China Construction Bank (CCB) has kept its cash-dividend payout ratio close to 30% in each of the last four reported years. That consistency can make income planning easier, but it is not a fixed-dividend promise: the payout ratio is applied to profit, so a weaker profit base can still produce a smaller per-share payment. CCB’s 2025 annual report reports RMB0.3887 per share (RMB3.887 per ten shares), or approximately RMB101.684 billion in total, equal to 30.0% of net profit attributable to equity shareholders.
What CCB’s recent dividend record actually shows
The most useful starting point is the amount paid per share and the proportion of attributable profit distributed. CCB’s annual-report figures show a remarkably narrow payout range from 2022 through 2025.

The 2025 figure combines an interim dividend of RMB1.858 per ten shares with a proposed final dividend of RMB2.029 per ten shares. The final payment remains subject to the approval process described in the 2025 annual report, so investors should distinguish a proposed amount from cash that has already been paid.

What is CCB’s payout ratio?
A payout ratio measures the share of attributable profit distributed as dividends. In simplified form:
payout ratio = dividends paid to ordinary shareholders ÷ net profit attributable to equity shareholders
A 30% ratio means that, for the relevant reporting period, about RMB0.30 of every RMB1 of attributable profit was allocated to cash dividends and roughly RMB0.70 was retained. The retained portion is not idle cash for shareholders; it remains within the bank to support capital, lending capacity, investment and absorption of future losses. The connection between retention and resilience is an analytical implication of the payout mechanics, rather than a separately published CCB performance statistic.
The ratio is more informative when read over several years. CCB reported 30.0% in 2022, 30.1% in 2023, 30.0% in 2024 and 30.0% in 2025. That stability lets an investor build an initial earnings-linked estimate instead of assuming that the latest dividend per share will simply repeat.

How much dividend does CCB pay per share?
For 2025, the reported total is RMB0.3887 per share, expressed by CCB as RMB3.887 per ten shares. The comparable 2024 amount was RMB0.403 per share, followed by RMB0.400 in 2023 and RMB0.389 in 2022. The small year-to-year changes illustrate why a stable payout ratio does not produce a perfectly flat dividend: the per-share amount changes with the profit base and the number of shares entitled to the distribution.
Investors should also separate the declared amount from the amount that reaches their account. The entitlement date, payment date, share register, withholding tax, currency conversion and broker charges can all affect realized cash. Those details vary by share class and investor jurisdiction and should be checked against the current exchange announcement and broker records before relying on a payment for a specific budget.
Is China Construction Bank a good dividend stock for long-term investors?
There is no universal yes or no. CCB may suit an investor who values a large-bank dividend tied to a historically stable payout ratio and who accepts that bank earnings and regulatory capital requirements can change. It is less suitable for someone who needs a guaranteed or rapidly growing cash payment regardless of economic conditions.

- Is the income objective flexible? A 30% payout policy gives a useful reference point, but the dividend can fall if attributable profit falls.
- Can you tolerate bank-specific risk? Loan losses, credit costs, property exposure, interest-rate changes and economic slowdowns can affect earnings more quickly than they affect a diversified portfolio of industries.
- Does the share class fit your account? A-shares and H-shares have different trading venues, currencies, settlement arrangements, liquidity conditions and tax treatment.
- Are you evaluating total return rather than yield alone? A high indicated yield can reflect a falling share price or elevated perceived risk. Compare dividend growth, earnings quality, capital strength and valuation together.
The four-year record supports the narrower conclusion that CCB has maintained a near-30% payout ratio. It does not establish that the dividend will grow, that the share price will rise, or that the bank will outperform other income investments.

Are CCB dividends sustainable?
Sustainability depends on whether the bank can continue generating distributable profit while meeting capital and regulatory requirements. CCB’s policy says cash dividends are generally paid when the bank is profitable and has positive cumulative undistributed profits. It also says annual cash dividends should be at least 10% of consolidated net profit attributable to equity shareholders unless special circumstances apply. The 10% language is a policy condition, not a promise that every future distribution will equal or exceed 10%.
Profit direction
Because the payout ratio is a percentage of profit, earnings direction is the first check. If net profit rises while the ratio stays near 30%, the per-share dividend can rise. If net profit contracts and the ratio is unchanged, the dividend can contract as well. A steady ratio alongside shrinking earnings is therefore not evidence of a steady cash amount.
Capital and retained earnings
Retaining approximately 70% of profit can provide internal capital for balance-sheet growth and loss absorption. However, retained earnings do not remove the need to monitor capital adequacy, capital-generation needs and management’s proposed distribution. A bank facing unusually high capital demands may have less flexibility than its historical ratio suggests, particularly if regulators impose constraints or if management prioritizes balance-sheet resilience.
Asset quality and provisioning
Review non-performing-loan trends, credit costs and provisioning alongside the dividend line. Deteriorating asset quality can reduce current profit through higher provisions and can make a payout policy harder to maintain even before a cash shortfall appears. The practical test is whether earnings after credit costs remain strong enough to fund both the proposed dividend and required capital.

