Yes—many shoppers are beginning with a conversation instead of a search box. They describe the outcome they want, the occasion, budget, constraints, or preferences in ordinary language. An AI assistant can then ask follow-up questions, combine product information, compare trade-offs, and in some services hand the shopper into checkout.

This is an early but important shift, not proof that chatbots have replaced search engines or marketplaces. Amazon already offers conversational, visual, and auditory shopping tools for finding, discovering, and evaluating products, while AWS markets a retailer-facing agentic assistant. Consumer studies show meaningful adoption, but the published performance figures use different methods and should not be treated as one universal benchmark.

What changes when shopping starts in a chat?

From keywords to outcomes

A keyword query usually makes the shopper translate a need into product terminology: “waterproof hiking shoes,” “quiet blender,” or “laptop under $900.” A conversational prompt can preserve the need in its original form: “I need shoes for a three-day hike in wet weather, with a wide toe box, under $150, and no leather.” The assistant can work with several constraints at once and ask which one matters most when they conflict.

That changes the first step from retrieval to clarification. Instead of returning a long list and leaving the shopper to filter it, the assistant can ask about fit, timing, compatibility, delivery location, return tolerance, or intended use. The result is closer to a guided buying conversation than to a static results page.

Interactive synthesis instead of one page of links

A shopping chat can summarize specifications, explain differences in plain language, identify missing information, and keep a running record of the shopper’s requirements. A useful answer might separate “best match,” “cheapest acceptable option,” and “most durable option,” explaining which constraint caused each recommendation. That synthesis is valuable when product pages use inconsistent names or bury important details in manuals and policy pages.

It also introduces a new failure mode: a fluent answer can sound certain even when the catalog, inventory, price, or policy data is incomplete. The quality of a shopping chat therefore depends on both the language model and the live product information behind it.

Evidence What was measured How to interpret it
Interactive Advertising Bureau and Talk Shoppe, 2025 More than 450 digital ethnographies and a survey of 600 U.S. consumers Documents how consumers are using AI during the shopping journey; it is not a global sales forecast.
AWS, 2026 page claim Conversational shopping sessions reported at 3.5 times the conversion rate of traditional keyword search A vendor-published comparison whose conditions and definition of “conversion” should be checked before applying it to another retailer.
McKinsey & Company, as cited in its agentic-commerce article Among people who had tried AI-powered search, 44% called it their primary and preferred source, compared with 31% preferring traditional search A preference result among AI-search users, not a measure of all shoppers or completed purchases.
Mastercard, 2024 Global social-commerce revenue projected to approach $700 billion in 2024 A comparison point for commerce conducted in social platforms; it is not a direct measure of AI-chat shopping.

The IAB’s Angelina Eng described the path to purchase as “not been linear for some time, but now it’s intelligent, conversational, and happening on demand.” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon similarly said that e-commerce experiences built around “a search bar and a long list of item responses” are about to change. Those statements describe the direction of product design, while the conversion and preference figures indicate that some users are already responding to it.

How a conversational shopping session works

  1. State the job to be done. Describe the occasion, user, environment, budget, timing, and non-negotiable constraints. “A gift for a 12-year-old who likes astronomy, under $60, deliverable next week” is more useful than “astronomy gift.”
  2. Answer clarifying questions. The assistant may ask about size, compatibility, materials, brand exclusions, delivery destination, or whether a lower price is worth giving up a feature. These answers narrow the search space.
  3. Review the shortlist and assumptions. Check that the assistant understood quantities, dimensions, operating systems, regional standards, and budget. Correcting one wrong assumption early is easier than fixing a purchase later.
  4. Compare trade-offs. Ask for a table of price, key specifications, warranty, delivery estimate, return terms, and unresolved uncertainties. Request separate choices for best fit, lowest cost, and highest durability when those goals differ.
  5. Open the underlying product pages. Verify current price, stock, seller identity, taxes, shipping, compatibility, and return conditions on the retailer’s page. A chat summary is a navigation aid, not a substitute for the contract of sale.
  6. Authorize any transaction explicitly. If the assistant supports checkout, review the exact item, quantity, address, payment method, recurring charges, and final total before confirming. Keep automatic purchasing disabled for expensive, regulated, personalized, or difficult-to-return goods.

