ChatGPT’s main personalization features do different jobs. Memory can use relevant details from earlier conversations and other available account sources to tailor replies. Custom instructions are rules you write about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. Tools add capabilities such as web search, data analysis, file handling, image generation, voice, and Canvas.
These features are controlled separately, and what you see can vary by plan, country or territory, device, and workspace administrator. The practical way to use them safely is to understand what each stores or accesses, check the controls in your own account, and verify important output.
What ChatGPT memory does
Memory is a personalization layer, not a verbatim archive of every conversation. When it is enabled, ChatGPT may retain or reference useful preferences and facts so later replies can be more relevant. Examples include your preferred programming language, writing style, dietary preference, or an ongoing project you have discussed.
OpenAI says it does not retain every detail. The information available to the feature, and the controls shown in Settings, can differ by plan, region, platform, and workspace. A memory summary can therefore be incomplete, and an item you expect to see may not appear as a saved memory.

Saved memories and referenced chat history
There are two related ways personalization can draw on your past interactions:
- Saved memories: details ChatGPT has stored for future use and that you can review or remove through the memory controls available to your account.
- Referenced chat history: relevant information inferred or retrieved from earlier chats without necessarily appearing as a separate saved-memory entry.
They are not interchangeable. A control for saved memories may not control chat-history references, and deleting a saved item does not automatically delete the conversation in which you originally mentioned it.
How to review, correct, or delete memory
On accounts that provide the current memory interface, open Settings → Personalization → Memory. Labels and available switches can change, so use the options shown in your account.

- Correct an item. Tell ChatGPT the accurate preference or edit the entry in Manage, if that control is offered.
- Delete a specific item. Remove the saved memory from Manage, or ask ChatGPT to forget it when conversational deletion is supported.
- Turn memory off. Disable the Memory, Reference saved memories, or Reference chat history option that your account exposes.
- Remove the original source when necessary. If the information also exists in a conversation, file, or another account source, delete that source separately if you want it removed from there too.
Turning Memory off does not erase old chats. Likewise, deleting a saved memory does not by itself remove the original conversation or every copy of the information. Treat deletion as a set of separate actions: remove the memory entry, delete the source chat or file when appropriate, and check any workspace retention policy.

Temporary chats: what changes
Temporary chats are designed for a conversation that should not create or update memories. Before starting one, you choose whether the chat uses existing memories and custom instructions. That choice cannot be changed after the temporary chat begins.
- A temporary chat does not create new saved memories or update existing ones.
- It may still follow the options you selected at the start, such as existing custom instructions.
- Saving the temporary conversation converts it to a regular chat governed by your account’s normal settings.
Temporary chat is therefore a session-level choice, not a universal privacy switch. Check the opening screen each time, especially on a managed device or workspace.
What custom instructions are
Custom instructions are explicit guidance that you author. OpenAI Help Center describes them as: “Custom instructions are direct guidance that you provide about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond.” You might specify that answers should use British spelling, include runnable code, assume a beginner audience, or ask clarifying questions before proposing a plan.

Unlike Memory, custom instructions do not depend on ChatGPT deciding that a fact from a conversation is useful to retain. You write, edit, or remove the guidance yourself. OpenAI says updates are applied immediately across all chats, including existing conversations.

Set up or change custom instructions
Current documentation uses different labels by platform:
- Web or desktop: open Personalization in Settings and select the custom-instructions controls.
- iOS or Android: open Customize ChatGPT, then edit the custom-instructions fields.
- Enable customization. Make sure the enable-customization switch is on; text saved while the feature is disabled may not affect replies.
- Save and test. Start a fresh prompt that exercises the instruction, such as requesting a response in your preferred format.
Interface names can change. If a label is missing, use the Personalization or Customize ChatGPT area shown by your current app version. Removing an instruction affects future behavior, but it does not rewrite text that ChatGPT already produced.
Memory and custom instructions compared

Both can influence an answer at the same time. If a saved preference conflicts with a written instruction, revise the instruction and remove or correct the conflicting memory rather than assuming one control will cancel the other.

