ClickFix is a social-engineering attack, not a special kind of malware. A criminal creates a page, message, advertisement or shared post that looks like a CAPTCHA, browser error, software update or other routine problem. The page then tells you to “fix” it by copying text into Run, PowerShell, Terminal or another command interface. When you execute that command, native system tools can download and launch the attacker’s payload.
Microsoft has documented ClickFix activity against both Windows and macOS. Campaigns have delivered information stealers, remote-access tools, loaders, ransomware and other malware. The exact payload changes, but the decisive moment is consistent: a person runs a command supplied by an untrusted source.
What a ClickFix attack is
ClickFix is the name used for a family of lures that persuade someone to execute an attacker-provided command. The victim may believe they are proving they are human, repairing a browser, opening a document or installing a legitimate update. Unlike a conventional drive-by exploit, the attack often depends on the victim completing an apparently helpful step.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Microsoft Defender Experts described the technique on August 21, 2025, as an attempt to trick users into running malicious commands by exploiting the urge to solve “minor technical issues” and benign interactions such as human-verification and CAPTCHA checks. The Center for Internet Security (CIS) similarly says the method abuses familiarity with verification prompts to make users run shell scripts that download malware and additional tools.

A CAPTCHA, update notice or error message should not require you to paste a command into a system shell. That single rule is the most useful way to recognize the technique.
How the attack chain works
1. The attacker chooses a believable pretext
The first screen is designed to look ordinary and urgent. Common themes include a fake CAPTCHA, a “prove that you are human” check, a browser or video playback error, an expired certificate warning, a document that supposedly needs repair, or an update prompt. The wording “Fix It” has appeared in reported lures.
The page may copy the colors, logos and layout of a familiar service without actually being operated by that service. Some campaigns place the prompt in a pop-up or redirect so the address bar is easy to overlook.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
2. The lure reaches the target
ClickFix instructions can arrive through phishing email, malicious advertising, compromised websites and redirects. A person might reach the page after clicking a search result, opening an attachment link or visiting a legitimate site that has been compromised. Google Threat Intelligence also reported a campaign first observed in early December 2025 in which deceptive instructions were placed in publicly shared generative-AI chat transcripts. That is a reported delivery route, not a requirement for every campaign.

3. The page supplies a command
Instead of asking you to click a normal download button, the page tells you to copy text and paste it into a command interface. On Windows this may be Run, Command Prompt or PowerShell; on macOS it may be Terminal. The command can be hidden in a button’s clipboard action, split into several lines or surrounded by technical-looking explanation.
Because the user performs the copy-and-paste step, the browser may not show a conventional malware download. Security products also have less opportunity to block an exploit before execution.
4. Native utilities fetch and start the payload
After execution, the command can invoke tools already present on the operating system to retrieve a script or binary, then launch it. The initial command may be short while the downloaded stage performs the damaging work. A campaign can therefore change its payload or download location without redesigning the lure.
5. The payload pursues the campaign’s objective
Reported outcomes include credential and financial theft, information-stealing malware, remote-access tools, loaders and ransomware. Some infections are intended to establish access for a later operator rather than steal data immediately. The visual prompt does not tell you which outcome will follow; that depends on the campaign and the device.

