Coinbase earnings event contracts are binary prediction contracts: you buy a Yes or No position on a specifically defined earnings outcome. A winning contract pays $1, while a losing contract pays $0. Your net result is the value of the winning contracts you still hold, minus what you paid and any fees.
The number shown as “Payout if correct” is a potential gross payout, not a guaranteed return. The final credit depends on the market’s settlement rules, your remaining contract count, fills, trades before resolution and fees. For earnings markets, the contract detail page—not a general earnings headline or Coinbase quote—determines whether your position wins.
What a Coinbase earnings event contract is
A prediction-market contract lets you trade a defined future event. In an earnings market, the event might concern a company’s reported revenue, earnings-per-share result or another metric, but the exact wording is market-specific. You choose one of two outcomes:

- No: the defined event does not occur under those rules.
Coinbase states that these markets are operated by Kalshi, an independent exchange regulated by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Coinbase’s general explanation describes the contract price as the likelihood traders collectively assign to an outcome. A Yes contract priced at $0.65 therefore represents an approximately 65% market-implied chance, not a promise that the event will happen and not an annualized investment return.

The price is also the amount you pay per contract before applicable fees. Because prices move as orders are matched, the probability implied when you enter can differ from the probability shown later in your portfolio.
Read the earnings market’s own rules first
There is no single universal Coinbase earnings formula. Each market defines the event, the data source and the procedure used to settle it. Open the market detail page and check every item below before placing an order.
Metric and wording
Identify exactly what the contract measures. “Revenue,” “adjusted earnings per share,” and a year-over-year percentage are different events. Terms such as “above,” “at least,” “below,” or a range boundary determine whether a result at the boundary qualifies. Do not substitute a company’s headline number for the metric named in the contract.
Reporting period
Confirm the fiscal quarter or year covered. A company can release quarterly and annual figures together, and a contract may refer to a particular fiscal period rather than the calendar quarter suggested by the release date.
Settlement source
The contract names the source of truth used for settlement. Coinbase’s payout documentation says settlement is based solely on that listed source, which could produce a different result from a live market quote, a news summary or another data provider. The source named before trading begins controls.
Cutoff and resolution time
Check when trading stops and when the exchange can resolve the market. An earnings release may occur after the trading cutoff, and a market can remain unresolved while the named source confirms the result.

Rounding, ties and cancellations
Read the stated rounding method and any treatment of ties, corrected filings, missing data or cancelled events. If a contract does not clearly explain how a borderline value is handled, you cannot determine the outcome from the payout equation alone. The market-specific rules are controlling.

For a standard binary contract, the arithmetic is straightforward:

Coinbase’s worked example buys 10 Yes contracts at $0.40 each. The purchase costs $4.00. If Yes wins, the 10 contracts pay $10.00, producing a $6.00 gross profit before fees. If Yes loses, the contracts pay $0 and the position loses the $4.00 purchase cost, plus any applicable fees.
The $1 settlement value is a contract rule, not a forecast of how often traders win. A $0.40 price can be attractive only if you judge the event’s chance, the rules and the fees to justify paying 40 cents. Your approximate break-even probability must be high enough to cover fees as well as the 40-cent cost; the displayed price itself does not include a guaranteed profit margin.
Why “Payout if correct” can differ from your final amount
The portfolio’s “Payout if correct” figure is a potential aggregate amount for the selected outcome. Position details can also show current odds, contract count, average fill price, potential payout and profit. Those figures are snapshots of the position, not a locked settlement statement.

You no longer hold the original number of contracts
The potential payout uses the contracts currently associated with the position. If you sell some contracts before resolution, only the remaining contracts can pay $1 each. If you buy more at a different price, the contract count and average fill price change. A partial fill can also leave you with fewer contracts than the quantity you entered.

Your fills were at different prices
An order can execute across multiple prices. The average fill price reflects the actual matched purchases, while a headline quote may show the latest available market price. Your cost is based on your fills, not on the last displayed quote.
Fees reduce what you keep
Coinbase shows the fee breakdown at order confirmation. Fees can make the net profit lower than the difference between the $1 payout and the displayed entry price. Compare the confirmed fee amount with your purchase cost when reconciling the result.
You traded before settlement
Selling a position before the market resolves creates a realized trade result for the contracts sold; those contracts are no longer part of the eventual $1-per-winner payout. Buying or selling later can therefore make the final settlement credit differ from the original potential payout shown when you opened the position.

