Cloud gaming streams a game running on a provider’s server; remote play streams a game running on your own console or computer. In both cases, your phone receives the picture and sound and sends your controls back over a network. The difference is where the game runs—and what you need to own or set up before you can play.

What’s the difference between cloud gaming and remote play?

With cloud gaming, a service runs the game on its remote hardware and sends a live audiovisual stream to your phone. With remote play, your own console or computer runs the game and streams its output to your phone. In either case, the phone acts as a screen and input device rather than doing the main game rendering.

Microsoft describes the distinction directly: Xbox Game Streaming runs on an Xbox server in an Azure datacenter, while Xbox Remote Play runs on the user’s Xbox console. The player connects to the server in the first case and to their home console in the second. Microsoft’s game-streaming overview was updated July 7, 2026.

Question Cloud gaming Remote play
Where does the game run? On the gaming provider’s server. On your console or computer.
What do you need besides a phone? Access to a cloud service and a game it offers, plus a compatible device and connection. A compatible console or computer, an eligible game, an account, and remote-play setup.
What does the phone connect to? The provider’s service. Your console or computer, typically over the internet or a local network.
Does the host need to be available? Your personal console does not need to render the game. Your own console or computer must be able to run and stream the game.

Cloud gaming can be useful when you want to play a supported game without relying on your own console to render it. Remote play is the way to use a console or gaming computer you already have when you want to play from another room or away from home. Neither option removes the need for a reliable connection: the game is interactive, so the service or host must receive your input and return the updated picture continuously.

How does a game get from the server or console to the phone?

Cloud gaming: provider server to phone

You open a supported cloud-gaming service in an app or browser and choose a game available to your account and region. The remote server runs the game, encodes its video and audio, and streams that output to the phone. Your taps, touchscreen gestures, or gamepad inputs travel back to the service, which applies them to the running game. Xbox describes its service as streaming games through apps and browsers on compatible internet-connected devices. Its December 19, 2025 Xbox Cloud Gaming guide says mobile play on Android, iOS, and iPadOS uses a browser and directs users to Xbox.com/play.

Remote play: your device to your phone

Remote play uses the same basic streaming loop, but your own console or computer is the host. It runs the game, captures its output, and sends that stream to the phone; controls travel back to the host. For PlayStation, the phone connects to a PS5 or PS4 associated with the player’s account. Sony’s PS5 mobile-device instructions require initial console configuration, and explain how to enable Remote Play and configure rest-mode network settings if you want to wake the console remotely.

Steam Remote Play follows the same host-and-client model: the game runs on one computer while another supported device connects to it. The Steam Link app extends access to supported devices, including phones. That remains remote play, not cloud gaming, because your computer—not a provider’s gaming server—hosts the game. Valve explains the setup in its Steam Remote Play support guide and Steamworks Remote Play documentation.

Which one should you choose?

Start with what you want to play and what hardware you already have. A game being available on a service does not mean it is available in every country, for every account, or on every phone. Check the selected service’s current compatibility information and game catalog before troubleshooting your connection or buying accessories.

  • Choose cloud gaming if the game is offered by a service you can access and you do not want your own console or PC to be the device rendering it.
  • Choose remote play if the game runs on a console or computer you own and you want to access that host from your phone.
  • Check the host requirement before leaving home: remote play depends on your console or computer being configured and available to stream. Cloud gaming does not depend on your personal console rendering the game.
  • Check compatibility and availability for your particular phone, operating-system version, country or region, browser or app, account, and game.

Cloud gaming is not automatically a better option for mobile data, and remote play is not automatically limited to the same room. Both stream video over a network. The practical choice depends on service availability, your host device, connection conditions, and whether you can use the controls the game requires.

What do you need to play on a phone?

For Xbox Cloud Gaming

Microsoft’s December 2025 guide lists Android 12.0 or later and iOS 14.4 or later for mobile cloud play, and says mobile play works in a browser. It recommends a connection of at least 20 Mbps and favors wired Ethernet where possible or 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G on capable devices. These are Xbox-specific requirements and recommendations, not universal minimums for every cloud service or a guarantee of smooth play. Use the current Xbox Cloud Gaming guide to check current device support, game availability, regions, and account or subscription terms.

For PlayStation Remote Play

Sony’s instructions require a PlayStation account and a PS5 or PS4 configured for Remote Play. To connect from a phone, sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console. If you want to wake the console remotely, Sony also instructs users to enable the relevant network features in the console’s rest-mode settings. Sony’s PS Remote Play page and mobile setup instructions are the place to check the current device and operating-system requirements for your specific phone.

For Steam Remote Play

You need a computer that can run the game and Steam Remote Play, plus a supported client device. The computer remains the host while the phone connects through the supported client, such as Steam Link. Consult Valve’s Steam Remote Play support guide for current setup details. Do not assume a Steam game is hosted in the cloud simply because you can view and control it on a phone.

How to get started

Start an Xbox cloud-gaming session

  1. Check that your phone’s operating-system version and location are supported, and confirm that the game you want is currently available to your account. Xbox availability, supported games, regions, and subscription terms can change.
  2. Connect to a stable Wi-Fi or mobile network. Xbox’s December 2025 guide recommends at least 20 Mbps and favors Ethernet where possible or 5 GHz Wi-Fi or 5G on capable devices.
  3. Open a supported browser on your mobile device and go to Xbox.com/play, the destination identified in Microsoft’s mobile cloud-gaming guide.
  4. Sign in as required, choose an available game, and select an input method the game supports. Use a compatible controller if the game requires one.