Why ClickFix is effective
- It borrows trusted habits. People are accustomed to completing CAPTCHAs, dismissing browser warnings and applying updates.
- It creates time pressure. A blocked page or countdown encourages a quick response instead of checking the address or command.
- It uses the victim’s own privileges. A command launched by the logged-in user can look like ordinary activity to basic controls.
- It changes the visible story. One campaign can look like a CAPTCHA while another imitates a document fix or browser security alert.
- It works across platforms. Microsoft has reported Windows and macOS targeting, with the command interface adapted to each system.
Microsoft reported seeing ClickFix campaigns affecting “thousands of enterprise and end-user devices globally every day” in its August 21, 2025 article. That figure is Microsoft’s observation of campaign activity, not an independently measured count of all victims worldwide. Microsoft Defender Experts also reported that thousands of devices were affected per month in early 2025 even when endpoint detection and response (EDR) was enabled.
Recent examples and how they differ
ClickFix is a technique, so the lure, entry route, operating system, command interface and payload can vary. The following examples should not be treated as one universal sequence.
| Report | Lure or entry route | Notable execution detail | Reported result or significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Threat Intelligence and Defender Experts, August 21, 2025 | Phishing, malvertising, compromised sites and fake human-verification or CAPTCHA prompts | User is instructed to copy and run a command | Campaigns observed at large scale; payloads included information stealers and other malware |
| Microsoft Defender Experts, February 5, 2026 (CrashFix) | A malicious browser extension disrupted browsing and displayed a fake security warning | The lure induced command execution and included abuse of the native Windows finger utility |
Reported deployment of a Python remote-access trojan |
| Center for Internet Security, October 27, 2025 | Fake verification and troubleshooting prompts | Victim runs shell scripts that download malware and additional tools | More than one-third of non-malware Albert Network Monitoring and Management alerts in the first half of 2025 were associated with this technique; that statistic applies to that monitoring system, not all organizations |
| Google Threat Intelligence Group, 2026 | Deceptive instructions embedded in publicly shared AI chat transcripts; activity first observed in early December 2025 | Victim is directed to copy a command into a terminal | Shows that shared generative-AI content can become a distribution channel |
| U.S. HHS Health Sector Cybersecurity Coordination Center, October 29, 2024 | Historical fake verification and support-style lures | Social engineering leads to command execution | Provides earlier background; it should not be read as a current prevalence estimate |
How to recognize a fake verification or “fix” prompt
- It asks for a command. Legitimate CAPTCHAs and ordinary browser checks use an on-page interaction, not a shell command.
- It tells you to bypass normal safeguards. Instructions to ignore warnings, disable protection or paste text into Run, PowerShell or Terminal are a major warning sign.
- The page claims an unusual emergency. A sudden “security fix” that appears after a redirect or pop-up deserves independent verification.
- The address does not match the service. Check the complete domain, not only a familiar logo or the first words in the page title.
- The command is unreadable or opaque. Long encoded strings, unfamiliar download commands and text that changes when pasted should be treated as hostile.
- The prompt appears in unexpected content. Shared documents, public chat transcripts, advertisements and comments are not trusted software-distribution channels.
What to do when you encounter ClickFix
- Do not copy or run the command. Do not paste it into Run, Command Prompt, PowerShell, Terminal or a browser address bar.
- Close the tab or window. If it will not close normally, use the browser’s standard force-close method rather than following on-screen instructions.
- Reach the supposed service through a trusted route. Type the known address yourself or use an established bookmark. Do not use the link or phone number shown in the suspicious prompt.
- Report the message or advertisement. Use your email, browser or organizational reporting function and preserve the page address and screenshots if policy permits.
- Tell your security team if the page was opened on a work device. Include whether anything was copied, pasted or executed; that detail determines the response.
If you already executed the command
Act as though the device may be compromised, even if no visible window appeared. Disconnect the device from networks when your organization’s incident process allows it, and contact your IT or security team using a known phone number or help-desk address. Do not continue experimenting with the command or delete evidence before responders advise you.
From a separate, trusted device, change passwords that may have been used on the affected computer, beginning with email and administrative accounts. Enable multifactor authentication where available. Ask responders whether session revocation, device isolation, reimaging or a credential reset is required; the right action depends on the command and the payload, which cannot be determined from the page’s appearance alone.

Defensive measures for individuals
Education is the primary defense because the victim’s execution is the pivotal step. Use a simple household or personal rule: no unexpected website, advertisement, email or shared AI transcript gets permission to provide a command for your computer. If a real service needs an update, open its official application or website independently and follow its normal update process.
Keep the operating system, browser and security software current, and use built-in phishing and reputation protections. These controls can reduce exposure, but they cannot make a deliberately executed command safe. Treat an instruction to disable protection or evade a warning as evidence against the prompt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Defensive measures for organizations
Train for the specific behavior
Security awareness should show employees the exact decision point: a fake problem followed by a request to paste a command. Practice reporting the page without executing it. Include phishing, malvertising, compromised sites, redirects and shared content in examples so training does not become tied to one visual template.
Limit unnecessary command access
Review which users and applications need PowerShell, Command Prompt, scripting hosts and other command interfaces. Apply least privilege and allow approved administrative workflows while restricting unnecessary interactive use. Any restriction should be tested against business requirements so staff do not create unsafe workarounds.

Layer endpoint, web and network controls
Microsoft’s CrashFix guidance recommends cloud-delivered antivirus protection, EDR configured in block mode, network egress filtering, network protection, web protection, browsers with SmartScreen-capable protections and relevant attack-surface-reduction rules. These are Microsoft product-specific recommendations; assess each control’s compatibility, alerting and policy impact in your environment rather than treating the list as a universal configuration.
Monitor the whole chain
Detection should connect unusual browser activity, command interpreters, script engines, outbound connections and newly created files. Egress controls can interrupt a downloader even when a user has run the first command. Logging and rapid isolation are especially important because the initial command may fetch a changing second-stage payload.
Questions readers commonly ask
Is a CAPTCHA ever supposed to require a terminal command?
No ordinary human-verification check should require you to paste a command into Run, PowerShell or Terminal. A request to do so is a strong ClickFix warning sign.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Does ClickFix affect only Windows?
No. Microsoft has documented activity against Windows and macOS. The command syntax and native utilities can differ by operating system.
Can antivirus stop ClickFix?
Security tools can block known pages, scripts or payloads, but the technique is designed to make the user initiate the action. Microsoft reported affected devices even when EDR was enabled, which is why user training, command restrictions, web controls and egress filtering are used together.
Is every fake browser warning a ClickFix attack?
No. ClickFix specifically describes the social-engineering pattern in which a deceptive pretext leads the victim to execute an attacker-supplied command. A misleading pop-up without that execution step may be another type of scam.
Why do attackers use commands instead of a normal download?
A command can use trusted system utilities, avoid a conspicuous download button and retrieve a changing payload after the victim has granted execution. That can make the activity harder for simple download-focused defenses to recognize.
