A compatibility layer lets a game compiled for one operating system use another system’s services without rewriting the game or running a complete virtual machine. For Windows games on Linux, Wine and Proton provide Windows-compatible interfaces, while components such as DXVK and VKD3D-Proton translate Direct3D graphics calls to Vulkan. The Linux graphics driver and GPU then execute that work. The result is still a Windows program, but its requests are answered by a different operating system.
The short version: what happens when a Windows game runs on Linux
The game remains a Windows executable. A loader starts it, and compatibility libraries provide the Windows APIs that the executable expects. Those libraries connect Windows-style requests to Linux and other host facilities. Graphics usually pass through a second, specialized translation layer before reaching the host driver and GPU.
A simplified path looks like this:
Windows game → Windows-facing compatibility APIs (Wine or Proton) → graphics translation (DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, or WineD3D) → host graphics API and driver → GPU
This is a conceptual path, not a promise that every call follows exactly the same sequence. Games use many subsystems, and individual components can differ by title, Proton or Wine version, graphics API, driver, and hardware.

Compatibility layer, emulator, and virtual machine are different
Compatibility layer
A compatibility layer implements the interfaces a program expects and maps them to facilities available on the host. Wine’s model is to run Windows binaries while implementing Windows APIs with host equivalents, including POSIX services. The game’s machine code is not generally recompiled into native Linux code at launch, and the entire Windows operating system is not booted.
Emulator
An emulator reproduces another machine or processor environment, often interpreting or dynamically translating instructions from a different CPU or hardware design. That is a different problem from supplying Windows API behavior on a system that already uses a compatible processor architecture.
Virtual machine
A virtual machine runs a guest operating system inside a managed virtual computer. The guest supplies its own kernel and system services. A compatibility layer normally avoids that full guest operating system, which can reduce overhead and simplify integration, but it also means the layer must implement the particular Windows behavior that applications need.
These categories can overlap in practical systems, but calling every translation step “emulation” hides the important distinction: Wine and Proton primarily provide compatible interfaces and host mappings rather than simulating a complete Windows computer.

How Wine supplies the Windows environment
1. The loader starts the Windows program
Wine’s loader recognizes a Windows executable and starts it under the compatibility environment. The executable still contains Windows assumptions: Windows DLL names, calling conventions, registry-style configuration, filesystem behavior, synchronization primitives, and other system interfaces.
2. Wine implements the APIs the game calls
When the game requests an operating-system service through a Windows API, Wine supplies an implementation and connects it to an appropriate host facility. A file operation may be represented with host filesystem operations; a window request may be connected to the host display system; a thread or synchronization request may use host mechanisms. “Translated” is useful shorthand, but not every Windows instruction or internal kernel operation is rewritten one-for-one. The practical question is whether the behavior visible to the game is compatible enough.
3. Libraries and configuration complete the environment
Games often depend on multiple Windows components rather than a single API. A title may use graphics, audio, input, networking, fonts, media playback, launchers, or copy-protection components. Wine and the surrounding runtime therefore provide a collection of libraries and configuration files, and a game can behave differently when one component changes.
What Proton adds for Steam games
Proton is Valve’s game-focused compatibility tool for running Windows games on Linux through Steam. It is based on modified Wine and includes additional components and high-performance graphics implementations. Steam presents Proton as an integrated path, so players normally select a Proton version for a game instead of assembling every compatibility component manually.

Proton does not turn a Windows title into a native Linux build. The title remains the Windows release, and Proton supplies the environment that release expects. Different Proton versions can contain different Wine changes, graphics translators, media support, controller handling, and fixes. Consequently, a result for one Proton version is not automatically a result for another.
How Direct3D calls reach a Linux GPU
Direct3D 9, 10, and 11: DXVK over Vulkan
Many Windows games issue commands through Microsoft Direct3D. DXVK translates Direct3D 9, 10, and 11 calls into Vulkan calls. Vulkan is then handled by the Linux graphics driver, which submits work to the GPU.
The translation is more than a simple name substitution. Different graphics APIs expose different resource models, synchronization rules, shader formats, and feature sets. A translator must preserve the game’s expected behavior while expressing it through Vulkan. Driver quality and the GPU’s supported features remain essential; a compatibility layer cannot manufacture a hardware capability that the host does not provide.

Direct3D 12: VKD3D-Proton over Vulkan
Direct3D 12 follows a separate route. VKD3D-Proton implements Direct3D 12 over Vulkan. It should not be described as part of DXVK, because DXVK’s documented target is Direct3D 9/10/11. Direct3D 12 titles can therefore have different requirements, limitations, and bugs from older Direct3D games even when both ultimately use Vulkan.

