Citigroup makes money by selling financial services—not a single consumer product—to corporations, financial institutions, governments and households. Its main revenue engines are institutional cash management and securities services, trading and financing, investment banking and corporate lending, wealth management, and U.S. consumer cards. Income can come from interest-related activities, transaction and service fees, underwriting and advisory work, trading spreads and financing, and investment-related services. Reported revenue is not profit: operating expenses, credit-loss provisions, taxes, funding costs and regulatory requirements can materially change what remains.

What Citigroup is and how its model works

Citigroup Inc. is a global diversified financial-services holding company. In its 2025 Form 10-K, Citi describes its businesses as providing consumers, corporations, governments and institutions with financial products and services that include consumer banking and credit, corporate and investment banking, securities brokerage, trade and securities services, and wealth management.

That description explains the business model better than the word “bank” alone. Citi earns money when clients use its payment and cash-management infrastructure, trade or hedge in financial markets, borrow, issue securities, hold investments, obtain advice, or use credit cards. Some activities produce relatively recurring fees; others depend on deal volumes, market prices, interest rates, consumer spending or credit performance.

Citi reports revenue net of interest expense. A simplified way to read the income statement is:

  • Revenue: interest-related income and non-interest income after the applicable interest expense is deducted.
  • Credit costs: provisions for expected credit losses and realized charge-offs, especially important for cards and lending.
  • Operating expenses: compensation, technology, compliance, facilities, transformation, legal and other costs of running the franchise.
  • Net income: what remains after revenue, credit costs, operating expenses, taxes and other items.

Consequently, a higher revenue figure does not automatically produce a proportionate increase in earnings.

Citi’s reportable businesses

The five businesses named in Citi’s 2025 annual report are Services, Markets, Banking, Wealth and U.S. Personal Banking. Citi changed the presentation for its consumer-card business in 2026: quarterly filings use U.S. Consumer Cards (USCC) after the Retail Banking business was transferred to Wealth. A comparison across years must therefore identify the reporting period and the segment definition used in that filing.

Business label Primary customers Main revenue engines Key sensitivities
Services Corporations, institutions and public-sector clients Transaction, processing, account and service fees; balances associated with cash-management services Payment volumes, client balances, global trade and funding conditions
Markets Corporate, institutional and public-sector clients Trading spreads, financing, prime brokerage and related market activity Client demand, prices, liquidity, volatility and risk positions
Banking Corporate and institutional borrowers and issuers Investment-banking advice, underwriting, lending interest and fees Deal pipelines, issuance markets, borrower credit quality and concentrations
Wealth Affluent and high-net-worth clients Advice and asset-related fees, transactions, banking and lending income Asset values, net new assets, client activity and interest rates
U.S. Personal Banking (2025) / U.S. Consumer Cards (2026 presentation) U.S. consumers and card customers Card interest income, fees and payment economics Revolving balances, spending, rewards, funding costs, charge-offs and provisions

How Services generates revenue

Treasury and Trade Solutions

Treasury and Trade Solutions, commonly called TTS, helps organizations manage cash, payments, trade finance and working capital. A multinational company may use Citi to collect receipts, pay suppliers in multiple countries, move liquidity between accounts, finance goods in transit and reconcile transactions.

Citi can earn transaction, processing, account and other service fees from those activities. Client balances held in cash-management accounts also affect the economics of the business, including interest-related income and the cost of funding those balances. The value proposition is infrastructure and connectivity: payment rails, controls, liquidity tools and a network that links corporate and public-sector operations.

Securities Services

Securities Services provides custody, fund and asset servicing, settlement and related support to investors and financial intermediaries. Services may include holding and safeguarding securities, processing trades, administering funds, handling corporate actions and producing reporting needed by institutional clients.

Revenue is generally tied to servicing activity, assets and transactions rather than to selling a retail deposit product. Volumes, market values, client mandates and interest-rate conditions can all affect results. Client assets under custody or administration are not assets owned by Citi and are not themselves Citi revenue; they are a base on which servicing fees may be earned.

How Markets generates revenue

Markets helps corporate, institutional and public-sector clients transact in financial markets and manage risk. Its activities include foreign exchange, rates, fixed-income and spread products, equities, commodities, financing and prime-brokerage services.

