Chrome tab sync stores open-tab information in the Google Account used by Chrome, then makes it available to other devices signed in to that account. To use it, sign in to Chrome on each device and enable History and tabs in Sync settings.
The convenience comes with a privacy choice: open tabs and history can leave the device, along with any other Chrome data categories you select. Google encrypts information in transit and offers a passphrase for certain synced data, but that passphrase does not make every Chrome Sync category end-to-end encrypted.
What Chrome tab sync does
Chrome Sync is an account-based service rather than a direct connection between two devices. Each participating Chrome profile sends the enabled categories to the Google Account, and other signed-in profiles retrieve them. If you do not sign in to Chrome, browser data remains on that device instead of being made available through the account.

The account-based flow
- Sign in: Sign in to Chrome with the Google Account you want to use on each device.
- Choose data: In Chrome’s sync controls, turn on History and tabs, or choose a broader set of categories.
- Upload: Chrome sends the selected profile information to the account so it can be available across devices.
- Retrieve: A signed-in Chrome profile on another device requests the account’s synchronized information.
- Display: Chrome presents available pages through its recent-history or other-device tabs interface; it does not open every synchronized page automatically.
What must be true for tab sync to work
- The devices must use Chrome profiles signed in to the same Google Account.
- History and tabs must be enabled in the sync selection.
- The profile must be allowed to sync. A workplace or school administrator can restrict or configure this behavior.
- Sync must not be paused pending identity verification or another account action.
How to open a tab from another device
On a desktop computer
- Open Chrome and select the three-dot menu.
- Choose History.
- Open Tabs from other devices.
- Select the device and tab you want to reopen.
Google documents this desktop route, but the exact wording can change with the Chrome release or a managed profile. If the entry is absent, use the checks in the troubleshooting section rather than assuming the tab was deleted.
On Android
- Open Chrome.
- Tap More (the three-dot menu).
- Tap Recent tabs.
- Choose the device and page to reopen.
These instructions reflect Google’s documented Android layout. Other mobile platforms can use different labels or navigation.
If the tab list is empty
- Check the account avatar in Chrome and confirm it is the same account used on the source device.
- Open Chrome’s Sync settings and verify that History and tabs is enabled.
- Check whether sync is paused. Google says sync can pause after you sign out of a Google service and may require identity verification before it resumes. Follow Google’s troubleshooting guidance at Chrome Sync troubleshooting.
- Allow time for a recently opened or closed tab to appear, especially after changing accounts or reconnecting a profile.
- On a work or school device, ask the administrator whether policy prevents tab or history synchronization.
What information Chrome can share
Google’s Chrome Sync documentation identifies several broad categories that can be saved to a Google Account. The controls are selective: seeing a category in Google’s documentation does not mean it is enabled for every user or profile.

Chrome’s settings let you choose which categories to save. A profile configured to synchronize only history and tabs has a narrower account footprint than one that also synchronizes passwords, payment information, bookmarks, and settings.

Ordinary Chrome Sync versus ChromeOS Desk sync
Google’s managed ChromeOS Desk sync documentation gives a more detailed description of tab-related data for that specific feature. It lists URLs, tab order, pinning behavior, tab groups, assignment to windows, and window positions. It also describes persistent and session cookies under particular Desk sync configurations.
Those details should not be generalized to every ordinary Chrome Sync profile. Desk sync is a distinct managed ChromeOS feature, so its data model and retention statements are evidence about that feature only.

These 30-day and 7-day figures are not a general retention promise for all Chrome tab or history synchronization. The applicable policy, account type, and feature determine what is retained.

Privacy and encryption
Encryption in transit
Google says information sent to it is encrypted in transit. That protects the connection while data travels between Chrome and Google’s services. It does not by itself mean Google cannot process or access every synchronized category after arrival.

Optional passphrase protection
Chrome offers an optional custom passphrase for certain synchronized data. Google’s wording is: “You can choose to encrypt certain data with your own passphrase, so Google cannot read this data.” The qualification matters: the help describes protection for certain data, not universal end-to-end encryption for all Chrome Sync information.
Use a passphrase only if you can retain it securely. Losing it can prevent access to the passphrase-protected sync data, and a passphrase does not necessarily cover every category or every piece of service metadata.
Sync is separate from Google personalization
Saving Chrome history to the Google Account is one control. Use of that history for personalization is another. Google says Chrome history may be used to personalize products such as Search when it is also included in Web & App Activity. Opening the tab-sync screen does not, by itself, mean every Google product is personalizing results from your tabs.

How to choose what Chrome saves
Review the sync selection
- Open Chrome’s three-dot menu and choose Settings.
- Open the section for your Google Account, then choose Sync and Google services or the equivalent label shown by your version.
- Open the control for managing what you sync.
- Choose either to synchronize all available categories or to customize the selection.
- For tab sharing without the broadest profile copy, enable History and tabs and leave unnecessary categories disabled.
Labels can differ across desktop, Android, ChromeOS, and managed profiles. If an option is unavailable, an administrator or account policy may be enforcing the choice.
Turn off tab synchronization
Return to the same sync controls and switch off History and tabs, or disable Chrome Sync according to the option presented. This stops that category from being synchronized going forward. It does not automatically answer what has already been stored in the account.
Review or delete data already saved
Google provides chrome.google.com/sync for reviewing and deleting synchronization data held in the account. Deleting account-held sync data is a separate action from turning off a category on one device; check each participating profile afterward if you want consistent settings.

Important limits and edge cases
A tab appearing on another device is not proof that every browser detail was copied
Google’s general documentation names open tabs as a synchronized category, while the detailed URL order, windows, tab groups, and cookies description belongs to ChromeOS Desk sync. Treat the ordinary feature as an account-held list of synchronized tab information, not as evidence that every window state, cookie, or session detail is replicated on every device.

Closing a tab and deleting sync data are different actions
Closing a page changes the source browser’s open-tab state. Deleting data at chrome.google.com/sync removes account-held synchronization data. Depending on timing and the profile’s state, those actions may not appear simultaneously on every device.
Account and policy changes can interrupt access
Signing out, changing the active Google Account, or triggering an identity check can pause sync. A managed profile may also hide controls or enforce a different configuration. Verify the account and policy before changing local browser data or assuming that a page has been lost.
Bottom line
Chrome tab sync is useful when you routinely move between signed-in devices: enable History and tabs, then open the other-device tab list from History on desktop or Recent tabs on Android. The privacy cost is account storage of the selected Chrome categories, including open tabs and history. Customize the categories, review account-held data, and use a passphrase for the limited set of data it protects if that balance fits your needs.
