Cordless power tools have advanced through the combined design of battery packs, motors, electronics and tool platforms—not through voltage alone. That coordination can support higher output and a wider range of equipment, but a manufacturer’s specification is not the same as an independent test. To compare systems, match the tool and battery to your application, then check performance evidence and compatibility.
What is changing in cordless power tools?
The main shift is from treating a cordless tool as a motor attached to a battery to treating it as a coordinated system. The pack supplies energy, the motor converts it into mechanical work, and electronics help manage how the tool and battery operate together. Tool design determines how that power is delivered for a particular job.
Manufacturers describe this system-level approach in different ways. Milwaukee identifies battery-pack technology, motors and tool electronics as parts of its cordless ecosystem. Makita likewise presents motors, batteries and communications as coordinated technologies. These descriptions explain the platforms’ design approach; they do not establish a neutral ranking of brands.
How do battery platforms affect power and compatibility?
Lithium-ion battery systems helped make broad cordless tool ranges practical. Today, platform design matters for both performance and the ability to expand a collection of tools. Battery capacity, pack design, electronics and the tool itself all affect how a system performs; voltage by itself is not a complete comparison.

Platforms are proprietary, not universal battery standards. Makita describes LXT as an 18V slide-style battery system and XGT as a 40V/80V max system. DEWALT says its FLEXVOLT batteries can be used with specified 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools. Those labels do not mean that packs from different manufacturers—or every pack within a brand—are interchangeable. Check the exact tool model, battery family and regional version before buying.
Catalog size can indicate the breadth a manufacturer reports for a platform, but it does not measure tool quality or performance. Makita U.S.A. describes LXT as having “350+ products” on its current cordless page. DEWALT’s page describes its 20V MAX line as having “250+ Products”; that is a current page claim, not a dated market statistic.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
What do brushless motors and electronics contribute?
Brushless motors
Brushless motors are a prominent feature of current cordless tool systems. Makita’s company history lists an 18V brushless motor impact driver in 2009 as one of its milestones, while Milwaukee describes its POWERSTATE brushless motors as purpose-built for tool demands. Bosch Professional also describes brushless technology within its 18V system.
These are manufacturer descriptions, not a common independent comparison. The sources do not establish a universal efficiency, runtime or lifespan advantage for every brushless tool in every application. Evaluate the specific tool and its performance evidence rather than treating the motor label as a guarantee.

Electronics and system coordination
Electronics form part of the tool-and-battery system, rather than an optional extra to the motor. Milwaukee’s MX FUEL materials, for example, identify motor, intelligence/control and battery technologies as platform elements. That supports viewing control and coordination as part of system design, but it does not justify assuming a specific proprietary feature unless the product information names it.
Are cordless tools as powerful as corded tools?
There is no single answer for every tool and task. The relevant comparison depends on the exact cordless tool, its battery, the work being done and the test conditions. A manufacturer specification can be useful for understanding a product’s stated capability, but it is not an independent head-to-head result or proof that all tools on a given voltage platform match corded tools.

Bosch Professional says its BITURBO tools can deliver “up to 2,000 W” when paired with a ProCORE18V battery rated at least 5.5Ah. That is a Bosch claim tied to that specified tool-and-battery pairing. The Bosch page is regional, so product availability and wording may vary by country.
How are cordless platforms moving into equipment?
Cordless systems are extending beyond familiar handheld tools. Milwaukee positions MX FUEL as a platform for equipment. In a January 20, 2026 announcement, Makita described a 40V max XGT Motor Unit intended for OEM integration as a replacement for gas engines in applications including power screeds, backpack vibrators, power trowels, winches and water pumps.

- This CRAFTSMAN V20 Lithium 7 tool Combo kit provides the tools, batteries, charger, and accessories needed to get any job done
- Part of the V20 cordless system
- 20V MAX 1/2 inch cordless drill with powerful motor provides 280 UWO of power and 2 speed gearbox ranging from 0 to 400 RPM and 0-1, 500 RPM for demanding tasks

The announcement frames the motor unit as a way for equipment makers to use the XGT battery ecosystem. Makita’s release says: “Remove the gas engine, bolt on a Makita-powered motor, and instantly gain access to the same battery platform that powers over 170 XGT® tools and equipment.” This is promotional wording from the company, not an independently verified performance or adoption claim.
How should you compare cordless systems for a job?
- Start with the application. Identify whether you need a tool for light assembly, cutting, drilling, concrete work or equipment use. Compare tools in the same class and intended workload.
- Look for relevant performance evidence. For a fair comparison, check whether figures come from comparable tests and whether they identify the tool, battery, load and conditions. Keep manufacturer claims distinct from independent test results.
- Consider battery capacity, weight and charging together. More capacity may suit longer work, but pack size and weight can affect handling. The manufacturer pages cited here do not provide a neutral cross-brand comparison of these trade-offs.
- Check platform compatibility. Confirm which tools use the same battery family and verify compatibility for the exact model and regional version. Do not assume that similar voltage labels mean packs are interchangeable.
- Assess handling for the task. Tool size and balance matter alongside output. Bosch Professional, for example, presents compact 12V options for lighter or overhead work; that is a product-positioning example, not a universal rule about what tool you should choose.
What the manufacturers’ timelines show
Makita’s cordless overview lists 1978 for its first cordless tool, 2005 for its 18V LXT lithium-ion system, 2009 for an 18V brushless impact driver and 2012 for a cordless tool powered by two 18V batteries. These are Makita’s own historical milestones and should be read as company claims, not independently assessed “first” claims. The broader point is that cordless development has involved changes to batteries, motors and tool architectures over time, rather than one breakthrough alone.
The examples here establish how manufacturers describe their current platforms and features. They do not provide independent, market-wide measurements of runtime, efficiency, durability or comparative performance, so no brand can be named a universal winner on this evidence.