Conversational discovery versus other shopping paths

Approach Strength Limitation or risk Best use
Keyword search Fast, familiar, and broad; the shopper controls the query terms and can scan many sellers. Requires the shopper to know the right vocabulary and manually reconcile specifications, stock, and policies. Well-known products, quick price checks, and broad market discovery.
Conversational discovery Handles natural-language goals, multiple constraints, follow-up questions, and explanations. Can misunderstand intent, omit products outside its connected catalog, or state stale information confidently. Complex needs, unfamiliar categories, gifts, compatibility questions, and comparison work.
First-party retailer assistant Usually has deeper access to that retailer’s catalog, inventory, fulfillment, loyalty account, and policies. Its recommendations may be limited to one retailer and may favor that retailer’s assortment. Shoppers who already know where they want to buy or need accurate local availability.
General-purpose AI assistant Can compare across sources and help formulate a need before the shopper chooses a retailer. Product feeds, prices, stock, seller quality, and checkout authority may be incomplete or delayed. Early research, category education, and cross-retailer shortlisting.
Recommendation-only chat Preserves a clear handoff: the shopper decides and completes checkout on the merchant site. More steps remain, and prices or stock can change between recommendation and checkout. High-consideration purchases and situations where independent verification matters.
Agentic checkout Can carry approved preferences into cart and payment, reducing repetitive steps. Errors become financial or logistical actions; mistaken quantity, address, subscription, or authorization can be costly. Routine, low-risk, clearly specified replenishment with strong confirmation controls.
Open product ecosystem Offers wider market coverage and the possibility of comparing competing sellers. Data quality, attribution, authenticity, and returns vary across merchants. Price-sensitive discovery and unusual products.
Retailer-specific catalog Consistent product data, fulfillment promises, customer records, and returns within one system. Less assortment and less visibility into alternatives elsewhere. Urgent delivery, repeat purchases, and catalog-specific products.

What Amazon and AWS demonstrate today

Amazon describes its shopping tools as helping customers “find, discover, and evaluate products.” Its approach combines conversational interaction with visual and auditory inputs, reflecting how people naturally shop rather than forcing every need into a short text query. The practical implication is not that every purchase happens inside a chat; it is that product discovery, explanation, and evaluation can happen in one continuing interaction.

AWS presents a retailer-facing agentic assistant designed to surface recommendations through dialogue and shorten the path from uncertain intent to a product choice. AWS reports a 3.5-times conversion rate for conversational shopping sessions versus traditional keyword search on a 2026 page. That number is promising, but it is a vendor claim with a methodology that may not match another retailer’s traffic, category mix, attribution window, or definition of conversion.

For retailers, these examples point to two distinct decisions: participate in external answer engines, build a first-party assistant, or do both; and decide how much authority the assistant receives after it recommends an item. A helpful recommendation layer can be deployed with less risk than an agent that changes a cart, applies a coupon, places an order, or starts a subscription.

Why shoppers find chat useful—and where it breaks

Convenience for complicated decisions

  • Natural expression: Shoppers can explain a situation, not just name a product.
  • Fewer research tasks: The assistant can normalize units, summarize manuals, and organize specifications into a comparison.
  • Personalized follow-up: It can ask only for information that is missing from the initial request.
  • Decision support: It can make trade-offs explicit instead of presenting dozens of nearly identical listings.

Accuracy and coverage problems

  • Stale facts: Prices, inventory, delivery windows, and promotions can change after an answer is generated.
  • Incomplete catalogs: A general assistant may not see every seller, regional listing, marketplace offer, or replacement part.
  • Ambiguous compatibility: A model number, connector, size, or regional standard can be misread, creating an expensive mismatch.
  • Uneven seller quality: A polished description does not establish authenticity, warranty support, or reliable returns.
  • Hidden commercial priorities: Ranking may reflect availability, advertising, commission, or retailer strategy rather than the shopper’s best value.

The safest habit is to ask the assistant to label assumptions and unknowns, then verify consequential details on the merchant’s current page. Confidence in wording is not evidence that a claim was checked.

Safety, consent, and control at checkout

Visa’s research finds that consumers want AI help with laborious comparison shopping while retaining oversight over consequential actions. That distinction is central. Delegating “find three compatible options” is materially different from delegating “buy whichever one the agent chooses.”