A client may ask Citi to exchange currencies, hedge an interest-rate exposure, finance a securities position or execute a trade. Citi’s revenue can reflect the spread between buying and selling prices, commissions or other transaction economics, financing charges and changes in the value of positions used to serve clients.

Markets revenue is inherently variable. It responds to client activity, market prices, liquidity, competition, volatility and the firm’s risk positions. Volatility can create more hedging and trading opportunities, but it can also widen losses, reduce liquidity or make positions harder to manage. It is therefore incorrect to assume that a rise in volatility mechanically raises Markets revenue every time.

How Banking generates revenue

Investment banking

Banking combines investment banking and corporate lending. Investment bankers advise on mergers and acquisitions and other strategic transactions, arrange debt and equity underwriting, and provide related financing. Citi earns advisory fees when transactions close and underwriting or placement fees when securities are issued.

These revenues can be episodic. Corporate confidence, interest rates, valuations, regulation and market access influence whether a transaction is announced, financed and completed. A weak issuance environment can reduce fees even when the advisory franchise remains active.

Corporate lending

Citi lends to companies and institutions and earns interest and fees. Lending also creates exposure to borrower defaults, industry concentrations, country conditions and collateral values. When expected losses rise, Citi records provisions that reduce earnings even if interest income is still growing.

How Wealth generates revenue

Wealth serves affluent and high-net-worth clients with investment advice, portfolio services, banking, lending, custody, trust and related planning. Fees may be linked to advice or assets, while transaction revenues arise when clients trade or use other services. Interest-related income can come from client deposits and lending.

Wealth results can move with market levels, client trading, net new assets, interest rates and the mix of products used. A rising market may increase the value of fee-generating client assets, while withdrawals or falling prices can reduce the fee base. Assets under management or custody belong to clients; they are not the same as Citi’s balance-sheet assets or revenue.

In 2026, Citi’s reporting change moved Retail Banking into Wealth. That transfer affects trend analysis: an apparent increase or decrease may reflect the reclassification rather than an underlying change in the economics of the continuing business.

How U.S. consumer cards generate revenue

2025 label: U.S. Personal Banking

The 2025 annual-report segment U.S. Personal Banking (USPB) covered Branded Cards, Retail Services and Retail Banking. Branded and co-branded cards can produce interest income when customers revolve balances, along with fees and payment-related economics associated with spending and account use.

2026 label: U.S. Consumer Cards

In 2026 quarterly filings, Citi uses U.S. Consumer Cards (USCC) for the consumer-card business after the Retail Banking business was sold or transferred to Wealth. Use USCC when discussing 2026 results, and do not treat its figures as directly comparable with an unchanged USPB segment.

Card revenue has an important trade-off. Revolving balances can generate interest income, but rewards, funding expense, servicing costs, charge-offs and credit-loss provisions reduce the net contribution. Spending volume may support payment economics, while weaker household finances can increase delinquency and losses. Card performance therefore depends on both customer activity and the quality of the resulting receivables.

Why “All Other” matters

All Other contains items not assigned to the five reportable operating segments. It can include specified corporate activity, legacy franchises and other reconciling or discontinued-operation items. A sale, wind-down or accounting allocation can move revenue or expenses into this category.

For that reason, the five named businesses may not explain every dollar of company-wide revenue in a particular period. Reconcile segment disclosures to the reported Citigroup total, and check whether a filing describes a transfer, divestiture, discontinued operation or other presentation change.

Revenue is not the same as profit

Citi’s annual and quarterly reports present revenue, expenses, credit costs and net income as separate layers. Consider two periods with identical revenue: the one with higher compensation and technology spending, larger expected-loss provisions or greater funding costs can produce much lower net income.

Rank #4

  • 200 TWO-PART CARBONLESS RECEIPTS: Get 4 perforated customer receipts per page; the yellow copy stays behind in your book

  • 200 SETS PER BOOK: Stock up so you never run out; books provide 200 sequentially numbered carbonless sets

Credit costs are especially important for card and corporate-lending businesses. A provision is an accounting estimate of expected losses; a charge-off is a realized loss when a receivable is determined to be uncollectible. Both affect earnings, but they do not represent the same event or timing.

