- Check the relevant clock. For the 90-day categories, count from receipt. For an ordinary item, review the general guarantee and its exceptions rather than inventing a deadline.
- Collect supporting material. Bring the receipt and original packaging when available. They can make identification and processing easier, but Costco says they may not be required.
- Take the product to a returns counter. Costco says a warehouse purchase should be returned at the returns counter at any Costco warehouse.
- Explain the transaction accurately. State whether the issue is dissatisfaction, damage, a defect, or a contract-related problem. That helps staff apply a return rule or direct you to warranty or category-specific support.
- Follow any product-specific instructions. Costco’s general guidance warns that some products have a 90-day limit and that several categories use separate departments or rules.
The guidance does not say that a receipt is always mandatory, and it does not say that packaging is always required. Bring both when possible, but do not delay a time-limited return solely because one is missing; ask the returns counter how Costco can verify the transaction.
Alcohol, cigarettes, and other categories with special conditions
Alcohol
Costco’s general policy says it does not accept returns of cigarettes or alcohol where prohibited by law. Its dedicated alcohol guidance emphasizes that state laws differ and directs members to check with the local warehouse to find out whether and how an alcohol return may be made. There is no nationwide answer that safely replaces that local-law check.
Cigarettes
Cigarette returns are also subject to the legal restriction in Costco’s general policy. Because the policy language is tied to what the law permits, ask the warehouse about the rule in the state where the transaction occurred.
Large diamonds and custom products
Large diamonds and custom products manufactured to personal specifications appear among the categories with special conditions or non-refundable status. A personalized item should not be treated like ordinary stock merchandise; verify the product-specific terms before purchase or before assuming a return is available.

Event-related items, precious metals, cards, and tickets
Airline and live-performance event items, precious metals, Shop Cards, gift cards, and tickets are also identified as categories with special conditions or non-refundable status. These items can involve an event date, a monetary instrument, or a market-sensitive product, so the ordinary merchandise guarantee does not provide a sufficient answer by itself.
Tires and batteries
Costco identifies tires and batteries as products with limited useful life that may have product-specific limited warranties. The relevant remedy may therefore be a warranty adjustment or replacement under product terms rather than an open-ended return.
Contact lenses, eyeglasses, freight deliveries, and hearing aids
For contact lenses, eyeglasses, freight-delivered items, and hearing aids, Costco directs members to separate category-specific guidance or departments. Use that dedicated channel instead of assuming the warehouse returns counter can apply the entire process.

Examples of how the rules apply
A television received 45 days ago
A television is one of the specified devices. Because the member received it 45 days ago, it remains within the stated 90-day period, subject to the policy’s other limitations. Take it to the warehouse returns counter and bring the receipt and packaging if available.

A washer received four months ago with a mechanical failure
A washer is a listed major appliance, so the 90-day return period has passed after four months. The appliance page separately describes two-year manufacturer-warranty coverage and Costco Technical & Warranty Services. The member should pursue warranty assistance rather than assume the ordinary return window still applies.
An alcohol purchase in a state with restrictive rules
The general guarantee does not settle the question. State law controls what Costco may accept, and Costco directs the member to the local warehouse for the applicable procedure.
A missing receipt for an ordinary warehouse item
Costco says a receipt can help but may not be necessary to process a warehouse return. Bring the item to the returns counter; staff can explain what verification is possible. Do not represent the receipt guidance as a guarantee that every transaction can be located without documentation.
Key pitfalls to avoid
- Assuming every Costco purchase has a lifetime return period.
- Applying the 90-day rule to every electronic product instead of the categories Costco names.
- Counting 90 days from the order date rather than the receipt date.
- Confusing a major-appliance return with the separate two-year warranty extension.
- Assuming alcohol returns work the same way in every state.
- Leaving the receipt or packaging at home when either is readily available.
- Using the general warehouse counter for a category that Costco directs to a specialized department.