Controls a shopper should expect

  • Human confirmation: A clear approval step immediately before payment, not a vague permission granted days earlier.
  • Transaction limits: Maximum price, quantity, merchant, category, and frequency settings.
  • Change visibility: A notice when the price, seller, delivery date, shipping charge, or return policy differs from the recommendation.
  • Payment isolation: Tokenized payment credentials or a limited-use method rather than unrestricted access to a primary account.
  • Audit trail: A record of the prompt, recommendation, approvals, final cart, and receipt.
  • Easy cancellation: A way to stop pending actions and revoke the assistant’s authorization.

Do not allow unattended purchasing for products with safety implications, legal age limits, variable sizing, personalization, recurring billing, or difficult returns. For ordinary replenishment, an agent can be useful if the item identity and spending boundaries are fixed and every order generates an immediate notification.

What retailers must prepare

Retailers that wait for chat traffic to arrive may find that an assistant already controls the customer’s first impression. AWS frames the strategic choice as building a direct AI presence or risking dependence on general-purpose answer engines. Either path requires reliable information, not just a language model.

Product and policy data

  • Use stable product identifiers, variant-level attributes, dimensions, materials, compatibility, and safety information.
  • Keep price, stock, delivery estimates, promotions, warranty, and return rules current and region-specific.
  • Expose structured answers to common questions so an assistant can retrieve facts instead of guessing from marketing copy.
  • Represent substitutions and out-of-stock states explicitly; never imply that an unavailable variant is orderable.

Identity, payment, fraud, and returns

An agentic flow needs narrowly scoped identity and payment authorization, step-up verification for unusual behavior, duplicate-order detection, and fraud controls that do not assume a human is clicking every button. Returns must identify whether the assistant, retailer, marketplace seller, or payment provider owns each step. A frictionless purchase that produces an opaque dispute is not a successful customer experience.

Measurement and attribution

Retailers should distinguish assisted discovery, recommendation clicks, add-to-cart events, completed orders, cancellations, returns, and repeat purchases. A conversion lift can look impressive if returns or low-margin orders are excluded. The AWS figure and McKinsey preference result are not interchangeable benchmarks, so each retailer needs a documented baseline, attribution window, category mix, and treatment of cancellations.

Will chatbots replace Google or Amazon search?

Replacement is too broad a conclusion. Conversational interfaces are likely to become an additional starting point, especially when the shopper has a complicated goal or does not know the product vocabulary. Traditional search remains efficient for a known model, a nearby store, a specific retailer, a current deal, or a query where the user wants to inspect many independent sources.

Marketplaces and retailer sites also retain advantages that a general chat may not: live inventory, account history, fulfillment operations, seller ratings, payment credentials, and established return processes. The more a shopping task depends on those operational details, the more likely the chat experience will hand off to a marketplace or retailer rather than eliminate it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The likely pattern is a layered journey: a general assistant helps define the need, a retailer assistant narrows it using live catalog data, and the merchant or marketplace completes payment and fulfillment. Which layer owns the first interaction will vary by category, trust, urgency, and the quality of each product feed.

A practical checklist for using AI shopping assistants

  1. Write the constraints first: budget, deadline, location, dimensions, compatibility, accessibility needs, materials, and unacceptable trade-offs.
  2. Ask for evidence: request the source product page, the date checked, and a separate list of unknowns.
  3. Demand alternatives: ask for at least one lower-cost and one higher-durability option when those trade-offs matter.
  4. Verify the contract: inspect seller, stock, shipping, taxes, warranty, subscription terms, and returns before paying.
  5. Limit authority: use recommendation-only mode for high-value or unusual purchases; set caps and confirmations for routine orders.
  6. Keep records: save the final product page, order confirmation, and any assistant-generated comparison used to make the decision.

The bottom line

AI chats are becoming a new front door to online shopping because they let people describe an outcome and receive an interactive path to a choice. Evidence from consumer studies, retailer deployments, and vendor-reported performance supports real adoption, but it does not establish one universal conversion advantage or prove that search and marketplaces are disappearing. The winning experience will combine conversational guidance with current product data, transparent trade-offs, explicit human authorization, and a reliable handoff to payment, fulfillment, and returns.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