Set up PS Remote Play

  1. Confirm that you have a PS5 or PS4, a PlayStation account, a compatible phone, and a network suitable for streaming.
  2. On the console, enable Remote Play in its settings. Follow Sony’s console and mobile setup instructions for the correct menus and account steps.
  3. If you need to wake the console from rest mode, configure the network options Sony specifies for that feature in the console’s rest-mode settings.
  4. On the phone, use Sony’s Remote Play app and sign in with the same PlayStation account associated with the console, then connect to the console.
  5. Choose a supported controller or other available input method, then adjust stream quality if your connection needs it. Sony documents a mobile-data quality setting; traffic varies with the selected quality.

Connect with Steam Remote Play

  1. Make sure the computer that will host the game can run it and is set up for Steam Remote Play.
  2. Install or open the supported Steam Link client on the phone and follow Valve’s pairing and connection instructions.
  3. Connect the phone to the host computer, select a game, and use a compatible input method. The game process remains on the computer.

How much internet speed and data do you need?

Speed recommendations vary by service. Xbox recommends at least 20 Mbps for Xbox Cloud Gaming. Sony’s PS Remote Play guide recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and 15 Mbps upload and download for best performance. These are provider recommendations for their respective services, not results from a direct comparison, a universal standard, or a promise about latency or image quality.

Service Published connection guidance What the figure means
Xbox Cloud Gaming At least 20 Mbps Xbox recommendation in its December 19, 2025 guide.
PS Remote Play At least 5 Mbps upload and download; 15 Mbps each for best performance Sony guidance on its current support page, accessed October 13, 2026.

A speed test is only one part of the picture. The stream must travel both ways: your device receives the game video and sends input back. Distance to the service or host, network congestion, Wi-Fi interference, cellular coverage, and instability can all affect responsiveness. A connection that briefly reaches a headline speed can still perform poorly if it fluctuates or drops packets.

For a more reliable session, use a stable connection, move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, reduce avoidable wireless congestion, and use a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when the device and network support it. Xbox also favors wired Ethernet where possible, which may help the host or network connection even when the phone itself is wireless. These steps can reduce local network problems, but they cannot guarantee low latency or compensate for service outages or weak cellular coverage.

Mobile data is possible for remote play, but check both your plan and the service’s behavior before starting a long session. Sony warns that PS Remote Play uses more data than most video-streaming services and that carrier or network conditions can prevent mobile-data use. Sony allows streaming quality to be adjusted over mobile data, with traffic varying according to the selected quality. No general data-per-hour figure applies to every service, game, device, and quality setting.

Do you need a controller?

Not always, but a gamepad is useful for many games. Xbox says most games require a gamepad; some supported games offer touch controls or mouse-and-keyboard input. A game’s available inputs depend on that game and service, so check before assuming that on-screen controls will work.

You may be able to use a controller you already own. Xbox lists Xbox controllers, DualSense, Backbone, GameSir, and 8BitDo as examples of controller options. Sony documents DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 options for mobile use, with compatibility depending on the device and operating system. Check the phone, connection method, service, and game before choosing hardware. A telescopic phone gaming controller is one optional accessory format; a compatible Bluetooth controller may also work. These are form-factor examples, not endorsements of a specific model.

If you do not own a controller, first check whether the game supports touchscreen input and whether your current controller can connect to your phone. Buying one is an ergonomic choice as well as a compatibility question: a telescopic controller holds the phone between its controls, while a separate Bluetooth controller leaves the phone mounted or propped up elsewhere.

What to check when streaming is unreliable

  • The session will not connect: For remote play, verify that the host console or computer is on or configured for remote wake, that the remote feature is enabled, and that you are signed into the required account. For cloud gaming, check service availability, region, account access, and whether the game is currently offered.
  • The picture stutters or becomes unclear: Check connection stability rather than speed alone. Try a less congested Wi-Fi network, move closer to the access point, or lower streaming quality if the service provides that option.
  • Controls feel delayed: A phone stream depends on input travelling to the host or provider and the updated picture travelling back. Distance, congestion, unstable Wi-Fi, and cellular conditions can contribute; the published speed recommendation by itself cannot establish the session’s latency.
  • Mobile data does not work: Confirm that the service allows mobile-data streaming on your device and that your carrier supports the connection. Sony specifically notes that carrier and network conditions can prevent PS Remote Play over mobile data.
  • Inputs do not work: Check whether the game supports your chosen input method and whether the controller is compatible with both the phone and service. Some games support touch or mouse-and-keyboard input, but that is not universal.

What cloud gaming and remote play do not mean

Streaming a game to a phone does not mean the phone is running the full game locally. The phone decodes the incoming audiovisual stream and sends input back; the main rendering occurs on the provider’s server or on your own console or computer, depending on the method.

Likewise, playing remotely does not guarantee that every game, phone, controller, country, or network is supported. Compatibility is service-specific and can change. Check the provider’s current guidance for the exact device and game rather than treating one service’s requirements as rules for all game streaming.
