Each Civilization VI turn is a short management cycle: resolve urgent movement and combat, keep cities producing and growing, select science and civic research, conduct diplomacy and trade, check your victory position, and end the turn. Your long-term plan is to make those repeated decisions serve one victory condition before another civilization does.
Science advances the Technology Tree, culture advances the Civics Tree, and contextual objectives called Eurekas and Inspirations can sharply reduce the remaining research time. The available victories depend on your ruleset: the base game includes Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, and Score, while the Gathering Storm expansion adds Diplomatic Victory.
What to do during every turn
Civilization VI is a turn-based 4X strategy game built around expanding an empire, researching technologies and civics, managing cities, dealing with other leaders, and competing for a first-to-finish victory. The game does not require you to spend every turn on the same actions, but a consistent review prevents the most expensive oversights.
Recommended Free Tools
- Resolve urgent movement and combat. Check units under attack, threatened settlers, exposed builders, and battles that can change before the next turn. Move military units, scouts, settlers, builders, religious units, and traders according to the immediate map situation. If a unit has a promotion available, consider whether taking it now changes its survival odds.
- Review every city. Confirm what each city is producing, whether a completed item requires a new choice, and whether citizens are assigned to the yields you need. A city growing toward a housing or amenity problem may need a different focus than a frontier city racing to finish a defensive unit.
- Choose science and civic research. Select a technology and a civic if either queue is empty. Read the available Eureka or Inspiration condition before locking in a long research path; an objective you can complete soon may be worth more than a theoretically attractive but unboosted choice.
- Handle diplomacy and trade. Respond to proposals, renew or change deals when appropriate, inspect relationships, and account for nearby wars. A trade route, open-border arrangement, alliance, or defensive agreement can affect both your economy and your exposure to attack.
- Check strategic risks. Look at military strength, gold, faith, science, culture, amenities, housing, and loyalty or border problems where they apply. Open the victory and rankings views to see whether another civilization is approaching a win that requires an immediate response.
- End the turn deliberately. Before pressing the button, make sure no unit still has a vital action, no city is waiting for production, and both research queues are set. Ending early can leave a valuable move, improvement, or build unused for an entire turn.
This is a practical checklist rather than a mandatory in-game sequence. The correct order changes when, for example, an enemy army is one move from a city or a rival is close to completing a victory project.

How research works: two connected trees
The Technology Tree uses science
Science yield advances the Technology Tree. Technologies unlock military units, buildings, districts, improvements, resources, and later-era projects. Your science per turn determines how quickly the selected technology completes, but the best choice is not always the one with the shortest listed cost. A technology that enables a needed unit, defensive response, district, or Eureka can have greater practical value than a purely economic option.
The Civics Tree uses culture
Culture yield advances the Civics Tree independently of science. Civics unlock governments, policy cards, diplomatic tools, cultural buildings, and many of the systems that shape how an empire converts its yields into power. A player pursuing any victory still needs civics: governments and policy cards can improve production, research, faith, trade, military logistics, or tourism.
You normally select one technology and one civic, then continue producing science and culture until each finishes. The two queues are separate, so a weak culture economy can hold back a scientifically strong empire by delaying governments and policies, while low science can leave a culturally advanced civilization unable to defend itself.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match research to a plan, not a rigid script
Use the victory you currently intend to pursue as a guide for research, not as a reason to ignore the map. A science-oriented empire needs the technologies and production capacity for space projects, but may have to detour for military technology when a neighbor becomes hostile. A culture-oriented empire needs culture, tourism-enabling technologies and civics, yet still requires enough military strength to protect its cities and trade routes.
Keep the queue flexible. Map resources, terrain, rival behavior, available city locations, and the progress shown in the victory panel can all change which technology or civic is urgent. The Civilopedia and the in-game trees show the current ruleset’s prerequisites and boost conditions; use those entries rather than relying on a memorized order from a different patch, expansion, speed, or game mode.
Eurekas and Inspirations: the fastest way to reduce research time
Many technologies and civics have a contextual mini-objective. Completing the technology objective grants a Eureka; completing the civic objective grants an Inspiration. The boost reduces the remaining research burden for that item, allowing it to finish sooner than ordinary science or culture production would.

Firaxis designer Ed Beach described the intended scale in a 2016 interview with TIME: completing the associated activity grants “about 50% of the science that you need to unlock that particular technology.” The exact effect and the complete list of objectives belong to the active ruleset, so check the technology or civic entry in the current game.
Read the condition before choosing a queue
Open the tree and inspect the boost condition attached to each candidate. The condition may ask you to scout, improve a particular resource, build a district, found cities, train a unit, or perform another contextual action. If you can complete that task naturally in the next few turns, selecting the item now can turn the boost into a major timing advantage.
Plan actions that serve more than one purpose
Good play often combines an objective with an existing need. Scouting to reveal land can also satisfy a boost; improving a resource can strengthen a city while advancing research; founding a city can secure territory and trigger an Inspiration or Eureka. Do not force an objective that damages your empire merely to obtain a boost, but do look for actions that advance expansion, defense, economy, and research together.
Victory conditions in Civilization VI
The victory list is ruleset-dependent. The base game’s main paths are Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, and Score. Gathering Storm adds Diplomatic Victory through its diplomatic competition and World Congress systems. Always confirm which expansions and game modes are enabled before assuming that every path is available.
Science Victory
Science Victory is a space race. The official manual describes the objective as being the first civilization to establish a colony on Mars. In practical terms, you must reach the required late-game technologies, build the necessary space infrastructure and projects, and complete the race before another civilization wins by a different method.
Science is the obvious core yield, but production is equally important once projects become available. Cities with strong production, reliable power or other applicable infrastructure, and protection from attack can complete space projects faster. Keep watching rivals: a high science output does not guarantee victory if an opponent is already ahead in culture, domination, religion, or diplomacy.

