Celebrity voice acting, motion capture and performance capture are related but distinct parts of game production. Dialogue may be recorded in a booth while movement is captured separately; performance capture records voice, face and body together. In either workflow, the recorded material is only a starting point: teams synchronize, edit and refine it before it becomes a finished scene. A famous cast member does not necessarily provide every part of a character’s performance.
What is the difference between voice acting, motion capture and performance capture?
Voice acting records spoken dialogue, often in a sound booth. Motion capture typically records body movement. Performance capture combines more of an actor’s performance—usually voice, facial expression and body movement—in a synchronized recording. Studios use these terms in different ways, so the clearest question is what signals a production captured together.
CD PROJEKT RED Motion Capture Lead Tomasz Kowalczyk describes the distinction this way: “For performance capture, we are recording voice at the same time as we are recording the animation.” The studio’s 2026 account also describes facial cameras and finger-sensing gloves alongside body capture. How are a game actor’s voice and movements recorded?
Separate voice and movement sessions
A performer can record dialogue without recording body movement. For a separate motion-capture session, an actor or stunt performer may wear a close-fitting suit with reflective markers. Cameras around the stage track the markers so software can reconstruct movement. Camera coverage matters around set pieces as well as open areas, because the system needs to see markers as performers move through the space.

Quantic Dream said its earlier Heavy Rain process recorded voice separately from movement. The studio noted that combining separate elements could make the result feel disjointed. The studio’s account of its production evolution
Simultaneous performance capture
For performance capture, actors perform with equipment that can record multiple parts of the scene at once. CD PROJEKT RED describes body markers, a head-mounted camera for facial performance and a glove that senses finger positions, with voice recorded simultaneously. Capturing those inputs together can help retain the timing and relationship between dialogue, expression and movement instead of asking a team to align them later.

The equipment and stage figures in studio accounts describe particular facilities, not industry norms. CD PROJEKT RED’s Motion Capture Lead described a stage with 74 cameras and a capture volume around 50 meters by 7 meters. Ubisoft’s 2019 account gave 8,000 square feet for its original Toronto stage and 12,000 square feet for its newer stage. Those numbers show the scale of the named facilities; they do not establish a typical studio setup.
What happens after the capture session?
Captured data is not a finished cinematic. Ubisoft describes synchronizing facial, audio, motion-capture and reference-video data for editing. After the cinematic director validates an edit, timecode helps order the corresponding data; automated post-production processes help manage the volume. As Ubisoft Toronto Performance Capture Director Tony Lomonaco put it: “Every aspect of what we capture is timecode-synced, which is crucial in performance capture for many reasons – most specifically because of our editing process.” Ubisoft’s account of its workflow

Teams also clean and refine the material. PlayStation’s production account for The Last of Us describes raw motion-capture cleanup and a cinematic process involving planning, writing, performance, scripting, animation and lighting, followed by extensive refinement. PlayStation’s production account The final scene is therefore the work of a pipeline, not simply an unedited recording of an actor.
What does a celebrity actor contribute to a game character?
It depends on the production and the scene. A recognizable actor may record dialogue, perform facial and body capture, or contribute only some of those elements. A stunt performer, double or specialist may supply physical work that calls for particular skills. The actor credited as a character’s voice is not automatically the person whose movements or facial data appear in every scene.

CD PROJEKT RED’s 2026 account says casting can begin with project or character codenames. After performers meet the team and sign an NDA, the studio provides context about the character and intended scene. It also describes selecting stunt performers and other specialists for specific physical abilities, and sometimes iterating with doubles before recording a final version with a high-profile performer. To establish an individual actor’s contribution, look for a reliable production source that identifies what they recorded or performed. A cast announcement by itself may not specify whether the actor supplied voice, face, body movement or some combination.

Why choose one capture workflow over another?
Separate recording and performance capture are production choices, not a simple ranking. The right approach depends on what a scene needs and how the team plans to edit it.
- Signals captured together: A separate voice session captures dialogue; a body-motion session captures movement; performance capture can combine body, face and voice.
- Scene interaction: Productions decide whether performers work together in the same space or record separately.
- Synchronization and editing: Separate streams must be aligned in post-production. Synchronized capture preserves their timing at recording, but still needs editing and refinement.
- Technical and physical demands: Marker suits and stage coverage support body capture; facial cameras and sensing gloves add equipment and constraints for more detailed capture.
- Division of roles: Actors, stunt performers, doubles and specialists may each contribute different parts of a character’s performance.
Studio terminology, equipment, actor contracts and role divisions vary by project. The available studio accounts explain specific workflows; they do not establish a single method used by all games or an industry-wide statistic for celebrity casting or capture methods.