Tools are capabilities beyond an ordinary text exchange. OpenAI’s capabilities documentation lists several categories, but access is account-specific.

A built-in capability is not the same as a connected external service. A built-in tool operates within ChatGPT’s supported environment. A connected service may receive information you authorize and can be governed by additional permissions, terms, or an administrator. Review the connection prompt before granting access and avoid sending credentials or confidential material unless your organization has approved the integration.
Using web search responsibly
Search results and citations are useful leads, not proof. Pages can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Open the cited page, check its publication or update date, assess the source’s authority, and verify consequential claims against primary documentation or another reliable source.

OpenAI’s current Help Center guidance says conversations with custom GPTs start fresh: they do not use your saved Memory, custom instructions, or previous conversations. A custom GPT can have its own configured instructions and knowledge files, but that is separate from your personal memory.
As a result, do not assume a custom GPT knows your preferred format simply because the main ChatGPT app does. Include important context in the new conversation or configure it in the GPT’s own instructions, subject to the permissions of the GPT and its workspace.

Privacy controls that are easy to confuse
Chat history
Chat history is the record of conversations shown in your account. Turning Memory off does not delete that record. Delete chats separately when you no longer want them retained in the account interface, and consider any organization-level retention rule in a managed workspace.
Personalization through Memory
Memory determines whether relevant information can shape later replies. Its switches and deletion controls are in Personalization, and they are distinct from chat-history deletion.
Model improvement
The Improve the model for everyone setting is a data-use control, not a Memory control. OpenAI says that when it is off, new conversations are not used to train its models, although those conversations may still appear in chat history. Disabling it does not automatically disable Memory or erase conversations.

Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces have different default treatment for workspace data than personal consumer accounts. Do not apply personal-account assumptions to an organization-managed workspace; the administrator may control retention, tools, and training settings.
OpenAI also documents a narrow exception in which limited safety-relevant context may be used in rare, high-risk situations even when Memory or personalization is off. That is not ordinary personalization and should not be interpreted as a general memory feature.
Why a feature may be missing or behave differently
- Plan differences: some capabilities are limited to particular subscriptions or rollout groups.
- Country or territory: deep research and other tools may not be available everywhere.
- Platform differences: web, desktop, iOS, and Android can expose different labels or release dates.
- Workspace administration: an employer, school, or healthcare organization can disable Memory, tools, uploads, or connected services.
- Account settings: a feature may be present but disabled, or require a permission such as microphone, file access, or a connector authorization.
When instructions from an older tutorial do not match your screen, check Settings → Personalization, the model or tool picker, and your workspace administrator’s documentation before assuming the feature was removed.
A practical setup for predictable replies
- Put stable style rules in custom instructions. Specify audience, tone, spelling, output format, and coding conventions.
- Let Memory handle useful personal context. Review what is stored and remove details that are outdated or too sensitive.
- Use a temporary chat for a one-off conversation. Decide at the start whether existing personalization should be used.
- Select tools deliberately. Use search for current information, data analysis for structured files, and voice or Canvas when the task benefits from those interfaces.
- Limit connected-service permissions. Authorize only the accounts and data needed for the task.
- Verify important results. Check citations, calculations, generated files, and any claim that could affect money, safety, health, legal rights, or production systems.
- Clean up separately. If information should disappear, review memory entries, delete source chats or files, and check workspace retention and model-improvement settings.
Bottom line
Think of ChatGPT as three layers: Memory supplies evolving personal context, custom instructions supply your explicit standing guidance, and tools supply extra ways to search, analyze, create, or interact. None of these layers guarantees that every account has the same controls or that every answer is accurate. Check the settings available to your account, keep sensitive data out of unnecessary connections, and verify high-stakes output before relying on it.