Policy, approval and payment timing
CCB’s policy and annual reports describe a framework, not an automatic distribution. Interim and final dividends may be separate payments, and the final dividend can require shareholder or other stated approvals. Confirm the proposal, approval outcome, ex-dividend date and payment date each year. Do not treat the 30% historical ratio as a forecast supplied by the bank.
How A-shares and H-shares change the investor’s result
CCB has A-shares, ticker 601939, listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and H-shares, ticker 939, listed in Hong Kong. The underlying company and declared dividend are related, but the investor experience is not identical.
- Currency: The declared dividend is stated in the company’s applicable currency, while an overseas holder may receive a converted amount. Exchange-rate movements can raise or reduce home-currency income.
- Tax: Withholding treatment can differ by residence, share class, account structure and applicable treaty. The headline dividend is not necessarily the after-tax dividend.
- Settlement and access: Trading hours, settlement cycles, eligible-investor programs and broker availability vary. Confirm that your account is authorized to hold and receive the selected line.
- Price and liquidity: A-share and H-share prices can diverge because they trade in different markets with different investor bases, currencies and liquidity. Compare yield using the actual purchase price and currency you can access.
Before purchasing, obtain current broker and tax guidance for your jurisdiction. These operational details change more often than the annual payout ratio and can materially alter realized income.

A practical process for analyzing CCB as a long-term income holding
- Start with the latest annual report. Record the dividend per share, total amount, payout ratio, attributable profit and whether the final dividend is proposed or approved.
- Build a multi-year series. Put at least the 2022–2025 figures in a spreadsheet. Calculate the change in dividend per share separately from the change in payout ratio; they answer different questions.
- Stress-test earnings. Model a lower-profit case and apply the historical ratio as an assumption, clearly labeling it as an assumption. This shows how much income would be at risk if earnings weaken.
- Check the balance sheet. Examine non-performing loans, provisioning, credit costs and capital ratios. A dividend that looks attractive without these checks can conceal rising risk.
- Read the policy wording. Note the profitability and cumulative-undistributed-profit conditions, the stated 10% minimum subject to special circumstances, and any approval requirements.
- Calculate your net cash. Deduct withholding tax and transaction costs and convert the result into your spending currency using a conservative exchange-rate assumption.
- Compare alternatives on the same basis. Use multi-year dividend per share, payout stability, earnings growth and quality, capital needs, asset quality, credit-cycle exposure and share-class access—not the quoted yield alone.
- Recheck dates before trading. Dividend proposals, approvals, record dates, payment dates, tax rules and broker programs can change after an annual report is published.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing payout ratio with yield
The payout ratio compares dividends with profit. Dividend yield compares the dividend with the share price. A 30% payout ratio does not imply a 30% yield. Yield changes whenever the market price changes, even if the declared dividend does not.

Assuming a policy floor is a guaranteed payment
CCB’s policy refers to a general minimum of 10% when the stated conditions are met and allows for special circumstances. It should not be read as an unconditional entitlement independent of profit, undistributed earnings, capital requirements or approvals.
Using the interim payment as the full-year dividend
The 2025 report identifies separate interim and proposed final components. A holder who tracks only the first payment will understate the annual total; a holder who treats the proposed final amount as certain may overstate cash that has not yet been approved.
Ignoring share-count and per-share mechanics
Total cash paid and cash per share are different measures. Corporate actions, the number of shares entitled to the distribution and the relevant record date affect the conversion between them. Use the per-share figure for personal income planning and the total figure for assessing the scale of the company’s distribution.

Looking at one strong year
One dividend can be distorted by a one-time profit movement, unusual provisioning or a temporary market condition. The 2022–2025 series is more informative because it shows both the payout-ratio consistency and the modest movement in per-share payments.
What long-term investors can reasonably conclude
CCB has demonstrated a near-30% cash-dividend payout ratio across the four reported years through 2025, with per-share dividends ranging from RMB0.389 to RMB0.403 except for the 2025 amount of RMB0.3887. That record supports using roughly 30% as a historical reference point when building scenarios, not as a guaranteed forward rate.
The central investment trade-off is straightforward: retaining about 70% of profit can support capital and growth, while the distributed 30% provides current income. The quality of that income depends on the durability of profit, asset quality, provisioning, capital requirements, policy conditions and the investor’s share class, tax position and currency.
For a long-term decision, treat CCB as an earnings-linked bank dividend rather than a fixed coupon. Revisit the annual report, capital and credit indicators, approval status and net-of-tax cash amount before each purchase or reinvestment decision.