Culture Victory
Culture Victory is won through cultural development and tourism. Your goal is to attract enough visiting tourists to become culturally dominant over the other civilizations. Wonders, great works, improvements, open borders, trade relationships, and tourism multipliers all support this route.
Culture is needed to unlock governments and policies, while tourism is what brings foreign visitors. A civilization can have impressive domestic culture and still fail to attract tourists if it neglects great works, tourism improvements, international access, or the multipliers available in its ruleset. Numerical thresholds and the timing of the win vary with the active ruleset, so use the victory screen for the live requirement.
Domination Victory
Domination Victory requires capturing every other civilization’s original capital. Capturing cities founded later by a rival may weaken that rival, but it does not by itself satisfy the victory test. The decisive objectives are the capitals that each civilization possessed at the start.

Research and civics that improve units matter, but so do roads, naval access, supply of gold, and the diplomatic consequences of prolonged war. Keep enough forces at home to prevent a third party from attacking while your main army is away.
Religion Victory
Religion Victory requires one religion to become predominant in every civilization. Holy sites and faith generation fund religious units and other faith purchases; apostles, missionaries, and theological combat determine whether your religion spreads or is removed.
The challenge is both offensive and defensive. Rival religions create pressure in your cities, and religious units can fight one another under the rules of theological combat. Protect your holy sites and key religious units, monitor the religious status of every civilization, and respond quickly when another religion is close to becoming predominant somewhere you have already converted.

Diplomatic Victory
Diplomatic Victory is associated with the Gathering Storm expansion. It uses diplomatic competition and the World Congress system, including decisions in which alliances, diplomatic favor, and international relationships affect your progress.
This path should be explained or planned only when that expansion or ruleset is active. Its requirements and scoring events are not part of the universal base-game victory list. In an enabled game, maintain favorable relationships, accumulate and spend diplomatic favor carefully, and treat World Congress choices as a long-term victory resource rather than isolated votes.
Score Victory
Score Victory is the fallback when no civilization has achieved another enabled victory by the game’s final turn or year limit. Broad development therefore matters: population, territory, technologies, civics, wonders, and survival all contribute to the empire that remains strongest when the clock runs out.
Score is not a substitute for monitoring the other victories. A player who is merely accumulating score can still lose immediately when another civilization completes Science, Culture, Domination, Religion, or Diplomatic Victory first.
Comparing the paths before you commit
| Victory | Primary yields and infrastructure | Opponent interaction | Main timing pressure | Typical failure mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Science | Science and production; space infrastructure and projects | Race against rival projects and every other victory | Reach late technologies and finish the space race first | Research lead without enough production, defense, or time |
| Culture | Culture, tourism, great works, wonders, improvements | Attract foreign tourists while resisting other victories | Keep tourism growth ahead of rival domestic culture | Strong internal culture but insufficient tourism or multipliers |
| Domination | Military production, logistics, intelligence, gold | Directly capture and hold every original capital | Maintain momentum before rivals complete another victory | Overextended armies, lost capitals, or a neglected home front |
| Religion | Faith, holy sites, religious units | Convert every civilization and fight rival religious pressure | Spread and defend one religion across the whole map | Rival religions remove your majority in one or more civilizations |
| Diplomatic | Diplomatic favor, alliances, World Congress systems | Compete through international decisions and relationships | Accumulate progress through expansion-specific diplomatic events | Entering a vote or crisis without enough favor or support |
| Score | Population, territory, technologies, civics, wonders, survival | Survive while no earlier victory is completed | Remain competitive until the final turn or year limit | Another civilization wins before the limit |
Which victory should a beginner choose?
Choose one primary path that matches your map, civilization abilities, and early opportunities, then keep enough flexibility to defend against the others. Science is often the clearest first objective because its progress is visible in the Technology Tree and it rewards a straightforward focus on science and production. Domination is attractive when you have strong military access and vulnerable neighbors, but it demands more direct combat management. Culture and Religion can be powerful yet require careful attention to tourism, great works, faith, religious pressure, and the actions of every rival. Diplomatic Victory is a sensible choice only when the Gathering Storm systems are active and you enjoy relationship and World Congress management.

Conquest can provide cities and infrastructure for a later science or culture push; culture unlocks governments and policy cards that strengthen every economy; faith can purchase units or support another victory; and advanced science improves military capability. Monitoring victory progress and avoiding defeat
Open the victory and rankings panels regularly, especially after meeting a new rival or entering a new era. Check who is producing unusually large amounts of science, culture, tourism, faith, or diplomatic favor, and identify which capitals, cities, or religious majorities would matter if that rival is pursuing a different path.
The official manual states that losing your last city causes immediate defeat. A military emergency therefore outranks an optional district or a convenient research boost. City-states cannot win a normal game, but they can provide important allies, resources, and diplomatic leverage, so their status still matters even though they are not victory competitors.
When a rival’s progress accelerates, respond to the specific threat: strengthen defenses against a domination push, target the source of tourism or religious pressure, improve your own diplomatic position when an expansion victory is active, or redirect production toward space infrastructure if the science race is tight. Watching only your own yields is how otherwise successful empires lose to an opponent’s completed victory.