Alternative route: WineD3D and OpenGL
Proton also documents a configuration that uses WineD3D’s OpenGL renderer instead of the Vulkan-based DXVK renderer. In Steam launch options, the documented form is:
PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%This is a troubleshooting and compatibility option, not a universal performance recommendation. It changes the rendering path, so a game that has a problem in one path may behave differently in the other. The right comparison is made on the same game, hardware, driver, and software versions, measuring the behavior that matters to you.
Input, audio, and other interfaces also need translation
Graphics are only one compatibility surface. Controller input can cross several interfaces: a game may expect DirectInput, a device may expose HID behavior, Steam may provide SDL-based handling, and Linux may represent the device through its joystick subsystem. Proton’s controller documentation describes mappings among these layers. A controller that appears correctly in the operating system can still need a compatible presentation to the game.

The same principle applies to other subsystems. A title can depend on window management, sound, video playback, network calls, fonts, installer behavior, or a separate launcher. A graphics API mapping by itself does not establish that the whole game works.

Why translation does not automatically mean slower performance
Translation introduces work, but “translation” does not imply a fixed performance penalty. A compatibility layer can avoid the cost of running a complete guest operating system, and a well-designed graphics path can map efficiently to the host API. Vulkan may also expose a rendering model that is a good fit for the driver and hardware.
Performance is therefore title-specific. It depends on the game’s workload, shader compilation, CPU overhead, synchronization, driver behavior, graphics features, resolution, frame-rate target, and the exact versions in use. A game can perform similarly to, better than, or worse than its Windows run under particular conditions; the architecture alone cannot determine which outcome occurs. Controlled comparisons must use the same hardware, game build, settings, and comparable driver and compatibility-layer versions.
What determines whether a game works
Nominal API support is only a starting point. Real compatibility can depend on:

- Graphics features required by the title and supported by the Vulkan driver and GPU.
- Middleware for video, audio, input, networking, or launchers.
- Digital-rights-management components and how they interact with the compatibility environment.
- Multiplayer anti-cheat requirements and whether the game’s service permits the Linux path.
- Game patches, Proton or Wine revisions, graphics-driver updates, and version-specific regressions.
- Hardware differences, including CPU architecture, available memory, GPU generation, and driver configuration.
These variables explain why one game can be reliable while another with the same nominal Direct3D version fails to start or loses a feature.
Choosing between Vulkan and OpenGL rendering paths

For Direct3D 12 games, evaluate VKD3D-Proton separately; treating DXVK as a translator for every DirectX generation leads to the wrong diagnosis.
A practical way to diagnose a non-working game
- Identify the exact software combination. Record the game build, selected Proton or Wine version, Linux distribution, graphics driver, GPU, and relevant launch options.
- Confirm the host graphics stack. Verify that Vulkan or OpenGL works for the renderer the game is using and that the driver exposes the required features. A compatibility layer cannot replace a missing or broken driver capability.
- Classify the game’s graphics API. Direct3D 9/10/11 points toward DXVK; Direct3D 12 points toward VKD3D-Proton. Do not assume that a fix for one route applies to the other.
- Separate startup from rendering failures. If the launcher never opens, investigate Windows APIs, middleware, DRM, or launcher dependencies rather than changing graphics settings first. If the game starts but rendering is broken, compare the Vulkan path with the documented WineD3D option.
- Test input independently. Check whether the controller is visible to the host and whether the game receives the expected DirectInput, HID, SDL, or joystick presentation.
- Change one variable at a time. Switching Proton versions, drivers, launch options, and game settings simultaneously makes it impossible to identify the cause.
- Record the result by version. A working configuration is specific evidence for that title and software combination, not a guarantee for every game.
Keeping release information in perspective
Compatibility projects change quickly. Wine’s release listing currently identifies Wine 11.0 as stable and Wine 11.19 as a development release dated October 2, 2026. Those labels are time-sensitive; check the current Wine release page when selecting a version or documenting a result. Proton builds likewise evolve, so a report should name the exact build rather than saying only “Proton.”
The practical takeaway
Compatibility layers translate interfaces, not an entire game’s source code. Wine or Proton supplies the Windows-facing environment; DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, or WineD3D handles the graphics API path; host drivers and hardware perform the final rendering. That layered design avoids a full Windows virtual machine, but it cannot guarantee identical behavior. Treat compatibility as a tested combination of game, layer version, graphics path, driver, hardware, and other services—not as a simple yes-or-no property of an API label.