A release or news report does not itself create a Coinbase settlement. The independent exchange must apply the named source and market rules. Until that process completes, a displayed potential payout remains conditional.
How an earnings market settles and how money moves
- Trading closes or the event occurs. The market reaches its specified cutoff and awaits the result from its named source.
- The exchange determines the outcome. Settlement follows the source and rules published in the contract details, including any stated rounding, tie or cancellation provisions.
- Winning positions are credited. Each winning contract pays $1; losing contracts pay $0. The credit reflects the winning contracts still held at resolution.
- Funds appear in the Prediction Market USD balance. Coinbase says settled winnings first become available there for additional prediction-market activity.
- Eligible funds transfer to the primary Coinbase account. Coinbase describes automatic transfers on business days every two hours from 6:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time. There are no scheduled transfers on weekends or U.S. bank holidays.
The transfer schedule is separate from the settlement decision. A market can be resolved while the money is still waiting for the next scheduled sweep, and a weekend or bank holiday can extend that wait.
Funding, fees and eligibility
Accepted funding
Contracts can be purchased with settled USD or USDC. “Settled” matters: a balance that is pending from another transaction may not be available for a new order.

Fee visibility
Review the fee line at order confirmation before submitting. Keep that amount with your trade records because net profit is calculated after fees, not from the payout alone.

Who can access the markets
Coinbase limits prediction-market eligibility to U.S. residents and excludes Nevada and Michigan. Access can also be affected by maintenance, market conditions, holidays and regulatory requirements. If a market or feature is unavailable, that does not change the settlement terms of positions you already hold; it may simply prevent new trading or transfers at that moment.
Tax records
Coinbase warns that prediction-market gains may be considered taxable income. The tax treatment depends on your circumstances and jurisdiction. Preserve the contract name, outcome, quantity, fills, fees, settlement credit and daily statement so you can give a complete record to a qualified tax professional.
How to reconcile a payout in Coinbase
When the amount you expected does not match the credit you see, use the Predictions portfolio and transaction views in this order:
- Open the settled position and record the outcome, number of contracts, average fill price, potential payout and payment method.
- Check the position’s final contract count. Subtract contracts sold or otherwise closed before resolution from the quantity you originally purchased.
- Review fills and calculate the purchase cost from each executed price, rather than from a rounded quote.
- Open the order confirmation or transaction detail and record every fee.
- Verify that the market’s settlement source and event definition match the result you are using. A company headline can omit a qualifying adjustment or use a different reporting period.
- Check the Prediction Market USD balance for the settlement credit, then allow for the next business-day transfer window.
- Use the daily statement as the official record of settled payouts. Coinbase notes that in-app transaction history can briefly lag during high-volume settlement.
If the daily statement still conflicts with the settled position after the transfer window, save screenshots or exported records showing the contract rules, final position and statement, then contact Coinbase support with the market identifier and settlement date.
How to compare two Coinbase earnings contracts
Two markets can refer to the same company and earnings release yet carry different risks because their definitions and settlement mechanics differ. Compare the following items side by side:

Use the market detail page as the controlling document for every row. Coinbase’s general help pages explain the binary framework, but they do not publish one permanent earnings-data vendor or one formula that applies to every earnings contract.
Common mistakes and the practical fix
Treating the price as a guaranteed percentage return
A 65-cent price means traders imply roughly a 65% chance; it does not mean a 65% return. Calculate the $1 payout, your actual cost and fees instead.
Assuming a headline number decides the market
Read the metric, period, adjustments and source in the contract. If they differ from the headline, the contract rules win.
Multiplying the original order by $1 after selling
Use the contracts still held at resolution. A sold contract cannot later produce the settlement payout.
Confusing settlement with the bank transfer
Look first in Prediction Market USD. The scheduled transfer to the primary account follows on business days and pauses on weekends and U.S. bank holidays.
Checking only the app’s recent activity
During heavy settlement volume, transaction history can lag. The daily statement is Coinbase’s official settled-payout record.
A complete example from order to settlement
Suppose you buy 10 Yes contracts at an executed average of $0.40. Your pre-fee cost is $4.00. Before resolution, you sell two contracts. The market then resolves Yes under its named source. Only the eight contracts still held qualify for the $1 settlement, so the gross settlement credit for that remaining position is $8.00. Your overall result must also include the cost of the original purchases, the proceeds and fees from the sale, and any fees attached to the opening order. The portfolio’s final profit figure is therefore not obtained by simply subtracting $4.00 from $10.00.
If the market instead resolves No, the eight remaining contracts pay $0. The two contracts sold earlier have whatever realized result their sale produced, while the six? No—the original 10 minus the two sold leaves eight, and those eight expire at zero. This illustrates why a final contract count and a complete transaction history are necessary.