Capital and liquidity also constrain how Citi earns and retains money. A bank must fund assets, maintain liquidity, hold regulatory capital and invest in controls and systems. Those requirements do not appear as a simple deduction from one segment’s revenue, but they influence the returns that the businesses can generate.

Latest verified results: Q2 2026

As of October 16, 2026, Citi’s official quarterly-results page identified the July 14, 2026 release as the latest posted results package found for this article. For Citigroup Inc. in the second quarter of 2026, the release reported:

Measure Reported amount What it represents
Revenue $24.8 billion Company-wide quarterly revenue
Net income $5.8 billion Earnings after expenses, credit costs, taxes and other items
Diluted earnings per share $3.15 Per-share earnings measure
Common Equity Tier 1 capital ratio 12.8% Capital measure, not revenue or profit

Citi’s investor-relations calendar listed a Q3 2026 earnings call for October 13. An event listing does not establish that Q3 figures had been released, so it should not be used as evidence for Q3 revenue or earnings. Readers using this article after that date should verify the latest official earnings release or SEC filing and note any updated segment definitions.

How to compare Citi’s businesses

A single headline revenue ranking can mislead because the segments have different economics. Use these comparison questions when reading a filing:

Comparison question Why it matters
Who pays? Corporate and institutional clients, wealth clients and consumer cardholders have different activity and risk patterns.
What is the revenue engine? Fees, net interest income, underwriting, advisory, trading spreads, financing and asset-related fees do not behave the same way.
How cyclical is it? Deal markets, volatility, interest rates, consumer spending and credit quality can affect businesses at different times.
What balance-sheet or credit exposure sits behind it? Services and custody are generally service-led, while lending and cards place receivables and default risk on the balance sheet.
How recurring is the revenue? Payments and custody relationships may be recurring, while trading and investment-banking fees can be more episodic.
Is the reporting comparable? Transfers, divestitures, currency effects and accounting presentation can make year-to-year segment figures non-comparable without adjustment.

Risks that can change Citi’s earnings

Credit risk

Consumers, companies and institutions may fail to repay. Higher delinquencies and defaults lead to charge-offs and larger provisions, affecting card, commercial and institutional lending results.

Market and liquidity risk

Interest rates, currencies, asset prices and market liquidity affect trading, financing and balance-sheet values. Positions may be harder or more expensive to hedge or exit during stressed markets.

Interest-rate and funding risk

Rate levels influence what Citi earns on loans and investments, what it pays for deposits and wholesale funding, and the attractiveness of new lending. Changes in deposit behavior or market funding can pressure liquidity and margins.

Operational, cyber and technology risk

System outages, cyber incidents, control failures or data problems can interrupt payments and trading, expose client information, create remediation costs and damage trust.

Regulatory and compliance risk

Citi must meet capital, liquidity, conduct, consumer-protection, sanctions, anti-money-laundering and reporting obligations. Breaches can result in penalties, restrictions, remediation expense or limits on growth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transformation and control execution

Citi is undertaking a multiyear effort to improve controls, data and operating systems. The work consumes management attention and resources. Failure to meet regulatory expectations can increase costs and limit strategic flexibility.

Legal, geopolitical and macroeconomic risk

Litigation, conflicts, trade disruption, inflation, weaker growth and country-specific conditions can affect clients, markets, credit quality and the value or timing of planned exits.

Business exits and divestitures

Selling or winding down a franchise can reduce future revenue while leaving temporary stranded costs or changing where items appear in the accounts. Any analysis of a specific transaction should identify the period and accounting treatment.

What to remember

  • Citi’s core model is a portfolio of financial services, not one product line.
  • The 2025 businesses were Services, Markets, Banking, Wealth and U.S. Personal Banking; the 2026 consumer-card presentation is U.S. Consumer Cards.
  • Fees, interest-related income, trading activity and financing all contribute, but their recurrence and volatility differ.
  • Revenue can rise while net income falls if expenses, funding costs or credit-loss provisions increase.
  • Global institutional services and markets connect the franchise, while consumer cards add direct household-credit exposure.
  • For the latest verified figures available here, use Q2 2026 and check Citi’s official disclosures for later updates.
